To set up taxes in Bluehost AI Store, open your store’s Payments tab and review Tax. That area provides basic tax configuration and syncs with WooCommerce. For detailed settings—such as tax rates, tax classes, and how customer location affects calculations—enable taxes in WordPress, then configure them under WooCommerce > Settings > Tax.

These settings control how your store calculates tax; they do not determine whether your business must collect tax or what rate it should charge. Those obligations depend on your business and the places where you sell.

Where are the tax settings in Bluehost AI Store?

Start in the Bluehost Portal. The route to the basic tax controls is Websites > your Sell Online site > Manage Store > Payments > Tax. Bluehost’s AI Store setup checklist includes the Payments area, where the Tax section lets you review how taxes apply to orders.

Bluehost’s Help Center article “Bluehost AI Store: Payments Tab,” updated September 2, 2026, describes this as a basic configuration that syncs with WooCommerce. Bluehost directs merchants to WooCommerce for advanced tax setup. The labels or layout may change, so check the live dashboard if a menu name differs from these instructions.

  1. Sign in to the Bluehost Portal.
  2. Open Websites and find the site associated with your Sell Online plan.
  3. Select Manage Store.
  4. In the AI Store dashboard, open Payments, then review the Tax section.
  5. For detailed rates or calculation choices, continue in the site’s WordPress dashboard and WooCommerce settings.

The Bluehost screen is a convenient place to review basic store behavior, but it is not a substitute for configuring and checking the underlying WooCommerce tax settings. If you change a setting in Bluehost, allow the WooCommerce connection to synchronize before judging the checkout result. Then inspect the corresponding WooCommerce settings so both interfaces describe the same intended behavior.

What should I check before changing tax settings?

Have the store’s basic facts ready before entering a rate. You need the business address used by the store, the locations you sell or ship to, the products that may have different tax treatment, and whether tax should apply to shipping under the rules that apply to your business. WooCommerce uses these facts as calculation inputs, but it does not decide which facts are legally correct for you.

Also identify who can access the WordPress administrator account. The Bluehost Payments screen is useful for a quick review, while detailed rate tables and tax classes require WooCommerce settings. If a contractor or accountant maintains rates, make sure that person can reach the WordPress dashboard and can document which locations and products each entry is intended to cover.

Do not copy a rate from another store merely because the storefront looks similar. A rate can depend on the seller’s location, the customer’s location, the product or service, and whether shipping is taxable. Establish the applicable treatment with a qualified tax professional or current authority guidance, then use WooCommerce to represent that treatment.

How do I enable WooCommerce tax settings?

Before the detailed Tax page is available, enable tax calculations in WooCommerce’s General settings. You need access to the WordPress dashboard for the store.

  1. Sign in to WordPress for the store. If you need to locate the dashboard from Bluehost, use Bluehost’s “Activate and Access the WooCommerce Plugin” instructions, updated August 20, 2026.
  2. Go to WooCommerce > Settings > General.
  3. In the Taxes and coupons area, select Enable tax rates and calculations.
  4. Save the changes.
  5. Open WooCommerce > Settings > Tax. The detailed tax settings should now be available.

If the Tax tab does not appear after saving, return to General and confirm that the checkbox is selected and that the change was saved. Confirm that you are editing the same WordPress site connected to the Bluehost Sell Online plan, rather than a staging site or a different installation. A browser refresh or a new administrator session can help you see the updated menu, but it does not replace saving the setting.

WooCommerce’s official “Setting up taxes in WooCommerce” documentation explains the configuration controls, not a merchant’s legal obligation: it describes how WooCommerce handles taxes, VAT, and GST based on the settings, “not when or what to charge.” The correct setup therefore depends on your circumstances, products, and applicable tax rules.

Which store address and customer location should I use?

WooCommerce uses your store’s business address and the customer-location setting as inputs to tax and shipping calculations. An incorrect store address or a customer-location choice that does not match how you intend to calculate taxes can lead to unexpected checkout results.

In WooCommerce > Settings > General, review the store address and the Default customer location option. WooCommerce’s General settings documentation describes these location behaviors:

The Psychology of Money: Timeless lessons on wealth, greed, and happiness
  • Ideal for Gifting
  • Ideal for a bookworm
  • Compact for travelling
  • Shop location: use the store location as the customer’s default location.
  • No location by default: defer tax and shipping calculations until the shopper enters an address.
  • Geolocate: use the shopper’s location as determined by WooCommerce’s location feature.

