In the desktop Steam client, open Steam > Settings > Downloads, choose Clear Download Cache, and select Confirm. Steam’s official support guidance says this does not affect currently installed games, but Steam will require you to sign in again afterward.

Cache clearing is a troubleshooting step for downloads, updates, and some related startup problems. It is not an uninstall, does not move your library, and does not verify installed files. The guide below explains what is protected, what is uncertain for unfinished downloads, and which Steam repair tool fits each symptom.

How do you clear Steam’s download cache?

The built-in control is available in the desktop client. You do not need to uninstall Steam, reinstall a game, or create a backup merely to clear this cache. The operation is a client troubleshooting step, so start with Steam’s own menu rather than deleting folders from your computer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the Steam desktop client.
  2. In the upper-left menu, select Steam > Settings.
  3. Select Downloads in the Settings sidebar.
  4. Scroll to the bottom of the Downloads page and select Clear Download Cache.
  5. Choose Confirm when Steam asks you to proceed.
  6. Sign in to Steam again when prompted.
  7. After signing in, open Library and check the affected game or download.

Steam can change menu wording or placement in a future client update. These labels reflect the desktop client path documented by Steam Support and reviewed on October 30, 2026.

The confirmation is the last step before Steam carries out the cache operation. Expect to authenticate again afterward: Steam’s own FAQ explicitly says a new login is required. Have the account sign-in information you normally use available, but do not interpret this as a request to reinstall Steam or your games.

What should you check after signing in?

  • Confirm that the game still appears in Library.
  • Open the Downloads view and see whether the affected update or installation can resume.
  • If a game appears uninstalled, check its library location before assuming that files were deleted.
  • If an installed game still fails to launch, use Steam’s file-verification tool rather than clearing the cache repeatedly.

These checks help distinguish a download problem from a library-recognition or game-file problem. Steam confirms the protection of currently installed games, but does not specify the exact outcome for every unfinished item in the queue. Look at the Downloads page after signing in instead of assuming that an in-progress item will keep its previous percentage or position.

What does clearing the download cache actually do?

Steam describes the operation as flushing locally cached configuration data and obtaining that data again from Steam’s servers. The official FAQ presents it as a possible fix when games will not download or start, while Steam’s broader troubleshooting guidance includes it among steps for update and installation errors.

That makes cache clearing a reset of Steam’s download-related local data, not a repair of the game files stored in your library. It can help when cached information is stale or inconsistent, but Steam does not guarantee that it will cure every failed download, update, or launch problem. If the same error returns, use the symptom to choose a different troubleshooting step rather than running the cache command over and over.

It is also not a disk-cleanup feature. Steam describes cached configuration data being flushed and obtained again, not installed games being removed or a particular amount of storage being reclaimed. If your goal is to make room on a drive, this is not a substitute for managing game installations or storage locations.

Does it remove installed games?

No. Steam’s official support FAQ states: “This process will not affect your currently installed games, but you will need to log into Steam afterwards.” The statement specifically protects currently installed games; it should not be expanded into a promise about every other item in the Downloads queue.

What about a partially downloaded game?

Steam’s reviewed documentation does not specify whether every unfinished download keeps its exact percentage, queue position, or temporary data after the cache is cleared. Do not treat preservation of an in-progress download as guaranteed. After signing in, inspect the Downloads page and let Steam determine whether the item resumes, rechecks, or needs attention.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This uncertainty is different from the statement about installed games: Steam addresses installed games directly, but does not define every possible state of an unfinished download. If you have a large download in progress, be prepared to check it afterward rather than relying on a promise that it will continue at precisely the same point.

Does cache clearing verify or repair game files?

No. File verification is a separate operation that compares an installed game’s files with Steam’s expected files. If the problem is missing or corrupt content in a game that is already installed, use Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files instead.

Do you need a backup before clearing Steam’s cache?

No drive image or game backup is required for the built-in cache-clear command because Steam says currently installed games are unaffected. There is no need to buy a drive or a repair product as the first step for this built-in troubleshooting action. A backup becomes relevant when you make a different, higher-risk change such as moving a Steam installation.

When is a backup recommended?

