There is no single best file-encryption product for every enterprise. Microsoft Purview Information Protection is the strongest starting point for a Microsoft 365 estate; Symantec Encryption fits PGP, email, endpoint and automated-transfer workflows; Trellix is designed for endpoint and removable-media control; Box KeySafe and Egnyte suit governed cloud content with customer-controlled key services; Virtru emphasizes persistent control over files shared outside the company; and Tresorit is the clearest choice when provider-inaccessible, zero-knowledge encryption is the requirement.

The right decision depends on the encryption boundary you need, who must control keys, whether users work in Microsoft or Google productivity suites, how external recipients should access files, and what recovery and audit operations your security team can support. The comparison below uses capabilities documented by the vendors and identifies where architectures differ rather than treating every product as interchangeable.

What should “best enterprise file encryption” mean in 2026?

Enterprise file encryption is not one feature. A product may encrypt files on endpoints, protect email attachments, secure cloud content at rest, enforce policy while a document is being shared, or keep the service provider from possessing a decryption path. Those are different security boundaries, so a product that is excellent for one may be a poor fit for another.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Where is data? Include laptops, removable drives, network shares, SaaS repositories, on-premises stores, email and automated transfers.
  • Who controls keys? A customer-managed key can put key custody in your cloud account or hardware-security module, while a zero-knowledge design aims to prevent the provider from decrypting user content at all.
  • What happens during sharing? External recipients may need expiry, download restrictions, revocation, watermarking or a controlled portal rather than a permanent attachment.
  • How will operations work? Identity integration, policy administration, audit records, data-loss prevention, legal hold, backup recovery and incident response matter as much as the cipher.

Enterprise licensing is generally plan- and quote-dependent in the product material considered here. Ask vendors to confirm current editions, regional availability, certifications, integrations and partner support before signing.

Which seven platforms are most relevant to enterprise use?

The table is a shortlist by architectural fit, not an unsupported overall ranking. “Provider access” describes what the published design establishes; it does not replace a review of your contract, tenant configuration and key-management procedures.

Platform Best fit Key and provider-access model Protected data and channels Deployment and integrations
Microsoft Purview Information Protection Microsoft 365-centric estates Sensitivity-label encryption, Customer Key and Double Key Encryption options; custody and access depend on tenant configuration Documents, email, endpoints, SharePoint and other Microsoft workloads; DLP and on-premises repositories are supported in the documented stack Microsoft security and compliance services, SharePoint IRM and endpoint protection
Symantec Encryption PGP-based file, email, endpoint and automated-transfer programs Centralized key and policy management for PGP Encryption Suite, gateway email encryption and command-line encryption Endpoints, email, file shares and automated data flows Enterprise-managed PGP components, gateways and command-line workflows
Trellix Data Encryption Endpoint and removable-media control Central administration with policy and compliance reporting Files, folders, network shares, removable media, BitLocker and FileVault-managed devices Central management for endpoint and removable-media protection
Box KeySafe Box customers requiring independent customer-managed keys Customer keys through AWS KMS, Google Cloud KMS or HSMs; Box still mediates platform workflows Box content; file content is encrypted, while some metadata and search functions have separate limitations Box SaaS with an unchangeable audit log and content kill switch
Virtru Data Security Platform Persistent control over externally shared files and email End-to-end encryption with private-keystore hosting options Files and email shared through supported Microsoft and Google integrations; Secure Share supports files up to 15 GB Microsoft and Google integrations, revocation, expiry, watermarks and recipient controls
Tresorit Enterprise Zero-knowledge collaboration Files and relevant metadata are encrypted on user devices; keys remain inaccessible to the provider, which states its servers cannot decrypt user files Cloud collaboration content and shared files Sharing controls include expiry, access limits, download restrictions and audit-oriented controls
Egnyte Secure Content Platform Governed content collaboration with enterprise key management Integration with Azure Key Vault and AWS CloudHSM for enterprise key management Cloud content protected with AES-256 at rest and in transit, TLS and governance controls Auditing, governance and external key-management integrations

How does each platform fit a particular enterprise requirement?

Microsoft Purview Information Protection: the Microsoft 365 choice

Purview is the logical first evaluation for organizations already standardized on Microsoft 365. Sensitivity labels can classify and encrypt documents and email, and the same security and compliance stack connects labeling with endpoint protection and data-loss prevention. Microsoft documents Double Key Encryption, Customer Key, SharePoint Information Rights Management and protection for Microsoft workloads and on-premises repositories.

The advantage is policy continuity: administrators can apply classification and protection rules where users already create and share content. The design still requires careful tenant and key planning. Customer Key and Double Key Encryption are distinct options, so determine which data paths each protects, who operates the keys, and what recovery procedure applies before enabling them broadly.

Symantec Encryption: PGP across files, mail and automated transfers

Symantec’s portfolio is aimed at enterprises that need OpenPGP-style controls across several channels rather than only a cloud content repository. The documented components include PGP Encryption Suite, PGP Gateway Email Encryption and PGP Command Line Encryption, with centralized key and policy management.

