If FATAL FRAME II: Crimson Butterfly REMAKE will not launch, hangs on the butterfly loading screen, or shows black cutscenes, install Microsoft VP9 Video Extensions first. For Camera Obscura crashes and cutscene micro-stutters, turn off the Steam Overlay and other in-game overlays. For choppy performance, reduce Volumetric Fog and Shadows, use DLSS or FSR Quality, and target a steady 60 FPS. If a controller is not detected, test Steam Input both on and off, restart the game between changes, and try a wired XInput controller.
This guide covers the Windows/Steam version and calls out where Linux, Steam Deck, or console behavior differs. Public patch notes through Ver. 1.04.00, dated 22 June 2026, do not say that VP9, overlay crashes, or controller detection were specifically fixed.
Which fix should I try first?
Match the symptom to the likely cause before changing several settings at once. That makes it easier to identify which adjustment helped and avoids confusing a codec problem with a performance or input problem.

Before troubleshooting, confirm that the PC meets the published baseline. PCGamingWiki’s Windows requirements list Windows 11 64-bit, 16 GB of RAM, a 30 GB SSD installation, and Direct3D 12. The minimum graphics target is 720p at Best Performance and 30 FPS; the recommended target is 1080p at Standard and 30 FPS. Meeting the minimum does not mean the game will hold 60 FPS at high settings.

These are the Windows requirements mirrored by PCGamingWiki; the Steam store’s requirements page was age-gated when the information was compiled. The game uses Direct3D 12 on PC. An older Windows version or a mechanical hard drive falls outside the listed requirements.
How do I fix a game that will not launch or is stuck on the butterfly loading screen?
Install the VP9 codec before trying more disruptive fixes. The game’s pre-rendered video uses VP9, so a missing codec can cause an immediate launch failure, an indefinite butterfly loading screen, or cutscenes that render black.
- Install Microsoft VP9 Video Extensions. Find the Microsoft Store item named VP9 Video Extensions (item ID 9N4D0MSMP0PT) and install it. Restart Windows if the Store or installer requests it.
- Verify the game installation. In Steam, open Library, right-click the game, select Properties, open Installed Files, and choose Verify integrity of game files. Let the check finish before launching again.
- Update the graphics driver. Install the current driver for the graphics card from its manufacturer. If an ordinary update does not help, Magic Game World lists a clean driver reinstall using DDU as a fallback; this is a more involved step, so use it only after simpler checks.
- Retry the exact failure. Start the game and check whether it passes the loading screen or plays a cutscene. If the game starts but video remains black, confirm VP9 is installed; Magic Game World also suggests raising Model LOD for black video after the codec fix.
If Windows reports Error 0xc0000005, an access violation, Magic Game World suggests checking whether Windows Defender is blocking memory allocation and whitelisting the installation folder if appropriate. You can also try running FatalFrameII.exe as administrator and disabling fullscreen optimizations in the executable’s Windows compatibility settings. Treat these as secondary checks rather than substitutes for installing VP9.
What if the first cutscene crashes on Linux or Proton?
The Proton issue is distinct from a typical Windows codec installation problem. On 12 March 2026, Proton maintainer kisak-valve described the crash in issue 9567 as an access violation in mfmp4srcsnk.dll. Some users reported that Proton Experimental resolved the opening crash around 15 March, but later reports still described crashes tied to in-game video effects.
If you are using Linux, first try a current Proton Experimental build and restart after changing compatibility settings. One reported workaround was to enter this launch option in the game’s Steam properties: PROTON_MEDIA_USE_GST=1 GST_PLUGIN_FEATURE_RANK=protonaudioconverterbin:NONE %command%. It is a user-reported workaround, not a guaranteed fix. Some Steam Deck reports described later video-effect crashes even across Proton Experimental, Hotfix, Proton 9, and Proton-GE.
How do I stop Camera Obscura crashes and silent door-transition crashes?
Camera Obscura crashes and silent crashes during door transitions have different reported causes, so handle them separately. Start with the relevant branch below rather than applying every workaround at once.
Crash when using the Camera Obscura
- In Steam Library, right-click the game, choose Properties, open General, and turn off Enable the Steam Overlay while in-game.
- Disable other overlays, including Discord and GeForce overlays, while diagnosing the problem.
- From the title screen, open the Screen/Graphics settings and reduce Shadows to Medium. Test an encounter before changing additional options.
Magic Game World described the encounter crash as an apparent memory leak involving the Steam Overlay together with high shadow resolution. The same outlet recommends turning off the Steam Overlay to reduce cutscene micro-stutters as well. That report does not establish an official root-cause diagnosis or a guaranteed fix.

