On the US PlayStation Store, open Latest to browse recently listed games, or use Browse and search when you already know what you want. Open the individual game page before paying: confirm whether it is a PS5, PS4, or cross-generation edition, check any PlayStation Plus condition, and distinguish Add to Cart from Pre-order. After purchase, download on PS5 through Games home > Game Library > Your Collection, or on PS4 through Library > Purchased. A signed-in browser and the PlayStation App can also start a remote download when your console, account, internet, rest-mode, and automatic-download settings are ready.
This is a US-oriented guide. Store catalogs, app content, release timing, and displayed editions can vary by country, so a game visible in one region is not proof that it is sold everywhere.
How do I find new releases on the PlayStation Store?
Start with the store’s Latest page, then use Browse or the search field to narrow the results. The US storefront exposes those navigation labels, but its changing content does not establish a permanent newest-first ranking or a universal “released today” filter. Treat Latest as a discovery area, not as a guarantee that every title shown launched on the same date.
- Open the US PlayStation Store’s Latest page.
- Scroll through the current listings, or choose Browse to explore a category.
- Use search when you know a title, series, publisher, or keyword.
- Select a game to open its full product page. Do not buy from a tile alone; the product page contains the edition, platform, purchase state, and release information you need.
If a title is missing, check the spelling, search without subtitles, and look in Browse. Availability can also be regional; Sony notes that PlayStation App content and displayed titles differ by region.

What should I check on a game page before buying?
The game page is where you verify exactly what you are purchasing. Check the console platform, edition name, price or Plus condition, and the action button before entering checkout.
Confirm PS5 and PS4 compatibility
Look for the platform label and edition selector. A listing may offer a PS5 version, a PS4 version, or separate editions. Select the version that matches the console on which you intend to play; do not infer compatibility from the cover art or title alone.
Read the edition and PlayStation Plus terms
Deluxe, standard, bundle, and upgrade products can have different contents. If the page says a PlayStation Plus membership is required or presents a member price, read that condition before checkout. A subscription condition is not the same as ownership of the game without the required membership.

Add to Cart generally indicates content available to purchase now, while Pre-order identifies an unreleased product. Sony says the release date appears beneath the title in the listing. Review that date and the edition details before submitting a pre-order through Sony’s pre-order guidance.
A pre-order is not a promise of early play. Configured automatic downloads can prepare content when it becomes available, but Sony does not say that every title supports pre-loading or that any game can be played before its stated release time.

How do I download a new game on PS5?
After the transaction completes, the shortest on-console route is Games home > Game Library > Your Collection > select the game > Download. Sony says installation proceeds automatically once the download starts.
- Sign in to the PS5 with the account that bought or redeemed the game.
- From Games home, open Game Library.
- Choose Your Collection and find the title. Use the search or filtering controls if your collection is large.
- Open the game page and select Download.
- Check the download queue from the control center if you need to pause, resume, or monitor progress. Leave enough free console or M.2 storage for the installation.
If the game is a pre-order, it may remain unavailable until the release date shown on its store page. A purchase that contains both PS5 and PS4 versions can show more than one downloadable product; select the version you want to install.

On PS4, open Library > Purchased, select the game, and choose Download. The system then installs the downloaded files automatically, subject to available storage and the title’s release status.
- Sign in with the purchasing account.
- Open Library from the PS4 home screen.
- Select Purchased.
- Choose the game and select Download.
- Watch Notifications or the download list for progress and errors.
If you bought the PS5 edition only, it will not become a PS4 installation merely because the title has a PS4 release. Return to the product page and verify which edition your transaction includes.
Can I start a PlayStation download from a web browser?
Yes. In the signed-in web store, open your avatar, choose Game Library, select Purchased, choose the game, and select Download. Sony’s download guide lists the browser route and its console requirements.

For the download to start remotely, the account must be associated with the intended console: a PS5 logged in with that account, or an activated primary PS4. The console also needs an internet connection. Sony’s remote-download instructions and automatic-download settings explain that immediate starts require the console to remain connected in rest mode and automatic downloads to be configured. Without those settings, a request may wait until the console is turned on.
Can I download a PlayStation game from my phone?
The PlayStation App can shop the PS Store and send a purchased game’s download to a paired console. Pair the app with the intended PS5 or primary PS4, use the same PlayStation account, and allow the console to stay online in rest mode.
- Install and sign in to the PlayStation App with the account that owns the game.
- In the app, open Settings > Pair Console to App and complete pairing.
- Open the app’s PS Store to find a release, or open Game Library > Purchased to locate an owned title.
- Select the game and choose the available Download or Download to Console command. Sony uses both labels in its support material, so the wording can vary by app version.
- On the console, enable internet connection while in rest mode and configure automatic downloads if you want the transfer to begin immediately. The official setup details are in Sony’s PlayStation App support page and automatic-download settings guidance.
If the app cannot find the console, confirm that both devices use the same account, pairing completed, the console is powered on or in correctly configured rest mode, and the app is looking at the same regional store. Sony warns that app content and displayed games can differ by country.
What is the difference between a released game and a pre-order download?
A released game can be downloaded from your purchased library as soon as the transaction and platform entitlement are valid. A pre-order remains tied to the release date shown beneath its title; any automatic preparation occurs only when Sony makes the content available.
- Released: the listing normally offers a purchase action and the title appears in the owning account’s library after checkout.
- Pre-order: the page displays a future date and a pre-order action. Automatic downloading, where offered and configured, does not change the official release time.
- Edition check: a pre-order may include multiple platform versions or bonuses. Read the exact product description rather than assuming every edition contains both PS4 and PS5 builds.
For current release timing, use the date shown on the product page rather than an old announcement, social post, or a listing from another country’s store.

