ExpressVPN is still a strong all-round VPN in 2026, especially if you value a mature privacy program, support across devices and routers, and a polished everyday experience. It is not an automatic best choice for everyone: speed varies substantially by protocol and platform, streaming can be less stable in some situations, and promotional pricing may not tell you what renewal will cost.
What does ExpressVPN do well in 2026?
ExpressVPN’s strongest case is the combination of privacy engineering, a broad device and router story, and a proprietary protocol that has developed over time. Its Trust Center lists independent assessments covering apps, infrastructure, browser extensions, Lightway, Aircove, and newer services. The named firms include Cure53, KPMG, PwC, F-Secure, and Praetorian. That breadth is useful evidence to examine, but it does not mean every product feature has been audited in the same way or that an audit guarantees perfect security.
ExpressVPN also supports apps across major desktop and mobile platforms, browser extensions, and router-level deployment. Its checkout pages advertise servers in 113 countries. Depending on the tier, dedicated IP access may be optional or included. Those details matter if you need a particular location, a stable address for a work service, or coverage for devices that cannot install a VPN application.

Is ExpressVPN safe and private?
ExpressVPN says its no-logs policy excludes browsing history, traffic destinations, metadata, DNS queries, and assigned VPN IP addresses. Its RAM-only TrustedServer architecture is intended to avoid retaining server data through ordinary disk storage, while AES-256 encryption and leak safeguards are intended to protect traffic and reduce the chance of exposing identifying network information.
“No logs” describes VPN activity, not necessarily every piece of information needed to open and maintain an account. You still need to assess the provider’s current privacy policy, payment process, support interactions, and any optional services attached to your plan. A privacy-conscious setup also includes securing your account with a strong, unique password and checking that the app’s kill switch and leak-protection settings are enabled.
What the audits establish—and what they do not
The Trust Center lists reviews by Cure53, KPMG, PwC, F-Secure, and Praetorian across different parts of the service. ExpressVPN’s audit explainer says outside firms receive access to relevant source code, infrastructure, and documentation, and that findings and retests may be published. This is more informative than relying only on a provider’s own assurances, but audit scope matters: an assessment of one app, system, or point in time is not a guarantee about every configuration or future release.

Look at what was examined, when it was examined, and whether the assessment covered infrastructure, applications, browser extensions, or a specific protocol release. A Lightway review does not automatically validate every third-party integration, and an Aircove assessment does not replace checking the firmware and model you intend to buy.
There is also a distinction between VPN activity logs and personal account data. RTINGS’ July 2026 review notes that the privacy policy allows collection and retention of some personal information, including city, postal code, device information, and email address, for stated purposes. A no-logs claim about browsing activity should not be read as a claim that the provider collects no information at all.
ExpressVPN’s Trust Center says: “Our biannual transparency reports provide information on user-data requests received by our legal department.” Transparency reporting and independent assessments are useful signals, but privacy-conscious readers should still review the current policy and decide whether the account information collected for service operation is acceptable to them.
What is Lightway, and does it make ExpressVPN more secure?
Lightway is ExpressVPN’s proprietary VPN protocol. The provider describes it as designed to connect quickly, use fewer resources, and maintain sessions when a device moves between Wi-Fi and mobile networks. That can be useful for a phone that moves between home Wi-Fi and cellular data, but those are design goals; the experience depends on the device, network, server, and protocol mode.
The core code is open source. ExpressVPN documents a Rust reimplementation, use of wolfSSL cryptography, independent assessments by Cure53 and Praetorian—including assessments after the Rust rewrite—and ML-KEM post-quantum support. ML-KEM is intended to help protect key exchange against future cryptanalytic advances. These are relevant engineering details, but they should be separated from independent speed measurements: a protocol’s design or cryptographic features do not by themselves show how fast it will be on a particular connection.

When troubleshooting, compare Lightway settings rather than assuming the protocol name describes one fixed implementation. Standard Lightway and Lightway Turbo can produce very different Windows throughput. If a connection is unstable, test another nearby server and protocol mode, then verify that DNS and IP-leak tests still show the protection you expect.
How fast is ExpressVPN?
In TechRadar’s October 2026 testing, average local download speed was 489 Mbps using standard Lightway and 1,479 Mbps using Lightway Turbo on Windows. Those figures describe that lab’s results, not a guaranteed speed, a result for every device, or a direct prediction of long-distance performance.

The gap is large enough that Windows users seeking maximum throughput should check which mode they are using rather than assuming all Lightway connections perform alike. Compare results on the devices and locations that matter to you, and include long-distance connections if those are your normal use. One local test cannot establish a universal winner against other VPNs or other protocol implementations.

Your baseline connection, Wi-Fi congestion, server distance, time of day, CPU load, and VPN app version can all change the result. Test with the same speed-test server before and after connecting, repeat at different times, and record latency as well as download speed. Upload performance and long-distance behavior may matter more than a headline local-download number for video calls, cloud backups, gaming, or remote work.
Does ExpressVPN work with Netflix and other streaming services?
TechRadar describes ExpressVPN’s streaming performance as good, but reported more dropouts than NordVPN during some trans-Atlantic viewing. That is a warning about stability in particular conditions, not evidence that streaming always fails or always works. Service catalogs, location, server availability, and streaming-provider changes can affect results.
If streaming is your main reason to subscribe, evaluate your own services and regions during the money-back period rather than relying on a single test. Check whether playback stays stable over a full viewing session, not only whether a video starts. Is ExpressVPN good for torrenting?
RTINGS’ July 2026 test-bench update gave ExpressVPN a torrenting score of 7.2. It describes torrenting as supported without a data limit, and says the service hides IP addresses and DNS queries and has a functional kill switch. These findings support calling it a decent option for torrenting, not a guarantee of anonymity or uninterrupted transfers.

A kill switch is relevant if a VPN connection drops, because it can help prevent traffic from continuing outside the tunnel. Users should confirm the feature is enabled and understand how it behaves on their particular device. Test it with a harmless download before relying on it, and check that torrent software is not allowed to bypass the VPN through split-tunneling or a separate network interface.
A VPN also does not make unlawful sharing lawful, and it cannot protect against risks unrelated to the network connection. Keep torrent software updated, avoid unknown files, and remember that peers can still identify activity associated with the VPN endpoint even when your home IP is hidden.
