To change an audio device’s format in Windows 11, open Start > Settings > System > Sound, select the output device, open Advanced, choose another option under Default format, and test playback. You can also use Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Sound > Playback > device Properties > Advanced.
There is no single format that Microsoft identifies as best for every speaker, headphone, monitor, or USB interface. Windows displays the formats supported by that device and its driver, so choose an available option, test it, and change it again if the sound is distorted, quiet, crackly, or otherwise incorrect.
What does “Default format” control in Windows 11?
Default format is the Windows setting that determines how the selected output device receives ordinary system audio. The choices combine audio characteristics such as sample rate and bit depth, and the exact list depends on the device and its installed driver.
The setting belongs to one device at a time. A laptop’s built-in speakers, a wired headset, a monitor connected over HDMI, and a USB audio interface can each expose a different list. Changing the format for one device does not rewrite the capabilities of the others.

Microsoft does not prescribe one universal sample-rate and bit-depth combination. A format that works cleanly for one driver may produce distortion or silence on another, which is why the supported choices must be tested on the device you are actually using.
How do I change the default audio format in Windows 11 Settings?
The modern Settings route is the quickest way to change the format for speakers, headphones, a monitor, a USB interface, or another output device.
- Open Start and select Settings. You can also press Windows key + I.
- Select System, then select Sound.
- Under Output, select the device whose format you want to change. Check the device name carefully if several outputs are listed.
- Open Advanced for that device.
- Under Default format, open the selection box and choose a different available format.
- Play audio and listen for a clear, stable result. If it is still distorted, too quiet, or otherwise wrong, return to the same list, select another available option, and test again.
The device must be selected before you open its advanced properties. If you change a format while another output is active, you may be testing the wrong hardware and conclude incorrectly that the change had no effect.

How can I confirm that Settings changed the correct device?
Return to Settings > System > Sound and look under Output. The device you selected should be the one producing the test audio. If Windows is sending sound to a different speaker, headset, or monitor, select the intended output first and test again.
Where is Default format in the Control Panel?
The classic Sound dialog exposes the same control when the Settings page does not show it or when you prefer the older interface.
- Search for Control Panel and open it.
- Select Hardware and Sound, then select Sound.
- On the Playback tab, right-click the target output device and select Properties.
- Open the Advanced tab.
- Under Default Format, select a different available format.
- Select OK, then play audio to test the device.
This dialog lists playback devices rather than the broader Sound page used by Settings. Right-click the exact speakers, headphones, monitor, or interface you intend to use; changing the format on another entry will not alter the active device.

Which audio format should I choose?
Choose from the formats Windows lists for the selected device, then keep the option that gives reliable, clean playback. Because the choices come from the device and driver, a format missing from the list cannot be selected through this control.

Use a test-first decision process
- Note the format that is currently selected so you can return to it.
- Choose one other available entry.
- Play speech, music, and any content that previously exposed the problem.
- Listen for crackling, dropouts, distortion, unusually low volume, or silence.
- If the result is worse, choose another listed entry or restore the original.
Do not assume that the highest displayed value is automatically the correct choice. Microsoft’s guidance is to try another available format and test the audio rather than applying one setting to every device.
Why do headphones and monitors show different choices?
Each output has its own hardware and driver path. A monitor receiving audio through a digital display connection may expose a different set of formats from laptop speakers or a USB interface, so compare only the choices shown for the device you are configuring.
How do I test whether the new format fixed the problem?
Testing should use the same output and the same type of audio that revealed the fault. A short system sound can confirm that the device is active, but longer playback is useful for finding intermittent crackles or dropouts.
- Confirm the intended device is selected under Output.
- Play a familiar recording or video at a normal listening level.
- Check both speech and music if the issue occurs only with one type of content.
- Test for several minutes if the original symptom was intermittent.
- Record which format produced the cleanest result before trying another option.
If the sound remains wrong after several supported formats, the format itself may not be the only cause. Continue with the troubleshooting steps below instead of repeatedly cycling through the list.
What should I do if changing the format does not help?
Microsoft identifies audio enhancements, driver faults, incorrect output selection, and Windows audio services as related causes. Work through these checks in order, testing playback after each change.

