There is no single fastest VPN for every connection. In TechRadar’s April 2026 nearby-throughput test, PrivadoVPN reached 2,334 Mbps, Mullvad 2,308 Mbps and Windscribe 2,263 Mbps. A separate Comparitech Q3 2026 score that combines latency, speed retention and bufferbloat ranked Mullvad first (8.8), NordVPN second (8.3) and ExpressVPN third (8.0). Those results measure different things, so the right choice depends on whether you care most about large downloads, long-distance streaming, gaming responsiveness, calls or upload performance.

This guide explains what the current figures mean, why they disagree, which protocols to try first, and how to measure the fastest setup on your own network.

What does “fastest VPN” actually mean?

VPN speed is not one number. A service can deliver exceptional nearby download throughput yet feel sluggish in a game because its server adds latency or bufferbloat. Evaluate at least four measurements:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Download throughput: how quickly data arrives, usually reported in Mbps. It matters for large files and high-bitrate video.
  • Upload throughput: how quickly data leaves your device. Cloud backups, livestreaming and sending large files depend on it, and it can differ dramatically from download performance.
  • Latency and jitter: the delay and variation in packet delivery. Lower, steadier values make games, voice calls and remote desktops feel responsive.
  • Loaded latency (bufferbloat): how much ping rises while the connection is busy. A VPN that keeps loaded latency low may feel better than a higher-Mbps service during downloads or household congestion.

Route distance, your unprotected baseline, the test server, device hardware, encryption protocol and time of day all change the result. A headline figure is therefore a measurement under particular conditions, not a permanent guarantee.

Which VPNs lead the 2026 speed tests?

Use the following results as metric-specific evidence rather than a universal league table. TechRadar measured nearby throughput in April 2026; Comparitech used a Q3 2026 composite rubric; Security.org reported percentage losses in a January 2026 test.

Service Metric and test Result What it suggests
PrivadoVPN Nearby download, TechRadar April 2026; WireGuard 2,334 Mbps Highest raw nearby throughput in that table
Mullvad Nearby download, TechRadar April 2026; WireGuard 2,308 Mbps Near the top for local high-bandwidth transfers
Windscribe Nearby download, TechRadar April 2026; WireGuard 2,263 Mbps Another leading local-throughput result
CyberGhost Nearby download, TechRadar April 2026 1,480 Mbps Strong, but below the three leaders in this test
Proton VPN Nearby download, TechRadar April 2026; WireGuard 1,475 Mbps High local throughput
NordVPN Nearby download, TechRadar April 2026; NordLynx 1,249 Mbps Competitive local speed with a proprietary WireGuard-based protocol
ExpressVPN Nearby download, TechRadar April 2026; Lightway Turbo 1,177 Mbps Solid local speed; protocol and route can change its position
Mullvad Composite speed score, Comparitech Q3 2026 8.8 First when latency, retention and bufferbloat are blended
NordVPN Composite speed score, Comparitech Q3 2026 8.3 Second overall on that responsiveness-oriented rubric
ExpressVPN Composite speed score, Comparitech Q3 2026 8.0 Third on the same composite measure
Mullvad UK speed retention, Comparitech Q3 2026 95.39% Very high retention on the tested UK route
NordVPN Download loss, Security.org January 2026 5.78% Small reduction from that test’s unprotected baseline
NordVPN Upload loss, Security.org January 2026 4.11% Upload held up almost as well as download
Proton VPN Download loss, Security.org January 2026 8.18% Greater download reduction than NordVPN in that setup
Proton VPN Upload loss, Security.org January 2026 4.08% Marginally lower upload loss than NordVPN in that test

Because the methodologies differ, it is not valid to declare the 2,334-Mbps result the best choice for gaming, or to assume a lower nearby score will always stream worse over a transatlantic route.

Why do independent VPN speed rankings disagree?

Each test answers a different question. TechRadar’s nearby figures emphasize maximum throughput to a close server on the listed protocol. Comparitech’s score folds in regional latency, retained speed and bufferbloat, which better represents an interactive connection under load. Security.org reports percentage loss against its own baseline, so a small loss does not automatically mean the highest absolute Mbps if the starting connection was slower.

