If a multiline React Native TextInput clips a newly wrapped line after you insert text in code, the text engine is usually working. The native text view has stale intrinsic dimensions. After React commits the new content, nudge the native view by writing a collapsed selection inside requestAnimationFrame:

requestAnimationFrame(() => inputRef.current?.setNativeProps({ selection: { start: end, end } }));

This recalculates the caret position and intrinsic size without remounting the input, dropping focus, or flashing the keyboard.

What the bug looks like

The failure is specific to a common sequence:

  1. The input is configured for multiple lines.
  2. Your code inserts or replaces text (for example, when expanding a mention or applying an attributed-text change).
  3. The new text is long enough to cross the available width.
  4. The second line exists internally but is clipped by a container that still has one-line dimensions.
  5. A normal keystroke finally causes the wrapped line to appear.

Selection still works, “select all” includes the hidden characters, and the caret can be moved to the expected position. Those observations indicate that wrapping was computed; the stale part is the native view’s measured size and layout pass. As Dheeraj Akula describes the symptom, the text remains present while “the container is still sized for one line even though there are now two lines of text in it.”

The one-line repair

Run this immediately after the programmatic update, using the length of the final plain-text value:

requestAnimationFrame(() => inputRef.current?.setNativeProps({ selection: { start: end, end } }));

requestAnimationFrame waits until React has committed the children or attributed-text change. The collapsed selection then tells the native text view where the caret belongs. Resolving that caret’s glyph coordinates causes iOS to perform the layout work that updates intrinsic content size.

The range must be collapsed: start and end are the same index. A non-collapsed range would select text rather than simply place the insertion point. Calculate end from the post-insert string, not from the value that existed before the update.

Why this does not flicker

setNativeProps changes the existing native view. It does not destroy the responder, so the keyboard and focus remain in place. By contrast, changing a component key forces React Native to tear down and recreate the native input; that can dismiss the keyboard for a frame and reset other native state.

A complete React Native pattern

The following example shows the order that matters: produce the new text, store that exact text, commit it through your existing state or children path, then schedule the native selection write.

import React, { useRef, useState } from 'react';
import { TextInput } from 'react-native';

export function MentionInput() {
  const inputRef = useRef<TextInput>(null);
  const mentionStateRef = useRef({ plainText: '' });
  const [text, setText] = useState('');

  function insertText(nextText: string) {
    mentionStateRef.current.plainText = nextText;
    setText(nextText);

    const end = mentionStateRef.current.plainText.length;
    requestAnimationFrame(() => {
      inputRef.current?.setNativeProps({
        selection: { start: end, end },
      });
    });
  }

  return (

        mentionStateRef.current.plainText = nextText;
        setText(nextText);
      }}
    />
  );
}

Your editor may use children, an attributed-text bridge, or another state model instead of value. Keep that model; the important part is that the selection update runs after the content update has been committed. If your insertion is asynchronous, calculate the length only after the final text is known.

Check the basic iOS configuration first

Enable multiline mode

React Native’s multiline prop defaults to false. Set multiline={true}; otherwise the control is intentionally a single-line field and no layout nudge can turn it into a multiline editor.

Keep the intended line-break policy

On iOS, lineBreakModeIOS supports wordWrapping, char, clip, head, middle, and tail. The documented default is wordWrapping. Unless your product specifically needs character-by-character wrapping or clipping, leave it at wordWrapping. Choosing clip, for example, can make a correctly measured line look truncated by design.

Understand the native control

React Native’s iOS multiline input is backed by Apple’s UITextView, which Apple defines as “A scrollable, multiline text region.” The text view can therefore contain all of the characters while its current frame or intrinsic-content calculation is temporarily behind the content.

Do not treat numberOfLines as the repair

numberOfLines on iOS is documented as available only with React Native’s New Architecture. It is a maximum-line setting, not an invalidation mechanism for a stale layout pass. Adding it will not correct the programmatic-update gap described here.

When the symptom applies—and when it may not

Programmatic children or attributed-text updates

The reported gap occurs when code changes children or attributed text and the new content crosses the right edge before native intrinsic sizing catches up. The selection nudge is targeted at that sequence.

A controlled value update

If your input is controlled with value, first verify that the ordinary value-update path is healthy. Confirm that the rendered value contains the inserted characters and that onContentSizeChange fires when the text grows. A value-controlled input may not have the exact children-update gap; applying the nudge blindly can hide a separate state or sizing problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Other causes of clipping

If the line remains clipped after the nudge, inspect the surrounding layout. A parent with a fixed height, an explicit one-line style, an overlay, or a scroll container that never receives the new height can produce the same visual result. The native selection write cannot override a deliberate constraint imposed by an ancestor.

