Yes, an AI agent can give different political answers after a conversation, and experiments show that AI conversations can also shift people’s policy attitudes or candidate preferences. But a changed answer is not, by itself, proof that an AI has changed a lasting political belief. To assess what changed, compare the same questions under controlled conditions, record the model and prompts, and check whether the result holds across repeated runs and remains factually accurate.
What does it mean for an AI agent to change its political views?
The phrase can describe two different things: a change in what an AI says, or a change in what a person thinks after using AI. Those outcomes need separate evidence. A chatbot producing a more left- or right-leaning answer after a discussion is evidence of a changed expressed stance in that exchange. It does not establish that the system has a durable, human-like political belief.
Responses may vary because of the wording of a prompt, the position taken by the other speaker, agreement or anchoring effects, sampling variation, or changes made through fine-tuning. These possibilities matter because a system can sound consistent and confident without its answers representing a stable internal view. The safest wording is therefore that an agent’s expressed stance changed, unless a study establishes something stronger.
For people, the relevant outcome is an attitude measured before and after exposure, ideally with a later follow-up and a comparison group. A chatbot’s persuasive tone—or a participant’s report that a message seemed convincing—is not enough on its own to show that the person’s political view changed.

Can AI conversations change people’s political opinions?
In experimental settings, AI-generated political messages have shifted human policy attitudes, and conversations advocating for candidates have affected candidate preferences. These findings concern people exposed to messages; they do not show that the AI itself adopted a new political position.
Policy attitudes in preregistered experiments
A 2025 Nature Communications study reported three preregistered survey experiments with a combined 4,829 participants. LLM-generated political messages shifted participants’ policy attitudes, with small effects comparable in size to messages written by laypeople. That is evidence of persuasion under the conditions studied, not a universal estimate of how much any chatbot will change any user’s mind.
Candidate preferences in election experiments
A 2025 study in Nature tested conversations advocating for candidates in the 2024 U.S. presidential election and the 2025 elections in Canada and Poland. It reported significant effects on candidate preferences. The authors also noted that some claims in the conversations were inaccurate and that, in those experiments, models advocating for right-leaning candidates made more inaccurate claims.

That accuracy finding is specific to the studied experiments. It should not be expanded into a general claim about all political messages, models, countries, or political directions. When assessing persuasion, check both whether attitudes moved and whether the claims used to move them were correct.
Can an AI agent’s expressed political stance change during a conversation?
Yes. A 2026 Nature Communications study modeled opinion dynamics in six LLMs across twelve topics and reported rapid convergence toward topic-dependent attractors. The authors also found that fine-tuning could shift those attractors. The result describes model behavior in their experimental setup; it does not establish that deployed agents hold stable human-like political beliefs.
In practical terms, an agent may answer differently after encountering an interlocutor’s stance or after its training has been changed. To determine whether that is a repeatable shift rather than one unusual response, compare controlled sets of answers. One output should be treated as a sample, not a diagnosis.

A separate 2026 AAAI paper studied political-opinion representation vectors in eight open-source models and reported that interventions could produce responses with targeted political leanings. This shows that political response patterns can be probed in the models examined. It does not supply a universal detector for every AI system, nor does a targeted response establish a lasting belief change.

How can you tell whether an AI’s political stance changed?
Use a controlled comparison rather than relying on a before-and-after impression. Keep the question and model conditions as consistent as possible, vary the conversational context deliberately, and see whether the difference recurs.
- Choose a narrow, answerable question. Record the exact political question and the response features you will compare, such as a policy position, stated candidate preference, or the reasons offered. Do not treat a change in tone as a change in stance.
- Capture a baseline. Ask the question before the interaction and save the full prompt and answer. Record the date and the model name or version shown by the service. If the interface does not disclose a version, note that it was not stated rather than guessing.
- Define the interaction. Keep a record of the messages exchanged and whether the other speaker expressed agreement, disagreement, or no political position. If fine-tuning or another model intervention is involved, document it separately from ordinary conversation.
- Ask the same question again. Reuse the original wording and conditions after the interaction. If the prompt, system settings, or model version has also changed, the comparison cannot isolate the conversation as the reason for a different answer.
- Repeat the comparison. Run multiple trials under the same conditions and compare the distribution of answers, not just the most striking one. If available, record uncertainty or variation in the system’s responses.
- Use controls. Compare the interaction with a no-discussion condition and, where relevant, conversations with interlocutors taking different positions. A neutral message or another AI condition may also help distinguish effects of the political stance from effects of simply having a conversation.
- Check factual claims separately. Identify the claims offered as reasons and verify them against reliable evidence. A stance that shifts alongside inaccurate claims should not be reported as a well-supported change in political judgment.
Report the result narrowly: for example, that a particular model version gave a different answer after a particular interaction, under specified conditions. That description is more defensible than saying the AI “changed its beliefs.”

How should you compare studies or AI systems?
Studies that all use the phrase “political change” may measure different outcomes. Before comparing results, identify what changed, what intervention was used, and what the control condition was.

What does a warning about AI political bias tell us?
A bias warning can change how receptive people are to a chatbot’s message, without changing the chatbot’s own stance. A 2026 preregistered U.S. survey experiment by DiGiuseppe and Robison in PNAS Nexus involved 2,144 participants and examined ChatGPT conversations about an economic-policy misconception.

In that experiment, warning participants that ChatGPT was biased against their party reduced the measured misconception-correction effect by 28% relative to a neutral control. The 28% figure describes the attenuation reported in that study; it is not a general measure of how much any warning reduces AI persuasion. The outcome was a change in people’s receptiveness to correction, not a change in ChatGPT’s political position.

What can the evidence establish—and what remains uncertain?
The cited studies establish that AI messages can shift some human attitudes in experimental settings and that LLMs can exhibit changes in expressed stance under studied conditions. They do not establish one effect size that applies across systems, issues, populations, or elections. The studies use different models, topics, participants, and outcome measures, so their results should not be combined into a single universal estimate.
- The cited work does not validate a single detector that can establish stable political-view change in every deployed system.
- It does not settle how long an observed effect persists across later conversations or model updates.
- It does not establish whether simulated shifts in agent-to-agent dialogue predict real-world political behavior.
When discussing a specific result, name the system or study conditions and distinguish an observed response from an inferred internal belief. That precision helps prevent experimental findings from being mistaken for proof about every chatbot or voter.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can two chatbots give different political answers to the same question?
Yes. Different model families, versions, or prompt conditions can produce different responses. A difference between two systems is a comparison of their outputs, not evidence that either system changed its stance over time.
Does a more confident political answer mean the AI’s view is more stable?
No. Confidence in the wording is not a measure of persistence. To assess stability, compare answers across repeated runs and relevant model versions rather than relying on how certain one response sounds.
Can I use a chatbot’s answer to predict how someone will vote?
The cited experiments measured policy attitudes or candidate preferences in specified settings; they do not establish that a chatbot’s answer predicts an individual’s vote. Avoid treating an experimental attitude measure as a forecast of real-world voting.
