There is no single best Division 2 preset. The reliable approach is to choose a resolution and frame-rate target, run the built-in benchmark, change one option at a time, and keep each change only when its visual or control benefit is worth the cost on your system. Start at your display’s native resolution for clarity, then adjust resolution scale or heavier effects if performance misses your target.
Ubisoft documents uncapped frame rate, adjustable resolution, widescreen support, variable-refresh-rate displays, HDR and a PC benchmark, but those capabilities do not guarantee that every monitor, driver or current game build exposes identical menus. This guide separates PC graphics from console controls, treats Ubisoft’s 2019 hardware figures as historical guidance, and avoids claiming a universal DirectX 11/12 winner or a guaranteed FPS increase.
What should I change first in The Division 2?
Set a clear target before touching individual options: for example, native 1080p at a stable 60 frames per second, native 1440p at your monitor’s refresh rate, or the highest consistent frame rate your hardware can sustain. Record the current result, then make one change and repeat the same benchmark run. This prevents several simultaneous changes from hiding which option helped or hurt.
Recommended Free Tools
- Confirm the display mode. Use the monitor’s native resolution as your image-quality baseline. Choose fullscreen, borderless or windowed according to your workflow, and verify that the selected refresh rate matches the display.
- Run the benchmark. An archived Ubisoft staff walkthrough places it at Settings > Benchmark and says the result can be saved as a CSV and screenshot. Menu names can move between builds, so search the installed game’s Video or Graphics pages if that path differs.
- Change one variable. Use the same benchmark route and scene after every adjustment. Record average performance and whether frame pacing, clarity or visibility changed.
- Check real gameplay. A benchmark is repeatable, but a setting that looks good in the test can still affect firefights, crowded hubs or weather differently. Keep the change only if it remains useful in the activities you play.
Ubisoft’s documented PC controls include uncapped frame rate, display resolution, HUD adjustment, widescreen support, variable refresh rate and HDR (Ubisoft PC features and specifications). These are supported capabilities, not a promise that a particular GPU, cable or operating-system configuration will deliver a specific result.

Which Division 2 graphics settings are the best starting points?
Use native resolution first, then investigate the options Ubisoft identifies as potentially consequential: resolution scale, volumetric fog, ambient occlusion, object detail, particle detail, high-resolution sky textures, anisotropic filtering, the frame limiter and reduced latency. Ubisoft does not publish a universal ranking or FPS percentage for them, so compare them on your own hardware rather than copying a fixed Low/Medium/High recipe.
Resolution and resolution scale
Resolution determines the number of pixels rendered; resolution scale changes the internal render resolution before the image is displayed. Native resolution normally gives the sharpest interface and distant-object detail. If the benchmark misses your target, reduce resolution scale in a small step and check weapon sights, text and foliage for distracting softness. If performance is already adequate, leave the scale at its native-equivalent value.
Volumetric fog
Fog affects atmospheric shafts, smoke-like volume and distant haze. Lowering it can make scenes less cinematic, while keeping it higher may be worthwhile if the effect is important to you. Test it separately because the cost depends on the scene and GPU.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Ambient occlusion
Ambient occlusion adds contact shading where objects meet, helping corners, cover and props read more clearly. Reduce it only after checking whether the extra depth is worth the measured frame-time cost in your benchmark.
Object and particle detail
Object detail controls the complexity or distance at which world geometry is shown; particle detail affects effects such as explosions, dust and debris. Lower values can reduce visual density and may alter how quickly distant objects appear. Compare the same camera route and inspect cover edges, street clutter and combat effects before deciding.
High-resolution sky textures
Sky textures improve cloud and skybox detail but may consume additional video memory. If you see texture streaming, hitching or memory pressure, test this option independently instead of assuming every texture setting has the same impact.
Anisotropic filtering
Anisotropic filtering keeps surfaces such as roads and floors clearer when viewed at an angle. It often improves readability of ground detail, but the practical cost varies with hardware and game build. Use the benchmark and a normal traversal route to decide whether the clarity is worth retaining.

