Fix the symptom in the right order: identify whether a pre-rendered scene is skipped or black, whether video plays without sound, or whether captions or a spoken-language track is unavailable. First run Steam’s file-integrity check. Then use the platform-specific branch: Windows N editions may need Microsoft’s Media Feature Pack for video, Steam Deck and desktop Linux need Proton and system-update checks, and silent Windows game audio often comes from per-app output routing. Subtitle and language availability is a game feature, not something Steam’s streaming-video controls can add.
Valve’s Proton checklist calls this class of failure “missing cinematics/cutscenes,” while Capcom describes related “video playback issues during cutscenes.” Microsoft documents the separate symptom “app audio not working while system sounds work in Windows.” Those descriptions point to different checks, so a codec change is not a universal answer.
What exactly is missing in the FMV scene?
Before changing settings, write down the smallest reproducible failure. FMV (full-motion video) is usually a pre-rendered movie played by the game rather than real-time graphics. A game can therefore have working menus and gameplay while one movie file, one decoder path, one audio route, or one language asset fails.
- Skipped or black scene: the game advances past a movie, shows a black frame, freezes, or returns to gameplay.
- Video with no sound: the movie is visible, but its dialogue, music, or effects are silent.
- Missing spoken dialogue: other game audio works, but a particular language track is absent.
- Missing subtitles: speech plays, but captions do not appear or the requested language is unavailable.
- System-wide audio failure: Windows itself is also silent; this is broader than an FMV problem.
Also note whether the failure affects one scene or every movie, whether normal gameplay has sound, your operating system and edition, the game title, and the exact scene. This separation prevents treating a file problem, a media-framework problem, an audio-routing problem, and an unavailable language as the same fault.

| Video visible but game audio silent on Windows | Game audio options and Windows Volume mixer | Can reveal mute, volume, or wrong-output routing; it does not repair missing video |
| Video visible but audio silent on Proton | Check other game sound, then review Proton compatibility | Separates an audio-path symptom from missing cinematics; the cause can differ by game |
| Captions or language track absent | Check the game’s Steam language table and in-game language controls | Shows whether the publisher advertises that asset; a setting cannot create an unlisted track |
How do I verify the Steam installation?
Run Steam’s integrity check before installing codecs, replacing files, or changing compatibility settings. Valve says the process checks that installed game files are present and correct; it can take several minutes. A successful check means the installation matches Steam’s available files, not that Windows or Proton can decode every movie format.
- Open Steam Library.
- Right-click the affected game, or select its gear icon.
- Choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files and wait for Steam to finish.
- Launch the game and reproduce the same scene once.
Use Valve’s instructions at Steam Support: Verify Integrity of Game Files if your client uses slightly different labels. If Steam reacquires files and the same scene still fails, record that result and move to the Windows or Steam Deck/Linux branch. Repeating verification cannot supply an excluded Windows media component or fix a wrong audio output.
How do I fix a skipped or black FMV on Windows?
On Windows, first determine whether you are running a standard edition or an N edition. Some games rely on Windows media codecs for cutscenes; Microsoft says N editions omit certain media technologies. Capcom’s Steam troubleshooting guidance likewise notes that some cutscenes depend on Windows media codecs.

Open Settings → System → About and read the Windows edition. Do not install the Media Feature Pack simply because a cutscene is black on a standard edition, and do not treat a third-party codec pack as an established cross-game fix.
Install Media Feature Pack on Windows 11 N
For Windows 11 N, Microsoft’s documented route is:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps → Optional features.
- Choose View features next to “Add an optional feature.”
- Search for Media Feature Pack, select it, and choose Next → Install.
- Restart Windows when installation completes, then launch the game and revisit the affected scene.
The pack addresses media technologies omitted from the N edition; it does not repair a missing game file, add subtitles that the publisher did not ship, or guarantee compatibility for every movie format. Microsoft can change Settings labels between Windows releases, so search Optional features if the wording differs.