Do not confuse this crash with specific bugs in older versions. Koei Tecmo Europe’s Ver. 1.03.03 notes, dated 27 March 2026, say the patch fixed the Camera Obscura being unavailable again in Chapter Seven and a Camera Obscura motion-blur setting affecting normal motion blur. Those are separate gameplay and settings issues.
Silent crashes during door transitions
- In Steam, open the game’s Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files.
- Let Steam replace any missing or corrupted files, including localized audio files, then retry the same door transition.
- If the crash continues, install or repair the current Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributables in both x86 and x64 versions, then restart Windows.
Magic Game World linked this symptom to missing or corrupted localized audio. The available public patch notes do not identify door-transition audio as a specifically fixed issue, so file verification is the first practical step.
Why does the game stutter, even when it says 60 FPS?
Stuttering in this game can come from shader compilation, overlay activity, GPU load, or frame pacing. A displayed 60 FPS does not rule out a brief hitch or uneven frame delivery, and each cause calls for a different adjustment.
Start with a stable graphics baseline
Make graphics changes from the title screen or main menu. Some options are unavailable in the pause menu; if a setting is greyed out during play, return to the title screen. Film Grain is under Screen Settings, not Graphics.

- Volumetric Fog: Medium or Low.
- Shadows: Medium.
- Ambient Occlusion: Medium.
- Reflections: Medium, particularly if performance drops near water.
- Textures: High, or Medium if video memory is limited.
- Film Grain: Off if you prefer a cleaner image.
- V-Sync: Off in the game while diagnosing pacing; test driver-level V-Sync separately if needed.
Volumetric Fog is the largest reported graphics load. Magic Game World reported recovering roughly 20 FPS in heavier scenes by lowering it; that is the outlet’s figure, not a result guaranteed on every PC. Shadows at High or above and Ambient Occlusion at maximum can also cost performance, while reflections matter more near water.
DSOGaming’s 10 March 2026 performance analysis found the game GPU-bound on its test system, which used a Ryzen 9 7950X3D, 32 GB DDR5-6000, and GeForce driver 595.76 or Adrenalin 26.2.2. Its top tested GPUs maintained 60 FPS at 1080p Max. At 1440p Max, only the NVIDIA RTX 4090, RTX 5080, and RTX 5090 maintained a locked 60 FPS; the Radeon RX 7900 XTX and RX 9070 XT dipped to 55 FPS. At native 4K Max, DSOGaming found only the RTX 5090 held 60 FPS. These results explain why Quality upscaling can be more practical than native resolution at 1440p or 4K; they are not a requirement to buy a particular GPU.
First entry into a new area hitches
A brief stutter on first entering an area can be shader compilation rather than a persistent low frame rate. A Nexus Mods community fix by eva, posted 12 March 2026, changes the shader_precompiled_num value in the game’s graphics configuration to let the engine process more shaders at startup. The configuration file is located at %LOCALAPPDATA%KoeiTecmoFatalFrameIISavedatagraphics_option.json.

The workaround has a maintenance drawback: its instructions ask users to mark the file read-only, while a Nexus comment dated 11 September 2026 reports that the game can reset the value to 0 and clear the read-only flag. If you try it, make a copy of the configuration file first, note the original value, and check after launching whether the change remains. If it does not, avoid repeatedly fighting the game over the file; use the graphics and frame-pacing settings instead.

Cutscene micro-stutters or uneven pacing
Turn off the Steam Overlay first, then disable Discord and GeForce overlays if they are active. If the problem persists, compare the in-game V-Sync setting with driver-level V-Sync rather than enabling both by default. Magic Game World recommends V-Sync off in-game and forced in the graphics driver. Community reports also describe setting a monitor to 60 Hz or using RivaTuner Statistics Server with a 16,666-microsecond frametime limit and its asynchronous limiter. These are community workarounds, not official settings guaranteed for every display and GPU.
DSOGaming reported no major stuttering on its high-end system, with rare hitches most visible alongside an Afterburner overlay. That result does not disprove shader-compilation or pacing reports on other hardware: DSOGaming’s system and test conditions were different, and the game has no built-in benchmark to make the results directly interchangeable.
Why does 60 FPS feel choppy, or why does an unlocked frame rate slow the game down?
The Katana Engine ties game logic to frame rate, so an unstable unlock can affect both perceived smoothness and game speed. Start with the in-game 60 FPS cap; only consider an unlocked target if the PC can sustain it continuously.
On PC, the normal Max FPS choices are 30 and 60. Cutscenes remain locked at 30 FPS. DSOGaming reported that rates between the engine’s 60 and 120 FPS targets feel choppy; Magic Game World warned that selecting 120 FPS without maintaining a locked 120 can make the game run in slow motion. An unstable higher number is therefore not a reliable way to improve play.
For a 120 FPS target, community options include FF2RFix by Lyall and Native120FPSOption by MixedNutsJP. FF2RFix is an ASI plugin that can add custom resolutions, adjust the frame-rate target, expand ultrawide support, and make other changes. Native120FPSOption, posted 25 September 2026, exposes 120 in the in-game Max FPS menu; its author says the engine already runs at 120 internally. It requires MixedNuts’ dinput8.dll loader beside FatalFrameII.exe. Neither is an official patch, and both require extra files in the game installation.
Use a community unlock only if you understand how to remove it and restore the original game files. Keep cutscenes in mind: Magic Game World notes that running above 60 FPS can desynchronize their audio. The lower-risk choice for most systems is the built-in 60 FPS cap, with demanding visual settings reduced until that target is stable.

