Short answer: choose the smallest isolation boundary that matches what an AI agent is allowed to do. Standard containers share the host kernel and are efficient, but a coding agent that can install packages, execute arbitrary code, or control Docker deserves a stronger boundary such as a microVM. Firecracker is a low-level KVM-based virtual-machine monitor for building that boundary; Docker Sandboxes package a per-agent microVM with a private Docker daemon and configurable file, network, and credential access. gVisor inserts a userspace application kernel, while Kata Containers provides a VM-backed route in a container ecosystem.
None of these labels makes risk disappear. Mounted workspaces, forwarded credentials, network policy, host integrations, runtime bugs, and configuration determine what an agent can actually reach.
What does “isolating an AI agent” actually mean?
Isolation separates an agent’s code execution from the host, other tenants, and sensitive services. The useful question is not whether a product says “sandbox,” but which operating-system boundary is enforced and which connections are deliberately opened.

- Kernel boundary: Does the workload share the host kernel, use a userspace kernel-like layer, or run with a separate guest kernel?
- Filesystem boundary: Which paths are mounted, are they read-only or read-write, and are edits immediately visible on the host?
- Network boundary: Which destinations, ports, DNS services, and metadata endpoints are reachable?
- Credential boundary: Are tokens injected, proxied, forwarded through an SSH agent, or absent?
- Control-plane boundary: Can the agent reach a host Docker socket, local tool server, hypervisor API, or other management interface?
These boundaries are separate. A microVM with a read-write host mount can still alter valuable files, and a container with no sensitive mounts may be an acceptable choice for a trusted build.
How do containers, gVisor, and microVMs differ?
Containers isolate processes with namespaces and cgroups while sharing the host kernel. A microVM supplies a guest kernel behind a hypervisor boundary. gVisor takes a different route: a userspace application kernel implements a Linux-like interface between the workload and the host.
| Option | Isolation model | What it is good for | Important caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard container | Namespaces and cgroups in a shared host kernel | Trusted services, reproducible packaging, and high process density | A kernel vulnerability or an overly powerful mount can affect the host; a host Docker socket is especially sensitive. |
| Firecracker microVM | A KVM-based virtual-machine monitor starts a guest kernel; one Firecracker process encapsulates one microVM | Teams building a controlled, multi-tenant execution service | Firecracker is a building block. You must supply images, networking, storage, lifecycle management, and policy. |
| Docker Sandbox | Docker documents a microVM per local sandbox, with a separate kernel and private Docker daemon | Local coding agents that need Docker inside an isolated environment | Workspace modes and host integrations create explicit exceptions to the VM boundary; verify current platform and agent support. |
| gVisor | A userspace application kernel exposes a Linux-like interface; runsc is an OCI runtime for Docker and Kubernetes |
Deployments wanting OCI workflows plus an additional syscall-interception layer | Compatibility and performance depend on the workload and configuration; test the syscalls your agent actually uses. |
| Kata Containers | Container-oriented tooling with VM-backed isolation; the Firecracker project lists it as an integration | Organizations seeking a VM-backed runtime in a container ecosystem | The available material does not establish current architecture or performance details, so validate them in your own deployment. |
Docker’s own comparison describes the shared-kernel distinction and characterizes a VM plus private daemon as having more resource overhead than a container. That is a vendor comparison, not an independent head-to-head benchmark.
What is Firecracker, and when should I use it?
Firecracker is an open-source virtual-machine monitor (VMM) built on Linux KVM. It is designed to create lightweight microVMs rather than provide a complete agent platform. The Firecracker design documentation states that each Firecracker process encapsulates one and only one microVM.
What Firecracker gives you
- A hypervisor-backed guest-kernel boundary instead of merely a shared host kernel.
- A small VMM intended to reduce the device and management surface exposed to each guest.
- Integration points for infrastructure projects; the project materials list containerd and Kata Containers among integrations.
- Configurable virtual CPUs, memory, disks, networking, and lifecycle through the VMM’s interfaces.
What your team still has to build
Firecracker does not decide which repository an agent can edit, which domains it can contact, or how credentials are issued. Your service must build or select a guest image, boot and tear down VMs, attach storage, configure networking, collect logs, enforce quotas, rotate credentials, and recover from failed or hostile guests.