1. Turn off audio enhancements
Open the selected output device’s sound properties and turn off Audio enhancements, then test again. Enhancements can alter the signal after the format is selected, so disabling them helps determine whether processing rather than the format is causing distortion or other unwanted sound.
2. Verify the default output device
Go back to Settings > System > Sound and make sure the intended device is selected under Output. If you have a monitor, dock, headset, and internal speakers connected at the same time, Windows may be playing through a different entry than the one whose format you changed.
3. Update or reinstall the audio driver
When the available formats look wrong or playback problems continue, update or reinstall the audio driver through Device Manager or obtain the appropriate driver from the device manufacturer. Driver problems can affect both the formats Windows exposes and the way the selected format is handled.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesAfter a driver change, return to the device’s Advanced properties and check the Default format list again. A driver update can change the available entries, so retest rather than assuming the previous selection still applies.
4. Restart the Windows audio services
Restart Windows Audio and Windows Audio Endpoint Builder when the device is listed but playback is distorted, silent, or behaving inconsistently. Microsoft’s broader troubleshooting procedure also identifies Remote Procedure Call (RPC) among the services that may need to be restarted. After restarting the relevant services, select the output device again and test it.
5. Recheck the format after every system change
Enhancement settings, drivers, and services can change the way a device behaves. Once one of these items has been changed, open the device’s advanced properties, note the current Default format, and test playback again before making another change.

What if the Default format control is missing?
First, verify that you selected a playback device rather than a general sound page or an inactive entry. In Settings, select an item under Output; in Control Panel, use the Playback tab and open that device’s Properties.
If the control is still unavailable, use the other Windows route. The Settings page may not expose the control for a particular driver, while the classic Control Panel dialog may show it. Conversely, a driver can expose only the controls and formats it supports, so neither interface can create an unsupported format.
A missing or unexpectedly short list is also a reason to check the driver. Update or reinstall it through Device Manager or the device manufacturer, then reopen the advanced properties.
Can changing the format cause crackling or silence?
It can reveal an incompatibility between a selected format and the device, driver, or current processing settings. Crackling, distortion, low volume, or silence after a change does not mean the hardware is permanently damaged; it means the selected option should be tested against another supported option and the related causes checked.
Recovery sequence
- Return to the device’s Default format list.
- Select the format that worked previously, if you recorded it.
- Test with audio enhancements turned off.
- Confirm that the same device is the active output.
- Update or reinstall the driver if the problem remains.
- Restart Windows Audio, Windows Audio Endpoint Builder, and, where required by the troubleshooting procedure, Remote Procedure Call (RPC).
- Test again before selecting another format.
Changing one variable at a time makes the result easier to interpret. If you change the format, enhancements, driver, and output device simultaneously, you will not know which action fixed or caused the symptom.
What is the difference between the Settings and Control Panel methods?
Both routes change the selected playback device’s Default format. Choose Settings for the current Windows 11 layout, or Control Panel when the modern page does not expose the control or you prefer the traditional device-properties dialog.

What should I check before changing an audio format?
A short preparation check prevents changes to the wrong output and gives you a reliable comparison.
- Identify the physical output you want to hear: internal speakers, headphones, a monitor, or a USB interface.
- Confirm that it appears under Output in Settings or on the Control Panel Playback tab.
- Note the current format before changing it.
- Close or pause audio that could make it difficult to hear the test result.
- Have a known-good recording or video ready for comparison.
No additional physical product is required to change this Windows setting. The available controls come from the installed device and its driver.

Stop once one supported option provides stable, clear playback for the content you normally use. Repeatedly changing formats is unlikely to solve a problem caused by a driver, enhancement, service, or wrong output selection, so move to those checks when every listed option behaves badly.
If only one format works reliably, keep it and document the device name and driver state. That record makes it easier to restore the working configuration after a driver update or when reconnecting the device.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my monitor have different audio formats than my headphones?
Windows obtains the list from each device and its driver, so a monitor, headset, and built-in speaker system can expose different entries. Configure and test each output independently rather than assuming a format available on one will appear on another.
Can I select a format that is not shown in the list?
No. The Default format menu is populated by the selected device and driver. If a needed option is absent, check the driver or use a different supported entry instead of trying to add a value manually.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Will changing one device’s format change all of my Windows audio?
No. The change applies to the playback device whose properties you opened. Audio routed to another output continues to use that device’s own format settings.
What information should I record if the problem continues?
Write down the output device name, the formats you tested, which symptoms appeared, whether enhancements were disabled, and whether the driver was updated or reinstalled. This gives support a reproducible description instead of only saying that Windows sound is distorted.
