To check your Office version on Windows, open Word or Excel and select File > Account. Under Product Information, read the product name and version details; select About Excel for the complete version, build, and whether Office is 32-bit or 64-bit. On a Mac, open Word and choose Word > About Word to see the version number and license type.
Check your Office version on Windows
- Open Word, Excel, or another Office app.
- Select File > Account. In some versions, Account appears directly. If you do not see it, select File and then Account or Help.
- Under Product Information, read the product name and any displayed version details. Microsoft says this area can show the version, build number, and installation type. See Microsoft’s instructions for identifying your Office version.
- For the full version and bitness, select About Excel. The dialog identifies the version and whether the installation is 32-bit or 64-bit.
Check your Office version on a Mac
- Open Word.
- In the macOS menu bar, choose Word > About Word.
- Read the version number and license type in the dialog. Microsoft’s example on its Office version help page shows Office 2019 for Mac; that example is not an indication of what is installed on your Mac.
Microsoft’s Office 2024 FAQ also directs Mac users to the app name in the menu bar and About, and Windows users to File > Account.
Understand the product name, version, and bitness
These details answer different questions, so do not treat one as a substitute for the others.

- Product or license name: tells you which product family or edition is installed. Microsoft describes Microsoft 365 as a subscription service and Office 2024 as a one-time purchase. Check the name and license information shown in the app to distinguish them; an app icon or version number alone does not establish the license model.
- Version and build: identify installed software release details. On Windows, look for them under Product Information or in the About dialog.
- Bitness: identifies whether a Windows installation is 32-bit or 64-bit. Find it in About Excel; Microsoft’s 32-bit and 64-bit Office guidance explains the distinction.
If Account or update controls are missing
If Account is not visible in the app, select File and look for Account or Help. A missing Update Options button is a separate issue: Microsoft says the installation may use a volume license or updates may be controlled by an organization’s Group Policy. That clue concerns update management; it does not prove which Office edition is installed. If your workplace manages updates, ask your IT administrator. See Microsoft’s Windows update instructions.

2026 support notices to interpret carefully
Support deadlines are specific to the configurations Microsoft names; they are not a general test of which Office version you have.

- 32-bit Microsoft 365 Apps on Windows Arm: Microsoft says new feature updates stopped in October 2025 and security updates will end in December 2026 for this configuration. The notice says the 64-bit edition on Windows Arm requires Windows 11. These dates do not describe every Office installation. See Microsoft’s Windows Arm support notice.
