There is no universally best fabric for an AI cluster. Choose between InfiniBand and a purpose-built AI Ethernet design by comparing how each performs on your workloads, at your target scale, and under congestion and failures—and by accounting for the network your team can operate. NVIDIA positions Quantum InfiniBand for dedicated, tightly coupled training and Spectrum-X Ethernet for AI-cloud and multitenant use; those are vendor recommendations, not independent proof that either is always faster or less expensive.
First, separate the cluster fabric from GPU links
This decision concerns the scale-out network connecting servers or racks. It is not the same as the high-bandwidth scale-up links connecting GPUs within a server or rack. NVIDIA describes NVLink separately from its Quantum InfiniBand and Spectrum-X Ethernet networking products.
InfiniBand is a network technology and fabric family. Ethernet is a broad link and networking ecosystem, not one specific AI-cluster design. In particular, an Ethernet fabric intended for distributed AI workloads is not necessarily equivalent to a conventional Ethernet network with default settings.

What the two choices mean in practice
InfiniBand
InfiniBand is often evaluated for tightly coupled training and HPC workloads that generate frequent, coordinated communication among accelerators. NVIDIA describes its Quantum-2 InfiniBand fabric as offering low latency, adaptive routing, congestion control, and SHARP in-network aggregation. These are vendor descriptions of its platform and features; they do not establish a universal performance advantage over a well-designed Ethernet fabric.

AI-oriented Ethernet
Ethernet can carry remote direct memory access traffic using RoCEv2, which transports RDMA over UDP/IP/Ethernet. Getting predictable behavior at cluster scale depends on engineering the whole network: congestion response, routing or load balancing, telemetry, performance isolation, and the supported adapter, switch, and software combination.
NVIDIA describes Spectrum-X as standard Ethernet augmented with RoCE extensions, adaptive routing, and congestion control. The Ultra Ethernet Consortium (UEC) is developing an open communications stack intended to extend Ethernet for AI and HPC at scale. Its stated mission is to deliver an “Ethernet based open, interoperable, high performance, full-communications stack architecture” for those demands. That statement describes the consortium’s goal, not a benchmark or a guarantee that all Ethernet products interoperate.

Why congestion design matters
In an October 2025 article, the UEC characterized RoCEv2 deployments as using ECN and PFC for congestion response, and raised concerns about PFC head-of-line blocking and limited real-time congestion signaling in large or bursty cluster scenarios. Treat that as the consortium’s account of the challenges, not as a complete assessment of every RoCEv2 implementation. The practical question is whether the specific fabric you are evaluating handles your traffic patterns and congestion conditions acceptably.
Compare the options on the same terms
Use a matched evaluation rather than relying on headline claims or the labels “Ethernet” and “InfiniBand.” The following questions turn the choice into a workload and operations decision.

| Decision area | What to establish |
|---|---|
| Workload and scale | Is the cluster for tightly coupled distributed training, inference, mixed HPC and AI, or a cloud service? Test at the expected job size and cluster scale. |
| Communication behavior | Measure throughput, latency, and tail latency using the actual collective operations and communication patterns, not just isolated link or microbenchmark results. |
| Congestion and failures | Observe behavior during contention, burst traffic, link failure, and recovery. Include the effects on concurrent jobs, not only the job that creates the load. |
| Multitenancy | Determine whether simultaneous jobs can be isolated sufficiently and whether one tenant’s traffic can disrupt another’s performance. |
| Operations | Compare available telemetry, deployment and troubleshooting tools, staff experience, and the work needed to keep the fabric tuned. |
| Interoperability | Qualify the exact adapters, switches, optics or cables, drivers, firmware, and software stack together. An open or familiar ecosystem does not make every combination compatible. |
| Lifecycle cost | Include hardware, optics, power, support, spares, staffing, qualification, and migration over the intended service life. No neutral matched-cost comparison is established here. |
Run the same workload, job size, topology, scale, and oversubscription assumptions on both candidates. Record results under normal load and under contention, then repeat relevant tests with failures and recovery. A result from one topology or job mix should not be generalized to a different cluster design.
Which fabric fits which scenario?
Dedicated, tightly coupled training
Evaluate InfiniBand when the cluster is dedicated to demanding distributed training, a high-performance fabric aligns with the GPU platform, and your team can operate its tooling. NVIDIA explicitly recommends Quantum InfiniBand for maximum-performance training. Treat that as NVIDIA’s product recommendation and validate performance against your own workload.

AI cloud or multitenant service
Evaluate purpose-built Ethernet when familiar Ethernet and IP operations, multivendor procurement, or integration with an existing Ethernet environment matter. Confirm the specific platform’s congestion controls, routing or load balancing, telemetry, isolation mechanisms, and supported software stack. “Ethernet” alone does not establish that these features are present or configured for AI traffic.

Benchmark both fabrics at the target scale before committing. Include collective communication, contention, failures, maintenance, interoperability qualification, power, and lifecycle cost in the comparison. The available material does not establish a neutral head-to-head performance or total-cost winner.

Existing network investment
Account for the skills and infrastructure you already have: control plane, cabling and optics inventory, software qualifications, supplier support, and migration downtime. Existing Ethernet investment can be relevant, but it does not by itself demonstrate that a particular Ethernet design will meet AI-cluster performance or isolation requirements. Likewise, an existing InfiniBand environment may reduce the operational disruption of extending that fabric. Put the real transition work and quotations into the comparison.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to verify before procurement
- Ask each supplier to define the exact topology, supported scale, oversubscription, traffic-management configuration, and software versions behind its proposal.
- Request workload-relevant measurements, including tail latency and behavior during contention, link failure, and recovery; establish how each measurement was obtained.
- Confirm which adapters, switches, transceivers or cables, firmware, drivers, and collective-communication software are qualified together.
- For a multitenant design, test isolation with concurrent jobs and determine how operators detect and resolve performance problems.
- Obtain deployment-specific lifecycle estimates that include power, support, spares, staffing, training, and migration—not just switch and adapter prices.
The UEC site lists specification version 1.0.3. A specification version alone does not establish which implementations are available, interoperable, or supported in a proposed deployment; verify current product and support matrices with the relevant vendors.
