ExtraTorrents Proxy Sites List (2025) pages do not provide a verified route back to the original service. ExtraTorrent shut down permanently on May 17, 2017, and no current domain using the name should be assumed official, safe, or operated by the original team. This article therefore does not publish live proxy links.

The original ExtraTorrent is defunct. Search results may still show domains described as “working mirrors,” “proxies,” or “replacements,” but those labels are usually claims made by third-party pages rather than proof of ownership or continuity.

Updated August 18, 2026: This is a current-status and safety guide, not a directory of active piracy mirrors.

Key takeaways

  • The original ExtraTorrent service shut down permanently on May 17, 2017, according to contemporary reporting and historical references.
  • No authoritative, independently verifiable list of official ExtraTorrent mirrors has been found; modern domains using the name should be treated as unofficial.
  • A homepage loading only proves that a server responded; it does not prove authentic ownership, safe files, working downloads, or lawful content.
  • A proxy or VPN can change network routing, but neither tool authenticates a mirror, removes malware, or makes unauthorized downloading lawful.
  • BitTorrent has lawful uses, including authorized open-source software, public-domain works, and creator-approved releases.

What is the current ExtraTorrents Proxy Sites List (2025) status?

The current status is that the original ExtraTorrent is gone, and a 2025 proxy list cannot be treated as a live or authoritative directory in August 2026. A page published or updated in 2025 may now contain dead domains, redirects, copied indexes, or claims that were never independently verified.

ExtraTorrent reportedly closed on May 17, 2017. TorrentFreak’s reporting on the post-shutdown replacement describes the disappearance of the original service and related domains, while the historical ExtraTorrent reference records the shutdown and the reported wiping of the original database.

A modern site can reuse the ExtraTorrent name, logo, layout, or search terminology without having any connection to the former operators, database, community, or reputation. “ExtraTorrent is back” is therefore an unverified claim unless it is supported by a verifiable statement from the original operators and independent technical evidence.

Are any ExtraTorrent mirrors official?

No authoritative official ExtraTorrent mirror list could be verified. Current pages describing domains as mirrors, proxies, or replacements generally provide third-party claims rather than verifiable proof that the original team operates those domains.

The distinction matters because the original service shut down years ago. A site that copies its branding may be:

  • a separate torrent index attempting to attract former users;
  • a partial or recycled database;
  • a search page that redirects elsewhere;
  • an advertising page with little or no genuine index functionality;
  • a clone designed to collect credentials, payments, or software installations; or
  • a compromised domain that has changed purpose.

Recent proxy-list coverage itself acknowledges that purported current domains are generally unofficial mirrors, copycat indexes, or proxy-style gateways. Techbloat’s discussion of alleged working mirrors should be read as evidence of the uncertainty surrounding these claims, not as authentication of the domains it mentions. A second Techbloat status discussion likewise does not establish official ownership.

For that reason, this article deliberately omits live proxy URLs. Publishing unverified domains would amplify sites that may be unsafe, unavailable, or infringing.

What is the difference between a proxy, mirror, clone, and replacement?

A proxy, mirror, clone, and replacement describe different technical or commercial ideas, although SEO pages often use the terms loosely.

Term Meaning Why the label is not proof
Proxy An intermediary that requests content from another site and passes the response to the visitor. A proxy can relay an unofficial, altered, malicious, or incomplete destination.
Mirror A duplicate or partial reproduction of a website or database. A supposed mirror may contain only copied branding, selected listings, or stale data.
Clone A site that imitates another service’s name, design, or listings. Visual similarity does not establish common ownership or authentic data.
Replacement A separate service that tries to attract the former audience of a closed site. A replacement is not a continuation of the original service merely because it uses similar branding.

A site described as a “mirror” may therefore be a different index, an ad page, a redirector, or a database populated from another source. The label alone tells you very little about authenticity, safety, or legality.

Why are “working ExtraTorrent mirror” claims unreliable?

“Working” is not a meaningful safety or authenticity standard. At most, the word may mean that a particular page loaded during an unspecified check.

Proxy-list pages commonly have several limitations:

  • Date sensitivity: domains can disappear, change owners, or redirect within hours or days.
  • Unclear testing: a list may not state the tester’s country, ISP, DNS resolver, browser, timestamp, or test method.
  • Partial functionality: a homepage may load while search, metadata, downloads, or redirects are broken.
  • Copied presentation: familiar logos, layouts, uploader badges, comments, and popularity figures can be fabricated.
  • Geographic variation: a domain may resolve for one country, ISP, or DNS service but fail elsewhere.
  • Stale search results: search snippets can display older dates than the page’s claimed update date.
  • Unsafe monetization: aggressive advertising networks may introduce pop-ups, forced redirects, fake alerts, or unwanted downloads.

A loading homepage does not prove that a site is operated by the original ExtraTorrent team, that its listings are genuine, that its files are safe, or that its content is authorized. A status table that says “online” should therefore never be mistaken for a trust rating.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The TechPP discussion of ExtraTorrent proxy claims illustrates another problem: lists may contain unnamed entries such as “Proxy 1” and “Proxy 2” while marking other named domains unavailable. Such labels are not independently verifiable evidence.

