If Dispatch crashes, will not launch, stutters, freezes, or shows black frames, start by updating the game and your system, then work through the fixes that AdHoc Studio recommends for your platform. On Windows, check the published requirements, update graphics drivers, and temporarily disable overlays or subtitle animation to see whether the symptom changes. On Steam Deck, update on the Stable channel and try the recommended Proton compatibility setting. These steps are diagnostic checks, not guaranteed fixes.

What should I try first on Windows?

Update Dispatch through Steam and install available Windows and graphics-driver updates before changing other settings. AdHoc Studio’s developer FAQ says: “If you are experiencing PC crashes, check the minimum specs and ensure all graphics drivers are up to date.” Make one change at a time where possible, then relaunch the game and check whether the same symptom occurs.

  1. Update the game. In Steam, open your Library, select Dispatch, and let any pending update finish before launching. The latest official patch identified here is version 1.0.19512, dated October 22, 2026. Its notes add Deluxe Edition Commentary and Storyboard modes; they do not identify the update as a general crash or stutter fix. Dispatch was released on Steam on October 22, 2025.
  2. Install current Windows and graphics-driver updates. Restart Windows after installing updates, then launch the game again. If the issue began after an update, note that timing for a support report rather than assuming the update caused it.
  3. Compare your PC with the published requirements. Use the minimum and recommended specifications below as a compatibility check. Meeting them does not establish that the game will be free of bugs, but falling below them can identify a system limitation to discuss in a report.
  4. Test the relevant settings. For visual stuttering, turn off overlays temporarily. For instability during subtitle-heavy scenes, disable subtitle animation. For screen tearing or black frames after changing display settings, restore VSync. Restart the game and reproduce the same scene or action after each change.

Published Windows requirements

Valve’s current Steam listing, accessed October 29, 2026, gives the following requirements:

Specification Minimum Recommended
Operating system Windows 10 64-bit or later Windows 10 64-bit or later
Processor Intel Core i5-6402P or AMD Ryzen 5 1600 or higher Intel Core i5-7400 or AMD Ryzen 5 2600 or higher

Graphics NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960 or AMD Radeon RX 560 NVIDIA GTX 1050 or AMD Radeon RX 580
DirectX Version 11 Version 11
Available storage 15 GB 15 GB

These are the listing’s stated specifications, not a promise that every configuration meeting them will run without problems. If your PC is below a listed requirement, include the relevant component and model in a support report; do not treat a hardware purchase as a universal fix for crashes or stuttering.

The memory numbers deserve context. The listing names 2 GB RAM as the minimum and 16 GB as recommended. A machine with 8 GB is not automatically unsupported, but it is below the recommended figure, so mention that when describing pauses or instability. The same principle applies to the processor and graphics card: a model that is technically close to the minimum can still behave differently from a system at the recommended level. The requirements are a starting point for diagnosis, not a performance guarantee.

Storage is also explicit: keep at least 15 GB available for the installation. That figure does not prove that every crash is caused by a full drive, and the official guidance does not identify low free space as a universal cause. It is still sensible to check that Steam can complete updates and that the drive has the 15 GB listed by Valve before drawing conclusions from a failed update.

Prepare a repeatable test before changing settings

A short, repeatable test makes each change meaningful. Write down whether the problem is a launch failure, a crash after reaching the menu, a freeze during a particular scene, stuttering throughout play, tearing, or black frames. Note whether the game closes by itself or remains open, and whether audio continues when the image stops. Record the scene, menu, or action immediately before the symptom and whether it occurs every time or only occasionally.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Close and relaunch Dispatch after each major change, then perform the same action again. If a cutscene produces the issue, replay that cutscene; if the game fails during launch, use the same launch sequence. This approach cannot prove a cause, but it prevents several simultaneous changes from making the result impossible to interpret.

How do I tell which fix matches my symptom?

Match the first check to what you can observe, then change one setting and retry. A crash at launch, a freeze with sound continuing, and screen tearing are different symptoms; the developer’s recommendations do not establish one cause that explains all of them.