If the game still skips the scene
Confirm that Steam verification completed, restart the computer, and check the game’s own display or movie options if it provides them. Keep the game title, scene name, Windows edition, and exact behavior for support. Capcom requests system information, reproduction circumstances, and screenshots or video when its general Steam steps do not resolve “video playback issues during cutscenes”; its guidance is available at Capcom’s Steam-games troubleshooting article.
How do I fix black or skipped movies on Steam Deck or desktop Linux?
Linux playback uses Proton and the game’s compatibility path, so Windows codec advice is not interchangeable with Proton troubleshooting. Valve’s checklist says “Problems with missing cinematics/cutscenes are most likely due to Media Foundation, Quartz or WMVcore issues.” That is a diagnostic classification, not proof that every game needs the same component.
- Install all available SteamOS or distribution updates.
- Restart the Deck or Linux computer.
- Open the affected game’s Properties → Compatibility.
- Enable the option to force a compatibility tool if it is not already enabled.
- Try the latest Proton version offered by your installation, then launch the game and reproduce the same scene.
Valve documents the compatibility-tool route in Steam Support’s Proton troubleshooting guidance. Available versions and labels can differ between SteamOS and desktop distributions. Do not prescribe an old Proton build, a downloaded DLL, or a manual media-framework replacement for every title: the checklist names likely areas and example log signatures, but it does not establish a single universal remedy.
Separate movie failure from a wider Proton failure
Note whether menus, gameplay graphics, and ordinary game audio work. If only one pre-rendered scene fails, the problem is narrower than a game that cannot start or render at all. If changing Proton versions alters the symptom, include both versions in a support report rather than assuming the newest version is permanently required.
Why does the FMV have picture but no sound on Windows?
When the movie displays correctly, check the game’s own audio settings and then Windows per-app routing. Microsoft states that “Apps can use a different output device than the system default,” so a game can be silent while notification sounds or a browser remain audible.
- Open the game’s Options, Audio, or Sound menu. Confirm master volume, movie/dialogue volume, and mute settings are enabled where those controls exist.
- With the game running, open Settings → System → Sound → Volume mixer.
- Under the app list, find the game. Make sure its volume is above zero and it is not muted.
- Check the game’s assigned Output device. Select the speakers or headphones you are actually using instead of an unavailable monitor, controller, or virtual device.
- Replay the same scene. If the entire computer is silent, follow Microsoft’s broader output-device and connection checks rather than treating this as an FMV-only fault.
Microsoft’s app-specific instructions are at Fix app audio not working while system sounds work in Windows. Its general sound guidance is at Fix sound or audio problems in Windows. These checks address mute, volume, and routing; they cannot restore a movie that never renders or a language track the game does not include.

What should I check when FMV audio is missing on Proton?
First determine whether ordinary gameplay sound works. If menus and gameplay are also silent, investigate the game’s general audio path; if only the movie’s dialogue or soundtrack is absent, keep the scene-specific symptom in your report.
- Review the game’s audio and language options.
- Confirm whether non-FMV sound plays through the same device.
- Install updates and restart, then try the latest available Proton as described in the Linux video branch.
- Record the Proton version, output device, scene, and whether the picture is present.
Valve’s Proton checklist separately identifies XAudio2 signatures for audio problems. That means silent FMV should not automatically be blamed on Media Foundation, Quartz, or WMVcore; video and audio can fail in different layers. The Proton support path is documented at Steam Support.
How do I restore missing subtitles or a spoken-language track?
Start by checking whether the publisher advertises the requested language and feature. Steam separates Interface, Full Audio, and Subtitles in a game’s store-page language table. A language can be listed for menus but not for spoken dialogue, or for subtitles but not full audio.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open the game’s Steam store page.
- Find the Languages table.
- Check the requested language under the specific Interface, Full Audio, and Subtitles columns.
- If the feature is listed, open the game’s own language, caption, and audio settings and select it there. Some games apply the change only after restarting.
- If the feature is not listed, contact the publisher for confirmation; changing Steam’s client language cannot create an unadvertised in-game track.
Valve explains these store-page language categories in its localization documentation: Localizing Your Game’s Presence on Steam. The table describes advertised availability, not a guarantee that every release, scene, or platform implements the feature identically.
Are Steam streaming subtitles the same as in-game FMV subtitles?
No. Steam’s streaming-video player has its own closed-caption and alternate-track controls. Those controls apply to videos played by Steam’s streaming player, not automatically to a movie embedded in a game.
If you are watching a Steam-streamed video, use its player controls and follow Steam’s streaming-video help. If the missing captions occur during gameplay, use the game’s language settings and Steam store-page language table instead. Changing the streaming player’s CC button will not install an in-game subtitle file.

