Mozilla’s documentation confirms the control, but does not establish that Firefox is the first major browser to offer one.
How to turn off AI in Firefox on desktop
- Open Firefox’s menu bar and select Firefox > Settings (or Preferences).
- Select AI Controls.
- Turn on Block AI enhancements to block current and future AI-enhanced features. Mozilla says this also suppresses prompts and reminders about existing or upcoming AI features, and the setting persists across updates. See Mozilla’s instructions for turning off or choosing AI features.
Block all AI features or choose them one by one
The global block is not the only option. In AI Controls, set an individual feature’s dropdown to Blocked while leaving others available or enabled. Mozilla defines Available as visible and usable, Enabled as opted in, and Blocked as hidden and unusable.
At desktop launch, Mozilla listed translations, PDF alt text, AI-enhanced tab groups, link previews, and a sidebar chatbot. Which controls appear may change as Firefox adds features.
Firefox AI controls on iPhone and Android
Mozilla announced mobile AI controls for iOS and Android on May 19, 2026. The mobile feature list differs from desktop: examples include translations and voice search on Android, and translations and Shake to Summarize on iOS. Options depend on the device and location, so the desktop list should not be assumed to appear on every phone. See Mozilla’s mobile AI Controls announcement.

What the controls mean for privacy
Turning off AI features is a choice about feature availability, not a single description of how every feature handles data. Mozilla’s privacy notice says automated website translation and PDF alt-text suggestions use small language models downloaded to the device and operate locally; for those functions, page content, PDFs, images, and tab URLs stay on the device.
Other features have different handling. Chatbot use is subject to the selected provider’s terms and privacy notice. Mozilla says it cannot access chatbot conversations or input content, though it collects technical and interaction data about use. For Shake to Summarize, Mozilla says summaries are generated locally on compatible devices with supported on-device intelligence. Otherwise, page content is sent to a Mozilla server for processing and returned; Mozilla says it does not store that content or the resulting summaries. When Firefox AI Controls launched
Mozilla announced on February 2, 2026, that AI Controls would arrive with Firefox 148, scheduled to roll out on February 24. The initial controls were for desktop. Mozilla published user instructions on February 24, then announced mobile controls on May 19. Its administrator reference for the AIControls policy was last updated October 1, 2026.
What administrators should know
Mozilla provides an AIControls policy reference listing affected settings, including chatbot, translation, PDF alt text, link-preview key points, smart tab groups, Smart Window, and speech recognition controls. A list of affected preferences alone does not establish an organization’s defaults or the exact behavior of a deployment; administrators should consult the current policy documentation.

Is Firefox the first major browser with an AI kill switch?
“Kill switch” is a convenient description of Firefox’s Block AI enhancements control, not the name of a separate technical feature. Mozilla documents a global block for current and future AI-enhanced features, but its sources do not compare browser controls or define “major browser.” The product setting is documented; the claim that Firefox was first is not independently established by those sources.
