The best settings for a smooth open-world co-op game are the ones that remove your specific bottleneck. Start by updating the game and graphics driver, closing competing background tasks, and recording average FPS alongside 1% Low FPS during a repeatable traversal or combat route. Then lower shadows, reflections, and lighting before testing ambient occlusion, volumetric effects, anti-aliasing, and render scaling one at a time.

There is no universal Low, Medium, or High preset for an unnamed game. Upscaling, frame generation, frame caps, variable refresh rate, network settings, and hardware upgrades solve different problems. Use the process below to identify whether your hitching comes from rendering, asset loading, CPU or memory limits, display timing, or the co-op connection.

What should I measure before changing PC settings?

Measure a repeatable gameplay sequence and compare both average FPS and 1% Low FPS. Average FPS shows overall throughput; 1% Low FPS is a consistency indicator used in NVIDIA’s FrameView guidance and is often more revealing when an open-world game feels uneven.

Record your starting point

  • Game and patch: Note the exact game version, because an update can change shader compilation, streaming, or graphics options.
  • Display target: Record resolution, refresh rate, HDR status if relevant, and whether the game runs fullscreen, borderless, or windowed.
  • Hardware: Write down the GPU, CPU, installed RAM, and whether the game is on an SSD or an older hard disk drive.
  • Software: Record your operating-system version and graphics-driver version.
  • Scene: Choose a route that includes the problem area: a busy settlement, a long traversal segment, a combat encounter, or a mission with several players and effects.

Run the same route for long enough to include the hitch, not just a quiet menu or empty room. Keep camera movement and party size as similar as practical. Change one setting group at a time, repeat the route, and write down the new average and 1% Low values. This is a comparison method, not a claim of a particular FPS gain; the game and system determine the result.

FrameView’s PC-latency metric can help describe a render pipeline, but it is not a complete measurement of mouse latency or display latency. Treat an FPS counter as evidence for a diagnosis, not as a guarantee that the game feels responsive.

Which free fixes should I try first?

Apply software and configuration fixes before buying hardware. They are reversible, cost nothing, and can reveal whether the problem is caused by an outdated build, a background process, or the wrong GPU.

  1. Update the game. Install the current patch offered by the game’s launcher or platform. If a patch has just shipped, read its notes for known stutter, shader, streaming, or multiplayer issues before assuming your hardware is at fault.
  2. Update the graphics driver. Use the driver branch recommended for your GPU and restart Windows after installation if requested. If the issue began immediately after a driver update, check the manufacturer’s rollback guidance rather than stacking random driver versions.
  3. Close competing work. In Task Manager, inspect CPU, Memory, Disk, and GPU use while the game is running. Close unnecessary browsers, launchers, recording jobs, cloud-sync tasks, and overlays that are consuming resources; leave security software and essential system processes alone.
  4. Confirm the high-performance GPU. On a laptop or a desktop with more than one graphics adapter, open Settings > System > Display > Graphics, select the game’s executable, choose Options, and verify that the high-performance GPU is selected. The available labels can vary by Windows version and driver.
  5. Check Windows 11 windowed-game optimization. In Settings > System > Display > Graphics, look for Optimizations for windowed games. It applies to compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games in windowed or borderless mode; it is not a universal DirectX 12 fix. Compare the result with the option on and off for the actual title.

Do not assume that a clean desktop guarantees smoothness. An open-world game can still be limited by its CPU simulation, memory capacity, storage streaming, or graphics workload after background tasks are removed.

Which graphics settings should I lower first?

Start with the settings that commonly have a large rendering cost and are less disruptive to image clarity. Intel’s official low-frame-rate guidance summarizes the first move as: “When doing so, try turning down the big three first: shadows, reflections, and lighting.”

