You do not need a new graphics card to use FSR 4.1 upscaling on a Radeon RX 6000. AMD added RX 6000 support in the Adrenalin 26.10.1 release notes updated October 20, 2026, and the October 28, 2026 FSR SDK 2.4 release identifies the implementation as Upscaling 4.1.2 for discrete RX 6000 GPUs. The commonly displayed feature name “FSR 4” may therefore refer to the 4.1 family. If the option is missing, the usual cause is that the game has no compatible integration, uses a renderer with different upgrade rules, or is running an unsuitable driver. Blurry output usually comes from the selected input-resolution preset or game-side motion-vector and mipmap issues. Crashes require a controlled comparison with overlays and frame generation separated from upscaling.
This guide covers the exact checks for an RX 6600, 6500, 6400, 6700, 6800, or 6900 desktop card, plus the different driver considerations for laptops and handhelds.
What exactly works on Radeon RX 6000?
FSR Upscaling 4.1 is the machine-learning upscaler supported on discrete Radeon RX 6000, RX 7000, and RX 9000 hardware in AMD’s current SDK. AMD’s 26.10.1 Windows driver notes specifically list the RX 6000 family, while SDK 2.4 labels the newer implementation 4.1.2. “4.1” is the feature family users see in discussions and game menus; “4.1.2” is the SDK revision, not a competing technology. See AMD’s 26.10.1 release notes and the FSR SDK documentation.
| Feature | RX 6000 status | What the game still needs |
|---|---|---|
| FSR Upscaling 4.1/4.1.2 | Supported on discrete RX 6000 with the appropriate software path | A native integration or an eligible existing FSR 3.1 integration |
| FSR Frame Generation 4.0.2 (ML) | Requires RX 9000 or newer | A game integration that exposes the feature; other eligible hardware may use an analytical fallback |
| Radeon Super Resolution | Separate driver-level spatial upscaling feature | A supported fullscreen game and driver settings; it is not the game’s FSR integration |
That distinction explains why an RX 6000 can receive FSR 4.1 image upscaling without receiving the RX 9000-only machine-learning frame-generation implementation. AMD’s product explanation is available on the FidelityFX Super Resolution page.

Why is FSR 4.1 missing or greyed out on my RX 6700 XT?
The driver does not install a universal FSR menu into every game. The game must contain an appropriate integration, and the renderer and integration version determine whether AMD can provide a newer upscaler.
Check the exact GPU and driver first
AMD’s 26.10.1 compatibility list includes the RX 6900, 6800, 6700, 6600, 6500, and 6400 desktop families. Confirm the model in AMD Software or Windows Device Manager, then record the installed Adrenalin version. Download the current package through AMD’s official selector or installer rather than looking for a separate “FSR 4.1 driver”; there is no standalone game-side FSR download.
Laptop owners should treat AMD’s package as a reference driver. AMD notes that system-vendor support is limited and recommends the laptop manufacturer’s driver if the reference package causes problems. Handhelds likewise require the device maker’s customized driver. A desktop RX 6700 XT driver cannot be assumed to be suitable for a laptop or handheld GPU.

Confirm that this particular game integrates FSR
AMD says its product page covers more than 400 supported titles, but that aggregate does not prove that your game, build, or renderer has an eligible integration. Check the game’s current patch notes or graphics menu. A native ML integration may call the option FSR 4, while another game may retain an FSR 3.1 label and obtain a newer upscaler through AMD Software.
Use the correct menu path for an eligible FSR 3.1 game
- Close the game completely.
- Open AMD Software → Gaming → Graphics.
- Enable AMD FSR Upscaling if that option is available for the installed driver and game.
- Launch the game and enable its own FSR setting.
- Select the desired quality preset and restart the game if its menu requests a restart.
AMD’s generic instructions may also show an FSR Frame Generation toggle. Do not interpret that toggle as proof that an RX 6000 has the ML frame-generation implementation; user-facing labels vary by game, driver, and hardware. Leave frame generation off while diagnosing missing upscaling so the two paths are not confused.

How do DX12 and Vulkan change the upgrade path?
API behavior is a major reason two games on the same RX 6000 card can expose different FSR versions. A driver update can supply a newer upscaler only where the application’s integration permits it.
DirectX 12
A supported DX12 game with an existing eligible FSR 3.1 integration can receive the ML upscaler through AMD’s driver-provided version selection. If the application pins a specific effect version, it opts out of that selection and remains on the version chosen by its developer. A driver cannot add FSR to a game that supplied no FSR integration.

