Possibly—but the 37× figure is not a universal property of phone LLMs. In an October 12 DEV Community post, Pingredsai measured llama.cpp on a Google Pixel 4 (Snapdragon 855) with Qwen2.5-1.5B-Instruct Q4_K_M. The Android Debug build generated 0.5 tokens per second, while the Release build generated 18.5 tokens per second. The reported difference came from the native CMake build configuration: the generated Debug build did not contain the expected optimization flags. Before changing models or blaming the phone, inspect the generated build.ninja and CMakeCache.txt, confirm the effective build type, and verify the compiler command that actually built llama.cpp.
What does the reported 37× slowdown actually measure?
It measures one author’s comparison of two native builds on one device and one quantized model, not a benchmark for every Android phone or every LLM. Pingredsai used a Pixel 4 with a Snapdragon 855 and Qwen2.5-1.5B-Instruct Q4_K_M. The Debug and Release results were reported as follows:
| Inference phase | Debug | Release | Reported ratio | Conditions |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Token generation | 0.5 tok/s | 18.5 tok/s | 37× | Pingredsai’s measurement on the Pixel 4/Snapdragon 855 with Qwen2.5-1.5B-Instruct Q4_K_M |
| First-token latency | 1,863 ms | 52 ms | 36× | Same device and model; author-reported result |
| Prefill of 43 tokens | 42 seconds | 0.556 seconds | 75× | Same device and model; author-reported result |
| Model load | 24 seconds | 3.9 seconds | 6× | Same device and model; author-reported result |
These numbers were not independently reproduced, and the post does not establish the complete Android Gradle Plugin, CMake, NDK, compiler, or project revisions. Treat them as a diagnostic example. A different phone, ABI, model size, quantization, thermal state, or measurement harness can produce very different ratios.
Why can Debug versus Release matter so much for llama.cpp?
The compiler’s optimization level changes the machine code executed by the native inference library. Pingredsai’s explanation points to inlining, loop transformations, vectorization, register allocation, and dead-code elimination. These transformations are especially important in the tight numerical loops used by matrix operations and quantized kernels.

A Debug configuration commonly prioritizes debuggability over throughput. It may disable or reduce optimization, retain assertions, and emit additional information that makes stepping through code easier. A Release configuration normally enables the optimization settings selected by the project and removes checks intended only for development. The exact flags are toolchain- and project-dependent, so do not infer them from the Gradle variant name alone.
The practical distinction is between requested configuration and effective configuration. A Gradle task can be named release-like while the generated native files still select Debug, or a CMake cache can retain an older value from a previous configuration. Conversely, a project can select Release while a custom flag or toolchain file removes the optimization you expected. Only the generated build files and compile commands show what the compiler received.
How do I check the effective Android native configuration?
Check the generated files in the native build directory, not only the Gradle or IDE settings. The directory location differs by Android Gradle Plugin and project layout, but it is commonly under the module’s .cxx directory or another external-native-build output directory.
-
Find the configuration directory
Locate the folder containing both
build.ninjaandCMakeCache.txtfor the ABI and variant you benchmarked. Android projects can have separate directories for each ABI, so inspect the one that produced the application you ran. -
Read the CMake cache
Search the cache for the build type and compiler flags. For example, from the configuration directory:
grep -nE 'CMAKE_BUILD_TYPE|CMAKE_(C|CXX)_FLAGS|CMAKE_TOOLCHAIN_FILE' CMakeCache.txtLook for
CMAKE_BUILD_TYPE:STRING=DebugorRelease, then inspect both the base flags and the configuration-specific entries. A cache value is evidence of what CMake configured; it is not proof that every target inherited the same options. -
Inspect Ninja’s compile rules
Search
build.ninjafor the actual command fragments:Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

grep -nE -- '-O[0-3s]|-g|DNDEBUG|CMAKE_BUILD_TYPE' build.ninjaFind a compile rule for llama.cpp or its ggml sources and read the complete command. Confirm whether an optimization option such as
-O2or-O3is present, whether-O0appears, and whether debug-only definitions or assertions are enabled. Do not rely on a single unrelated target. -
Check the compiler invocation at build time
Run the native build with verbose output if your project exposes that option, or use Ninja’s verbose mode in the generated directory:
ninja -vCompare the command for several performance-critical source files. This catches per-target overrides that are easy to miss in a high-level Gradle configuration.
-
Record the ABI and variant
Write down whether the binary is arm64-v8a or another ABI, which Gradle variant produced it, and which generated directory you inspected. Looking at an arm64 Release cache while running an armeabi-v7a Debug binary can make a correct diagnosis appear ineffective.

If the cache says Release but the compile command has no optimization option, investigate toolchain files, target-level properties, and flags appended later in the CMake project. If the command contains the expected options, the build-type problem may already be fixed and another bottleneck needs attention.
How can I make the native llama.cpp build use Release settings?
Choose the Release native variant and set the CMake configuration before adding the llama.cpp subdirectory, then delete stale native outputs and rebuild. The exact Gradle wiring depends on your Android Gradle Plugin, CMake, NDK, and project structure; the following CMake pattern illustrates the ordering described in Pingredsai’s post rather than prescribing one universal project file.
# Place these settings before add_subdirectory(llama.cpp)
set(CMAKE_BUILD_TYPE Release CACHE STRING "Build type" FORCE)
set(CMAKE_C_FLAGS_RELEASE "-O3 -DNDEBUG" CACHE STRING "C flags" FORCE)
set(CMAKE_CXX_FLAGS_RELEASE "-O3 -DNDEBUG" CACHE STRING "C++ flags" FORCE)
add_subdirectory(llama.cpp)
Use the optimization level supported by your compiler and project policy; -O3 in this example is not a claim that every project should use it or that it was the exact flag in the Pixel 4 test. If your toolchain already supplies architecture-specific options, append rather than overwrite them. Unconditionally replacing flags can remove required Android, ABI, sanitizer, or hardening options.