Steam’s moving guide highly recommends backing up the steamapps folder before moving an installation. That advice applies to the move itself, not to clearing the download cache. The same guide warns that some third-party game saves may be stored outside steamapps, so a copy of that folder is not a guarantee that every save is included.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you choose to move an installation, treat that as its own project: make the recommended copy first and consider where any saves outside the folder are stored. An external SSD may serve as a backup destination, but that is separate from clearing cache; Steam cautions against installing Steam and games on external hard drives. Do not mistake a backup destination for an endorsed place to run the installation.

Why should you avoid uninstalling Steam as a cache fix?

Uninstalling Steam is not equivalent to selecting Clear Download Cache. Steam warns that uninstalling the client can delete game content, so do not choose an uninstall or reinstall workflow when the built-in cache control is the only operation you need. Steam’s separate guidance about reinstalling the client to the same location belongs to a different troubleshooting situation; it is not a required part of this cache procedure.

Why does Steam show a previously installed game as uninstalled?

A game that appears missing is usually a library-recognition or location question, not proof that clearing the cache deleted its files. Steam says that starting an installation or launch can prompt it to recognize existing files when those files remain in the proper library location.

First check whether the storage location that holds the game is available. A disconnected drive or an alternate library that Steam no longer lists can make existing files unavailable to the client. The game’s display as uninstalled is a separate scenario from the expected result of clearing the download cache, so do not respond by deleting the folder or immediately downloading another copy over it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do you reconnect an existing library?

  1. Open Steam > Settings > Storage.
  2. Review the listed storage locations and check whether the drive containing the game is present.
  3. If the game is in an alternate Steam library, add that existing library location through the Storage controls.
  4. Return to Library and start the affected game’s installation or launch flow so Steam can scan for files that are already there.

Steam’s older missing-games guidance describes a Downloads-based library-folder path, but the current Storage page is the safer place to manage library locations. Do not delete, rename, or overwrite an existing game folder while trying to make Steam recognize it. The goal is to reconnect the location where the files already live, not to replace those files.

What if the drive is disconnected?

Reconnect the drive and make sure the library location is available to Steam before changing files. If the location is present but Steam still cannot use it, the problem may involve folder permissions, a damaged library folder, or a storage device error rather than download-cache data.

Pay attention to the form of the error. A game missing from the Library points first to recognition and location; repeated write failures or a drive that drops offline points toward storage. Those symptoms call for different steps, and clearing the cache does not establish that a drive or library folder is healthy.

How do you repair an installed game that will not launch?

Use file verification when the game is installed but reports missing, corrupt, or damaged content. This check is distinct from clearing the download cache and may take several minutes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Library in Steam.
  2. Right-click the affected game and select Properties.
  3. Choose Installed Files.
  4. Select Verify integrity of game files.
  5. Wait for Steam to complete the check, then review the result and try launching the game again.

Steam notes that some local configuration files can fail verification normally. A verification notice does not automatically mean the entire installation is unusable; pay attention to which files Steam identifies and whether the game’s launch problem remains.

Use verification for an affected installed game, not as a general way to reconnect a missing library. Conversely, a cache clear does not check whether individual installed files are intact. Keeping these operations separate avoids treating one tool as a universal repair for unrelated symptoms.

What should you try when downloads or updates still fail?

Choose the next step according to the symptom instead of repeating cache clearing indiscriminately. Steam’s troubleshooting guidance points to several conditional alternatives. None has to be performed automatically after every cache clear; use the one that best matches what is still going wrong.

Restart Steam and the computer

A full restart is a reasonable first follow-up when the client or an update remains stuck after the cache operation. It reopens Steam’s services and gives the client another opportunity to establish a clean connection. If the issue disappears, there is no need to proceed through every other troubleshooting option simply because it is listed here.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Repair the affected library folder

If the error suggests a folder, permissions, or library-location problem, open Steam > Settings > Storage, select the … menu beside the affected location, and choose Repair Folder. This targets the library folder rather than the download cache. Choose the location associated with the problem, rather than treating folder repair as a routine step for every download failure.

Try another download region

If several downloads fail in a way that suggests a content-server or regional connection issue, open Steam > Settings > Downloads > Download Region and test another region. This is a diagnostic alternative, not a mandatory step for every failed installation. It is most relevant when the pattern points to a server-region issue, rather than a single damaged installed game or inaccessible library folder.