Use onContentSizeChange when the component must grow

React Native exposes onContentSizeChange for multiline inputs. It reports an object containing width and height whenever the content size changes. Use it when your design expands the input as the user types or as code inserts text.

const [contentHeight, setContentHeight] = useState(0);

<TextInput
  multiline={true}
  onContentSizeChange={({ nativeEvent: { contentSize } }) => {
    setContentHeight(contentSize.height);
  }}
  style={{ height: Math.max(minHeight, contentHeight) }}
/>

Measure the content in the callback and apply the height through your layout state. Do not use a fixed one-line height while expecting intrinsic growth. The selection nudge addresses a missed native layout pass; onContentSizeChange handles the separate job of feeding the measured height into your component’s style.

How the fixes compare

Older workarounds can make the line visible, but they differ in focus behavior and in what actually triggers layout.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Approach Remounts native view? Preserves keyboard focus? Runs after React commit? Triggers intrinsic-size work? Best fit
requestAnimationFrame plus collapsed selection No Yes Yes Yes, through caret-coordinate resolution Programmatic children or attributed-text updates
Change the component key Yes No guarantee; keyboard can flicker Implicitly, through recreation Yes, because a new view is created Last-resort reset when native state is irrecoverably corrupt
Toggle scrollEnabled No Usually Not necessarily May provoke a layout pass, but indirectly Legacy workaround when a platform quirk is confirmed
alignSelf: 'flex-start' No Yes No Changes flex layout rather than invalidating text measurement Cases caused by a flex alignment constraint
blur() followed by focus() No Temporarily lost Not reliably Can force native work as a side effect Diagnostic experiment, not a preferred repair

The selection update is the smallest intervention because it keeps the existing responder and explicitly runs after the content commit. Remounting, focus cycling, and scroll toggles can conceal the symptom while introducing keyboard movement or unrelated state changes.

Implementation checklist

  1. Confirm that the input has multiline={true}.
  2. Confirm that the inserted string really exceeds the available width and that its characters are present in state or children.
  3. Keep lineBreakModeIOS="wordWrapping" unless another policy is intentional.
  4. Store the post-insert plain text before calculating the caret index.
  5. Schedule the native update with requestAnimationFrame, not in the same synchronous call that changes React content.
  6. Write a collapsed range: { start: end, end }.
  7. Use an optional ref call so the code remains safe while the input is unmounted or not yet attached.
  8. If the component grows vertically, listen to onContentSizeChange and apply the reported height.
  9. Inspect parent height and overflow constraints if the line is still hidden.
  10. Test the controlled value path separately from children or attributed-text updates.

Diagnosing a failed fix

The caret jumps to the wrong place

The index is calculated from the wrong string. Compute it from the final plain-text value after insertion, and ensure the same text is what the native input receives.

The keyboard still disappears

Look for a changing key, conditional rendering, navigation transition, or an explicit blur. The selection nudge itself updates the current native view and should not require any of those operations.

The callback never runs

Check that inputRef points to the mounted TextInput and that the callback is scheduled after the state or children update. A ref that is null during the frame cannot send a native property write.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The line appears but the field does not grow

That is a height-management issue rather than a wrapping issue. Verify that the multiline input emits onContentSizeChange, then apply the reported content height within the parent’s layout constraints.

Only some strings fail

Reproduce with text that crosses the right edge immediately after a programmatic change. If ordinary typing always works while insertion fails, the stale-layout diagnosis is a strong match. If typing also clips, investigate fixed dimensions, font metrics, padding, and parent constraints instead of relying solely on the selection nudge.

Testing without remounts

Exercise the exact transition that caused the bug:

  • Start with one visual line and insert enough text to require two.
  • Repeat the insertion while the keyboard is visible.
  • Verify that the caret remains at the end and that selection handles still operate.
  • Confirm that the hidden characters are included in a select-all operation before and after the fix.
  • Insert text repeatedly so the field crosses several additional line boundaries.
  • Test deletion back to one line and insertion again.
  • Run the same cases with the input initially unfocused and with it already focused.

These checks distinguish a layout invalidation problem from data loss, an incorrect selection index, or a parent that is refusing to resize. The expected result is that the wrapped line becomes visible on the frame after the committed update, with no keyboard dismissal.

Practical decision rule

Use the requestAnimationFrame and collapsed-selection nudge when all of the following are true: the input is multiline, the content changes programmatically, the newly wrapped line is clipped until a keystroke, and the native text still contains the missing characters. Use onContentSizeChange when your component must change its height. Choose a remount, focus cycle, or scroll toggle only when you have identified a separate native or layout defect that those operations specifically address.