This makes it suitable for partner exchanges, scheduled jobs, file shares, gateway email and endpoint workflows where PGP compatibility is a contractual or technical requirement. Plan the operating model up front: key enrollment, rotation, revocation, escrow and command-line job ownership become shared responsibilities across security, messaging and integration teams.

Trellix Data Encryption: endpoint and removable-media governance

Trellix is the strongest fit when the main exposure is data leaving managed computers on USB media, local disks or network shares. Its documented administration covers File and Removable Media Protection for files, folders, network shares and removable media, alongside centralized management and compliance reporting.

It also manages BitLocker and FileVault in the endpoint-encryption program. That combination helps standardize full-disk and file-level controls without treating removable storage as an afterthought. Validate how policies behave for offline devices, contractor computers and recovery keys during a pilot, because those operational cases determine whether protection remains usable away from the corporate network.

Box KeySafe: independent keys for Box content

KeySafe lets a Box customer use keys from AWS Key Management Service, Google Cloud KMS or a hardware-security module to protect content stored in Box. Box documents an unchangeable audit log and a content kill switch, which are valuable for investigations and emergency containment.

Customer-managed keys do not turn Box into a zero-knowledge service. Box continues to mediate storage, sharing and application workflows, and its documentation notes separate limitations for some metadata and search functions. Confirm which metadata remains available for indexing, discovery and legal processes, and test the kill-switch procedure with a nonproduction folder before relying on it for incident response.

Virtru Data Security Platform: persistent control after sharing

Virtru focuses on keeping controls attached to files and email beyond the original sender’s environment. Its documented capabilities include end-to-end encryption, revocation, expiry, watermarks, private-keystore hosting and integrations with Microsoft and Google environments. Secure Share accepts files up to 15 GB; Virtru reported more than 6,000 organizations in 2026.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This model is useful when a recipient is outside the company and the sender must be able to withdraw access or impose a time limit. Before deployment, test recipient identity proofing, browser and mobile behavior, forwarding, downloads, watermark visibility and what a revoked user sees when an already-downloaded copy is opened. Encryption cannot recall an unprotected photograph or screenshot, so pair technical controls with an external-sharing policy.

Tresorit Enterprise: provider-inaccessible, zero-knowledge collaboration

Tresorit states that files and relevant metadata are encrypted on users’ devices and that its servers cannot decrypt user files. That is the defining distinction for organizations whose threat model includes the collaboration provider itself. Sharing controls include expiration, access limits, download restrictions and audit-oriented features.

Zero-knowledge encryption changes the recovery conversation. If the provider cannot decrypt content, your identity, device and account-recovery design must preserve legitimate access without creating a hidden provider backdoor. Test onboarding, offboarding, lost-device recovery, administrator visibility and regulated discovery with representative teams before moving critical repositories.

Egnyte Secure Content Platform: governed collaboration with external key services

Egnyte documents AES-256 encryption at rest and in transit, TLS, auditing and governance, with integrations for Azure Key Vault and AWS CloudHSM. It is aimed at organizations that need a governed content collaboration platform while retaining enterprise control over key infrastructure.

Evaluate Egnyte alongside your records-retention, data-residency and access-review processes. External key services improve custody and separation, but they do not by themselves establish zero-knowledge operation; map every service workflow that needs key access and define what happens if the key service is unavailable.

What is the difference between customer-managed keys and zero-knowledge encryption?

Customer-managed keys mean the organization controls keys, or delegates their custody to a cloud KMS or HSM under its account and policies. The application may still request decryption operations so users can search, preview, synchronize or share content. Box KeySafe and Egnyte illustrate this platform-mediated model, and Purview offers Customer Key and Double Key Encryption options with different trust boundaries.

Zero-knowledge encryption is a stronger provider-access claim: encryption and decryption occur on user devices, and the provider does not possess usable keys for customer files. Tresorit explicitly describes this architecture. It can reduce provider-side exposure, but it also limits provider-assisted recovery, indexing and some administrative workflows.

Ask vendors to answer these questions in writing:

  • Can support personnel, administrators or automated services obtain plaintext under any documented workflow?
  • Where are encryption keys generated, stored, cached and backed up?
  • Can the provider search, preview, thumbnail or classify encrypted content?
  • What metadata remains visible even when file content is encrypted?
  • How are legal hold, e-discovery, account recovery and emergency access handled?

How should an enterprise choose among the seven?

Start with the dominant data path

  • Choose a Purview proof of concept when Microsoft 365 labels, DLP and SharePoint are the center of gravity.
  • Choose Symantec when PGP compatibility, gateway email or automated file-transfer jobs are non-negotiable.
  • Choose Trellix when endpoint disks, USB media and network shares create the largest operational risk.
  • Choose Box KeySafe or Egnyte when governed SaaS content and independent KMS or HSM control are the primary requirements.
  • Choose Virtru when external recipients need revocation, expiry, watermarks and persistent controls across shared files or email.
  • Choose Tresorit when the provider’s inability to decrypt is a hard requirement, not merely a preference for customer-controlled keys.