The design calls for defense in depth around the Firecracker process itself: seccomp filtering, cgroups, namespaces, and dropping privileges supplement the KVM boundary. The threat model treats guest vCPU threads as potentially malicious, so “the guest is virtualized” is not a reason to omit host process confinement.
How should I interpret Firecracker’s published figures?
The project website reports more than 15 trillion monthly Lambda function invocations, boot times under 125 milliseconds, and less than 5 MiB overhead per VM. The page does not provide a measurement date or independent benchmark in the available material; treat these as project-site claims, not guarantees for your hardware, image, storage, or workload.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe Firecracker repository states defaults of one vCPU and 128 MiB of memory for configured microVMs. Those are implementation defaults, not a recommended size or a performance result. Agent builds, language runtimes, and dependency caches commonly require a deliberate resource policy.
How do Docker Sandboxes isolate an AI coding agent?
Docker documents a local sandbox as a microVM with its own kernel and a private Docker daemon. That lets an agent run Docker commands without automatically sharing the host kernel or host daemon, while Docker supplies controls for networking, credentials, and workspace connections.
Workspace modes are a trust decision
| Mode | Files the agent sees | Effect on the host | Use when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct mode | The workspace is mounted read-write | Edits are live on the host | You need immediate results and have source control, backups, and review controls that can absorb agent mistakes. |
| Clone mode | The repository is mounted read-only and a private clone is used inside the sandbox | Changes remain in the sandbox until you explicitly export or review them | You want a stronger checkpoint before modifying the host checkout. |
A VM boundary does not override a read-write mount. In direct mode, a command that deletes or rewrites files has a host-visible effect even if the process itself runs in a guest.

Other connections that need review
- Network destinations: allow only the registries, source hosts, APIs, and service endpoints the agent needs. An unrestricted network lets code exfiltrate secrets or fetch unreviewed payloads.
- Credential proxying: expose short-lived, least-privilege credentials where possible rather than copying a broad developer token into the guest.
- SSH-agent forwarding: forwarding an agent socket gives code a path to attempt authentication as that identity; use a dedicated key or avoid forwarding it.
- Shared skills or tool mounts: inspect every mounted directory and its write mode. A writable helper directory can become a persistence mechanism.
- Local integrations: Docker’s security documentation notes that local stdio MCP servers execute outside the sandbox VM. Treat those host processes as privileged bridges.
- Agent privileges: Docker says the agent has sudo privileges inside its sandbox VM. That is useful for development but does not grant permission to relax host-side controls.
Because platform support, policy defaults, and supported agents can change, check the current Docker documentation before standardizing a workflow.

A container can be the right answer when the workload is trusted, the host kernel is part of the accepted trust domain, and the agent has narrowly scoped files and credentials. Containers generally start quickly, consume fewer resources, and fit existing orchestration and image pipelines.
Do not treat a container as a separate machine. Namespaces isolate process, mount, network, and user views, while cgroups constrain resource use; all of those mechanisms rely on the same host kernel. Avoid privileged mode, unnecessary capabilities, device mounts, and the host Docker socket for autonomous agents. If an agent can write arbitrary code and reach sensitive services, reassess whether a shared-kernel boundary meets the threat model.
What is gVisor, and how does it compare with a microVM?
gVisor implements a Linux-like application interface in a userspace “application kernel.” Its runsc runtime is OCI-compatible and integrates with Docker and Kubernetes. Applications continue to use familiar container images, while many system calls are handled by gVisor rather than passed directly to the host kernel.
This is a different architecture from a conventional microVM: there is not simply a second guest kernel booted behind KVM. The trade-off is workload compatibility and operational fit. Test language runtimes, debuggers, filesystem behavior, networking, and any agent-generated system calls in the exact orchestration environment you plan to use. The available material contains no independent comparative benchmark, so do not promise that gVisor is faster or safer than a particular microVM in every workload.