How do I fix a controller or gamepad that is not working on Steam PC?
Test Steam Input both enabled and disabled, restarting the game after each change. If the pad still fails, try a wired connection and a controller that presents as XInput; DualSense and DualShock 4 support on this Steam title is listed as USB-only.
- Change the game’s Steam Input override. In Steam Library, right-click the game, select Properties, open Controller, and set the override to Enable Steam Input. Fully exit and relaunch the game, then test input at the title screen.
- Test the opposite setting. If the controller is still dead, return to the same override and choose Disable Steam Input. Restart the game again; changing the option without relaunching is not a useful test.
- Check Steam’s controller-family setting. In Steam, open Settings → Controller → External Gamepad Settings. Enable only the family matching the controller. If enabling that family made the problem worse, test with it disabled.
- Connect by USB. Use a data-capable cable and connect directly to the PC while testing. Steam’s controller information lists DualShock 4 and DualSense as USB-only for this title. A wireless connection may work in other games without being a supported path here.
- For an Xbox controller, check the driver and selection. Install the Xbox Extended Feature Support driver if required, then open Windows’ USB Game Controllers control panel, select the controller, choose Advanced, and make it the preferred device if listed.
- Remove input conflicts. Disconnect extra USB devices, turn off virtual-controller software such as vJoy, and check Device Manager under Human Interface Devices for duplicate or ghost HID keyboard entries created by the pad. Disable only entries you can identify as duplicates; update or reinstall the gamepad driver if necessary.
- Check the display mode and permissions. If input still does not register, try running Steam as administrator and press
Alt+Enterto leave exclusive fullscreen.
The title supports XInput controllers with Xbox prompts (Type B) and wired DualShock 4 or DualSense controllers with PlayStation prompts (Type A). Nintendo Switch Pro controllers are listed for Bluetooth. The game has Modern 1, Modern 2, Classic 1, and Classic 2 presets, plus a fully remappable Custom layout. Camera and Camera Obscura sensitivity can be adjusted separately for horizontal and vertical movement. Haptic feedback is XInput-only; the PC version does not support DualSense adaptive triggers or haptics, motion sensors, or Impulse Triggers.
Controller reports vary substantially. A Proton issue remained open in March 2026; one user reported several controllers failing, while another reported an 8BitDo Ultimate working through its 2.4 GHz dongle. A Flydigi Vader 5 Pro was reportedly detected as a generic Xbox pad but still produced no game input. These reports do not establish a controller failure rate or a single universal fix. On Proton, commenters suggested testing PROTON_DISABLE_HIDRAW=1 or PROTON_PREFER_SDL=1 as launch options; treat both as experiments, and remove them if input gets worse.
Did an official patch fix these problems?
Koei Tecmo Europe’s latest named public update in the available notes is Ver. 1.04.00, dated 22 June 2026. Its notes say, “Fixed issues to improve game stability,” but do not name VP9, Steam Overlay crashes, door-transition audio, shader hitching, or controller detection. Do not assume those specific symptoms are resolved just because the game is updated.

SteamDB’s last record update in the supplied version history was 18 October 2026 and shows later changelists may exist without public notes. The absence of a named fix in public notes is not proof that no internal change occurred; it means the public record does not confirm a fix for the symptoms above. Install available updates, then keep using the symptom-specific workarounds if the issue remains.
What is different on Steam Deck?
The Steam Deck compatibility report dated 21 September 2026 classifies the game as Playable and says the default controller configuration provides full functionality. The same report warns that graphics settings need manual adjustment for good performance, so the handheld classification should not be read as a promise of a particular frame rate or preset.

When should I use a community fix?
Use community tools only after trying the game’s built-in options, file verification, codec installation, and Steam Input settings. They can add useful controls, but they also introduce extra files and can complicate later updates or troubleshooting.
- FF2RFix: Lyall’s ASI plugin can add custom resolutions, expand ultrawide and narrower-than-16:9 support, center the 16:9 HUD, skip intro logos, and adjust the frame-rate target. Its instructions say to extract it into
steamappscommonFatalFrameII. For Steam Deck or Linux, the listed extra launch option isWINEDLLOVERRIDES="dinput8=n,b" %command%. - Native120FPSOption: Adds a 120 choice to the in-game Max FPS menu and requires the MixedNuts
dinput8.dllloader beside the game executable. Use it only when the system can hold a locked 120 FPS and you accept the possibility of cutscene audio desynchronization above 60. - FIX Stuttering: Changes
shader_precompiled_numingraphics_option.json. Since reports say the game may reset the value and remove the file’s read-only flag, keep a backup and verify the change persists instead of assuming it is permanent.
FF2RFix and Native120FPSOption affect the game installation, while the shader workaround alters a user configuration file. Before installing a plugin, note the original files and be prepared to remove the added loader or restore the configuration. If a new crash begins after installing a community change, remove that change before investigating unrelated settings.
Where are the settings and save files stored?
The game stores its graphics configuration and saves under the Windows local application data directory. These paths are useful for backing up settings before a community tweak or checking whether the game has rewritten a configuration value.
