Titanfall 2 is the best next game if what you miss is a tightly directed, cinematic campaign with fast gunplay. Choose Battlefield 6 for modern combat on larger, destructible maps; Battlefield 1 or Hell Let Loose for the atmosphere of the original World War II titles; and Delta Force if you want a free download. The right choice depends on whether you want a campaign, arcade multiplayer, historical warfare, or a no-cost live-service game.

Which part of classic Call of Duty do you want back?
“Classic Call of Duty” covers several different experiences: the 2003 World War II games, the grounded Modern Warfare campaigns, and the quick, respawn-heavy multiplayer that followed. Pick the feature you miss before choosing a title.
- Cinematic campaign: Titanfall 2, Wolfenstein: The New Order, Medal of Honor (2010), or Halo.
- Original World War II atmosphere: Battlefield 1, Hell Let Loose, or Enlisted.
- Modern military gunplay: Battlefield 6, Battlefield 4, Insurgency: Sandstorm, or Delta Force.
- Arcade multiplayer and “one more match” energy: THE FINALS, Halo Infinite, Siege X, Apex Legends, or the newer Call of Duty releases.
Call of Duty began as a gritty World War II shooter in 2003 and has since moved through modern war, jetpacks, specialist abilities and live-service systems. That history explains why no single alternative feels identical: each recommendation preserves a different part of the formula.

1. Titanfall 2 — the closest creative successor
Respawn was founded by creators of the original Call of Duty, and its campaign carries that lineage into a more mobile science-fiction setting. You play pilot Jack Cooper alongside the Titan BT-7274, moving from conventional firefights to wall-running, double jumps and battles in which you directly pilot a giant machine.
Its campaign is short and deliberately paced, with set pieces that continually change how you move and fight rather than repeating the same corridor battle. Multiplayer keeps the Call of Duty rhythm but adds vertical traversal and player-controlled Titans. GamesLike founder Alex Burlis called it the best first click for players who want a focused campaign and still care about fast multiplayer; VGTimes described it as the “best shooter campaign everyone skipped.”
Steam data cited by GamesLike showed 96% positive reviews from about 289,000 reviews on 5 September 2026. GameRant, citing OpenCritic, reported an 87/100 Top Critic Average and 94% Critics Recommendation. VeloGamer rated it 9.2/10 in 2026. A practical caveat is authentication trouble reported on some newer CPUs; community Northstar servers are the usual multiplayer workaround. The campaign remains the reason to buy it even if you never use community servers.

2. Wolfenstein: The New Order — cinematic, single-player and unapologetically dark
MachineGames’ 2014 shooter uses the same broad structure that made Modern Warfare campaigns memorable: brisk missions, scripted spectacle and a personal story between set pieces. Its alternate 1960s timeline assumes Nazi Germany won World War II, so the tone is harsher and more satirical than Call of Duty.
You can approach encounters stealthily, dual-wield weapons or switch between methods as the level demands. The campaign is complete without online modes, making it a good choice when you want to avoid matchmaking and seasonal progression. The Old Blood and The New Colossus continue the story; VeloGamer’s 2026 campaign recommendation was Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus.
3. Medal of Honor (2010) — a compact modern-war campaign
The 2010 Medal of Honor reboot follows Tier 1 operators in Afghanistan and draws on Operation Anaconda. Its grounded setting and emphasis on small-unit missions make it a natural bridge from Call of Duty 4 and Modern Warfare 2.
The online component shut down years ago, so this is a campaign purchase rather than a multiplayer platform. GameRant’s Evan Regan called it a useful palette cleanser between annual releases and highlighted its gunplay and sound design. Treat it as a self-contained historical snapshot of the early-2010s military-shooter style, not as a current live-service game.

Set during Operation Market Garden in 1944, Hell’s Highway asks you to suppress German positions, direct your squad and flank rather than simply outshoot every enemy. That suppress-and-move structure gives it a different texture from Call of Duty while preserving the mission-to-mission campaign flow.
The online mode is no longer active, but the campaign remains a focused, one-sitting-style World War II journey. Choose it when tactical fireteam decisions matter more to you than weapon unlocks or competitive matchmaking.

