If a game wiki contains a clear factual mistake, correct the smallest passage you can support—provided that wiki allows you to edit. If the claim is disputed, version-dependent, or you cannot edit the page, report it on the article’s Talk or Discussion page instead. In either route, check the wiki’s own rules, identify the game version, cite acceptable evidence, and leave enough context for another editor to verify the change.
The practical choice is therefore not simply “edit or do nothing.” It is a decision based on evidence, controversy, and permissions. The workflow below shows how to check the claim, choose the right route, make a traceable correction, and respond safely if another editor reverses it.
How do I decide whether a game-wiki claim is actually wrong?
First identify the exact claim and verify it against the relevant game version and the target wiki’s sourcing rules. A statement that looks false may describe an older release, a demo, a platform-specific behavior, or an interpretation the wiki has not yet settled.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPin down the offending material
Copy or note the precise sentence, table cell, number, image caption, link, or heading. Vague reports such as “this page is inaccurate” force other editors to repeat your investigation. Record the page title and, if practical, the section or heading where the error appears.

Separate versions, editions, and platforms
Check whether the page is discussing the current release, an earlier patch, an early-access build, or a demo. Aground Wiki, for example, asks contributors to identify older-version or demo information; that is a useful model, but it is not a universal rule. State the version, edition, platform, or date that your evidence covers rather than presenting a version-specific observation as timeless.
Use evidence the wiki accepts
Read the target wiki’s editing and sourcing policy before changing a claim. Minecraft Wiki rules describe verifiability through in-game testing, reliable outside sources, or other means, and caution against speculation; those rules apply to that wiki, not automatically to every game wiki. The rules page was identified as last changed in 2024, and its full text may not be accessible in every browser, so recheck the live page before relying on a local requirement: Minecraft Wiki rules.
Some communities impose stricter citation requirements. Warhammer 40k Wiki is an example of a wiki with a more formal citation policy. Treat such examples as illustrations: the policy on the page you are correcting controls your contribution.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Distinguish a fact from an interpretation
A changed damage value, item name, or unlock condition can often be checked directly. A statement such as “this is the best weapon” may require a defined scope or may be editorial opinion. If the evidence supports several readings, report the question for discussion instead of silently replacing one interpretation with another.
Should I edit the page or report the error?
Use a direct edit for a straightforward, well-supported mistake. Use the article’s Talk or Discussion page for uncertainty, disagreement, a proposed rewrite that needs community input, or any case in which you do not have editing permission.

MediaWiki’s official Help:Editing pages explains that every article has a Talk page for questions, suggestions, and corrections. The same page documents both visual and source editing, while the exact labels and permissions can vary by wiki.
How do I check a game-wiki error before changing anything?
Do a short evidence check before opening the editor. This prevents a correct page from being changed to match an outdated memory or an unsupported theory.
- Capture the current claim. Note the wording and the page section. If the claim is in a table or infobox, record the row label as well as the value.
- Identify the applicable version. Look for version notes, patch markers, release history, or a page-specific qualifier. If none is present, state the version your evidence covers and consider proposing a qualifier rather than a universal replacement.
- Compare with acceptable evidence. Use the game’s documented behavior or another source allowed by the wiki. Do not turn an unconfirmed observation into a definitive statement.
- Check for related pages. A change to an item name, mechanic, or patch value may affect links or tables elsewhere. This is a consistency check, not a reason to rewrite unrelated sections.
- Read local rules. Confirm whether the wiki requires citations, a particular template, discussion before major changes, or a community-portal request for uncertain issues.
Keep the scope narrow. The goal is to establish that one claim is wrong or incomplete, not to redesign the article while you are there.
How do I make a safe direct correction?
When the evidence is clear and the page is editable, change only the relevant passage, review the result, and explain the change in the edit summary.
- Open the editor. Select Edit or Edit source, depending on the controls shown by the wiki. Visual editing is suited to ordinary prose; source editing exposes wikitext, templates, tables, and references.
- Locate the exact text. Use the browser’s find function or the editor’s search to reach the sentence, cell, caption, or link you recorded. Avoid replacing surrounding material that is not part of the error.
- Write the smallest supported correction. Preserve useful qualifiers such as “in version 1.4” or “on the console edition.” If the evidence only shows that the old wording is incomplete, add the missing qualification instead of asserting a broader fact.
- Preview or review changes. MediaWiki documents a preview/change-review step. Check links, references, table layout, templates, punctuation, and whether the edit accidentally removed later work.
- Add an explanatory edit summary. Name what changed and why, for example: “Corrected item cooldown for version 2.3; official patch notes cited.” Keep the summary factual and avoid accusing the previous editor.
- Publish the edit. Save only after the preview is clean and the summary identifies the evidence or version context. If the wiki offers a minor-edit option, use it only when the local rules define the change as minor; a factual correction that changes meaning is not merely cosmetic.
After saving, open the page as a reader and confirm that the corrected wording appears as intended. If the page contains a citation, follow it to ensure the reference still supports the sentence.

