“Faja” and “compression garment” can describe the same broad type of post-liposuction garment: MedlinePlus uses “faja de compresión” in its Spanish liposuction aftercare guidance and “compression garment” in English. But the names alone do not tell you whether a particular garment has the right coverage, fit, or construction for your Lipo 360 procedure. Follow your surgeon’s instructions for the specific garment and wear schedule.
What is the difference between a faja and a compression garment?
In this context, the terms overlap. “Faja” is Spanish for a girdle or shaping garment, and MedlinePlus’s Spanish liposuction aftercare page calls the recommended post-operative item a “faja de compresión.” Its English page refers to a compression garment. The wording does not establish that every faja and every compression garment is interchangeable.
For choosing what to wear, focus on the garment itself: which areas it covers, how it is constructed and fastened, how it fits, and whether your surgical team approves it for your operation and recovery stage.
Why might a surgeon recommend one after Lipo 360?
Compression garments are one form of support used in liposuction recovery. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons says a patient may need an elastic bandage, support bra, or compression garment to help minimize swelling and support healing. MedlinePlus says patients will likely need a compression garment for several weeks and advises following the surgeon’s instructions about how long to wear it.

Those are general liposuction recommendations, not a universal Lipo 360 protocol. The sources do not establish one exact duration or stage-by-stage schedule for everyone. Your operating surgeon should give you the plan for your procedure and recovery.

- Construction and closures: Is its design practical for your recovery and approved by the team?
- Fit as swelling changes: What should the fit feel like, and when should you ask for a different size?
- Changing and washing: Would having a second garment be useful while one is being washed?
- Current recovery stage: Is this particular garment appropriate now, rather than at another point in recovery?
Do not assume that a smaller size, stronger compression, or a “Stage 2” label is better. A 2024 FAJA.com catalog, for example, markets a Stage 2 short-with-bra product for liposuction with breast augmentation, Lipo 360, and postpartum recovery. That is a product listing, not clinical evidence that its pressure, fit, or stage is right for an individual patient. Do not substitute ordinary shapewear or a waist trainer unless your surgeon approves it.
How tight should a post-liposuction garment feel?
It should be snug, not painfully tight or restrictive. ASPS guidance says a garment should fit snugly enough to function without being uncomfortable or restricting breathing. In an ASPS article published April 11, 2025, plastic surgeon Roy Kim, MD, said garments “should be compressive but not too tight”; the article advises that they allow some movement and should not feel as if they are cutting off circulation.

Contact your surgical team if the garment is uncomfortable or restricts your breathing, as ASPS advises. Ask them what to do rather than trying to compensate by sizing down or choosing a more compressive garment.

Compression is common in liposuction aftercare, but the evidence does not support treating every claimed benefit as guaranteed. A 2023 practical review in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery found the evidence, its volume, and agreement on the subject to be heterogeneous. It also noted potential costs and complications, including discomfort, increased venous stasis, and skin defects, and encouraged surgeons to critically reassess garment use.

That review does not justify promising that compression will prevent seromas or guarantee a particular final contour. Ask your surgeon what the garment is intended to do in your case and how to raise concerns about fit or discomfort.
