A studio layoff is both an income emergency and a job-search problem. Handle them in parallel: secure final-pay and benefits information, contact the unemployment program for the state where you worked if you are in the United States, compare health-coverage routes, and calculate how long your cash can last. Then run a narrow search built around your discipline, level, shipped work, location, work authorization and the portfolio material you are allowed to show. A few legible work samples, targeted conversations and carefully matched applications are more useful than an indiscriminate application-count race. Contract and adjacent-industry roles can be sensible parts of the plan rather than evidence that your games career has failed.
What should I do in the first few days after a studio layoff?
Stabilize paperwork, benefits and cash flow before changing your résumé or starting a mass application campaign. The exact deadlines and entitlements depend on your location, employment agreement and benefit plan, so treat your separation documents as the starting point rather than assuming a universal rule.
Collect and check the separation documents
- Save the layoff notice, separation agreement, severance terms, final-pay statement, unused-leave information, equity documents and any benefits notices in a personal, secure location.
- Confirm your last day, the pay period covered by the final check, deductions, commission or bonus treatment, and whether any severance is conditional on signing a release.
- Ask human resources in writing where to direct questions after your company account closes. Keep copies of correspondence and note the dates of every request.
- Do not take source code, internal builds, unreleased assets, customer data or confidential design documents. A former employer’s ownership and confidentiality terms still matter after the layoff.
Apply or inquire about unemployment promptly where applicable
In the United States, contact the unemployment-insurance program for the state where you performed the work as soon as you can. Eligibility, filing windows, weekly certifications and administration vary by state; the U.S. Department of Labor’s unemployment-insurance overview is a starting point, not a determination of your claim: dol.gov/general/topic/unemployment-insurance. Have your employer details, dates, wages and separation explanation ready, and continue any required weekly certifications even while interviewing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf you worked outside the United States, use the relevant national or regional employment agency. Do not assume that a U.S. process, a severance practice or a benefit deadline applies in another country.

Compare health coverage before the employer plan ends
For U.S. workers, compare continuation coverage such as COBRA with a spouse’s plan, Marketplace coverage and any public option for which you may qualify. The cheapest monthly premium is not necessarily the cheapest choice after deductibles, prescriptions, provider networks and employer contributions are considered. The Department of Labor’s health-benefits guidance and your plan administrator can explain election notices and dates; neither this article nor a general benefits page can select the right plan for your household: dol.gov/general/topic/health-plans.
Calculate a personal runway
List cash, severance, unemployment payments you may receive, recurring bills, debt minimums, insurance premiums and one-time costs such as moving or equipment. Make a conservative monthly budget and mark the date on which savings would run out. That date determines whether you can hold out for a specific senior role, accept a short contract, reduce expenses or pursue an adjacent role sooner.
How difficult is the game-development job market right now?
Industry survey data shows substantial disruption, but it is a description of respondents rather than a forecast for one developer. The 2026 GDC Festival of Gaming survey included more than 2,300 game-industry professionals and reported a stated margin of error of plus or minus three percentage points. Its redesign means direct year-over-year comparisons are unreliable.
- Twenty-eight percent of respondents said they had been laid off in the preceding two years; the figure was 33% among U.S. respondents.
- Among respondents who had experienced a layoff, 48% had not yet found another job. The denominator is laid-off respondents, not all workers.
- Forty-two percent named Unreal Engine as their primary engine and 30% named Unity. Those are respondent-use shares, not counts of vacancies or evidence that one engine is hiring more in your city.
The figures appear in the GDC 2026 State of the Game Industry report. Use them to set expectations and protect your runway, not to estimate your personal probability of employment.
A 2025 GDC job-search question illustrates why application volume needs context: 40% of still-unemployed respondents to that question had sent at least 100 applications, but only 50 people answered it. That small subgroup does not establish that 100 applications are necessary or effective. In the same year’s survey of U.S.-based industry professionals, 25% of people who found work after a layoff reported a pay decrease of at least 10%; that is a historical survey result, not a current salary quote.
How do I choose the right roles to target?
Start with a specific lane and a credible level, then add constraints. “Game developer” is too broad for a résumé, portfolio or networking request to communicate a fit.
Name the discipline and level
Write a primary target such as gameplay engineer, technical artist, systems designer, producer, user-interface designer, tools programmer or quality-assurance lead. Add the level you can defend with shipped scope, decision-making and mentoring: junior, mid-level, senior, lead or director. If your previous title was inflated or unusually narrow, describe the work and scope as well as the title.