Setting group Why it can be expensive Suggested first change Visual trade-off
Shadows Many lights and large outdoor scenes require additional shadow maps and filtering. Drop one quality tier, then repeat the same route. Shadows become softer, lower resolution, shorter range, or less detailed.
Reflections Water, wet roads, glass, and mirrored surfaces can require extra scene rendering or complex ray calculations. Lower reflections before reducing the entire resolution. Surfaces show less accurate or less distant reflected detail.
Lighting Dynamic lights, global illumination, and indirect-light calculations increase GPU work. Reduce lighting quality or disable an optional expensive lighting mode if the game exposes one. Indoor scenes and night lighting may look flatter or less realistic.
Ambient occlusion It adds contact shading around objects, terrain, and corners. Test a lower mode after the big three. Objects may appear less grounded where surfaces meet.
Volumetric lighting or fog Fog, smoke, god rays, and atmospheric volumes cover large parts of the scene. Lower volumetric quality, especially if drops occur in weather, caves, or crowded effects. Light beams and fog gradients become less dense or detailed.
Anti-aliasing Temporal or multisample methods add processing and can affect memory bandwidth. Compare the next lower mode; keep the mode that avoids distracting shimmer. Edges may show more jaggies, shimmer, or ghosting.
Render scale Rendering below native resolution reduces the number of pixels the GPU shades. Lower it in small increments only after testing the discrete settings above. The image becomes softer; thin geometry and distant text suffer first.

Do not change every slider to Low and assume the result is optimal. Lower a single group, replay the same sequence, and restore it if 1% Low FPS and frame pacing do not improve. A setting that is costly in one title may be inexpensive in another, and a patch can change the balance.

How should I use upscaling and render scaling?

Upscaling renders the game at a lower internal resolution and reconstructs an output closer to your display resolution. It can improve GPU-limited performance while preserving more detail than a simple resolution drop, but its quality and available modes depend on the game, GPU, driver, and patch.

  1. Record a native-resolution run first.
  2. Enable an upscaler that the game explicitly supports and choose its quality-oriented mode before trying more aggressive performance modes.
  3. Repeat the same traversal and inspect fine geometry, foliage, distant signs, motion, and transparent effects.
  4. Keep the mode only if the smoother frame delivery is worth the reconstruction artifacts on your display.

Native rendering and supported upscaling are different choices, not universal winners. At a high display resolution, a quality upscaling mode may preserve clarity while reducing GPU work; at a lower resolution, the same mode may look noticeably soft. If the GPU is not the limiting component, upscaling may produce little change.

Are frame generation and low-latency modes the same as upscaling?

No. Upscaling changes how the base frames are rendered, frame generation creates additional displayed frames between rendered frames, and low-latency features target the time between input and presentation. Test them separately and only when the specific game and hardware support them.

  • DLSS Super Resolution: NVIDIA’s reconstruction option, where supported, changes the internal rendering resolution and output reconstruction.
  • DLSS Frame Generation: A separate feature that inserts generated frames. It can make motion appear smoother, but it does not replace the need for adequate base-frame performance and does not reduce co-op network delay.
  • NVIDIA Reflex: A separate latency-control feature available in some games and hardware combinations. Its behavior and availability are title-dependent.
  • AMD FSR: AMD’s upscaling family is also game- and hardware-dependent. Use the implementation exposed by the actual title rather than assuming every FSR mode is available everywhere.
  • AMD Anti-Lag: AMD documents per-game profiles, so configure it for the title instead of applying a blanket assumption. Check the driver’s compatibility notice if Radeon Chill is enabled; the two features have an interoperability restriction in supported configurations.

Do not combine NVIDIA native DLSS Frame Generation with Smooth Motion. If both appear in a driver or game interface, follow the documented compatibility rules and use one frame-generation path at a time. Generated frames can improve perceived motion while leaving input response, CPU simulation, or network responsiveness unchanged, so evaluate base FPS, 1% Low FPS, and control feel separately.

Should I cap FPS or use variable refresh rate?

A frame cap and variable refresh rate (VRR) control presentation, not the game’s underlying workload. Verify the monitor’s configured refresh rate, then compare a stable cap with an uncapped run and test VRR when the display and GPU support it.

