If a Steam game is delayed, the most reliable substitute is not another title with the same broad genre label. Start on the delayed game’s store page, identify its defining mechanic or subgenre, then add one or two traits that shape the experience—such as viewpoint, mood, theme, or co-op support. Search Steam with that combination, exclude deal-breakers, and verify every finalist’s current release state and features before spending money.
This approach finds playable stand-ins without pretending that Steam tags prove two games feel identical. Tags generate candidates; descriptions, player-mode details, compatibility information, and availability decide which one is worth your waiting time.
What should you preserve from the delayed game?
Preserve the part of the game you are actually waiting for, not every label visible on its store page. A useful profile starts with one narrow gameplay identity and then adds the traits that make that identity appealing to you.
Start with a specific mechanic or subgenre
Broad labels such as Action, Adventure, or Platformer describe thousands of games. A narrower tag gives Steam a more useful signal. Valve’s own tag taxonomy distinguishes a specific subgenre such as Precision Platformer from the much wider Platformer and Action categories. If the delayed game’s appeal is precise movement, deck construction, base management, stealth, or another distinctive loop, make that the first term in your profile.

Add the traits that change how the game feels
Choose one or two additional dimensions rather than copying the entire tag cloud. Viewpoint can separate a first-person horror game from a top-down one. Mood can distinguish a tense survival experience from a relaxed management game. Theme, visual style, player mode, and session length can also matter more than a generic genre label.
- Gameplay identity: the mechanic or narrow subgenre you refuse to lose.
- Perspective: first-person, third-person, side-scrolling, top-down, or another viewpoint.
- Mood or theme: atmospheric, comedic, historical, science-fiction, horror, cozy, and so on.
- Player support: solo, local co-op, online co-op, competitive multiplayer, or a preference for playing alone.
Write the profile in plain language before searching. For example, you might decide that the essential combination is a roguelite deckbuilder with solo play, or a resource-management game with online co-op. These are search starting points, not promises that every matching result will be a close replacement.
Why are combinations better than a single popular tag?
Overlapping tags can narrow a search more effectively than one famous label. Valve says Steam uses a game’s top 20 tags in some recommendation and visibility mechanisms, and that less-frequently used tags can carry more similarity weight than very common ones.

Valve’s May 18, 2026 store-tag update reported more than 98,000 games tagged Singleplayer—approximately 62 percent of Steam’s games at the time of publication. That figure is historical rather than a live November 2026 total, but it illustrates why Singleplayer alone cannot identify a close substitute.
Use a pair or trio that describes the intersection you want. Illustrative searches from Steam’s tag vocabulary include Deckbuilding + Roguelite, Resource Management + Co-op, and Survival Horror + First-Person. The combination is doing the filtering work; the examples do not endorse any particular result.
Do not assume that a rarer tag is automatically accurate. Steam tags can be added by developers, eligible players, and moderators, and Valve acknowledges that some applications are inaccurate. Treat a combination as a discovery signal that needs confirmation on the candidate’s current store page.
How do you search Steam for a tag combination?
Build the search in stages: include what you want, exclude what would make a game unsuitable, then narrow the results with Steam’s other filters. Interface wording and placement can change, so use the current controls you see rather than relying on an old screenshot.

- Enter the defining tag in Steam Search. Use the tag that represents the central loop, not merely the setting or art style.
- Add a second desired tag. Choose the trait that separates your ideal substitute from the rest of that subgenre, such as a viewpoint, player mode, or mood.
- Exclude a deal-breaker. Steam documents include and exclude tag controls. Remove a mode, perspective, or theme you know you will not play instead of opening dozens of unsuitable pages.
- Apply feature filters. Steam’s search description identifies filters for features, operating system, and language. Use them when controller support, a particular operating system, or language availability is a requirement.
- Hide titles you already own or have ignored when useful. These controls can keep the candidate list focused, but do not hide a game merely because you have not investigated it yet.
Valve says requested tags receive heavier relevance weighting in search. That makes the order of your terms less important than choosing terms that describe the experience you want, but it does not turn the results into a guaranteed ranking of quality.

Use exclusions deliberately
Exclusions are most useful for hard constraints. If you want solo play, exclude multiplayer-heavy results only when the tag or feature clearly indicates that they require other players. If you dislike first-person games, exclude that viewpoint rather than removing every game with a horror or shooter tag. An overly broad exclusion can eliminate unusual games that would otherwise fit.
How should you use Steam’s More Like This section?
More Like This is a source of candidates, not a verdict that one title is a one-to-one replacement. Compare its suggestions with the results from your manual tag search.
Valve says a game’s top tags help determine similarity in this area, while also cautioning that a strictly tag-driven comparison is not a direct description of the More Like This algorithm. Do not look for a documented numerical similarity score or assume that the first suggestion preserves the mechanic you care about most.