Baseline capacity sets the ceiling

A VPN cannot create bandwidth your internet plan, Wi-Fi link or ISP does not provide. If your unprotected connection reaches 80 Mbps, a 2,000-Mbps laboratory result cannot make your VPN tunnel deliver 2,000 Mbps. Always record the unprotected result taken immediately before the VPN test.

Distance and congestion change the route

A nearby server may be only a few milliseconds away, while a US–UK or Asia–US connection crosses multiple networks. Evening congestion, peering changes and the selected city can move a service from first to last without any app update.

Download and upload are separate capabilities

Security.org’s January 2026 measurements illustrate this: NordVPN lost 5.78% of download capacity and 4.11% of upload capacity, while Proton VPN lost 8.18% and 4.08%, respectively. Do not infer upload quality from a download ranking when choosing a service for livestreaming or cloud backup.

Is WireGuard the fastest VPN protocol?

WireGuard is the best starting point for speed on devices and networks that support it. In Comparitech’s US medians, Mullvad WireGuard reached 838 Mbps, NordVPN WireGuard 821 Mbps and Proton VPN WireGuard 820 Mbps; ExpressVPN’s Lightway median was 704 Mbps in the same dataset. These are medians from one test design, not guaranteed speeds for every subscriber.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Protocol names you will see

  • WireGuard: an efficient, modern protocol used directly by many providers.
  • NordLynx: NordVPN’s implementation built around WireGuard. The provider describes it as “NordVPN’s revolutionary technology built around the WireGuard® VPN protocol.”
  • Lightway Turbo: ExpressVPN’s accelerated mode. Its documentation says it uses “multi-lane tunneling to send more data simultaneously,” which can improve download and upload speed where supported.
  • OpenVPN: a mature fallback. TechRadar measured ExpressVPN ahead of NordVPN on OpenVPN, showing why a slower-looking protocol can win on a particular route or implementation.

How to choose a protocol

  1. Open the VPN app’s connection or protocol settings.
  2. Select WireGuard, NordLynx or Lightway Turbo, depending on what the app offers.
  3. Reconnect to a nearby server and run a baseline comparison.
  4. If the tunnel is blocked, unstable or unexpectedly slow, test OpenVPN UDP; use TCP only when UDP cannot pass through the network.
  5. Keep the fastest protocol that remains stable for your actual activity, not just a single burst test.

Which VPN is fastest for large nearby downloads?

For a close server and maximum local throughput, the April 2026 TechRadar table favors PrivadoVPN at 2,334 Mbps, followed by Mullvad at 2,308 Mbps and Windscribe at 2,263 Mbps. CyberGhost (1,480 Mbps), Proton VPN (1,475 Mbps), NordVPN (1,249 Mbps) and ExpressVPN with Lightway Turbo (1,177 Mbps) also produced substantial throughput in that test.

These figures are most relevant to downloading large files from a nearby data center or streaming from a local service. Select the geographically closest server rather than a “specialty” location on another continent, and check whether your own broadband connection is the limiting factor.

Which VPN is fastest for long-distance streaming?

There is no permanent winner for a distant streaming route. ExpressVPN and NordVPN trade advantages depending on protocol and destination, while a provider that leads a nearby test can lose speed after the route crosses an ocean.

A practical streaming procedure

  1. Measure your unprotected speed to the streaming service’s region, if your test tool allows that server choice.
  2. Connect to the same country with the fastest protocol available.
  3. Repeat the test at the time you normally watch, because evening congestion can dominate the result.
  4. Check sustained playback for resolution drops or repeated buffering, not just the first speed-test burst.
  5. If performance is poor, try a second city in the same country before changing providers; route quality can differ between locations.

What is the fastest VPN for gaming and calls?

Choose the service and server combination with the lowest, most stable ping and the smallest loaded-latency increase. Raw Mbps above the game or call’s requirement provides little benefit if packets take a longer or congested route.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prioritize these measurements

  • Unloaded ping: the baseline reaction time to the game or call server.
  • Jitter: variation between packets, which can cause choppy audio or inconsistent game movement.
  • Loaded ping: whether latency spikes while another device downloads.
  • Packet loss: missing packets can produce freezes even when a speed test looks fast.

