For a straightforward uppercase conversion, use =UPPER(A2). Choose Flash Fill when you can demonstrate the desired result with an example and Excel recognizes the pattern. UPPER is a formula; Flash Fill infers and fills a pattern from examples. Microsoft documents both features but does not publish a head-to-head speed or accuracy comparison.

Convert text to uppercase with UPPER
Microsoft defines UPPER as a function that “Converts text to uppercase.” Its syntax is UPPER(text); the single required argument can be a cell reference or a text string. For example, if A2 contains total, =UPPER(A2) returns TOTAL. If it contains Yield, the result is YIELD.
- Select an empty cell beside the source text, such as B2.
- Enter
=UPPER(A2)and press Enter. - To apply the same conversion to more rows, copy or fill the formula down the column.

Use Flash Fill from an example
Flash Fill is useful when you want Excel to infer a transformation from the output you demonstrate. Microsoft illustrates it with combining first and last names; its older guidance also describes using case sensitivity to change text case. The workflow for uppercase conversion is example-driven:

- Put the desired uppercase result beside the original value. For example, if A2 contains
north, enterNORTHin B2. - Begin entering the desired result for the next row. Excel may recognize the pattern and preview results for the remaining rows.
- Review the preview. If it matches the results you want, press Enter to accept it.
You can also select Data > Flash Fill or press Ctrl+E to start Flash Fill manually. Microsoft says consistent input helps Flash Fill work well; check its proposed results rather than assuming every irregular entry will be handled as intended. If Flash Fill is unavailable
On Windows, check whether automatic Flash Fill is enabled: go to File > Options > Advanced, then look for Automatically Flash Fill. If it is off, enable it. You can also invoke Flash Fill manually with Data > Flash Fill or Ctrl+E. The setting path is documented for the Windows interface; labels and availability may differ by platform. Which Excel versions are listed by Microsoft?
The cited English-language Microsoft Support pages list UPPER for Excel for Microsoft 365, Excel 2024, 2021, 2019, and 2016, including the Mac editions shown on that page. The Flash Fill usage page lists Microsoft 365, Excel 2024, 2021, and 2019, plus the Mac editions listed there. Its enablement page lists Microsoft 365, Excel 2024, and 2021 and documents the Windows setting path. These support-page lists are not a guarantee for every platform or localized interface.