Frame limiter and reduced latency
A custom frame cap can make pacing more consistent, especially when an uncapped rate swings widely. Set a cap that your system can hold rather than chasing a number it reaches only in empty scenes. Ubisoft also lists a reduced-latency option; compare responsiveness and frame pacing with it enabled and disabled. It is not a guarantee against all stutter, queueing or driver problems.
Should I use DirectX 11 or DirectX 12 in Division 2?
Test both modes that your installation offers and keep the one that is stable on your machine. Ubisoft’s 2019 specifications list DirectX 11 or 12 for lower PC tiers and DirectX 12 for its published 1440p and 4K tiers, but those tiers are historical guidance, not evidence that DirectX 12 is faster on every current system.
DirectX 12 can behave differently from DirectX 11 because shader compilation, drivers, overlays and CPU scheduling vary by hardware and software. A mode that produces a higher benchmark result can still be a poor choice if it introduces crashes, shader stutter or inconsistent frame pacing. Compare a repeatable benchmark run plus a longer session in the areas where you normally play. Keep current graphics drivers, disable unnecessary overlays while diagnosing, and revert to the stable API if a change creates new problems.
Do not infer API performance from another game. The Division 2’s result depends on its current build, driver version, background software and settings. No independently verified current-build FPS uplift establishes a universal winner.
What hardware targets did Ubisoft publish?
The table below reproduces Ubisoft’s historical 2019 targets as publisher-attributed figures. They are useful as a rough baseline, not current benchmarks, buying recommendations or a guarantee for a modern patch.
| Published target | GPU examples listed by Ubisoft | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 FPS | Radeon R9 280X or GeForce GTX 780 | Entry historical tier for the stated resolution and frame rate. |
| 1080p at 60 FPS | Radeon RX 480 or GeForce GTX 970 | Historical 60-FPS 1080p guidance. |
| 1440p at 60 FPS | Radeon RX Vega 56 or GeForce GTX 1070 | Historical 1440p tier; current drivers and patches can differ. |
| 4K at 60 FPS | Radeon VII or GeForce RTX 2080 Ti | Historical high-end tier, not a 2026 purchasing recommendation. |
These figures come from Ubisoft’s 2019 specifications page. CPU, memory, storage speed, thermals and background tasks also affect frame pacing, so a GPU name alone cannot predict your result.
How do I configure HDR and variable refresh rate?
HDR requires an HDR-capable screen and an operating-system/display path that is actually running in HDR. In the game’s Settings > Video page, Ubisoft documents separate controls for HDR Peak Brightness and HDR Peak Brightness for UI Elements. Adjust them to match your display and viewing preference; there is no defensible universal number.

- Enable HDR in the monitor or television menu and in the operating system, if required.
- Launch the game and confirm that its HDR option is available.
- Adjust the two peak-brightness controls while checking dark interiors, bright sky and white interface elements.
- If the picture looks washed out, clipped or excessively dim, verify the display’s HDR mode, cable bandwidth and operating-system HDR setting before changing every in-game slider.
Ubisoft also documents PC variable-refresh-rate support. Enable VRR on the display and in the GPU control panel, then use a frame limit that your system can hold consistently. VRR cannot compensate for a display that lacks the feature, an incompatible connection or severe frame-time spikes.
On Windows 11, Microsoft offers Optimizations for windowed games under System > Display > Graphics for eligible DirectX 10/11 games in windowed or borderless mode. Treat this as an optional operating-system experiment, not a proven Division 2 fix and not a reason to select DirectX 12.
What controller settings and devices are officially supported?
Choose a controller based on platform support, comfort and reliable connection rather than an unverified claim that one model gives better aim assist. Ubisoft’s PC support list includes the Xbox Wireless Controller, Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2, DualSense, DualShock 4 and keyboard/mouse (Ubisoft supported peripherals).
Ubisoft states that other controllers may work but are not officially supported and may require third-party software. That can introduce duplicate inputs, incorrect button prompts, missing vibration or a different layout. If a device is not on the list, treat compatibility as a possibility rather than a guarantee, and check the platform’s own remapping layer before editing game files.
Controller setup checklist
- Connect the controller before launching the game and update its firmware through the platform or manufacturer utility when applicable.
- In the game’s Controls menu, verify the active input method, button prompts, stick layout and vibration preference.
- Move each stick through its full range and check for drift before changing dead-zone or sensitivity values.
- Adjust look and aim sensitivity gradually. There is no research-backed universal number; choose a value that lets you track targets without over-correcting.
- Play a short, low-risk activity after each change so you can separate comfort improvements from unfamiliarity.
How do I turn on aim assist, vibration, subtitles and accessibility options?
These options solve different problems. Aim assist changes target acquisition, vibration changes physical feedback, subtitles improve spoken-information access, and color or contrast options improve legibility. Try each according to your needs instead of treating one combination as a competitive prescription.
An archived Ubisoft staff accessibility post places Aim Assist and Gamepad Vibration under Controls, subtitles and customization under Language, and colorblind choices plus High Contrast UI under Accessibility. It names deuteranopia, tritanopia and protanopia options and states, “Aim assist is available in the game.” Because that post is archived, confirm the exact labels in your installed build (archived Ubisoft staff guidance).
- Aim assist: Enable it if you want help slowing or guiding reticle movement near targets. Compare it in a controlled activity; do not assume it behaves identically for every weapon or input method.
- Vibration: Keep it on for recoil, damage and environmental cues, or disable it if repeated feedback causes fatigue or interferes with fine aim.
- Subtitles: Enable them when dialogue, radio calls or ambient information is easy to miss. Check size, speaker labels and background opacity if the build exposes those controls.
- Colorblind modes: Select the mode that improves your distinction between markers, loot and combat indicators. A color filter is not a substitute for high contrast if the issue is brightness or clutter.
- High Contrast UI: Use it when map icons, reticles or status elements blend into the environment, then reduce unrelated HUD elements if the screen becomes crowded.
Why is my controller input scrambled on Steam?
First determine whether the problem occurs in the game’s menus, only during gameplay, or only when another controller or remapping program is connected. Close duplicate remappers, disconnect extra devices, restart the game with the intended controller connected and verify the selected layout.

