First identify the game. EXODUS is the upcoming single-player, third-person sci-fi action-adventure RPG from Archetype Entertainment and Wizards of the Coast. Its official FAQ lists an April 7, 2027 release for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam and Epic Games Store, but as of October 30, 2026 it does not publish a live PC settings menu, official PC requirements table or benchmark profile. The practical settings guidance available today applies to Metro Exodus, the released game with documented PC graphics analysis.
For Metro Exodus, start with the settings that consume the most GPU time: output resolution or internal render scale, ray tracing and the broad Quality preset. Then test an in-game upscaler such as DLSS or FSR where your edition exposes it. Change one major option at a time, check frame-time consistency in a repeatable demanding scene, and stop lowering image quality once the game meets your sustainable frame-rate target.
Which game do you mean by “Exodus”?
EXODUS and Metro Exodus are separate games, and their graphics advice cannot be substituted for one another.

The official EXODUS FAQ describes a single-player, third-person sci-fi action-adventure RPG. It gives an April 7, 2027 launch date and lists PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam and Epic Games Store. As of October 30, 2026, that FAQ does not include a live PC graphics-settings menu, official PC requirements table or measured performance profile. Any “best settings” list claiming exact EXODUS PC values before those details are published is necessarily speculative.

Metro Exodus (the released game)
Metro Exodus has PC technical analysis covering its Quality preset, ray tracing, graphics API and upscaling trade-offs. The instructions in this guide therefore refer to Metro Exodus. Confirm whether your installation is the original release or Enhanced Edition before changing settings: menus and ray-tracing behavior are not guaranteed to be identical between editions.
What should I collect before changing Metro Exodus settings?
Write down the configuration and the result you want. A setting that is ideal for a 1080p monitor may be unsuitable at 4K, and the original and Enhanced Edition can expose different options.
- GPU model and VRAM: note the exact card and memory amount.
- CPU and system RAM: CPU limits can appear in busy scenes even when the GPU is not fully occupied.
- Display: record resolution, refresh rate and whether variable-refresh display features are available.
- Edition and API: identify the original release or Enhanced Edition and whether the game offers DX11, DX12 or both.
- Target: choose a sustainable frame-rate goal rather than an occasional peak. Your target should fit the display and the responsiveness you need.
These details are more useful than copying a preset from a different PC. PC Gamer’s analysis specifically found hardware-dependent variation, while Apple’s WWDC21 graphics-performance session presents Metro Exodus as a case study in measurement and profiling rather than a universal preset.
How do I establish a reliable baseline?
Measure the current profile before making changes. If your installed version includes a benchmark, use it; otherwise select a repeatable demanding scene, such as the same location and route each time.
- Set the display resolution and quality options to the values you currently use.
- Run the same benchmark or scene for the same duration on every pass.
- Record average FPS and, if your overlay exposes it, frame-time behavior. Note visible ghosting, shimmering, image softness and input responsiveness.
- Close background workloads and keep driver and game versions unchanged while comparing settings.
- Change one major option, repeat the run and record the new result. Changing several options at once prevents you from knowing which trade-off helped.
A high average FPS number does not prove that play feels smooth. A short hitch, an uneven frame-time graph or distracting reconstruction artifacts can be more noticeable than a small difference in the average.
Which Metro Exodus settings should I lower first?
Lower the most expensive controls first, then make smaller image-quality compromises. Resolution and ray tracing generally have the greatest impact; upscaling and frame generation can recover performance when the installed game and hardware support them.

1. Output resolution or internal render scale
Native resolution gives the clearest image but asks the GPU to shade more pixels. If native resolution misses your target, test the game’s supported upscaler or internal render-scale control before cutting many unrelated quality settings. Upscaling renders the scene at a lower internal resolution and reconstructs it for the display, so inspect fine detail, foliage and motion for shimmer or ghosting after each mode change.