Choose based on your business’s setup and applicable rules rather than assuming one option is right for every store. Use the physical seller address required by your configuration, and verify the outcome with checkout addresses that represent the locations you need to support.

The choice changes when WooCommerce has enough information to calculate. With a shop-location default, a visitor can see a calculation based on the store location before entering an address. With no location by default, the amount may remain uncalculated until the shopper supplies an address. Geolocation can provide a location estimate, but you should still test the final checkout behavior with an entered address. The option that is convenient for browsing is not automatically the option that matches your tax rules.

Keep the address current when the business moves or when the store’s operating entity changes. A complete, accurate address is also a prerequisite for WooCommerce Tax automation. Do not use a warehouse, owner’s home, or other address simply because it is easy to enter unless it is the correct business address for your configuration and advice.

How do I configure tax rates and tax behavior?

Once taxes are enabled, open WooCommerce > Settings > Tax. WooCommerce allows merchants to configure tax behavior and maintain manual rate tables; the correct values and options depend on the merchant’s jurisdiction and products.

Review calculation and display choices

Use the Tax settings to choose the behavior appropriate to your store, including how tax is calculated and displayed. Depending on the options shown in your installation, review whether prices are treated as tax-inclusive or tax-exclusive, when calculations occur, and how amounts are presented in the cart and checkout. Select only behavior that matches your pricing policy and professional advice. A display choice changes what shoppers see; it does not change the underlying obligation.

Check the labels in your current WooCommerce version because wording can vary. Save after each deliberate change, then run a checkout test. Looking at the cart, checkout, order record, and email together helps reveal a mismatch in where tax is displayed or how totals are rounded.

Enter manual rates carefully

WooCommerce tax-rate rows can include the country, state, postcode, city, rate, tax name, priority, whether the rate is compound, whether it applies to shipping, and the tax class. Treat each field as part of the calculation rule rather than as a label alone. A wrong location, rate, priority, class, or shipping setting can make a checkout result differ from what you intend.

  • Country, state, postcode, and city: define the location pattern that can match a customer. A blank or broad field may match more addresses than a narrowly specified field, so enter values intentionally.
  • Rate: enter the rate supplied for the relevant product and location. Do not turn a percentage from an invoice or spreadsheet into a universal rate without confirming its scope.
  • Tax name: use a name that makes the order and reports understandable, especially when more than one tax is configured.
  • Priority: controls how competing rows are considered when more than one rate could match. Review priorities whenever you add an overlapping row.
  • Compound: indicates whether a rate is applied in a compound manner relative to other rates. Use it only when the applicable treatment calls for it.
  • Shipping: identifies whether the rate applies to shipping. Do not enable it merely because the store sells physical goods.
  • Tax class: connects the row to products assigned to that class. A row in the wrong class may never apply to the product being tested.

Maintain rates only after establishing which rates and classes apply to your products and locations. This guide does not provide a universal rate or jurisdiction-specific collection rule; WooCommerce likewise recommends consulting a qualified tax professional or accountant about tax, VAT, or GST obligations.

Check the product tax class

Tax class is one of the attributes WooCommerce can use when applying a rate. If your products do not all receive the same treatment, confirm that the classes assigned in your store and the rates configured for those classes match the advice you have received for your business. Do not assume the software will determine the correct class or legal treatment for a product.

Test at least one product from every class you use. A rate table can be perfectly formed yet produce no tax when the product is assigned to a different class. Conversely, assigning every product to one class can cause an apparently successful test while misclassifying products that require different treatment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Document changes and avoid conflicting rows

Keep a simple record of the reason for each rate row, the locations and products it covers, and the date it was reviewed. This makes it easier to find a conflicting priority or obsolete location entry when a calculation changes. Remove or disable rows only after checking existing orders and reports, since historical records may rely on the settings that were active when those orders were created.

Should I use manual rates or WooCommerce Tax?

Manual rates give you direct control over rate-table entries; WooCommerce Tax is a separate extension that automates checkout tax calculation in supported locations. Neither approach establishes where you have a tax obligation or handles filing and remittance for you.