How can you evaluate a purported ExtraTorrent mirror?

The safest framework is “do not trust unless verified,” rather than “working versus not working.” In practice, generic proxy-list pages cannot normally verify the most important questions.

Authenticity

  • Is there a verifiable announcement from the original operators?
  • Does the domain have a credible ownership history?
  • Does the site claim to possess the original database, and can that claim be checked independently?
  • Does the site ask for money, credentials, browser extensions, or unusual software?

Because the original service closed and its data was reportedly wiped, an “official return” claim requires unusually strong evidence. A similar name or interface is not enough.

Technical safety

  • HTTPS encrypts a connection to a domain, but a valid certificate proves domain control rather than trustworthy content.
  • Unexpected redirects, pop-ups, fake virus alerts, and forced notification requests are warning signs.
  • Search results, comments, uploader labels, and “verified” badges can be manipulated.
  • A file should not be opened solely because a page labels it “safe” or “verified.”

Legal status

  • Consider the law where you live; copyright rules differ by country.
  • Distinguish viewing a page from downloading, uploading, or distributing protected material.
  • A proxy, VPN, Tor connection, or foreign hosting location does not remove legal obligations.

Reliability

“Online” may mean only that DNS resolves or that a web server returns a homepage. A 2025 list is not current evidence for August 2026, and even a freshly checked domain may later be replaced, compromised, or redirected.

What are the legal risks of downloading through an ExtraTorrent proxy?

Using a proxy does not make unauthorized downloading or sharing lawful. In the United States, downloading or uploading copyrighted works without permission may infringe the copyright owner’s reproduction or distribution rights.

The U.S. Copyright Office’s digital-music and peer-to-peer FAQ states that statutory damages can reach $30,000 per infringed work, or up to $150,000 per work for willful infringement, subject to the facts of the case. These figures are not automatic fines; they describe potential statutory damages in applicable U.S. copyright litigation, and other consequences may also apply.

U.S. law also has DMCA safe-harbor rules, but those rules primarily concern qualifying online service providers that meet specific requirements. The Copyright Office’s DMCA overview does not give an end user permission to download unauthorized works.

Outside the United States, liability, remedies, and enforcement procedures vary. This information is general guidance, not legal advice. The relevant question is not whether a file was reached through a proxy; the relevant questions are what the material is, whether the rights holder authorized its distribution, and what the user did with it.

BitTorrent technology itself is not inherently illegal. Lawful examples include authorized distribution of Linux operating systems, open-source software, public-domain works, Creative Commons material used according to its license, creator-approved releases, and institutional datasets. Verify the license on the rights holder’s or official project’s website rather than relying on an uploader’s description.

What security risks do unofficial ExtraTorrent mirrors create?

Unofficial piracy-oriented sites and apps can expose visitors to malware, phishing, deceptive advertising, and misleading files. The Federal Trade Commission warns that illegal streaming apps and add-ons may contain malware and can affect other devices connected to the same network; its consumer malware alert explains the risk.

Threat What it may look like Possible consequence
Fake download button Several prominent buttons, “instant download” prompts, or a supposed codec or player. An executable, browser extension, bundled installer, or redirect may be downloaded instead of the intended file.
Malware and unwanted software Cracked installers, fake updates, suspicious extensions, or files with misleading names. Credential theft, browser hijacking, ransomware, cryptocurrency mining, remote access, or adware.
Phishing Requests for email, password, payment card, wallet payment, or “account verification.” Stolen credentials, financial loss, or account takeover.
Malvertising New tabs, fake virus warnings, forced redirects, or notification-permission prompts. Deceptive downloads, unwanted notifications, or exposure to additional malicious pages.
Poisoned files A popular-looking listing, uploader badge, comments, or “verified” label. Malware, a fake file, or content that does not match its filename.
Accidental uploading A peer-to-peer client sharing pieces while a download is active. Participation in distribution, not merely receipt, of copyrighted material.

The FTC report on peer-to-peer file sharing discusses copyright, privacy, security, and unwanted-file risks. File extensions, uploader labels, comments, and apparent popularity are not reliable guarantees that a download is authentic or safe.

Is a VPN enough to use an ExtraTorrent proxy safely?

No. A VPN is a privacy and routing tool, not a copyright authorization mechanism or malware detector.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
A VPN may help with A VPN does not provide
Encrypting traffic from some local network observers, depending on the VPN and connection. Proof that a mirror is official or trustworthy.
Changing the apparent network location presented to some websites. Protection from phishing pages, fake download buttons, or malicious files.
Reducing exposure on some untrusted networks when configured correctly. Legal permission to download or upload copyrighted works.
A measure of general privacy for legitimate browsing. A guarantee that the provider keeps no relevant logs or that peer-to-peer software will not upload files.

A VPN can change network routing, but it cannot verify a domain, inspect every downloaded file, reverse a credential theft, or guarantee anonymity. Marketing a VPN as a legal shield would be misleading. The FTC has previously challenged deceptive claims that a paid peer-to-peer service made copyright infringement legal; see the FTC enforcement announcement.