What should I include when a Steam FMV problem persists?
A precise report gives support a way to distinguish a missing asset from a platform or routing failure. Include:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Exact game title and, if relevant, edition or downloadable content.
- Windows edition and version, SteamOS or Linux distribution, or Steam Deck model.
- The scene name or the point in the story where the failure occurs.
- Whether the scene is skipped, black, frozen, silent, missing dialogue, or missing captions.
- Whether normal gameplay picture and sound work.
- Your selected speakers, headphones, monitor, or other output device when audio is affected.
- The date and result of Steam’s integrity check.
- Proton version and compatibility settings tried on Linux.
- Screenshot or short video showing the failure, if possible.
Do not send a generic statement such as “cutscenes do not work.” Capcom’s support guidance specifically asks for system information, reproduction circumstances, and screenshots or video when broad steps fail. Valve’s Proton checklist also uses concrete symptoms and log signatures to classify missing cinematics and audio issues. Keep the report limited to the affected game and scene so the developer can reproduce the same path.
Which fixes are commonly confused with one another?
These remedies target different layers and should not be presented as interchangeable:
| Action | Layer addressed | When it is appropriate | What it will not do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Steam file verification | Installed game content | A movie file may be missing or damaged | Install Windows N media components or alter Proton compatibility |
| Media Feature Pack | Windows N media technologies | The PC is confirmed to be a Windows N edition and a game needs omitted media components | Fix standard Windows automatically, restore subtitles, or repair a bad game file |
| Latest available Proton | Linux/Steam Deck compatibility layer | Movies fail under Proton after updates and restarts | Guarantee one decoder for all games or add an unshipped language track |
| Windows Volume mixer | Per-app audio routing | Video works, other system sound works, and the game is muted or routed to another device | Repair black video or missing captions |
| Steam store language table | Advertised content availability | You need to know whether full audio or subtitles exist in a language | Install an absent track |
What should I avoid when troubleshooting?
- Do not install random codec packs first. The supported path depends on the operating system and game; a third-party pack is not an established universal fix.
- Do not repeatedly verify files after a clean result. Verification tests installation content, not every decoder, compatibility layer, or output route.
- Do not download replacement DLLs for every Proton game. Valve’s checklist identifies possible framework areas, not a one-size-fits-all file substitution.
- Do not assume a subtitle toggle exists in every title. Use the game’s own controls and the store-page language categories.
- Do not buy headphones to fix missing video or captions. Use speakers or headphones you already own to test output routing; hardware cannot create a movie or subtitle asset.
- Do not treat streaming-video controls as game controls. The Steam streaming player and an in-game FMV renderer are separate.
If the game remains broken after the branch that matches your platform and symptom, the most useful next step is a detailed developer or publisher report, not an unrelated repair utility.
Frequently asked questions
Why does only one cutscene fail while every other movie works?
A single scene may reference a distinct movie file, audio stream, or subtitle asset. Record that scene’s exact location and compare it with a working scene; the contrast gives support a narrower reproduction case than reporting that all FMV is broken.
Can changing Steam’s client language add missing dialogue?
No. The client-language setting does not create audio assets. Check the game’s store-page language table and its own language menu to determine whether full audio in that language is advertised and selectable.

Will headphones fix a silent FMV?
They can help identify whether the game is routed to the wrong output device if you already have a compatible pair. They cannot fix a missing media framework, skipped video, or absent subtitle track.
Is a black cutscene proof that my graphics driver is broken?
No. A black or skipped movie can come from game files, Windows N media components, or Proton media-framework compatibility. Because normal real-time gameplay and pre-rendered video use different paths, the symptom alone does not identify the graphics driver as the cause.
What if Steam says the files are valid but the problem remains?
Treat that as evidence that the installed files match Steam’s available files, not as proof that playback dependencies are healthy. Continue with the platform-specific media or audio branch and include the successful verification result in your support report.