Consideration Manual WooCommerce rates WooCommerce Tax
Setup Enable tax calculations in General settings, then configure tax options and rate tables in the Tax settings. Requires the WooCommerce Tax extension, a complete store address, and a WordPress.com connection.
Calculation inputs Uses the tax behavior and rate-table values you configure, including location fields, rate, priority, class, and shipping applicability. Calculates checkout tax using the store address and customer address; its documented behavior uses the customer shipping address.
Availability Manual tax settings are configured in WooCommerce; the documentation does not state a country-availability list for this option. The current WooCommerce Tax Guide documents availability in the United States, Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom, and the EU countries listed in that guide.
Control and maintenance You enter and maintain rate-table details and choose available tax behavior options. Automates checkout calculation but constrains some manual choices. The documentation does not establish that it removes all merchant configuration or review work.
Filing and obligations Does not determine where you must collect, file returns, or remit tax. Also does not determine where you have an obligation, file returns, or remit tax.

WooCommerce Tax requires the extension itself, a complete store address, and a connection to WordPress.com. Confirm those prerequisites before troubleshooting a missing or inactive automation option. Its documented coverage includes the United States, Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom, and the EU countries listed in the current guide. Coverage is a software-availability detail, not a conclusion that your business has an obligation in any of those places.

WooCommerce’s official Tax Guide summarizes the automated calculation this way: “WooCommerce Tax calculates sales tax at checkout using your store address and the customer’s address.” The extension uses the customer shipping address for its calculation. It can reduce the work of maintaining manual rows, but it may constrain some manual choices, so compare its behavior with the requirements of your store before switching.

Manual rates are preferable when you need explicit control over classes, priorities, location fields, or shipping applicability and have a reliable process for maintaining them. Automation may be more convenient when your store and country are supported and you want checkout calculations driven by the service. In either case, retain a review process and professional advice for registration, collection, filing, and remittance decisions.

How can I check whether tax calculates correctly at checkout?

Test representative checkout addresses and products, then inspect WooCommerce’s tax reporting. A displayed tax amount confirms what the configured software calculated for that test; it does not prove that the rate, collection location, or legal treatment is correct.

  1. Choose representative products, including any that use different tax classes or shipping treatment.
  2. Run test orders or checkout scenarios using relevant customer addresses. Include an address that should match a configured rate and one that should not, where your professional guidance identifies that distinction.
  3. Check whether tax appears at the expected stage and whether the displayed calculation matches your configured behavior.
  4. Review the order details and WooCommerce tax reporting to confirm that the same amounts and tax names were recorded.
  5. Correct the store address, customer-location behavior, rate rows, tax classes, or other settings as appropriate, then test again.

Use a test product price and shipping configuration that reflect real orders. Check the cart, checkout, order confirmation, and customer email rather than relying on one screen. If you use different currencies, coupons, or shipping methods, test each combination that can alter the taxable total according to your rules. Do not publish a conclusion from a single test address.

If a calculation is missing or unexpected, check the basics first: tax calculations are enabled, the store address is complete and accurate, the selected default customer location is suitable, and the relevant rate matches the location and product class being tested. For automated calculation, also confirm that the extension’s prerequisites are met. If the software result appears consistent but you are unsure whether the underlying treatment is legally correct, ask a qualified tax professional.

Common Bluehost and WooCommerce tax setup problems

The Tax section is visible in Bluehost, but checkout is unchanged

Bluehost’s Payments > Tax area is a basic control that synchronizes with WooCommerce. Open the WordPress dashboard and verify that tax calculations are enabled and that the detailed Tax settings contain the intended rates and classes. Check a new test checkout after saving rather than using an old cart that may have retained earlier totals.

The WooCommerce Tax tab is missing

Go back to WooCommerce > Settings > General, select Enable tax rates and calculations, save, and reopen Settings. Make sure you are working on the store connected to the Bluehost plan. If you are using automation, confirm that the WooCommerce Tax extension is installed and that the required WordPress.com connection has been completed.

The tax applies to the wrong customer

Review the store address and Default customer location. A shop-location default can calculate before a shopper enters an address, while no location by default waits for address information. Geolocation may estimate a location, but the entered checkout address remains important for testing. Compare the address used by the calculation with the address your shipping workflow actually uses.