What happens First relevant check What to compare
The game crashes or closes on Windows Check the PC requirements and update graphics drivers Whether the same crash still occurs after updating and restarting
Visual stuttering or other visual performance problems Temporarily disable Steam, Discord, and NVIDIA GeForce overlays The same scene with overlays off versus on
Instability during or after subtitles appear Temporarily disable subtitle animation Whether replaying the scene changes the behavior
Black frames or screen tearing after display settings changed Restore VSync Whether the visual problem persists with VSync restored
Steam Deck will not launch the game Update the Deck on Stable and try the recommended compatibility tool Whether the game launches after the system and compatibility changes
It freezes but audio continues Record the exact point and platform; use the relevant update and setting checks above Whether the image recovers, the game closes, or the freeze repeats at the same point

The final row is a way to describe the failure accurately, not a developer-confirmed diagnosis. The official guidance cited here does not identify audio continuing during a freeze as proof of a particular cause.

How do I disable overlays and subtitle animation?

AdHoc Studio recommends these as reversible checks for PC visual-performance problems and possible subtitle-related memory leaks. Change the setting temporarily, restart Dispatch, and compare the same scene rather than changing several options at once.

Disable overlays

The developer FAQ names Steam, Discord, and NVIDIA GeForce overlays. Turn off the overlay or in-game overlay feature in the relevant application’s settings, then relaunch the game. If you want to isolate which overlay matters, disable one at a time; if you only need a quick diagnostic, disable the named overlays for one comparison run and restore them afterward if the symptom is unchanged.

AdHoc Studio’s wording is: “Disabling game overlays like Steam, Discord, or NVIDIA GeForce can also help.” This is a recommendation to test, not confirmation that an overlay is responsible for every stutter or visual problem. If turning an overlay off changes nothing, turn it back on if you rely on it and continue with the next relevant check. If only one overlay appears related, report that exact comparison rather than saying all overlays are incompatible.

Disable subtitle animation

Temporarily turn off subtitle animation in the game’s subtitle or accessibility settings, then replay the affected section or restart the game and see whether the symptom returns. AdHoc Studio’s FAQ says: “You can also try disabling subtitle animation as this can cause memory leaks.” The FAQ identifies a potential issue; it does not say subtitle animation causes every crash or establish that disabling it will resolve every freeze.

Use this test when the problem appears during dialogue or after subtitles have been displayed for a while, but do not wait for that pattern before trying it if you are troubleshooting repeated crashes. Keep a note of the setting’s original state. If the symptom is unchanged with animation disabled, that is useful negative information for support; it does not rule out every memory-related problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I restore VSync for black frames or tearing?

Yes, if you changed display settings and are seeing screen tearing or black frames, restore VSync and check the result. AdHoc Studio’s FAQ says VSync is enabled automatically, but a player can turn it off; the FAQ notes that it can help with tearing or black frames.

  1. Open the game’s display or graphics settings.
  2. Check whether VSync is off; if so, turn it back on.
  3. Apply the setting, restart the game if needed, and revisit the scene where the issue appeared.
  4. If the symptom remains, record whether VSync was already enabled or whether restoring it changed anything.

This check is specifically relevant to tearing or black frames after a display-setting change. It is not presented as a general fix for every crash or performance problem. Do not describe a tearing-only issue as a crash unless the game actually closes or stops responding.

How do I fix Dispatch if it will not launch on Steam Deck?

AdHoc Studio’s Steam Deck guidance is to update the device on the Stable channel and force Proton 9.0-4 or the latest compatibility tool bundled with Steam. The latest bundled tool may differ over time, so the FAQ does not establish Proton 9.0-4 as permanently the best choice.

  1. Update the Deck. Open Steam > Settings > System, check for a system update, and use the Stable system update channel. Install available updates and allow the device to restart if prompted.
  2. Open the game’s compatibility settings. In the Steam Library, select Dispatch, open Properties > Compatibility, and enable Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool.
  3. Select a Proton version. Choose Proton 9.0-4 or the latest compatibility tool bundled with Steam, as the official FAQ advises.
  4. Retry the launch and note the result. If it still fails, record which compatibility tool you selected, whether the game reaches a title screen, and any point at which the launch stops.

These are the official checks for Steam Deck launch failures in the cited FAQ. They should not be read as a promise that every Deck launch issue has the same cause. If the game launches after changing Proton, keep the selected version noted in case a later update changes the behavior. If it does not launch, avoid cycling through unrelated community settings while you are trying to produce a clear report; first document the Stable-channel update and the exact compatibility tool tested.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Deck path is separate from the Windows path. Do not use Windows driver instructions as a substitute for updating the Deck system software, and do not assume that a Proton choice proven on one Deck is permanently optimal for every Steam release. The official wording deliberately allows the latest bundled compatibility tool.

What should I do if the game still crashes or stutters?