For Steam players whose inputs remain scrambled after initial troubleshooting, Ubisoft developer Ubi-WheelyDuck suggested trying Steam Big Picture and Steam Input in a February 26, 2025 support reply (Steam support discussion). Use that as a troubleshooting path, not as proof that every controller requires Steam Input. Avoid copying a community configuration-file edit as if it were official support.
Which settings should console players change?
Console versions do not expose every PC graphics control. Do not copy a PC step list for DirectX modes, resolution scale, GPU features or benchmark controls onto PlayStation or Xbox without a console-specific menu confirming them. Concentrate on the options the console build actually shows: display output, HDR calibration, field-of-view or camera choices if available, controller layout, aim assistance, vibration, subtitles and accessibility.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How can I troubleshoot blur, stutter, crashes and inconsistent frame rate?
The image is blurry
Confirm native output resolution, then inspect resolution scale, dynamic-resolution behavior if present, sharpening and texture settings. Check that the operating system and GPU panel are not applying a lower output resolution. If only the HUD is sharp while the world is soft, resolution scale is the first setting to revisit.
Frame rate is high but motion feels uneven
Use the benchmark CSV to compare frame pacing, not just an average. Try a conservative frame cap, test reduced latency, and compare fullscreen with borderless. Disable overlays one at a time while diagnosing. VRR can smooth ordinary variation when the display, connection and frame-rate range are compatible, but it cannot hide large stalls.
Stutter appears after changing graphics or API
Allow shader work to complete where the game provides that process, then repeat the same route. If stutter or crashes began after switching DirectX mode, return to the previously stable API and retest. Keep a note of the driver version, API, resolution and changed option so you can reverse the exact step.

Menus show the wrong buttons
Disconnect unused controllers, close remapping utilities, restart with one supported device connected and select the intended input layout. On Steam, test Big Picture and Steam Input if the issue persists, following Ubisoft’s support suggestion rather than an unverified file edit.
What is a sensible final setup process?
After troubleshooting, save a known-good profile or record the settings in a note. Re-run the benchmark after driver, operating-system or game updates because an old result does not prove that the same menu or performance remains unchanged. Recheck HDR and controller detection whenever you change displays or USB/Bluetooth connections.
A practical final order is:
- Native resolution and correct refresh rate.
- Stable DirectX mode, chosen by repeatable benchmark and gameplay behavior.
- Resolution scale only if the target frame rate is missed.
- Volumetric fog, ambient occlusion, object detail, particle detail and sky textures, one at a time.
- Anisotropic filtering and texture choices after checking clarity and video memory.
- Frame limiter, VRR and reduced latency for pacing and responsiveness.
- HDR peak brightness controls, if the entire display chain supports HDR.
- Controller layout, sensitivity, aim assist, vibration and accessibility options based on comfort and legibility.
This method produces a setting that is defensible for your hardware without pretending that an archived specification, a different GPU or another player’s sensitivity is a guaranteed answer.

Can I use the Division 2 benchmark to compare two graphics cards?
Only if the test conditions are controlled: use the same game build, resolution, API, graphics options, driver state and benchmark route. The built-in result is useful for your own repeatable comparisons, but it is not a substitute for an independently published cross-GPU benchmark.
Does lowering resolution scale reduce input lag?
It can reduce rendering work and may improve frame time, but the resulting latency depends on frame rate, queueing, display processing and the rest of the system. Measure pacing and responsiveness together instead of assuming a specific scale produces a fixed latency reduction.
How do I know whether my monitor is really using HDR?
Confirm HDR is enabled in the monitor and operating system, then check that the game’s HDR controls are available. Brightness clipping, a washed-out desktop or an unexpectedly dim image usually points to a display-chain or calibration issue rather than a missing in-game preset.
Can an unsupported controller damage my Division 2 installation?
Unsupported hardware normally causes compatibility or mapping problems rather than permanent game damage, but third-party remappers can create duplicate inputs and conflicts. Remove the remapper, reconnect one supported device and restore the platform’s default input configuration before trying additional software.