Map identity and productivity integrations

Document every identity provider, directory group, mobile platform, desktop client, mail system, storage repository and business automation that must participate. A technically strong cipher is not enough if users bypass it to complete work. For each shortlisted platform, test single sign-on, joiner-mover-leaver events, group-based policy, guest access and service accounts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Separate content protection from endpoint protection

Cloud collaboration encryption does not automatically protect a file copied to an unmanaged laptop. Conversely, full-disk encryption does not provide revocation after an attachment is sent. Use the data-flow map to decide whether you need one platform, complementary controls or a deliberately limited scope.

How can you run a defensible enterprise pilot?

  1. Define test data. Include a confidential document, an email attachment, a large file, a file with sensitive metadata, a network-share item and a removable-media scenario where relevant.
  2. Build the identity model. Create administrator, employee, contractor, guest and service-account roles. Test onboarding, role changes and immediate termination.
  3. Configure keys and recovery. Record where keys live, who can approve use, how rotation works, how backups are protected and how an emergency recovery is authorized.
  4. Exercise sharing. Send files to internal users, external partners and a deliberately untrusted test account. Verify expiry, revocation, download limits, forwarding behavior and watermarking.
  5. Test offline and degraded operation. Disconnect a laptop, disable the KMS integration in a controlled window and test what users can open, what administrators can recover and what audit events are generated.
  6. Inspect visibility. Confirm which content, filenames, metadata, search indexes, thumbnails and diagnostic records are visible to the provider and to your administrators.
  7. Measure operational workload. Record help-desk contacts, policy exceptions, recovery time, audit-review effort and the steps required to rotate or revoke keys.
  8. Write the acceptance decision. Tie each requirement to observed evidence, an owner and a remediation deadline. Do not approve a platform solely because it passed a file-upload test.

Which controls prevent the most common deployment failures?

  • Lost keys or inaccessible data: maintain documented escrow or recovery procedures appropriate to the selected architecture, and rehearse them with security and legal stakeholders.
  • Overbroad external sharing: default to named recipients, short expiries and download restrictions; require an exception for anonymous or permanent links.
  • Search and discovery surprises: identify encrypted-content and metadata limitations before moving regulated records, then design a lawful export and review process.
  • Stale access after staff changes: connect encryption policy to the identity lifecycle and verify that disabled accounts lose access promptly.
  • Unprotected copies: classify download, print, screen-capture and local-sync risks; combine technical controls with user training and records policy.
  • Key-service outages: define availability objectives, break-glass approvals and communications for KMS, HSM or identity failures.
  • False equivalence between products: document whether each control protects content, metadata, endpoints, transport or the recipient experience. “Encrypted” is not a complete control description.

What should procurement verify before signing?

Request the current product edition, licensing metric, regional hosting options, service-level terms, supported operating systems, identity integrations, audit retention, export formats, key-rotation behavior, recovery responsibilities and subcontractor access. Ask for the exact certifications and attestations that apply to your region and plan; do not infer them from a product family name.

Have legal, privacy, records-management and security teams review the trust model together. A customer-managed key may satisfy separation-of-duties requirements while still permitting platform decryption, whereas a zero-knowledge design may create additional obligations for recovery and discovery. Make that trade-off explicit in the architecture record.

Which platform is the practical starting point?

For most enterprises, the shortlist should be narrowed by data path rather than by a generic score. Microsoft 365 organizations should test Purview first; PGP-heavy integration programs should test Symantec; endpoint and removable-media programs should test Trellix. Box and Egnyte are candidates for governed cloud repositories with external key services, Virtru for controlled external sharing, and Tresorit when provider-inaccessible keys are mandatory.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The final selection should be the platform whose trust boundary, recovery model and daily user workflow match your documented requirements. Require a pilot that proves those details before treating a vendor’s encryption label as an enterprise control.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can we verify whether a provider could decrypt our files?

Ask for a data-flow and key-access diagram that covers support, diagnostics, search, previews, backups and legal requests, not just storage encryption. Then validate the diagram against tenant settings, audit events and a controlled key-service test; marketing language alone is not proof of provider inaccessibility.

What belongs in an enterprise encryption key-rotation runbook?

Include approval roles, change windows, dual control, staged rollout, rollback, backup validation and the test used to open historical files after rotation. Record dependencies such as gateways, command-line jobs, mobile clients, KMS permissions and disaster-recovery environments.

Can encrypted content still be searched and indexed?

It depends on the product and the metadata boundary. Box specifically notes separate limitations for some metadata and search functions, while a zero-knowledge design generally requires more client-side processing; confirm search, previews and e-discovery behavior with your exact configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should incident response do when an external recipient is compromised?

Revoke the recipient or link, preserve the audit trail, rotate affected credentials or keys when indicated, and identify whether the recipient downloaded or copied plaintext. Treat screenshots, printed pages and files exported before revocation as separate containment problems.