Where does Kata Containers fit?
The Firecracker project lists Kata Containers as an integration, making it a relevant direction for teams that want VM-backed isolation exposed through container-oriented tooling. That can reduce the change from an existing container deployment model, but the integration listing alone does not establish which hypervisor, defaults, supported platforms, or performance profile your current release uses. Treat Kata as an option to evaluate, not as a fixed specification.
How should I choose an isolation option for an AI agent?
Start with the agent’s allowed actions, not with a favorite runtime. The least complex option that places the boundary outside the attacker’s reach is usually the most maintainable.
| Agent situation | Reasonable starting point | Checks before production |
|---|---|---|
| Trusted build or test job with curated code | Standard container | Drop capabilities, remove host sockets, restrict mounts and egress, and enforce CPU, memory, and process limits. |
| Autonomous coding agent running untrusted repositories | Docker Sandbox or another managed microVM workflow | Confirm guest-kernel separation, workspace mode, network allowlist, credential proxy, host integrations, and recovery behavior. |
| Platform team operating many tenants | Firecracker-based service, or a VM-backed container runtime | Design image supply chain, scheduler quotas, process confinement, storage cleanup, observability, and tenant teardown. |
| Existing Docker/Kubernetes platform needing an additional syscall boundary | gVisor | Run compatibility and performance tests against real agent workloads and required system calls. |
Ask these questions in a design review:
- Does every agent receive a separate guest kernel, or is the host kernel shared?
- Can the agent create nested containers, and which daemon do those containers contact?
- Which exact paths are mounted, with what read and write permissions?
- Can code reach cloud metadata, internal DNS, source control, package registries, or arbitrary Internet destinations?
- Which credentials are visible, for how long, and through which proxy or socket?
- Can the runtime run on the target CPU, operating system, and orchestration platform?
- What happens when the agent times out, exhausts memory, fills its disk, or attempts a forbidden operation?
How do I design a safer agent sandbox?
Use a layered policy rather than relying on the runtime name.
- Define the task boundary. List commands, files, services, and outbound destinations the agent genuinely needs. Anything not on the list is denied by default.
- Select the kernel boundary. Use a container for an accepted shared-kernel trust domain; evaluate gVisor or a microVM when arbitrary code or tenant separation raises the risk.
- Make the workspace reversible. Prefer a read-only source mount plus an isolated writable clone for untrusted work. If direct read-write mode is required, use branch protection, backups, and a review gate.
- Separate credentials. Issue short-lived, narrowly scoped tokens. Do not expose a general-purpose cloud credential or a personal SSH agent merely for convenience.
- Constrain egress. Permit named registries and APIs, log DNS and connection attempts, and block metadata and control-plane addresses unless explicitly required.
- Constrain resources. Set CPU, memory, disk, process-count, and execution-time limits. Clean up disks, sockets, and network namespaces after every run.
- Harden the host or supervisor. For Firecracker, apply the project’s defense-in-depth guidance—seccomp, cgroups, namespaces, and privilege dropping—in addition to KVM. For any runtime, minimize host services and patch the kernel, VMM, and orchestration layer.
- Observe and recover. Record commands, image digests, network decisions, file exports, and termination reasons. Test forced teardown and assume a failed run may have attempted persistence or exfiltration.
Can an AI agent escape a sandbox?
No isolation mechanism should be described as escape-proof. A runtime vulnerability, a misconfigured capability, an exposed management socket, an overly broad mount, a forwarded credential, or a host-side integration can provide a path around the intended boundary.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
MicroVMs add a hypervisor boundary, but the Firecracker design still recommends process confinement because the VMM and its host process remain part of the trusted-computing base. Containers have a smaller operational footprint but share the host kernel. Docker Sandboxes limit the guest through a VM while explicitly allowing configured workspace, network, credential, and host-tool connections. The practical security claim is therefore conditional: an agent is limited by the boundaries you configure and the components you keep patched.

What should I test before allowing untrusted code?
- Attempt reads and writes outside the intended workspace, including symlinks and mounted helper directories.
- Try to reach blocked domains, internal addresses, cloud metadata, and the host’s management interfaces.
- Check whether package installation, compilers, debuggers, and nested Docker workflows behave as required without adding privilege.
- Verify that credentials are absent from environment variables, shell history, process listings, image layers, and build logs.
- Kill the agent during file writes, network activity, and image pulls; confirm cleanup and that no process or mount remains.
- Repeat tests after changing workspace mode, network policy, runtime version, host kernel, or orchestration settings.
These tests establish whether your configuration behaves as intended; they are not proof that a runtime has no undiscovered vulnerability.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I run an AI coding agent inside a container on my laptop?
A container can be reasonable for trusted repositories and tightly scoped tasks. For untrusted code, use a disposable workspace, remove host sockets and broad mounts, restrict outbound traffic, and consider a separate-kernel sandbox if the agent can install arbitrary software or operate autonomously.
Is a read-only repository mount enough to protect my source code?
It protects the mounted checkout from direct writes, but it does not prevent data from being copied over an allowed network path or exposed through a forwarded credential. Pair read-only input with egress controls, credential minimization, and an isolated writable output area.

Do I need KVM to use gVisor?
gVisor’s defining layer is its userspace application kernel and the runsc OCI runtime, not a requirement that every workload run as a traditional KVM microVM. Confirm the runtime’s supported platform and configuration for your deployment rather than assuming that one isolation architecture is interchangeable with another.
What is the safest way to let an agent use private package registries?
Use a narrowly scoped, short-lived token through a credential proxy or equivalent mechanism, allow only the registry destinations required for the task, and prevent the token from being written into images, logs, or the repository. Revoke it when the run ends.
