Most Starlink problems are fixed faster when you identify the failing layer before changing equipment. Check the Starlink app first, then separate satellite performance from local Wi‑Fi, inspect obstructions and weather, and finally check power, cables, and router status. A wired test is the quickest way to show whether a slow room is a Wi‑Fi problem or whether the Starlink connection itself is impaired.
This guide follows that order for slow speeds, repeated dropouts, an “Offline” status, obstruction alerts, weather interruptions, and router lights. It also shows what evidence to collect before opening a support ticket.
What should I check first when Starlink is slow or offline?
Start in the Starlink app rather than replacing hardware. Connect your phone to the Starlink Wi‑Fi network and review alerts, outage history, obstruction results, and connection statistics. Note when the problem occurs, whether weather is present, and whether every device is affected.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →| What you observe | Most likely layer | First check | Useful next action |
|---|---|---|---|
| Only one phone, laptop, console, or TV is slow | That device or its local Wi‑Fi link | Test another device beside the router | Check distance, Wi‑Fi band, VPN, and local interference |
| Several devices are slow near the router | Starlink link, router, power, or cable | Compare the app with a wired test | Run a clean speed test and inspect connections |
| Dropouts coincide with moving branches or a roofline | Obstructed sky view | Run “Check for Obstructions” in the app | Relocate or elevate the terminal if safe |
| Short outages occur during heavy rain, snow, storms, or high winds | Weather | Compare the outage time with conditions | Retest after weather improves |
| The app reports a cable or power issue | Power supply, cable, or connector | Inspect the complete cable path and reseat plugs | Try another outlet or an approved spare cable |
Do not assume there is one universal “normal Starlink speed.” Performance changes with plan, location, network demand, device capability, and local Wi‑Fi. A comparable test from the same device, connection method, and time of day is more useful than an isolated number.

How do I tell whether the problem is Starlink or my Wi‑Fi?
Compare a device close to the router with a direct Ethernet connection. If Ethernet is healthy while a distant room is slow, the satellite link is probably working and the fault is local coverage. If both nearby Wi‑Fi and Ethernet are poor, continue with Starlink-side checks.
Run a clean speed comparison
- Connect to the Starlink network and open the Cloudflare Speed Test.
- Record the date, time, device, connection type, and result.
- Check the test’s “Your Network” field. If it does not show SpaceX, disable the VPN and repeat the test.
- Run a second test on a device beside the router.
- Where your kit supports it, connect a laptop by Ethernet to the power-supply Ethernet connection and repeat the test over a similar period.
A direct wired result gives support a cleaner comparison than a test taken through a distant access point. It also prevents a weak signal through walls from being mistaken for a satellite-capacity problem.
When one device is the outlier
If other devices work normally, investigate the affected device before changing the dish. Test it near the router, compare its 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz connections when both are available, temporarily disable its VPN, and check whether another application is consuming the connection. A single-device fault does not establish that Starlink service is failing.
How do I fix Starlink obstructions?
Use the Starlink app’s “Check for Obstructions” tool. The terminal needs a clear view of the sky while satellites move overhead; tree branches, poles, roofs, buildings, and debris can interrupt service. Obstructions may be intermittent, so a branch that moves in wind can cause dropouts even when the dish appears clear at ground level.

Read the obstruction result correctly
- Look for the direction and pattern shown by the app, not just a single object directly above the terminal.
- Watch for seasonal growth and branches that swing into the view during wind.
- Check the entire field around the terminal, including roof edges, chimneys, poles, and nearby structures.
- Repeat the scan after moving the terminal; do not treat a relocation as successful until the app shows a materially clearer view and the connection remains stable.
When relocation or a mount is justified
If ground placement cannot provide a clear view, an elevated roof, pole, or wall position may be appropriate. Mounting accessories are relevant only when the obstruction scan identifies a visibility problem. Roof work introduces fall, weather, and property risks; use a qualified installer when the location cannot be reached safely from the ground. Do not place the terminal where maintenance or snow removal would require unsafe access.
Is Starlink slow because of weather?
Heavy rain, snow, storms, and high winds can produce brief interruptions or reduced service. Check whether the timestamps of the dropouts match the weather and retest after conditions improve. Service may recover quickly once the event passes, so a short weather-correlated interruption is not, by itself, evidence of failed hardware.
If snow or ice covers the terminal, clear it gently only when you can do so safely and without climbing onto an unstable surface. Never trade a connectivity test for a fall or electrical hazard. If the same outages continue in clear, calm conditions, return to obstruction, power, cable, and wired-test checks.
Why does Starlink say “Offline”?
“Offline” can result from a temporary weather event, a power interruption, a loose or damaged cable, a connector problem, or a hardware fault. Read the app alert and note its time before changing anything.