Comparitech’s Q3 2026 composite, which includes regional latency and bufferbloat, placed Mullvad first at 8.8, NordVPN second at 8.3 and ExpressVPN third at 8.0. Treat that ordering as a useful shortlist, then test the server nearest your game or conferencing region.

How can you test which VPN is fastest on your connection?

A repeatable home test is more useful than copying a laboratory ranking. Keep the conditions consistent and save the results.

  1. Stabilize the setup. Use Ethernet if possible, pause cloud sync and downloads, close other VPN or proxy software, and note your device, operating system, connection type and internet plan.
  2. Run the unprotected baseline. Test download, upload, ping and loaded latency to the same test location you will use for the VPN.
  3. Choose one nearby server. Record the city and distance. Do not let the app automatically switch locations between runs.
  4. Test the default fast protocol. Use WireGuard, NordLynx or Lightway Turbo and run at least three tests several minutes apart.
  5. Test your real route. Repeat with the country used for gaming, streaming or work. A nearby result cannot predict a distant route.
  6. Compare the fallback. If stability matters, repeat with OpenVPN UDP and record whether latency or throughput changes.
  7. Calculate retention. Divide VPN speed by baseline speed and multiply by 100. Keep download and upload calculations separate.
  8. Test under load. Start a large download on another device and watch ping. The service with the smaller latency spike may feel faster in everyday use.

Report the date, time, baseline, protocol, server city, device and connection type alongside any result. Without those details, another person cannot reproduce or fairly interpret the number.

How do you improve VPN speed without changing providers?

  • Move to the closest available server that still meets your location requirement.
  • Use Ethernet or a clear 5-GHz/6-GHz Wi-Fi channel; weak Wi-Fi can masquerade as VPN overhead.
  • Prefer the provider’s WireGuard-based option, then compare UDP and TCP fallbacks if a network interferes.
  • Disable unnecessary multi-hop, secure-core or traffic-inspection features during a speed test; extra hops generally add distance and processing.
  • Update the VPN application and your device’s network drivers, then restart the app after changing protocols.
  • Check whether antivirus web scanning, parental-control filters or another tunnel is encrypting traffic twice.
  • For gaming, select a server near the game or voice-service region rather than simply the nearest VPN server to your home.

What causes a VPN to be slow, and how do you fix it?

The speed is low on every server

First rerun the unprotected baseline. If that is also low, troubleshoot Wi-Fi, the router and the ISP before blaming the VPN. If only the VPN is slow, switch protocols and test a nearby city.

Only one country is slow

That points to route congestion, an overloaded exit server or poor peering. Try another city in the same country, then compare at a different time. A distant route may simply be constrained by its weakest transit network.

Speed is high but games or calls stutter

Check jitter, packet loss and loaded latency rather than download Mbps. Stop background uploads, test a closer endpoint to the application and choose the route with the steadiest ping.

OpenVPN works but WireGuard will not connect

Some public, corporate and hotel networks block or interfere with UDP. Use OpenVPN TCP as a compatibility fallback, accepting that its throughput may be lower, or switch to a network that permits the faster protocol.

The VPN disconnects during heavy transfers

Test another server and protocol, update the client and check whether the device is overheating or entering a power-saving state. Stability is part of speed: a tunnel that repeatedly reconnects will deliver less data over an hour than a slightly slower, reliable connection.

VPN applications generally require an active subscription and a compatible device, but the decisive performance variables are your baseline connection, server route, protocol and time of day. Recheck them whenever your ISP, router, device or VPN app changes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a VPN ever make my internet faster?

It cannot raise the physical capacity of your broadband line. In unusual cases, a VPN may avoid an ISP routing problem or traffic-management path, but verify that effect with repeated baseline and VPN tests at the same time of day.

How many VPN servers should I test before choosing one?

Test at least three nearby cities and the specific country you need for work, gaming or streaming. Keep the protocol and test conditions fixed so you compare routes rather than random app changes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does using a VPN on Wi-Fi reduce speed more than using Ethernet?

Often the wireless link is the bottleneck, especially with interference or a distant router. Repeat the comparison over Ethernet or close to the access point before attributing the entire reduction to encryption.

Should I leave the fastest protocol enabled all the time?

Use it when the network permits stable connections and your privacy requirements are met. On restrictive networks, a slower fallback that stays connected can provide better real-world performance than a fast protocol that repeatedly fails.