Investigate storage errors

Repeated write failures, a drive that disconnects, or operating-system reports of disk trouble point toward the storage device or file system. In that situation, changing Steam’s cache is unlikely to resolve the underlying hardware or drive error; address the storage problem before repeatedly starting downloads. An internal SSD may be relevant only if a separate storage diagnosis points to a drive issue; it is not a purchase requirement for clearing the cache.

Which Steam troubleshooting option fits your symptom?

The operations below solve different classes of problems. Select the narrowest action that matches what you are seeing. Clearing the cache is suited to suspected cached download-data trouble; the other choices address game files, library access, folder repair, or a possible server-region problem.

Symptom First action Steam path What it addresses
Download or update behaves as if cached data is stale Clear Download Cache Steam > Settings > Downloads > Clear Download Cache Flushes locally cached configuration data and obtains it again from Steam servers
An installed game reports missing or corrupt content Verify integrity of game files Library > right-click game > Properties > Installed Files Checks the selected game’s installed files
Steam shows an existing game as uninstalled Reconnect or add the existing library Steam > Settings > Storage Helps Steam recognize files in the correct library location
Library-folder permission or access error Repair Folder Steam > Settings > Storage > … > Repair Folder Repairs the affected Steam library folder
Multiple downloads suggest a content-server problem Test another Download Region Steam > Settings > Downloads > Download Region Checks whether the selected server region is contributing to the failure

This comparison is a way to avoid mismatched fixes. For example, if the game is installed and only its files appear damaged, verification is the relevant check. If Steam cannot see an existing library, reconnect the location. If several downloads point to region or server trouble, test a different region. The cache command is useful in its own lane, but Steam presents it as a possible troubleshooting step rather than a guaranteed cure.

What mistakes should you avoid?

  • Do not confuse cache clearing with uninstalling. The cache command is a built-in troubleshooting reset; uninstalling Steam can remove game content.
  • Do not promise that an unfinished download keeps its exact progress. Steam explicitly addresses currently installed games, but the reviewed guidance does not define the outcome for every partial download.
  • Do not verify files to solve a library-location problem. Verification applies to an installed game’s files; a missing-game display may require reconnecting the correct Storage location.
  • Do not delete an existing library folder while reconnecting it. Add or repair the location through Steam’s Storage controls instead.
  • Do not assume a cache clear is a universal download fix. Restarting, repairing a folder, changing the download region, or investigating the drive may be more appropriate for the observed failure.
  • Do not treat a steamapps copy as a complete save backup. Steam notes that some third-party saves can live outside that folder.
  • Do not buy hardware just to clear the cache. Steam’s built-in command does not require a new drive, paid repair utility, or game reinstall.

Frequently asked questions

Is Steam’s download cache the same as a web-browser cache?

No. Steam’s support description concerns locally cached configuration data used by the Steam client and its download process. The command is performed inside Steam Settings, not through a browser’s privacy or storage controls.

Can you clear the cache from the Steam mobile app?

The documented menu path applies to the desktop Steam client. Steam’s official instructions reviewed here do not establish an equivalent control or path in the mobile app, so use the desktop client for this procedure.

Will clearing the cache recover disk space from installed games?

Steam describes the operation as flushing cached configuration data, not removing installed game files or reclaiming game-library storage. It should therefore be treated as a troubleshooting reset, not as a disk-cleanup method.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if the cache clear succeeds but the same error returns?

Match the next action to the failure: verify the affected game’s files for corruption, reconnect or repair its library folder for location and permission errors, or test another download region when server routing is suspect. Persistent write failures should prompt an investigation of the drive itself.

Does Steam’s installed-games statement cover every local game-related file?

No broader guarantee is stated. Steam explicitly says currently installed games are unaffected; it does not use that sentence to classify every temporary download item, third-party save, or other local file.

Do you need to back up games before clearing the cache?

No. Steam says the cache operation does not affect currently installed games, so a backup is not required for this step. Steam’s separate recommendation to back up steamapps applies before moving an installation, and it may not include third-party saves stored elsewhere.

Does clearing the cache mean you have to reinstall Steam?

No. The cache control is built into Steam’s desktop Settings. Steam requires you to log in again afterward, but that is not the same as uninstalling or reinstalling the client.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can clearing the cache fix every download error?

No. Steam lists cache clearing as a possible troubleshooting step for download, update, and related startup trouble, not a guaranteed fix. If the issue remains, choose a next step based on whether it concerns game files, the library folder, the download region, or storage.