2. Ray tracing
Ray tracing is one of the largest GPU costs in general graphics guidance, and Metro Exodus analysis treats it as a demanding option. Test the available ray-tracing levels in your edition. If frame-time spikes or sustained FPS remain below target, reduce the level or disable ray tracing in the original release. Do not assume that the original and Enhanced Edition provide the same toggle: verify what the installed menu actually shows.
PC Gamer’s 2019 test illustrates the scale of this trade-off on its hardware: an RTX 2080 Ti reached 49 FPS at 4K Ultra and 31 FPS with Ultra ray tracing. Those are historical source figures, not a prediction for your GPU, driver, edition or scene.
3. The Quality preset
Quality can alter several underlying image-quality systems at once. PC Gamer reported an increase of up to 70–80% in framerate when moving from Ultra to Low, depending on GPU and other settings. That range describes its test conditions, not a guaranteed gain. Use the preset as a quick way to find a workable performance band, then raise individual options that matter most to you.
4. Secondary options
After resolution, upscaling and ray tracing are settled, adjust the remaining exposed controls. Depending on edition and menu, these can include motion blur, shading rate, tessellation, foliage and related detail settings. PC Gamer’s analysis counted nine graphics settings and noted that some have little performance effect. Keep a setting high when its visual benefit is noticeable and its measured cost is small; lower settings that consume time without improving the scenes you care about.
How should I tune Metro Exodus step by step?
Use this order so that each change answers a specific performance question.

- Choose the target. Decide the frame rate and image quality you want at your display’s resolution.
- Run the baseline. Use the built-in benchmark if your version has one, or a repeatable demanding scene. Capture average FPS, frame-time behavior and artifacts.
- Test native resolution. If it misses the target, keep a note of the deficit rather than immediately lowering every option.
- Enable an available upscaler. Compare its quality modes at the same output resolution. Select the highest-quality mode that reaches the target without objectionable ghosting, shimmer or softness.
- Set ray tracing deliberately. Compare the available levels. Disable or reduce it if the frame-time cost is larger than the visual improvement you want.
- Adjust Quality. Move the broad preset down one step if necessary, then restore individual detail options whose visual value justifies their cost.
- Fine-tune secondary settings. Test motion blur, shading-rate, tessellation, foliage and similar controls one at a time when they are exposed by your edition.
- Compare APIs. Run an identical scene in DX11 and DX12 if both are available. Keep the API that is more consistent on your hardware; do not assume one is universally faster.
- Apply a sustainable cap. If the system can exceed the target but delivery is uneven, cap FPS at a value it can hold in demanding scenes. Use the game or driver synchronization option that suits your display. There is no source-supported universal cap or latency setting.
- Verify after loading several scenes. A profile that is smooth in an empty corridor may fail in a heavier area. Recheck frame times, image artifacts and input response before keeping the changes.
Is DLSS or FSR better for Metro Exodus?
Neither is automatically better. The correct choice depends on the upscaler exposed by your edition, GPU support, quality mode and the artifacts you find acceptable.
| Option | What it does | Compatibility evidence | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| DLSS | Reconstructs a lower internal render to the selected output resolution. | NVIDIA’s App documentation lists Metro Exodus among titles with DLSS override support; available choices depend on driver and app state. | Compare detail stability, ghosting, sharpening and input response at each exposed mode. |
| FSR upscaling | Reconstructs a lower-resolution render when the game integrates the feature. | AMD’s documentation lists FSR 3 upscaling support for Radeon RX 590 and newer, but GPU support alone does not prove that Metro Exodus exposes it. | Confirm the option exists in the installed build, then inspect motion, foliage and fine geometry for shimmer or softness. |
FSR support is conditional: AMD states that FSR 3 requires developer integration and is available in select games. The listed GPU generations describe documented support, not a promise that every title or edition contains the feature. Test only options that actually appear in your game or driver.
Should I use frame generation?
Frame generation can increase displayed frame rate by inserting generated frames, but the experience depends on the underlying rendered frame rate and the game’s implementation. Treat it as a conditional option after you have established a reasonable base frame rate, not as a substitute for fixing a severely GPU-bound configuration.
- Check whether your edition exposes frame generation and whether your GPU and driver meet that feature’s requirements.
- Evaluate responsiveness separately from the displayed FPS. Added frames do not automatically make input feel as responsive as a natively rendered frame at the same rate.
- Look for disocclusion errors, UI artifacts and motion instability in the scenes you actually play.
- Keep frame generation off if its artifacts or latency outweigh the smoother animation on your system.
AMD’s FSR documentation lists FSR 3 frame generation for Radeon RX 5000 Series and newer, while noting that developer integration is required. That is a capability statement, not evidence that a particular Metro Exodus build offers the mode.
Is DX11 or DX12 faster in Metro Exodus?
There is no universal winner. PC Gamer’s tested hardware showed no benefit from DX11, but the analysis warns that older hardware may behave differently. Treat the API as a compatibility experiment: use the same resolution, quality, scene and cap in each mode, then keep the one with better consistency and fewer hitches on your PC.
Switching APIs can change shader caches, driver behavior and scene traversal. Allow the game to settle before judging a run, and compare more than one demanding area. A small average-FPS difference is less important than repeatable frame times and reliable input response.