Describe your evidence
- List shipped titles, platforms and release stage where disclosure is permitted.
- Identify systems you owned or materially changed, such as combat logic, build pipelines, animation tools, monetization features, accessibility work or test automation.
- Record the technologies you can discuss precisely, including engine, language, source-control workflow, profiling tools and production methods.
- Separate individual contribution from team achievement. A hiring manager should be able to tell what you personally designed, implemented, directed or fixed.
Set practical constraints early
Write down acceptable locations, remote or hybrid requirements, relocation ability, time-zone limits, salary floor, contract length, travel expectations and work-authorization status. A role that looks ideal but cannot employ you in your jurisdiction is not an active lead. Keep a primary games lane and, if your runway requires it, a parallel lane for contract production, software tools, simulation, visualization, education or another adjacent field where your skills transfer.
How should I build a portfolio after a layoff?
Build evidence, not a giant reel. CareerOneStop defines a portfolio as “A portfolio is a collection of work samples that shows your skills and qualifications.” Its guidance supports a website or PDF portfolio and explains how to describe work samples: CareerOneStop portfolio guidance.
Choose a small set of strong samples
Select a few pieces that match the roles you want. For each sample, state the problem, your personal responsibility, the tools or methods used, the constraints, and a verifiable outcome such as a shipped feature, reduced build time, resolved defect class or improved player experience. A short annotated video, diagram, code excerpt or before-and-after explanation can communicate more than an undifferentiated reel.
Make the contribution legible
Label team work honestly. Use phrases such as “I implemented the runtime system and collaborated with design on tuning,” rather than implying sole authorship of a project created by a large team. If a sample contains work from several disciplines, identify the boundary of your contribution and link to a public release, talk or documentation when permission allows.
Respect ownership and confidentiality
Ask for written permission before showing unreleased or employer-owned material. When permission is unavailable, omit the asset or create a clean-room demonstration that uses your own code and art without copying internal files, proprietary data or confidential mechanics. You can still explain the challenge, your decisions and the result at a high level.
Make the link easy to use
- Put one accessible portfolio URL near the top of your résumé and in your professional profile.
- Use descriptive project titles, captions and contact information; do not force a reviewer to create an account or download an obscure format.
- Test that videos, PDFs and screenshots load without workplace credentials. A concise PDF is a valid fallback when a full site is impractical.
- Keep a private version for approved confidential material and a public version containing only cleared work.
An optional paper interview portfolio can use a loose-leaf binder and page protectors, but a digital portfolio or PDF is sufficient for many applications. A presentation binder with sheet protectors is an accessory for an in-person conversation, not a substitute for clear work samples.
How do I network and apply without wasting the search?
Use deliberate outreach and role matching. Application volume alone does not demonstrate fit, and no survey figure proves that a particular networking tactic guarantees a referral.

Reconnect with people who can understand your work
Contact former teammates, producers, technical partners, recruiters you trust and professional-community contacts. Give each person a short description of your target lane, level, location and availability, then ask whether they know of a suitable opening or a person you should speak with. Make the request easy to answer; do not demand a referral or send a generic mass message.