What are safer legal alternatives to ExtraTorrent?

The safest alternative is to obtain the same type of material from the rights holder, an authorized distributor, a library, or a reputable public archive. Organize the search by the type of content needed rather than by a replacement piracy index.

Need Safer source category Verification step
Operating systems and software Official developer pages, open-source project repositories, and recognized distribution mirrors. Start from the project’s official website and confirm checksums or signatures when the project provides them.
Books and older media Public-domain libraries, library ebook services, and official archives. Check the work’s copyright or public-domain status for your country.
Music Creator-direct platforms and authorized music stores or services. Confirm that the artist or rights holder authorizes the release.
Movies and television Authorized streaming, rental, purchase, library, and broadcaster services. Availability and licensing vary by country and title.
Games Official stores, publisher launchers, and authorized free releases. Avoid “cracked” installers and unofficial repacks.
Datasets and research Institutional repositories, government archives, and project-hosted downloads. Read the dataset license and confirm the institution’s domain.

Open-source software, public-domain works, Creative Commons releases, and other openly licensed files can be legally distributed through peer-to-peer technology when the distribution follows the applicable license. A torrent uploader’s claim is not a substitute for the official license or project page.

What should you do after visiting a suspicious ExtraTorrent mirror?

If a suspicious page was opened, close it and focus on whether anything was installed, downloaded, authorized, or submitted. A visit alone does not prove that a device is infected, but unexpected prompts and downloads deserve a careful response.

  1. Close the tab. Do not continue through redirects or grant browser notification permission.
  2. Do not install anything prompted by the page. Avoid executables, extensions, codecs, “VPNs,” browser updates, and bundled installers offered by the site.
  3. Delete unexpected downloads. Do not open or double-click files merely because a page calls them verified.
  4. Run the operating system’s current security scan. Use reputable, updated security software and follow its quarantine guidance.
  5. Review browser extensions. Remove unfamiliar extensions, especially anything installed after the visit.
  6. Revoke notification permission. In the browser’s site settings, remove notification access for the suspicious domain.
  7. Change exposed passwords. If credentials were entered, begin with email and financial accounts, use unique passwords, and enable multifactor authentication.
  8. Contact the financial institution. If payment-card or banking information was submitted, notify the issuer immediately and monitor transactions.
  9. Check for persistence. Look for unusual browser behavior, new startup programs, unfamiliar applications, unexplained accounts, or unusual network activity.
  10. Isolate a suspected infection. Disconnect the affected device from the network while preserving useful evidence and contacting a qualified technician or the relevant security provider.

If an executable ran, credentials were submitted, or financial information was exposed, treat the event as more serious than a normal page visit. Do not rely on a VPN or browser reset as proof that the device or accounts are safe.

Why this article does not publish a live proxy list

A live ExtraTorrent proxy list would imply that domains are current, authentic, safe, and appropriate to use. The available evidence cannot support those claims. Domain availability changes, ownership is difficult to establish from a generic list, and a functioning page can still host deceptive advertising, malicious downloads, or unauthorized material.

The responsible conclusion is not that every domain carrying the ExtraTorrent name is definitively fraudulent. The supportable conclusion is narrower: no current domain should be assumed official without verifiable provenance, and a static proxy page cannot provide that assurance. Readers seeking lawful content should use official project, library, archive, creator, and authorized commercial sources instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is ExtraTorrent still working?

The original ExtraTorrent is not still working; the service shut down permanently on May 17, 2017. Current websites using the ExtraTorrent name are separate, unofficial, or unverified unless strong independent evidence proves otherwise.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are ExtraTorrent mirrors official?

No authoritative official ExtraTorrent mirror list has been verified. A copied name, logo, layout, or listing database does not prove that a modern domain is operated by the original team.

Is using an ExtraTorrent proxy legal?

A proxy is a routing intermediary and does not determine whether downloading is legal. Legal status depends on the material, rights-holder authorization, and the user’s conduct and location; unauthorized downloading or uploading of copyrighted works may create liability.

Does a VPN make torrenting legal?

No. A VPN may provide some privacy on certain networks or change apparent routing, but it does not authenticate a mirror, remove malware, verify files, or authorize downloading or uploading copyrighted works.

Is BitTorrent itself illegal?

No. BitTorrent has lawful uses, including authorized open-source software, public-domain works, openly licensed material, creator-approved releases, and institutional datasets. The legal issue is authorization and conduct, not the protocol by itself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do if I entered my password on a suspicious mirror?

Change the exposed password immediately, starting with email and financial accounts, use a unique replacement password, enable multifactor authentication, and monitor the account. Contact the financial institution promptly if payment details were submitted.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: ExtraTorrent shut down permanently on May 17, 2017. No current “proxy” or “mirror” should be assumed official or safe, and a VPN does not make unauthorized downloading lawful. Avoid live mirror lists, use authorized sources for content, and follow the recovery checklist if a suspicious page or download was involved.