AMD documents a different rule for Vulkan: an existing Vulkan FSR 3.1 game is not automatically upgraded through the driver. The developer must ship an integration using the newer SDK. Therefore, repeatedly reinstalling the driver will not make a Vulkan title gain FSR 4.1 if its game build has not been updated.
These DX12 and Vulkan rules are described in AMD’s FSR SDK guidance. When reporting a missing option, include the renderer shown by the game, its exact build, and whether the option is native, driver-provided, or absent entirely.
How do I fix FSR 4.1 when the picture looks blurry?
First compare the same scene at the game’s Quality or Native AA setting. FSR can be functioning correctly while a low-input-resolution preset removes detail, and a game with incorrect integration data can remain soft even at Quality.

Choose a sensible input-resolution mode
| Mode | Approximate input resolution per dimension | Typical consequence |
|---|---|---|
| Native AA | 100% of output resolution | Highest input detail; primarily an anti-aliasing/upscaling path rather than a large performance reduction |
| Quality | About 67% | Good starting point when preserving fine detail matters |
| Performance | About 50% | More speed, but visibly less source detail |
| Ultra Performance (when offered) | About 33% | Designed for very high output resolutions; often too soft at ordinary 1080p use |
These percentages describe each dimension, so the rendered pixel count falls more sharply than the percentage alone suggests. Compare Quality and Native AA before judging the upscaler. If the game offers a sharpening control, increase it conservatively; AMD describes sharpening as an optional pass, not a repair for missing source detail. The mode and sharpening descriptions are documented in AMD’s FSR upscaling overview.
Prefer game-integrated FSR over Radeon Super Resolution
Radeon Super Resolution is a separate driver feature. Running it together with a game’s FSR can create a second scaling stage and a softer image. Disable the driver-level scaler when the game already provides FSR, set the game to the desired output resolution, and let one upscaler handle the workload.
Recognize game-side integration problems
AMD’s developer documentation identifies motion vectors, camera jitter, mipmap bias, and color-space handling as image-quality-sensitive inputs. If several games look clear at Quality but one title remains blurry, the likely issue is that game’s integration or patch rather than RX 6000 eligibility. Capture the game name, patch number, renderer, preset, output resolution, and a screenshot of the same scene before contacting the developer.
What should I do if enabling FSR causes a crash, hang, or driver timeout?
Do not change every graphics option at once. Establish whether the failure belongs to upscaling, frame generation, an overlay, or the driver installation.
- Record the game build, renderer (DX12 or Vulkan), GPU model, Adrenalin version, and the exact location or action that reproduces the failure.
- Use the same save, scene, resolution, and quality settings with FSR disabled. Note whether the game reaches the same point.
- Enable FSR upscaling alone. Keep frame generation, optional sharpening changes, recording tools, and third-party overlays disabled for this comparison.
- Re-enable one additional feature at a time. This identifies whether the crash follows frame generation or an overlay rather than FSR upscaling.
- Temporarily disable AMD’s Performance Metrics Overlay. AMD’s 26.10.1 notes document an intermittent game crash or driver timeout when other overlays are opened or closed while that overlay is active. This is a documented check, not proof that the overlay caused your particular crash.
- If installation files appear damaged, rerun AMD’s official installer. For a clean rollback or reinstall, AMD Cleanup Utility is the vendor’s specialized option; follow AMD’s recommendation to use Safe Mode, then reboot after cleanup before installing the intended driver.
The same release notes list crashes affecting other GPU families and games. Do not apply those entries to an RX 6000 title unless AMD identifies your model and software path. If the problem persists, provide the reproducible steps and logs to the game developer or AMD support instead of assuming that every timeout is an FSR defect.