A rate row never matches

Inspect every location field, the tax class assigned to the product, and the row’s priority. A postcode or city value that is too narrow can exclude the test address; a row assigned to another class cannot apply to the product. Check whether the row is configured to apply to shipping when the order includes a shipping charge.

Two rates appear or the wrong rate wins

Look for overlapping location rows and review their priorities and compound settings. Compare the result with a test address that isolates each intended rule. Do not solve an unexplained result by adding another row until you understand which existing row matched.

What tax setup does—and does not—do for your business

Bluehost and WooCommerce provide tools for configuring and calculating tax. A correct software workflow is only one part of the process: your business must still determine where it has obligations, what rules apply to its products and transactions, and whether it must register, file, or remit.

WooCommerce’s documentation distinguishes software configuration from tax advice. Its automated option calculates checkout tax but does not decide every place where a merchant has an obligation, file returns, or remit tax. Treat any calculated amount as the result of the settings and inputs—not as a legal determination. For advice about your own sales, products, or locations, consult a qualified tax professional or accountant.

A practical setup checklist

  1. Confirm you are editing the correct Bluehost Sell Online site.
  2. Review Payments > Tax in Bluehost AI Store.
  3. Open WordPress and enable tax rates and calculations in WooCommerce General settings.
  4. Enter and verify the business store address.
  5. Choose the default customer-location behavior that fits your workflow.
  6. Open WooCommerce Tax settings and decide whether manual rates or WooCommerce Tax is appropriate.
  7. For manual rates, verify location fields, rate, name, priority, compound behavior, shipping applicability, and tax class.
  8. Assign products to the intended classes.
  9. If using WooCommerce Tax, install the extension, complete the store address, connect WordPress.com, and confirm country availability.
  10. Run representative checkout tests and review order and tax reports.
  11. Keep records of the settings and obtain professional advice on obligations, registrations, returns, and remittance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which countries does WooCommerce Tax support?

The WooCommerce Tax Guide lists the United States, Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom, and specified EU countries. Check that current guide for the exact EU country list before choosing the extension, since its coverage is a software availability detail rather than a statement about where your business must collect tax.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does WooCommerce Tax use a customer’s billing or shipping address?

The WooCommerce Tax documentation says the extension uses the customer shipping address for its calculation. If your store’s checkout or fulfillment setup differs from that assumption, verify the calculated result against your actual workflow.

Can I use WooCommerce Tax without connecting WordPress.com?

No. WooCommerce lists a WordPress.com connection, a complete store address, and the WooCommerce Tax extension among its prerequisites for automated calculation.

Does a tax amount shown in a test checkout prove my store is compliant?

No. It shows the outcome of the software’s settings and address inputs for that transaction. It does not establish your registration, filing, remittance, or collection obligations.

Why can’t I see WooCommerce’s Tax settings?

Enable Enable tax rates and calculations under WooCommerce > Settings > General, save, and reopen the settings. Also verify that you are in the WordPress site connected to your Bluehost store.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What address should I enter for the store?

Use the business address required for your store’s tax and shipping configuration, and keep it complete and accurate. WooCommerce uses the store address as an input; it does not decide which address is legally appropriate.

Does Bluehost AI Store configure every tax option?

No. Bluehost’s Payments > Tax area provides basic controls and syncs with WooCommerce. Detailed rates, tax classes, location fields, priorities, compound behavior, and shipping applicability are configured in WooCommerce.

How do I know whether a manual rate is being applied?

Test a representative product and customer address, then inspect the cart, checkout, order details, and WooCommerce tax reporting. If the amount is missing, check the location fields, product tax class, priority, and shipping setting.

The Bottom Line

Use Websites > Manage Store > Payments > Tax in Bluehost AI Store for the basic control, then enable taxes and configure detailed behavior in WooCommerce > Settings > Tax. Verify the store address, customer-location setting, rate rows, priorities, tax classes, and shipping treatment with representative checkout tests.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Manual WooCommerce rates and WooCommerce Tax can calculate checkout amounts, but neither determines where your business must collect, register, file, or remit. Treat the software result as a configuration check and consult a qualified tax professional for your actual obligations.