Which download method should I use?
Choose the route that matches the device you have, the game’s release state, your remote-download setup, and your free storage. The methods reach the same digital entitlement but are not interchangeable when a console is offline or a title is unreleased.

What should I do if a purchased game will not download?
Work through ownership, service, queue, and storage checks in that order. Deleting the game is not a universal fix; use it only when the title is already installed and you are intentionally reinstalling it.
- Confirm the account and transaction. Sign in with the account that completed the purchase. Check your transaction history or receipt and confirm that the product is digital, not a disc-only purchase.
- Check the release state. If the page says Pre-order, compare today’s date with the release date beneath the title. An unreleased game cannot be downloaded as a playable release.
- Check PlayStation service status. A store or download outage can prevent entitlement checks or queue progress. Retry after the service is restored.
- Inspect the queue. Pause and resume a stalled entry. This refreshes a transient transfer problem without removing the purchase.
- Check free space. Remove or move files only after confirming the installation needs more room than is available. On PS5, review storage management before choosing where the game should live.
- Use the library again. A deleted purchased PS5 game can be downloaded again from Game Library > Your Collection. Sony’s download troubleshooting guide covers additional queue and license checks.
If a title appears in the store but not in Purchased, verify the account, platform edition, and store region before attempting another purchase.

PS5 storage choices affect whether a game can launch directly. A supported internal M.2 SSD can store and launch PS5 games. USB extended storage can hold PS5 game data, but PS5 games must be copied back to the console’s internal storage or a supported M.2 SSD before they can be played. PS4 games can be played directly from supported USB extended storage; Sony states, “You can play PS4 games directly from your USB extended storage.”
Supported M.2 SSD requirements
Sony specifies a PCIe Gen4x4 M.2 NVMe drive with a Key M connector, capacity from 250 GB to 8 TB, a supported physical size, and effective heat dissipation. A sequential read speed of 5,500 MB/s or faster is recommended. M.2 SATA drives are unsupported. These are manufacturer specifications, not a guarantee that every third-party drive meeting the written figures will work, so check the drive’s dimensions and cooling solution against Sony’s M.2 SSD installation requirements.

USB extended storage limits
Use a supported USB extended-storage drive when you need capacity for an archive or PS4 library. Keep the copy-back step in mind for PS5 titles: the files can remain on USB, but the game must be moved to console or M.2 storage to launch. Sony’s USB extended-storage guide lists the supported behavior and setup requirements.
How do regional stores affect release discovery?
The steps above use the US storefront and US support pages. Sony says PlayStation App content varies by region, and a displayed title may not be available in every country. Prices, release dates, editions, age ratings, and Plus terms can therefore differ between accounts.
Use the store region associated with your account, and rely on that listing’s release date and edition information. A VPN or a different storefront does not transfer an entitlement between account regions, and this guide does not treat another country’s Latest page as evidence of US availability.

What is not part of a digital download?
A digital store purchase is an account entitlement delivered through the library. A physical game disc follows a different installation and license workflow; owning a disc does not automatically create the same downloadable purchase shown in the PlayStation Store. If you intend to download, confirm that the product page and your receipt identify a digital version.
New-release download checklist
- Open the US Store’s Latest area, Browse, or search.
- Open the complete product page.
- Verify PS5/PS4 platform, edition, Plus condition, and purchase action.
- For a pre-order, record the release date shown beneath the title.
- Buy or redeem with the account you will use on the console.
- On PS5, use Games home > Game Library > Your Collection.
- On PS4, use Library > Purchased.
- For browser or app downloads, pair or activate the correct console and configure rest-mode internet and automatic downloads.
- Check free space and the storage destination before starting a large installation.

Can I redownload a PlayStation Store game after deleting it?
Yes. Sign in with the account that owns the digital entitlement and select the title again from the console’s purchased library. Deleting the local installation removes files, not the library entitlement, although you still need enough free storage to reinstall.
Why does a game appear in the store but not in my PlayStation App library?
The app may be signed in with a different account, or the title may belong to another store region. Sony also notes that app content and displayed games vary by country, so compare the account and regional storefront before contacting support.
Will a pre-ordered game download before its release date?
Only if Sony makes pre-loading available for that particular title and your console is configured for automatic downloads. The product page’s release date remains the authority; pre-order status does not guarantee early access or pre-loading.
Can I play a PS5 game directly from a USB extended-storage drive?
No. USB extended storage can keep PS5 game data, but you must copy that data back to the PS5’s internal storage or a supported M.2 SSD to play. Supported PS4 games are the exception and can be played directly from USB extended storage.