Tailor each application to the actual role
Match the résumé’s first bullets and portfolio samples to the posting’s core responsibilities. If the role emphasizes tools, lead with tools work; if it emphasizes live operations, show relevant production decisions and support experience. Keep a record of the posting URL, contact, date, version of materials, follow-up date and response.
Use a simple search tracker
| Field | What to record |
|---|---|
| Role and studio | Exact title, discipline, level and location |
| Eligibility | Remote policy, relocation, time zone and work authorization |
| Evidence sent | Résumé version, portfolio samples and any requested task |
| People | Recruiter, hiring contact, former colleague or introduction source |
| Next action | Follow-up date, interview preparation or a reason to close the lead |
Review the tracker weekly. If responses are absent, change one variable at a time: target level, résumé evidence, portfolio clarity, geography or the kinds of roles you are including. Do not conclude that you need to send hundreds more applications simply because one small survey subgroup reported doing so.
Should I retrain for Unreal or Unity?
Choose training from the roles you can identify, not from an engine-use percentage alone. The 2026 GDC survey reported 42% of respondents using Unreal Engine as their primary engine and 30% using Unity, but those shares measure respondents’ current use, not job advertisements, local demand or hiring plans.
Read current postings in your target discipline and region. Look for repeated requirements such as engine version, C++ or C# depth, rendering, networking, tools, build systems, technical art, console certification or live-service operations. If the postings point to a gap, build a small permitted sample that demonstrates the missing skill and explain what you learned. Avoid an expensive, open-ended retraining project when a focused work sample or adjacent role would answer the same hiring question.

Compare the offer’s practical value rather than treating “games” as automatically superior. The right choice depends on runway, benefits, authorization, skill fit and the kind of career evidence you need next.
| Decision axis | Games studio role | Contract or freelance role | Adjacent-industry role |
|---|---|---|---|
| Net pay and benefits | Check salary, bonus terms, health coverage, retirement and paid leave together. | Price unpaid gaps, taxes, equipment, insurance and the possibility of no benefits. | Compare total compensation and whether benefits begin immediately or after a waiting period. |
| Duration and stability | Ask about funding stage, project horizon, probation and layoff history where the employer will answer. | Confirm end date, renewal language, payment schedule and who owns deliverables. | Check whether the role is permanent, project-based or dependent on a single client. |
| Skills fit | Match the team’s actual stack and responsibilities to your strongest evidence. | Prefer scopes that produce a clear, permissioned work sample and realistic workload. | Identify which skills transfer back to games or broaden your technical options. |
| Location and authorization | Verify hiring geography, remote rules, relocation support and sponsorship before late-stage interviews. | Confirm whether the client can legally engage you where you live and how invoices are handled. | Check the employer’s authorization policy and any regulated-data or residency limits. |
| Long-term relevance | Evaluate mentorship, shipped scope, ownership and the chance to maintain useful skills. | Assess whether several short engagements build a coherent specialty rather than scattered samples. | Document transferable outcomes so the move is a deliberate expansion, not an unexplained detour. |
Use the same questions for every option: What will I take home after required costs? What coverage do I receive? How long is the commitment? Can I legally do the work? Which skills and evidence will I have six months from now?