If the relevant updates and reversible setting checks do not resolve the problem, send it to AdHoc Studio through its official bug-report form or the support email shown in the developer FAQ. A useful report makes the failure reproducible on paper: describe what happened, where it happened, and what changed after each check.

  • Platform and operating system, including whether the issue is on Windows PC or Steam Deck.
  • CPU, GPU, and RAM for a Windows PC; for a Deck, identify the device and the compatibility tool selected.
  • Dispatch version, if visible in Steam or the game.
  • The exact scene, action, or launch stage where the issue occurs.
  • Whether the image freezes while audio continues, the game closes, or black frames or tearing appear.
  • Whether the problem began after an update, and which updates were installed.
  • Which checks you tried and whether each changed the symptom.

Separate observations from guesses. For example, report that the freeze happened at the same scene twice, rather than stating that a particular setting caused it unless changing that setting consistently changed the result. The official FAQ confirms the report route; it does not prescribe a complete mandatory list of fields.

A concise report format

You can organize the message in a few lines: “Platform and system,” “Dispatch version,” “Exact failure and reproduction steps,” “Audio or image behavior,” “Updates installed,” and “Tests attempted with results.” Include the model names for a Windows CPU and GPU, the amount of RAM, and the Proton version for a Deck. If the crash occurs only after a particular subtitle sequence or display change, say so. If you cannot reproduce it reliably, give the number of attempts and what was different each time.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not attach a speculative diagnosis as fact. Saying “the screen froze with audio continuing at the same scene twice” is more useful than saying “the GPU is definitely failing.” Likewise, say that disabling an overlay did or did not change the stutter, rather than claiming the overlay is universally broken. This distinction helps the support team compare reports across platforms and versions.

How should I interpret the latest Dispatch patch?

The latest official patch identified here is version 1.0.19512, dated October 22, 2026. AdHoc Studio’s notes say it adds Deluxe Edition Commentary and Storyboard modes; they do not establish that it is a universal remedy for crashes, launch failures, or stuttering.

Keeping the game current is still the right first check, but if the same issue remains on the current version, report the exact symptom and when it occurs. Avoid assuming a patch fixed a specific failure unless the official notes say so. A new version can also change the conditions under which a symptom appears, so include the version number in any follow-up report.

What not to conclude from a failed test

A setting that did not help is not proof that the game, hardware, or operating system is permanently incompatible. Overlay behavior can vary by application, subtitle animation can matter only in certain scenes, and VSync addresses display synchronization rather than every form of stutter. Similarly, meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee a bug-free session, while falling below them does not identify one exact failing component.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no official basis here for promising a particular graphics card, processor, RAM kit, SSD, controller, or headset as a universal Dispatch fix. Consider hardware changes only in the broader context of the published requirements, and provide the existing model details to support first. The same caution applies to third-party “optimizer” utilities or unverified launch parameters: they are not part of AdHoc Studio’s cited troubleshooting path and can make a support report harder to interpret.

Frequently asked questions

Can a crash that happens at the same scene be reported as a game bug?

Yes. Include the scene and the action immediately before the crash, and note whether it happens consistently or only sometimes. That gives support a more useful description than a general report that the game crashes.

What if only one display problem happens, such as tearing, while the rest of the game works?

Describe it as a visual symptom and say when it appears, rather than grouping it with a crash. That distinction helps separate a display-setting issue from a failure that closes or prevents the game from launching.

Should I change several settings at once to save time?

For diagnosis, avoid that when possible: if the symptom changes, you will not know which change mattered. A brief comparison after each reversible change makes the result easier to describe to support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is Proton 9.0-4 always the correct Steam Deck version?

No permanent preference is established. AdHoc Studio’s guidance allows Proton 9.0-4 or the latest compatibility tool bundled with Steam. Record which one you tested because the bundled version can change.

Does disabling subtitle animation guarantee that a crash will stop?

No. The developer identifies subtitle animation as something that can cause memory leaks and recommends trying it disabled. Treat the change as a diagnostic comparison, not a guarantee.

Will the October 2026 patch automatically fix stuttering?

The version 1.0.19512 notes add Deluxe Edition Commentary and Storyboard modes but do not describe a universal stutter or crash fix. Update anyway, then report any remaining problem against that version.

What if my computer is below the minimum specification?

List the exact processor, graphics card, RAM, operating system, and available storage in your support request. The requirements identify a compatibility baseline; they do not tell you which upgrade would cure a particular symptom.