Pass the native build configuration through the supported external-native-build settings for your Android Gradle Plugin, or set it in the CMake toolchain invocation. Do not assume that a Java or Kotlin build type automatically controls every native target.
-
Delete the generated native directory for the affected ABI and variant, or run the project’s clean task, so an old CMake cache cannot preserve Debug settings.
-
Reconfigure and rebuild, then inspect the newly generated

Some generators use a multi-configuration model in which the build type is selected at build time rather than by CMAKE_BUILD_TYPE. In that case, use the generator’s Release configuration switch and verify the resulting command line. Android projects commonly use Ninja, but the generated files—not assumptions about the generator—decide which method applies.
What is the difference between CPU instruction support and compiler optimization?
They are separate checks. A Snapdragon 855 can support particular ARM instructions, and a compiler may emit one of them, but that does not prove the whole program was optimized.

The post specifically warns that seeing an ARM dot-product instruction such as sdot in a disassembly is not sufficient evidence of a fully optimized build. A single kernel, library, or code path can contain that instruction while other hot loops remain unoptimized, while inlining and register allocation remain poor, or while debug assertions dominate execution. Verify optimization flags across the relevant targets and inspect more than one hot function when using disassembly as a diagnostic.
Instruction-set selection answers “what operations may the compiler use?” Optimization level answers “how aggressively should it transform this code?” Both can matter, but changing one does not automatically establish the other.

How should I benchmark the change fairly?
Hold the workload and measurement method constant, and label the inference phase being measured. The Pixel 4 report shows why: prefill, first-token latency, steady-state generation, and model loading respond differently to a build change.
- Device and processor: record the exact phone model and SoC, and keep thermal state and power mode consistent.
- Model and quantization: use the same model file, context settings, and quantization, such as Qwen2.5-1.5B-Instruct Q4_K_M.
- Prompt: use identical prompt text and token count. State whether the reported prefill count is 43 tokens or another length.
- Phase: report model-load time, prefill time, first-token latency, and generation throughput separately instead of combining them into one score.
- Build: record Gradle variant, CMake build type, effective compiler flags, ABI, NDK, CMake, Android Gradle Plugin, and compiler revisions.
- Run conditions: warm up consistently, avoid background workloads, and repeat enough runs to expose thermal throttling or startup variance.
A fair comparison changes one variable at a time. If you change the model, thread count, backend, compiler, and build type together, a faster result cannot be attributed to the compiler configuration.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What if Release is selected but the phone is still slow?
A Release label rules out only one class of configuration mistake. Follow the symptom to the next check rather than repeatedly toggling the same setting.
The generated files still show Debug
Remove the stale native configuration directory, verify that you are inspecting the ABI actually packaged in the APK, and reconfigure. A cached CMake value can survive a Gradle variant change.

Only first-token or prefill latency is poor
Inspect prompt length, context size, and the code path used for prompt processing. A steady-state token rate can look healthy while a long prompt or an unoptimized prefill path dominates perceived response time.
The binary contains the expected ARM instructions
Continue auditing the complete compile commands and hot loops. The presence of sdot or another SIMD instruction does not establish that every target received the intended optimization level.
Results vary between runs
Measure temperature, battery mode, and background activity. Mobile SoCs can reduce frequency when warm, so compare builds under the same thermal conditions and report whether the numbers are single runs or repeated measurements.
What does this case prove—and what does it leave unknown?
It demonstrates a useful debugging workflow: when a mobile LLM is implausibly slow, inspect the generated native build and compare Debug with Release before replacing hardware or models. In the reported Pixel 4 case, the author associated the large change with a native build configuration whose generated files lacked optimization flags.
It does not prove that every Android Debug build is 37× slower, that a particular optimization pass caused the entire improvement, or that the same ratios will appear on another Snapdragon device. The available account has no independent reproduction and does not identify the full Gradle, CMake, NDK, or compiler revisions. Those missing details limit how precisely another developer can recreate the measurement.
Use the reported ratios as a warning sign: an unexpectedly enormous Debug-to-Release gap justifies examining build.ninja and CMakeCache.txt. It is not a performance promise for your phone.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I keep a debugger attached to an optimized Android native build?
Yes. Optimization and debug-symbol generation are separate decisions, although optimized code can make breakpoints move, variables disappear, and stack traces harder to follow. Many teams keep symbols for crash analysis while using a Release-like optimization level for performance testing.

Does changing only the Gradle variant rebuild llama.cpp?
Not necessarily. Android’s external-native-build outputs are cached by variant, ABI, and configuration. If the native directory is reused, inspect its cache and compile commands or remove that configuration before concluding that the variant change took effect.
Why can model loading improve less than token generation?
Loading is affected by file I/O, memory mapping, allocation, and tensor initialization as well as compiled math kernels. Compiler optimization can reduce CPU work without removing storage latency, so each phase can show a different speedup.
Is a smaller quantized model always faster after the build is fixed?
No. Quantization reduces memory and arithmetic cost, but kernel support, thread scheduling, prompt length, and hardware utilization still determine latency. Compare models with the same prompt and separately reported prefill and generation metrics.
