How does Resonance connect to Brave Exvius and earlier Final Fantasy games?
Brave Exvius knowledge is useful mainly for recognizing names and relationships. Resonance reworks season one, so an identical plot should not be expected, and the available publisher material does not establish connections to later mobile seasons.
Earlier-series heroes appear as Visions whose sanctums revisit elements of their original stories. That makes each shrine a character-focused encounter, not proof that Resonance is a direct sequel to every game represented. The safest reading is that the Vision system imports recognizable heroes as equippable echoes inside Rain’s adventure. Players avoiding all details from older games should approach shrine introductions carefully: a PlayStation Blog account describes a short hero tale, clips, and questions before a Vision is awarded, although it does not say that every shrine contains a major plot twist.
What are Visions, and who can equip them?
A Vision is an equipped character essence. It changes the wearer’s statistics and supplies magic and abilities, while its affinity and awakening systems provide longer-term progression. Each character can equip only one Vision at a time, as Square Enix states in Latest Updates Vol. 2. Equipping one therefore determines the current stat profile and the active move set; it does not erase abilities learned from another Vision.
The launch roster contains 26 obtainable Visions, according to PlayStation Blog contributor Corey Brotherson’s 2026 feature. The list mixes legacy figures such as Warrior of Light, Terra, Cloud, Shantotto, and Y’shtola with Brave Exvius originals such as Tronn. “26 Visions” is a roster count, not a claim that the traveling party has 26 permanent, independently controlled members.
When a Vision is replaced, the new Vision supplies its own current statistics and moves. Abilities learned from previous Visions can remain equipped, provided the build stays within its ability-cost limit. This distinction between the active Vision and retained learned abilities is the key to understanding why changing equipment is a build decision rather than a complete reset.

How do you unlock Visions?
There is no single universal unlock route. Sanctums of Light are the principal destinations for legacy crystals, but story rewards, optional quests, exploration, and a special challenge also contribute to the roster.

Progression has three separate layers: the Vision currently equipped, battle-earned affinity, and magicite awakening. Keeping those layers separate prevents a common misunderstanding that every form of mastery automatically transfers between characters.

How do Resonance and Espers differ in combat?
Resonance is a Vision-linked payoff during a stagger window; an Esper is a separate temporary summon. Treating them as the same system leads to incorrect expectations about duration and availability.

Exploit enemy weaknesses to reduce their stagger meters. When all opponents are staggered, the battle enters a sweeping stagger and bonus phase in which the game lets you select one equipped Vision’s Resonance. The selected effect is Vision-specific and may deliver direct damage, an area attack, or a buff. The publisher’s combat explanation is available in the official update.
Espers instead join the fight for three turns and end their appearance with a powerful finishing move. A Vision is therefore not merely a one-use summon: it is an ongoing equipment choice with statistics, abilities, affinity, awakening, and a Resonance option, while an Esper is a timed reinforcement.
How should you choose a Vision and build a party?
Start with the party member’s established role, then match the Vision and learned abilities to the enemy’s weaknesses and the encounter’s stagger demands. Four checks are more useful than chasing a single “best” Vision:
- Role: Decide whether the character is primarily dealing damage, healing, breaking stagger, or supplying support.
- Encounter: Favor damage type, status utility, or area coverage that answers the target’s weaknesses.
- Ability budget: Keep the retained learned abilities inside the cost limit instead of equipping every attractive option.
- Resonance timing: Consider what the Vision contributes when the entire enemy group is staggered, not only its normal rotation.
Brotherson’s PlayStation Blog example pairs Breaker Lasswell with healer Leah for support, or with Cloud when more offense is wanted. That illustrates role-based swapping, not a universal ranking. The same feature reports a Noctis Vision example with a 20% initial attack boost and an early Noctis mastery bonus that increases limit-burst-gauge gain by 40% when an enemy is defeated. Both figures are examples tied to that reported Vision and condition; they are not blanket bonuses for every Vision or every battle.
Can you miss a Vision permanently?
PowerPyx’s October 21 guide reports that none of the 26 Visions is permanently missable and that post-story free roam allows unfinished collections. That assurance is attributed to the guide, not presented as a separate Square Enix guarantee.

The opening premise can be enjoyed without prior Brave Exvius knowledge, but Vision sanctums are deliberately built around earlier heroes. Their short stories, clips, and question sequences may identify character history or scenes from the source games. Players who want absolutely no background details from older Final Fantasy titles should delay optional sanctum visits or look up only the unlock requirement they need.

That caution does not mean every Vision contains a major reveal, and the available descriptions do not map the spoiler level of each shrine. It simply reflects the format Square Enix and PlayStation describe: a character-focused introduction before the reward, embedded in a new Rain-led campaign.