Inspect power and cable connections
- Follow the entire Starlink cable from the terminal to the router or power supply.
- Look for kinks, cuts, crushed sections, exposed conductors, corrosion, bent pins, or water damage.
- Unplug and firmly reseat each connector; confirm that it is fully inserted and not under sideways strain.
- Inspect the power supply and router for damage or abnormal heat.
- Try another wall outlet where appropriate, avoiding overloaded extension arrangements.
- If a cable alert is present, test an approved spare of the correct generation and connector type. Starlink recommends official cables to avoid compatibility problems.
Power-cycle once and observe
- Disconnect power according to the instructions for your kit.
- For the sudden-offline workflow, leave the system disconnected for at least 10 seconds.
- Reconnect power and wait while the terminal and router start.
- Watch the app and indicator state, recording the time and any alert that returns.
Repeatedly cycling power without recording what changed rarely adds diagnostic value. If the system comes back only briefly, document that pattern rather than assuming the reboot repaired it.
What do the red and white Starlink router lights mean?
Indicator behavior depends on the Starlink hardware generation, so identify the kit before applying a definitive interpretation. The circular installation guide describes pulsing white as connecting or updating, solid white as connected to the internet, and solid red as not connected.
| Indicator state in the circular guide | Meaning | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Pulsing white | Connecting or updating | Allow startup to finish and check the app for a current alert |
| Solid white | Connected to the internet | If a device is still slow, compare Wi‑Fi with Ethernet and test that device |
| Solid red | Not connected | Check the app, weather, obstructions, power, and cable path |
The Standard 4 documentation includes additional router and power-supply states, such as no power, bypass mode, and hardware or thermal conditions. Use the guide for the exact generation instead of applying a light code from another kit. A light alone cannot distinguish an obstruction from a damaged cable.
How do I test Starlink for packet loss and latency?
Use repeatable commands to collect evidence, not to promise a self-repair. Run them while the problem is occurring and record the time, connection method, and destination.

Ping for packet loss
On Windows, run:
ping -n 200 8.8.8.8
On Linux or macOS, run:
ping -c 200 8.8.8.8
Save the packet-loss percentage, minimum and maximum response times, and the test timestamp. Repeat once over Ethernet if possible, then compare with the same test over Wi‑Fi.
Trace a latency path
Run a traceroute to 8.8.8.8 and to the endpoint destination involved in the complaint. A route that changes between tests can indicate an upstream path difference; it does not, by itself, prove that the dish is defective. Include the complete output in a support ticket when requested.
When should I add Ethernet, mesh Wi‑Fi, a cable, or a mount?
Choose hardware only after the diagnostic result identifies the layer. Each accessory addresses a different limitation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems| Remedy | Use it when | What it cannot fix | Compatibility or safety note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Starlink Ethernet Adapter | You need a direct wired test or a wired connection to mesh or third-party networking equipment | Obstructions, weather interruptions, satellite outages, or failed power hardware | Exact compatibility depends on kit and router generation |
| Replacement or spare Starlink cable | The app reports a cable issue, the cable is visibly damaged, or a spare restores service | Weak Wi‑Fi coverage or a blocked sky view | Verify generation and connector type; official cables are recommended |
| Mesh node or extender | Ethernet and nearby-router tests are healthy but distant rooms have weak Wi‑Fi | Satellite capacity, obstructions, and weather-related interruptions | Large homes, thick walls, and signal-blocking materials are the relevant use cases |
| Mounting accessory or installation service | The obstruction scan shows the current location cannot see enough sky | Power, cable, router, or account faults | Consider physical access, roof safety, and local installation requirements |
A generic Wi‑Fi booster is not a universal Starlink fix. Likewise, changing DNS, installing a PC repair utility, or enabling a VPN cannot remove a physical obstruction, repair a damaged cable, or restore power to a failed terminal.

What evidence should I send Starlink support?
Open a support ticket after the app, obstruction, weather, power, cable, and reset checks fail or the fault returns. Give support a concise timeline and the tests already completed.
- Exact dates and times of slow periods or dropouts
- Weather conditions and whether the problem stopped when they improved
- App screenshots showing alerts, obstruction results, and connection statistics
- Cloudflare Speed Test results, including the “Your Network” field
- Whether the test used Wi‑Fi near the router or direct Ethernet
- Ping and traceroute output, including destination and timestamp
- What happened after reseating cables, trying an outlet, using an approved spare cable, and power-cycling
- Your kit or router generation and any indicator state observed
This record lets support distinguish a recurring visibility or weather pattern from a local-network or hardware fault. It also prevents the same checks being repeated without new information.
What is the fastest troubleshooting order for a recurring dropout?
- Open the Starlink app and capture the current alert, outage history, and obstruction view.
- Determine whether one device or every device is affected.
- Run Cloudflare Speed Test with the VPN disabled if the network field is not SpaceX.
- Compare a device beside the router with direct Ethernet where supported.
- Check the obstruction scan and look for moving branches, roof edges, poles, or debris.
- Compare the dropout time with rain, snow, storms, or high winds.
- Inspect the full cable and power path, reseat connectors, and try another outlet when appropriate.
- Power-cycle once, wait for startup, and record the resulting alert or light.
- Run ping and traceroute tests if latency or packet loss is part of the complaint.
- Escalate with screenshots, timestamps, test outputs, and the hardware checks you completed.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long should I wait after a storm before judging Starlink?
Wait until rain, snow, or high winds have clearly eased, then repeat the same nearby-router or Ethernet test. If interruptions continue in settled weather, treat them as a separate diagnostic problem rather than extending the weather explanation.
Can I use any Ethernet adapter or replacement cable with Starlink?
No. Adapter and cable compatibility varies by kit and router generation. Match the connector and hardware generation, and prefer official Starlink cables when replacing a damaged lead.
Will a factory reset remove an obstruction?
No software reset can change the terminal’s physical view of the sky. Resolve the obstruction shown by the app first; reset procedures should be considered only when the kit’s official support workflow calls for them.
Why is streaming bad on one television while my laptop works?
That pattern points first to the television’s Wi‑Fi path or the TV itself. Test the TV near the router, compare it with another device in the same room, and use Ethernet if the model and Starlink kit support it.
What should I record if the red light returns intermittently?
Note the exact time, the kit generation, the app alert, weather, and whether the light appears after a power interruption or cable movement. A short video or screenshot paired with wired-test results can make the support diagnosis more actionable.