Set the display refresh rate correctly

In Windows, open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display and confirm that the intended refresh rate is selected. The game may have a separate refresh-rate selector, and some displays expose additional modes only after the correct cable, input, or driver is in use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compare capped and uncapped presentation

  • An uncapped run shows the maximum the system can deliver, but frame times may vary more and the GPU may run hotter.
  • A stable cap can reduce oscillation and make camera movement feel more consistent when the system can hold that cap.
  • Intel suggests trying a cap just below the display refresh rate as one input-lag comparison; treat it as an experiment, not a universal number.
  • NVIDIA’s Max Frame Rate and G-SYNC controls provide additional cap and VRR choices on compatible hardware. Other GPU and display combinations expose different controls.

V-Sync rules depend on your priority. A setting that minimizes tearing can add latency in one configuration, while a carefully capped VRR setup can prioritize consistent presentation. Compare the options in the actual game and keep the combination that meets your tolerance for tearing, latency, and frame-time variation.

How can I tell co-op network lag from FPS stutter?

If the animation itself hitches, continue local performance diagnosis. If your camera and local movement remain smooth but other players, enemy actions, or online interactions arrive late, investigate the connection separately; a display setting cannot repair a network problem.

What you observe More likely issue Next check
The whole image pauses during a dense scene, then catches up. Local frame-time spike, CPU/GPU limit, memory pressure, or asset streaming. Check 1% Low FPS, GPU and CPU utilization, memory use, and storage activity during the hitch.
Animation is smooth, but another player rubber-bands or actions arrive late. Network delay, packet loss, or a remote-server issue. Compare another session or host, check the game’s connection indicators, and troubleshoot the local network.
Everyone in the session experiences delayed actions. Shared host or server conditions, not a monitor-refresh problem. Check service status and whether the issue follows a particular host or region.

An Ethernet cable can be a sensible local-network troubleshooting step when Wi-Fi interference or signal quality is suspected. It is not an FPS booster, and it cannot fix a remote server, a distant player, or a graphics bottleneck. Do not lower graphics settings to solve a delay that occurs while local rendering remains smooth.

When is a hardware upgrade justified?

Upgrade only after the baseline identifies a bottleneck. Intel’s guidance separates insufficient RAM, an older HDD, GPU or CPU limitations, and display limitations; each calls for a different remedy.

Evidence from your baseline Potential upgrade What it can and cannot solve
The game is installed on an older HDD and hitches while new areas or textures load; disk activity spikes during the hitch. A compatible gaming SSD. May reduce loading-related hitching and shorten load times. It should not be presented as a guaranteed average-FPS increase when the GPU or CPU is the limit.
Memory capacity is insufficient and Windows is heavily paging while the game and co-op tools are open. Compatible RAM with enough capacity for the game and background needs. Can reduce memory pressure. More RAM does not automatically raise FPS when the graphics processor is already limiting performance.
GPU usage is consistently near its limit, lowering resolution or render scale raises FPS, and the CPU has headroom. A compatible desktop GPU or laptop replacement path, if the system permits one. Addresses a graphics bottleneck. Confirm power, case, connector, cooling, and platform compatibility before buying.
One or more CPU threads are saturated while lowering resolution barely changes FPS. A platform-compatible CPU upgrade, where the motherboard and cooling support it. May help simulation and traversal limits, but a CPU upgrade cannot fix a network problem or a slow storage device.
The PC delivers stable frames but the display tears or cannot show the available frame rate. A higher-refresh or VRR monitor compatible with the GPU. Improves presentation of frames the PC can deliver; it does not create additional rendering performance.
Local co-op delay changes with wireless conditions while local FPS stays stable. Ethernet cabling or a better local-network setup. Can improve the local link’s consistency. It does not increase FPS or repair remote-server delay.

Before ordering a part, confirm the exact system model, motherboard or laptop upgrade limits, power supply, physical installation format, and the measured constraint. A storage upgrade is most relevant to an HDD-related loading problem; a GPU, CPU, RAM, monitor, and network accessory each solve different symptoms.