How do geography and work authorization change the search?
Put these constraints in the first conversation, not after an offer. “Remote” may mean remote within one country, a permitted list of states or time zones, or occasional travel to a particular office. Ask where the employing entity is located, whether payroll or contractor status is possible in your jurisdiction, and whether sponsorship is available for the exact role and level.
If relocation is possible, calculate moving costs and the time without income. If it is not, search by eligible location and filter out postings that quietly require local employment. Keep documentation of visa expiration dates, renewal steps and any limits on freelance or contract work, and obtain qualified legal advice for an individual immigration question.
What support can I use while searching?
U.S. Rapid Response programs and American Job Centers may offer résumé help, interview preparation, counseling and training support. Availability differs by state and locality, so verify the current office and services through official government channels. These resources can complement, not replace, your own portfolio and targeted outreach.
CareerOneStop also provides guidance on describing work samples and presenting a website or PDF portfolio. Its advice is general career guidance, so adapt it to your discipline, confidentiality obligations and the specific posting.
What should my first 30 days look like?
- Days 1–3: Save documents, confirm final pay and benefits contacts, start any applicable unemployment process, compare coverage options and calculate your runway.
- Days 4–7: Write your target lane, level, constraints and two-sentence professional summary. List shipped work and mark which samples are cleared for public use.
- Week 2: Publish or refresh a concise portfolio, prepare a role-specific résumé, and contact a small group of former teammates and professional connections.
- Week 3: Apply to roles that meet your discipline, location and authorization requirements. Tailor the evidence, log every application and prepare concise stories about ownership, trade-offs and outcomes.
- Week 4: Review response patterns, improve the weakest evidence, widen to a carefully chosen contract or adjacent lane if runway requires it, and verify new postings rather than relying on old saved links.
Repeat the cycle weekly. Protect time for applications, conversations, portfolio work, benefits administration and recovery; a search that consumes every waking hour is difficult to sustain.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What mistakes commonly slow down a post-layoff search?
- Waiting on benefits paperwork: Missing a notice or filing window can create avoidable financial pressure. Start with the agency and plan administrator for your jurisdiction.
- Applying to every title: A résumé that claims design, engineering, production and art equally can make none of the claims credible. Lead with one lane and explain adjacent strengths.
- Showing confidential work: A spectacular unreleased demo is not worth violating an agreement. Replace it with cleared material or a new demonstration.
- Claiming team results as individual work: Interviewers need an accurate boundary around your decisions and deliverables.
- Retraining from a headline statistic: Engine-use shares are not vacancy data. Read current postings and build the smallest sample that addresses a repeated requirement.
- Ignoring total compensation: Compare net pay, premiums, deductibles, leave, retirement contributions, taxes, equipment and unpaid gaps.
- Letting the tracker go stale: Recheck location, authorization, closing dates and project status before investing time in an application.
How do I explain the layoff in an interview?
Use a factual, brief explanation: the studio eliminated your role or team, the employment ended on a specific date, and you are now targeting a defined discipline. Move quickly to what you delivered, what you can show, and why the new role fits. Do not speculate about confidential internal decisions or criticize former colleagues.

Is taking a contract or adjacent job a step backward?
Not necessarily. Judge it by the skills, income, benefits, stability and evidence it provides, then state the connection clearly in your résumé. A contract can preserve cash flow and broaden your network; an adjacent role can deepen tools, simulation, visualization, software or production skills that remain useful when a suitable games opening appears.

How many portfolio pieces should I include?
There is no universal count. Include enough examples to prove the requirements of your target role, then remove work that does not add a distinct skill, responsibility or outcome. A reviewer should understand your contribution and open the links quickly without sorting through a complete career archive.
What if my best work is still covered by a nondisclosure agreement?
Describe the problem, your decisions and the measurable or observable result without revealing protected code, assets, names or data. Ask the former employer whether a redacted screenshot, public talk, generic diagram or sanitized recreation is permitted; if not, leave it out and use an independently created sample to demonstrate the same capability.
How do I decide whether to accept an offer quickly?
Compare the written terms against your runway and the decision axes above, including benefits start dates, payment timing, termination language, location and authorization. Ask for time to review unfamiliar clauses and obtain qualified legal or financial advice when the consequences are significant. A fast decision is useful only when it is informed.

Protect income and coverage first, then make your search specific: one primary discipline and level, a few permissioned samples that show your own contribution, and outreach tied to real roles. That approach keeps the search focused without pretending that one engine, one title or one application count can solve every layoff.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can unemployment benefits continue while I take a short contract?
Possibly, but reporting rules differ by jurisdiction and may reduce or end payments when you earn income. Ask the agency handling your claim how to report contract dates, gross earnings and hours before accepting the work, and keep the written answer.
Should I disclose my previous salary when applying after a layoff?
You can redirect the conversation toward the role’s range, total compensation and your target responsibilities. If a form requires a figure, check local disclosure rules and distinguish base pay from bonuses, equity and benefits rather than presenting one number as the whole package.
How can I verify that a remote game job is legitimate?
Confirm the employing entity, recruiter identity, written job description, interview contacts and payment terms through independently verifiable channels. Never send money, cryptocurrency, identity documents beyond what a legitimate hiring process requires, or proprietary work as an unpaid “test” without clear terms.
What should I do if I cannot afford health coverage between jobs?
Contact the plan administrator, Marketplace or relevant public program immediately to ask about eligibility, effective dates and lower-cost alternatives. Compare the full out-of-pocket exposure, not only the premium, and seek qualified benefits advice for your household’s circumstances.