5. Halo: The Master Chief Collection and Halo: Campaign Evolved
The Master Chief Collection bundles six campaigns. VGTimes counts 67 campaign missions and more than 100 multiplayer maps, with PC and Xbox crossplay. Its science-fiction weapons, vehicles and shield system are not military realism, but the mission variety and readable arena design make it a strong substitute for classic campaign pacing.
Halo: Campaign Evolved, a remake of Combat Evolved in Unreal Engine 5, released on 28 July 2026 for Xbox, PC and PlayStation 5. It is the better starting point if you want the original Halo story with a current presentation rather than a large historical bundle.
6. Sniper Elite 5 — when stealth sniping was your favorite CoD mission
Sniper Elite 5 offers a World War II campaign built around reconnaissance, suppressed shots, traps and long sightlines. Its co-op campaign lets two players plan and execute missions together, so it works both as a solo alternative and as a slower partner game.
GameSpot and WikiHow identify it as the natural choice for players whose favorite Call of Duty moments involved stealth sniping. Sniper Elite: Resistance is another accessible entry if you prefer a newer standalone story.
Which games recreate the original World War II feeling?
Battlefield 1 is the best cinematic option, Hell Let Loose is the most demanding simulation, and Enlisted is the free entry point. They cover different interpretations of historical warfare, so the choice is mainly about pace and realism.
Battlefield 1 — the blockbuster historical campaign
Battlefield 1 moves to World War I, replacing modern loadouts with cavalry, early tanks, flamethrowers and poison gas. Its six standalone War Stories let you sample different fronts and protagonists without committing to one long character arc. FanboyDestroy called it arguably Battlefield’s strongest solo offering, while GameSpot continued recommending it in 2025 for a traditional military feel.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsOperations and 64-player multiplayer provide the large battles that early Call of Duty never attempted. Behemoths—including airships, armored trains and dreadnoughts—create visible objectives that can swing a match. Pick Battlefield 1 when you want historical atmosphere with cinematic production rather than strict simulation.
Hell Let Loose — 50v50 World War II with logistics
Hell Let Loose uses historical maps from Normandy to Stalingrad and organizes matches around commanders, officers, supply lines and garrisons. A squad can lose a battle because nobody built a spawn point or moved supplies, not because the team had fewer weapon unlocks.
WikiHow specifically recommends it to die-hard fans of old-school Call of Duty. The trade-off is pace: communication, reconnaissance and travel matter, and a single life can take longer to replace than in an arcade shooter. GameSpot reported Xbox Game Pass availability on 16 May 2025; check the current catalog before subscribing. Physical PlayStation 5 editions have also been listed by retailers.

It reached Steam in 2024. GameRant described it as a more expansive version of World at War, while VGTimes lists it among the strongest free alternatives. Expect progression and a live-service structure rather than a finite campaign.
Other period-war options
- Rising Storm 2: Vietnam: 64-player asymmetric combat between U.S. forces and the Viet Cong.
- Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad: Tripwire’s slower, lethal infantry battles.
- Verdun and Tannenberg: trench-focused World War I games.
- Day of Defeat: Source: a 2005 team shooter with no unlock grind.
What is the best modern-military alternative to Call of Duty 4?
Battlefield 6 is the closest broad replacement for modern weapons, cinematic presentation and competitive multiplayer. Choose Insurgency: Sandstorm for heavier rifle handling, Battlefield 4 for older-school large maps, and Delta Force when you want those ideas without an upfront purchase.
Battlefield 6 — bigger maps and total destruction
Released on 10 October 2025 for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series, Battlefield 6 combines a modern campaign with Conquest and other large-scale modes. VGTimes described it as the closest game in spirit to Call of Duty: the same cinematic sweep and modern weapons, but with bigger maps and total destruction. Skyscrapers can collapse, changing routes and sightlines during a match.
The campaign exists, but multiplayer is the main reason to choose it. REDSEC, a free battle-royale mode in the same universe, adds a no-cost way to sample the gunplay. FanboyDestroy called it the closest match to Call of Duty’s feel; GameRant reported that it was the best-selling video game in the U.S. in 2025, attributing that figure to its own coverage. Launch reports also noted balance problems and cheater concerns, both of which can change with updates.

Battlefield 4 — install it for multiplayer, not the story
Battlefield 4 remains a PC favorite because of 64-player Conquest, Rush and Levolution events that alter buildings and routes. Its campaign is commonly regarded as forgettable; the multiplayer sandbox is the reason to return.
It is a good fit if you want the Modern Warfare-era setting but prefer vehicles, squads and objective pushes over short three-lane maps.
Insurgency: Sandstorm — modern rifles with almost no arcade padding
Insurgency: Sandstorm removes the minimap and enemy markers and makes one or two bullets potentially decisive. GamesLike recommends it when firearm weight matters more than movement speed.
GamesLike cited 85% positive Steam reviews from about 134,000 reviews in 2026. GameRant, citing OpenCritic, reported a 79/100 Top Critic Average and 61% Critics Recommendation. Those figures describe a more demanding, less forgiving game than Call of Duty, so expect to learn sound cues, angles and objective timing before matches feel comfortable.

Ready or Not — deliberate co-op room clearing
Ready or Not places you in the fictional city of Los Sueños as a SWAT operator. Rules of engagement, suspect identification and coordinated entry replace kill streaks. VGTimes describes co-op for up to five players, while Ranker’s captured listing describes teams of up to eight; check the current mode limits for your platform.
It is the right choice when you want modern equipment and teamwork but are willing to trade sprinting and instant respawns for careful room clearing.
Delta Force — the strongest free modern option
Team Jade, the studio behind Call of Duty: Mobile, launched Delta Force on PC on 24 November 2024. Its Warfare mode scales toward Battlefield-sized battles, Operations provides extraction gameplay, and a co-op campaign draws on the 1993 Mogadishu operation alongside a fictional 2035 conflict.
GameSpot compares Warfare’s larger maps with Ground War and Operations with DMZ-style extraction. VGTimes calls it the best free answer to Call of Duty and Battlefield at once. It is the first download to try if you want modern weapons, vehicles and several distinct modes without buying a complete game.