How do I report a mistake if I cannot edit the page?
Use the article’s Talk or Discussion tab. A report should let an authorized editor reproduce the issue without guessing what you meant.
- Open the discussion page. The tab may be labelled Talk, Discussion, or a local equivalent. MediaWiki’s editing guide describes starting a new topic and replying to existing ones.
- Use a specific subject. “Incorrect cooldown value in the v2.3 section” is more useful than “Error.”
- Describe the existing claim. Quote the relevant wording or identify the table row, then state the replacement you propose.
- State the version context. Include release, patch, demo, platform, or date where it matters.
- Explain the evidence. Link or cite the source accepted by that wiki, and say whether it confirms the replacement or merely raises a question.
- Sign the comment. In wikitext discussions, four tildes (
~~~~) are the conventional signature; discussion tools may add a signature automatically.
Keep one issue per topic when possible. If you discover a second unrelated error, start another topic or identify it separately so editors can resolve each point without losing the thread.
Why can’t I edit this wiki page?
A protected page may replace the Edit control with View source. Protection can be temporary or permanent and is controlled by that wiki’s administrators, so do not assume that the same access rules apply elsewhere.
When a page is protected, post the correction through the available discussion or community channel and ask an editor with the necessary permission to apply it. Include the exact passage, proposed wording, version, and source. Do not bypass protection by creating a duplicate page or repeatedly attempting blocked edits; those actions make review harder and may violate local policy.
What should I do when an earlier edit is harmful?
Inspect the page’s History and the relevant diff before reverting. MediaWiki defines reverting as restoring a page to an earlier version from its history: Help:Reverting.
When Undo fits
Undo attempts to remove one selected edit while preserving later work. It is useful when a vandalism edit or a clearly erroneous change is isolated. The operation can fail when edits conflict, so review the resulting diff and resolve any legitimate content that would otherwise be lost.
When to discuss instead
If the earlier edit was made in good faith and the disagreement is about evidence or interpretation, open a discussion rather than repeatedly reverting. Explain which part is unsupported, cite the applicable rule or source, and propose a limited fix.
Rollback is not the same as Undo
Rollback is a separate, more limited tool generally available only to authorized users. If you do not have that permission, use the normal discussion route or ask an authorized editor. Whatever tool is used, check the page afterward and leave an explanation for a good-faith dispute.
How do I avoid an edit war?
An edit war starts when disagreement is handled through repeated reversions instead of evidence and discussion. Make one focused change, explain it, and invite review when the issue is unsettled.
What makes a correction easy for another editor to approve?
A useful correction is narrow, reproducible, and transparent. Before posting or saving, check that your contribution answers all of the following:
This checklist is editorial guidance rather than a universal form. A wiki may request additional templates, citations, or community review, so its own instructions take precedence.
Where can I learn the relevant MediaWiki controls?
MediaWiki’s official editing guide covers opening the visual or source editor, previewing changes, using edit summaries, starting a new discussion topic, and replying on a Talk page: Help:Editing pages. Its reverting guide explains page history, diffs, Undo, and rollback: Help:Reverting. These are software-level instructions; each game wiki can add its own permissions, templates, and sourcing standards.
For game-specific rules, consult the target wiki directly. Minecraft Wiki’s rules page is one example of a community policy emphasizing verifiability and caution around speculation, but it should not be treated as a general rulebook for unrelated projects: Minecraft Wiki: Wiki rules.
What is the safest overall workflow?
Check the claim and version first. If the mistake is obvious, sourced, and editable, make the smallest change, preview it, summarize it, and publish. If evidence is uncertain, the page is protected, or another editor may reasonably disagree, put the complete case on Talk or Discussion. For a damaging prior edit, inspect History and the diff, use Undo only when it will not remove later constructive work, and discuss good-faith disputes instead of trading reversions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I include a screenshot when reporting a game-wiki error?
Include one only if the target wiki accepts it as evidence and it adds information that a written version number or source cannot provide. A screenshot should identify the game version or context; otherwise it may document a different build without proving that the article is wrong.
How long should I wait for a Talk-page response?
There is no universal response time for game wikis. Follow any local notice about discussion or dispute resolution, and avoid reopening the same issue in multiple places while a thread is active.
What if the source I found conflicts with the wiki’s sourcing policy?
Say that the source conflicts with the policy rather than presenting it as conclusive. Ask whether an accepted source, an in-game confirmation, or a version-specific qualification is available before proposing a definitive rewrite.
Recommended Free Tools
Can I correct several related values in one edit?
Group changes only when they share the same source, version, and explanation. If each value has a different basis or could be disputed separately, split them into focused edits or discussion topics so reviewers can verify each one.
