If ElevenLabs audio is not playing in Electron, first determine whether the app received complete, valid audio bytes; then check whether Chromium can play them and whether Electron’s autoplay policy allows playback. A successful generation request does not prove that the renderer received a playable resource, and a valid resource does not guarantee that play() will be permitted without user activation.

1. Separate audio delivery from playback

Log the ElevenLabs request independently from renderer playback. Record the request outcome, response metadata, and whether the response completed; then verify that the returned content is actually audio in the format your playback path expects. An HTTP success alone does not establish that the response is complete or playable.

For documented supported endpoints, ElevenLabs describes streaming as raw audio bytes delivered using chunked transfer encoding. Your app therefore needs to consume the response as a stream or byte sequence and pass it to a playback mechanism that supports the chosen encoding and buffering strategy. Treating an in-progress stream as if it were already a complete media URL, or assigning an incompatible object to an audio element, can break the handoff. These are integration checks based on the documented response shape, not a claim that a particular bug is present. See ElevenLabs’ streaming documentation for the endpoint-specific response details.

2. Capture the renderer’s playback result

When playback uses an HTMLMediaElement, handle the promise from play() and inspect the element’s error state. The promise resolves when playback begins and rejects when playback cannot start. In particular, NotAllowedError points toward autoplay or user-activation policy; other failures may indicate a loading, decoding, or playback problem.

  if (error?.name === 'NotAllowedError') {
    // Show a Play button and retry from its click handler.
  } else {
    // Report a media loading, decoding, or playback problem.
  }
}

Do not silently swallow the rejection. Give the user a visible Play action and make the retry happen directly in its click or keyboard handler. A script-triggered play() call outside user input is still autoplay behavior, even if your app made the call after an earlier generation or network operation. MDN’s autoplay guide describes the rejection and recommends offering manual playback when autoplay is blocked.

3. Check Electron’s autoplay policy

Inspect webPreferences.autoplayPolicy in the BrowserWindow configuration and compare it with the app’s intended interaction. Electron’s latest API documentation lists these values:

Policy value Gesture requirement Practical consideration
no-user-gesture-required No user gesture is required by this policy. Can permit automatic playback, but does not fix missing, incomplete, incompatible, or undecodable audio.
user-gesture-required A user gesture is required. Use a clear user-initiated Play path; a delayed call after generation may not count as that action.
document-user-activation-required Document-level user activation is required. Design playback around user activation in the document rather than assuming background code can start audio.

Electron documents no-user-gesture-required as the default in its current WebPreferences reference and BrowserWindow reference. These are latest-version pages: confirm the behavior and available API against the Electron version bundled with your app. Even where a permissive policy is available, a predictable user-initiated playback flow is often the clearer product behavior.

Electron also exposes webContents.executeJavaScript(code, userGesture), whose optional gesture parameter can mark executed code as a user gesture. That main-process capability is not a substitute for real user intent; prefer wiring an actual renderer click or keyboard action. See the webContents API reference.

4. Compare complete-resource and streaming playback

Choose the playback path based on the response form, latency needs, and how you need to report failures. ElevenLabs documents streaming for selected endpoints; codec support and buffering behavior still depend on the endpoint and the Electron/Chromium version used by the app.

Playback path Response handling Buffering and latency Error diagnosis
Complete audio resource through a media element Provide the element with a complete resource in a supported format. Playback generally waits for the resource to be available as required by the chosen loading strategy. Element error state and the play() promise help distinguish media failure from autoplay denial.
Incremental streaming playback Consume the documented byte stream and feed it into a playback path designed for incremental data. Requires an explicit buffering strategy; potential latency depends on implementation and endpoint. Log stream completion and playback state separately; verify encoding and buffering assumptions for the app’s versions.

5. Use Electron signals to locate where playback stops

Combine renderer-side outcomes with main-process media signals instead of relying on a single symptom. Electron’s webContents API includes media-paused and audio-state-changed; the latter reports whether one or more frames or child webContents are audible.

  • Share Audio Port: With a shared audio port, easily connect another pair to share music or videos—no splitters or special cables needed.
  • The request failed or the response did not complete: investigate the ElevenLabs request and response handling before changing autoplay settings.
  • The response appears complete, but play() rejects with NotAllowedError: focus on autoplay policy and whether playback was initiated by a user action.
  • play() resolves but audio is not audible: inspect mute and volume state, audio routing, decoded-media state, and the app’s output path. The signal narrows the investigation but does not identify a specific cause by itself.
  • Playback fails with another error: inspect media loading and decoding, response completeness, and format compatibility.

Log the request result, play-promise outcome, media errors, and Electron audio events on a shared timeline. This helps distinguish a generation or stream-assembly failure from a renderer playback or output problem without assuming the cause in advance.

6. Keep security protections enabled

Do not weaken Electron security settings as an audio workaround. Electron’s security guidance recommends using secure content, keeping webSecurity enabled, using context isolation and renderer sandboxing, and not enabling Node.js integration for remote content. Playback should be debugged within those boundaries.