What is a practical tuning order for an open-world co-op game?

Use this order so each change answers a question and can be undone.

  1. Document the baseline: game patch, resolution, refresh rate, GPU, CPU, RAM, drive, average FPS, 1% Low FPS, and the repeatable route.
  2. Apply free maintenance: update the game and driver, close unnecessary tasks, verify the high-performance GPU, and compare Windows 11’s compatible windowed-game optimization when applicable.
  3. Lower the big three: shadows, reflections, and lighting. Re-run the same route after each change.
  4. Test secondary costs: ambient occlusion, volumetric lighting, anti-aliasing, and then render scale if the GPU remains the limit.
  5. Compare supported reconstruction: test native rendering against the game’s available upscaler and quality modes. Inspect image stability, not just the counter.
  6. Test frame generation and latency features independently: verify support, keep adequate base performance, and do not combine incompatible frame-generation paths.
  7. Set presentation deliberately: confirm refresh rate, compare capped and uncapped runs, and test VRR. Record whether tearing, latency, or frame-time consistency matters most to you.
  8. Separate online symptoms: use network troubleshooting for delayed co-op actions and local performance troubleshooting for visible frame hitches.
  9. Upgrade only after diagnosis: match an SSD, RAM, GPU, CPU, monitor, or Ethernet solution to the evidence.

Keep a small change log with the setting, before-and-after average FPS, 1% Low FPS, image-quality notes, and whether the hitch occurred. This prevents a familiar mistake: keeping a visually damaging setting change that did not improve the actual problem.

Why can a universal preset not be published for this title?

The title does not identify a particular game, patch, GPU, CPU, resolution, or monitor. Feature names, quality tiers, upscaler support, frame-generation support, and performance costs vary by those factors, so a mandatory numeric slider list would be misleading.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a title-specific settings table, collect the exact game and patch, operating system, GPU and driver, CPU, RAM capacity, storage drive, display resolution and refresh rate, selected graphics API if the game offers one, and a description of whether the symptom is a local hitch, a sustained low frame rate, tearing, or online delay. Include average and 1% Low observations from the same repeatable scene. Those details allow a recommendation to distinguish a graphics bottleneck from CPU simulation, memory pressure, storage streaming, display timing, or network latency.

What is the bottom-line method?

Measure first, make reversible changes, and change one variable at a time. Lower shadows, reflections, and lighting before sacrificing resolution; then test the remaining costly effects and supported reconstruction features. Treat generated frames, low-latency controls, frame caps, VRR, Ethernet, and hardware purchases as separate tools for separate problems. The smoothest result is the configuration that delivers consistent frame times and acceptable image quality on your particular game and system, not the preset with the lowest-looking numbers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will lowering resolution fix every FPS drop?

No. Lowering resolution mainly helps when the GPU is the limiting component; it may do little when a CPU thread, memory shortage, storage stream, or network condition is responsible. If the frame rate barely changes after a large resolution reduction, investigate CPU, RAM, disk activity, and background processes instead.

Should I cap FPS in the game or in the graphics driver?

Use the in-game limiter when it offers a reliable cap and the driver limiter when the title lacks one or its limiter behaves poorly. Compare both with the same cap because queueing and frame-time behavior can differ by game and driver. Keep the option that produces the steadier 1% Low result and preferred input feel.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can borderless mode perform differently from fullscreen?

Yes, behavior varies by title, Windows version, graphics API, and driver. On Windows 11, Optimizations for windowed games targets compatible DirectX 10 and 11 titles in windowed or borderless mode, so compare modes rather than assuming borderless is always slower or faster.

How do I check whether RAM is causing the stutter?

Open Task Manager while reproducing the hitch and watch Memory usage, committed memory, and disk activity. If memory pressure rises and the system begins paging while the GPU is not fully occupied, insufficient capacity or a competing task may be contributing. Confirm the pattern across the same route before buying additional RAM.