For fast objective play, start with THE FINALS or Halo Infinite multiplayer. For round-based tactics, choose Siege X, Counter-Strike 2 or Valorant. For a Warzone-style battle royale, choose Apex Legends for movement or PUBG for a grittier pace.
THE FINALS — destruction as the objective
Embark’s free shooter builds matches around a televised game show. Cashout teams carry objectives through arenas that can be demolished, opened or reshaped. VGTimes notes that Embark includes former DICE developers, which helps explain the emphasis on environmental destruction.
It feels familiar to Call of Duty in match length and weapon readability but rewards creative routes and coordinated objective play more than kill/death ratios.
Rainbow Six Siege X — Search and Destroy’s tactical descendant
Siege X launched on 10 June 2025. Its core modes are free, while the full operator roster and ranked access require a paid tier. Dual Front adds a 6v6 mode, but the closest Call of Duty comparison remains the one-life, attack-versus-defense structure associated with Search and Destroy.
Pick it when you want information, utility and sound discipline to matter more than movement speed.

- PUBG: a slower, harsher battle royale with less ability-driven combat.

Deep Rock Galactic and Left 4 Dead 2 — alternatives to Zombies nights
Deep Rock Galactic replaces military fiction with a four-player sci-fi mining crew. Its missions have clear objectives and an ending, making it a strong co-op substitute when you want teamwork without a permanent battle pass. GamesLike cited 97% positive Steam reviews from about 381,000 reviews, and VeloGamer rated it 9.1/10 as a co-op pick.
Left 4 Dead 2 is the simpler budget choice for four-player campaigns against infected hordes. Sniper Elite 5 also provides a co-op campaign if you prefer historical stealth to science-fiction mining.
Staying with Call of Duty is still a valid answer
If you specifically want the established movement, weapon handling and Zombies ecosystem, later entries remain the most direct route. Ranker’s post-Modern Warfare 4 list places Modern Warfare III and Black Ops 6 near the top. VeloGamer rated Black Ops 6’s arcade multiplayer 8.5/10, and Ranker reports that its four-year development cycle was the longest in Call of Duty history.
Which free games like Call of Duty can you download tonight?
Start with Delta Force for modern combined-arms combat, Enlisted for World War II squads, THE FINALS for destruction-driven objectives, or Halo Infinite multiplayer for arena shooting. Siege X core modes, PlanetSide 2 and Battlefield 6 REDSEC are additional free choices listed by VGTimes.
Free does not mean frictionless: these games use ongoing updates, unlock systems or optional purchases. If you want a complete experience with no seasonal progression, buy Titanfall 2, Wolfenstein, Battlefield 1 or Sniper Elite 5 instead.
How were these recommendations chosen?
The ranking separates the parts of Call of Duty that players commonly miss instead of treating every shooter as interchangeable. The criteria are:
- Campaign completeness: whether the game offers a substantial, self-contained story.
- Multiplayer pace: arcade respawns and quick time-to-kill versus deliberate, lethal engagements.
- Setting: historical, modern or science-fiction warfare.
- Scale: intimate fireteams, arena matches or vehicle-heavy battles.
- Price model: paid complete games versus free-to-play services.
- Current availability: whether the cited source identifies an active PC or console release, with older online modes clearly marked as shut down.
Physical editions and subscription availability
Retail listings noted for this group include Titanfall 2 Deluxe Edition on Xbox One, a Battlefield 1 and Titanfall 2 bundle, Battlefield 6 Standard Edition for PlayStation 5, and a Hell Let Loose PlayStation 5 Deluxe edition. Stock and compatibility change, so verify the exact console generation before ordering.
GameSpot reported Hell Let Loose in Xbox Game Pass on 16 May 2025. Subscription catalogs are temporary; check the current listing rather than assuming that availability remains unchanged.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which game is most similar to Call of Duty’s campaign structure?
Titanfall 2 is the closest match in mission momentum, cinematic pacing and responsive gunplay, while Medal of Honor (2010) is the closer match in modern military setting. Titanfall 2 adds wall-running and Titans, so it is a successor in design lineage rather than a realistic clone.
What is the best free game like Call of Duty with more than one mode?
Delta Force offers large-scale Warfare matches, extraction in Operations and a co-op campaign in one free package. Enlisted is the better free choice if your priority is World War II rather than modern weapons.
Can I play a classic-style shooter without an active online community?
Yes. Titanfall 2, Wolfenstein: The New Order, Brothers in Arms: Hell’s Highway and Sniper Elite 5 all provide complete campaigns without depending on a live multiplayer population. Medal of Honor (2010) is also playable as an offline story even though its servers are closed.
Which alternative has the most realistic team communication?
Hell Let Loose demands the most coordination because commanders, supplies and garrisons determine where squads can fight. Insurgency: Sandstorm is a better choice if you want that seriousness in smaller modern-firearm matches rather than a 50v50 World War II battlefield.