Why can Metro Exodus stutter when average FPS is high?
Average FPS hides short stalls. Stutter can come from uneven frame delivery, a scene-specific GPU load, CPU work, shader compilation or an API/driver interaction. The available guidance supports measuring frame-time behavior, but it does not establish one universal cause or fix for every PC.
- Repeat the same route and watch a frame-time graph rather than only the average FPS counter.
- Test ray tracing and resolution first because they can create large GPU-time swings.
- Compare an upscaler’s quality modes; a mode that raises the average but introduces reconstruction artifacts or uneven delivery is not an improvement.
- Try DX11 and DX12 separately when both are exposed, especially on older hardware.
- Check whether the hitch occurs in one scene or everywhere. A scene-specific issue calls for a profile that remains stable in that scene, not merely a higher menu benchmark number.
- Use a sustainable FPS cap if the GPU repeatedly oscillates between an uncapped peak and a lower floor.
What settings make sense for different hardware situations?
Use these as decision paths, not universal presets.
Native resolution is close to the target
Keep native output, reduce or disable ray tracing if necessary, and lower the broad Quality preset only after testing that expensive option. This preserves reconstruction-free detail while addressing the largest cost.
Native resolution is well below the target
Test the highest-quality supported upscaling mode first. If the image remains acceptable but performance is still short, reduce ray tracing and then the Quality preset. Lowering several small options before addressing internal resolution usually gives a poorer trade-off.
The GPU has limited VRAM or older hardware
Favor a stable frame time over an Ultra label. Test DX11 and DX12 rather than assuming the newer API wins, and expect the result to differ from modern-GPU analysis. Keep a written baseline because a large preset change can alter several systems simultaneously.

How do I verify that a profile is actually smoother?
Verification is a repeatable comparison, not a single screenshot of an FPS counter.
- Return to the same demanding route used for the baseline.
- Run long enough to include traversal, combat or other heavy activity relevant to your play.
- Compare frame-time consistency, not just the mean FPS.
- Inspect distant foliage, thin geometry, reflections and moving characters for shimmer, ghosting or softness introduced by upscaling.
- Check input response with and without frame generation if you enabled it.
- Load another demanding scene to ensure the profile is not overfit to one location.
Keep the highest image-quality profile that meets your sustainable target across those checks. If a change improves only the average while making delivery or artifacts worse, revert it.
What is known about EXODUS PC graphics settings right now?
As of October 30, 2026, the official EXODUS FAQ supplies the game’s description, platforms and planned April 7, 2027 launch date, but not a live PC menu, official requirements or benchmark results. That means Metro Exodus recommendations should not be presented as EXODUS presets. Recheck the official FAQ and later PC documentation when EXODUS approaches launch; settings, upscalers, ray tracing support and requirements may change before release.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHow we chose the tuning priorities
The order follows the documented performance levers and compatibility limits: resolution and ray tracing carry high GPU cost; upscaling and frame generation can buy performance back when integrated and supported; Metro Exodus’s Quality preset changes multiple image-quality systems; and hardware, edition, driver, API and scene all affect the result. The workflow therefore measures a repeatable baseline, changes one major variable at a time and evaluates frame-time consistency and artifacts alongside average FPS.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I copy a Metro Exodus preset to EXODUS?
No. They are different games from different development contexts, and the official EXODUS FAQ had not published a PC settings menu or requirements table by October 30, 2026. Wait for EXODUS-specific documentation rather than treating Metro values as defaults.
Does a newer graphics card guarantee smooth Metro Exodus performance?
No. The result still depends on resolution, ray-tracing level, edition, driver, CPU load and the particular scene. A faster GPU can leave a CPU or frame-time bottleneck unchanged.
Is lowering every setting to Low the best way to remove stutter?
Not necessarily. The Quality preset can affect many systems, while some individual options have little performance effect. Start with resolution, ray tracing and upscaling, then make measured secondary changes so you do not sacrifice image quality without a useful frame-time improvement.
How often should I revisit my graphics profile?
Recheck it after changing the game edition, graphics driver, display resolution or a major game update. Those changes can alter available upscalers, API behavior or the scenes that determine your sustainable target.
