Reports of Qatari mediation in Tehran are therefore a market variable, not just a diplomatic story. A credible de-escalation could unwind some of the geopolitical premium. Why should I watch Treasury yields and the dollar together?
Track the 10-year and 30-year Treasury yields as a pair, then compare their intraday move with the dollar index. The latest Reuters snapshot put the 10-year at 4.974%, the 30-year at 5.299% and the dollar index at 101.64.
When longer-term yields rise and the dollar strengthens, global financial conditions usually tighten: dollar funding becomes more expensive and the present value of future corporate earnings falls. When yields decline but the dollar remains firm, the move may reflect defensive demand for US assets rather than an easing in risk conditions. Ray Attrill, head of foreign-exchange strategy at National Australia Bank, said the US bond market appeared to be “in the driving seat” for broader dollar performance.
Compare the size and speed of the yield move, not just the level. A sharp move in the 30-year yield can signal concern about long-run borrowing costs, while a move concentrated in shorter maturities is more closely tied to expected policy rates.

The calendar is unusually dense, and guidance may matter more than the headline decisions.

Bruce Kasman, global head of economics at JPMorgan, said G3 central banks were likely to remain on hold while Canada could begin tightening, with first moves from the United Kingdom and Sweden expected the following month. Japan’s Nikkei, South Korea’s market and Chinese blue chips were lower in the cited session, while MSCI’s broadest Asia-Pacific index excluding Japan also eased. South Korea’s market had fallen almost 19% that month, making breadth especially important: determine whether selling remains concentrated there and in China or spreads across Asia and Europe.
Gold and bitcoin can provide secondary information about risk appetite and liquidity. Spot gold was near $3,986.16 an ounce and bitcoin near $79,925.84 in the same snapshot. - Start with the overnight map: Record Brent, the 10-year and 30-year yields, the dollar index and major regional equity moves before the local open.
- Identify the dominant impulse: Decide whether the largest move began in energy, bonds, currencies, policy expectations or equities.
- Check confirmation: Ask whether at least two other asset classes are responding in the same direction. Oil up with yields and a firmer dollar points to inflationary tightening risk; falling yields with broad equity weakness points to defensive positioning.
- Overlay the calendar: Mark the next central-bank decision and earnings release, then distinguish an actual announcement from a market-implied expectation.

Should gold and bitcoin be treated as competing safe havens?