What should I not confuse with FSR 4.1 upscaling?
- FSR upscaling versus frame generation: Upscaling reconstructs a higher-resolution image from a lower-resolution input. ML FSR Frame Generation 4.0.2 is a separate feature requiring RX 9000 or later; eligible older hardware may expose an analytical fallback instead.
- FSR versus Radeon Super Resolution: FSR is normally integrated by the game. RSR is a driver-level option and should not be stacked on top of in-game FSR.
- FSR 4.1 versus every “Redstone” feature: Marketing families can contain multiple techniques with different hardware requirements. Confirm whether a menu item is specifically upscaling or frame generation.
- Driver availability versus game availability: Having Adrenalin 26.10.1 does not create an integration in a title that never shipped one.
Are AMD’s published timings a promise of higher game FPS?
No. AMD GPUOpen publishes reference effect timings, not whole-game frame rates. The following figures are FSR Performance-mode processing times with RCAS sharpening disabled and peak GPU clocks:
| GPU and output | Published FSR effect timing |
|---|---|
| RX 6600 at 1080p | 2,183 microseconds |
| RX 6700 XT at 1440p | 2,460 microseconds |
| RX 6900 XT at 4K | 3,190 microseconds |
These are AMD GPUOpen reference measurements, not a guarantee for your game, clock behavior, driver, or complete frame time. AMD also publishes approximate FSR upscaling working-set figures of 81 MB at 1080p and 318 MB at 4K, rounded using an RX 9070 XT. They are not RX 6000 board-memory requirements and should not be used as a crash fix. See the ML super-resolution technical manual for the technical context.
Why do AMD pages appear to disagree about RX 6000 support?
One “Limitations” sentence near the bottom of AMD’s FSR 4.1.2 developer manual still says RX 7000 or RX 9000 is required. That sentence conflicts with the manual’s newer RX 6000 timing material, the SDK 2.4 announcement, and the dated 26.10.1 driver notes. For current RX 6000 eligibility, use the specific, newer release statements that explicitly name discrete RX 6000 support rather than silently treating the stale sentence as the final rule.
Because drivers and game integrations change, recheck the current release notes and the individual game’s support information when diagnosing a new title. AMD’s October 2026 announcement says gamers can “get more from the hardware they already own”; that is a statement about enabling the feature on existing hardware, not a measured frame-rate claim.
When is replacing an RX 6000 card justified?
Buying a new card is not a requirement for FSR 4.1 upscaling. Consider replacing an RX 6000 only when you have independently diagnosed a hardware fault, insufficient performance for a game even with appropriate settings, or a specific need for RX 9000-only ML frame generation. An RX 9070 XT can be relevant to that separate frame-generation goal, but it is not a remedy for a missing game integration, a low-resolution preset, incorrect motion vectors, or an overlay crash.

RX 6000 FSR troubleshooting checklist
- Confirm the exact desktop GPU model and Adrenalin version.
- Use the OEM driver on a laptop or handheld when the vendor requires it.
- Check whether the game has native FSR 4/4.1, an eligible FSR 3.1 integration, or no supported integration.
- Identify DX12 versus Vulkan before expecting a driver upgrade.
- For softness, compare Native AA and Quality at the same output resolution before changing sharpening.
- Disable Radeon Super Resolution when using in-game FSR.
- For crashes, compare FSR off/on in the same scene and isolate frame generation and overlays.
- Temporarily disable Performance Metrics Overlay if other overlays trigger a documented timeout pattern.
- Collect the game build, renderer, GPU, driver, overlay state, and reproduction steps for unresolved cases.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can an RX 6600 use FSR 4.1 at 4K output?
The upscaler can run on the supported RX 6000 hardware, but 4K output does not guarantee a desirable frame rate or image. AMD’s published RX 6600 timing is a 1080p reference in Performance mode, so it should not be extrapolated into a 4K whole-game result.
Will reinstalling a game add an FSR 4.1 option?
No. Reinstallation can repair corrupted game files, but it cannot add an FSR integration that the developer never shipped. Check the game’s patch history and renderer support instead.
Is the FSR 4 label in a menu always the same as SDK 4.1.2?
Not necessarily. Developers may expose a broad FSR 4 label while integrating a particular SDK revision, and AMD’s driver path can provide version selection only for eligible integrations. The game’s build notes and renderer determine what is actually available.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What information should I include in an AMD or game-support report?
Include the exact GPU, driver version, game build, DX12 or Vulkan renderer, output resolution, FSR preset, frame-generation state, overlay state, and a repeatable sequence that causes the problem. A screenshot or log from the same scene with FSR disabled and enabled makes the comparison useful.
Can sharpening restore detail lost by Ultra Performance mode?
Sharpening can increase edge contrast but cannot recreate texture detail that was never present in the low-resolution input. Switch to Quality or Native AA first, then adjust sharpening moderately if the game provides that control.