- Open More Like This on the delayed game’s page.
- Record only the titles that appear to share your essential mechanic or subgenre.
- Run a separate search using your chosen tag combination.
- Keep candidates that appear in either list, then verify them using the same checklist.
This two-source approach reduces the risk of following one misleading tag. More Like This can surface a game you would not have found manually; the filtered search makes your priorities explicit.
How do you make sure a candidate is playable now?
Availability must be checked on each candidate’s current store page. A title can match your tags and still be unreleased, in Early Access, unavailable for your operating system, or missing the player mode you need.
Check the release state
Confirm whether the game is released, in Early Access, or unreleased. If the goal is to fill time during a delay, an unreleased result is not a practical substitute. Early Access may be playable today, but its content, features, and stability can change; treat that as a deliberate trade-off rather than equivalent availability.
Check platform, language, and input support
Verify the operating system and language options shown on the candidate’s page. If you plan to use a controller, inspect the listed controller support and read the game’s input notes. Steam’s Full Controller Support is a discovery filter, not proof that every controller works identically in every title.

Read the feature list and description for solo, local co-op, online co-op, or competitive requirements. A co-op tag does not tell you whether solo play is possible, and a multiplayer label does not explain whether matchmaking, private sessions, or a persistent group is required.

Can Steam’s wishlist help you filter out unreleased games?
Yes. Valve has documented wishlist controls that can filter a wishlist by an item’s top tags and hide unreleased entries. Keep the delayed game wishlisted for release updates while using those controls to focus on games that are available.
Wishlist filtering is a convenience layer, not a replacement for opening the store page. The delayed title’s tags and a candidate’s tags can change, and the current interface may use different wording from Valve’s earlier announcement. Recheck the release state and feature details before purchase.
How do you compare the final candidates?
Compare at least two real candidates against the same criteria. A structured note prevents a familiar genre label from outweighing a missing feature such as co-op or controller support.

Ignoring release state
An unreleased title can look like an ideal match and still fail the purpose of a waiting-room game. Check the current release label before adding it to your shortlist.
Using an old tag name forever
Valve’s May 2026 update described 17 tags being added and 28 removed, including renamed or merged tags. Search terms can therefore age out. If a familiar tag returns few or strange results, revisit the delayed game’s current page and try the terminology Steam now uses.
How can you keep the method current?
Repeat the verification step whenever you are ready to buy, not only when you first create the shortlist. Steam’s tag vocabulary and store metadata can change, and a game’s release state or feature set may be different weeks later.
- Open the candidate’s store page again.
- Confirm the current release label and supported operating system.
- Read the latest feature list for solo or co-op requirements.
- Check language and controller information.
- Review the description for a mechanic that the tags do not explain.
Keep the delayed game in your wishlist if you still want it, but do not let its eventual release determine whether the substitute was worthwhile. The purpose of the method is to find a good game for the present waiting period, even if it is not a permanent replacement.
Should you buy a controller for a tag-matched game?
Only consider a controller after you have chosen a game that explicitly supports the control scheme you want. Steam lists Controller as a tag and offers Full Controller Support as a discovery filter, but those labels do not establish compatibility with a particular controller model or guarantee identical layouts.
Check the candidate’s input notes and the controller support description first. If keyboard and mouse are supported and you already prefer them, buying an accessory is unnecessary. A controller is an optional convenience for a verified controller-supported choice, not part of the discovery method itself.

What can this method tell you—and what can it not?
It can identify games that share visible metadata and help you eliminate obvious mismatches before purchase. It cannot predict pacing, writing quality, difficulty curve, community behavior, or whether the moment-to-moment feel will satisfy you. Those qualities require reading the current description and, where available, consulting trustworthy independent coverage; tags alone cannot supply them.
Steam’s recommendation systems also do not promise a one-to-one replacement. Valve’s documentation explains how top tags participate in some discovery mechanisms and notes that less-common tags can be more informative, but that is a platform-level signal rather than a guarantee about your personal preferences.
How do you decide when two candidates are both imperfect?
Choose based on the trade-off you will notice most often. If the delayed game’s appeal is its core loop, favor the candidate that reproduces that loop even with a different setting. If playing with friends is the point, reliable player support outranks a closer theme. If you need something immediately, a released and compatible game outranks an unreleased title with a more exact tag match.
Write down the compromise in one sentence before buying: for example, “This keeps the deckbuilding loop but changes the setting.” A clear trade-off prevents a candidate from being judged against an imagined perfect substitute and makes it easier to keep looking if the compromise is unacceptable.
