Choose Electron when your satellite fits Rocket Lab’s published 300 kg low Earth orbit (LEO) capacity and you need an operational small-launch vehicle; consider Neutron when your mission needs a much larger payload capacity and can tolerate a vehicle still in development. Rocket Lab lists Neutron at 13,000 kg to LEO, but that is a planned capability, not a demonstrated flight result. The right choice depends on more than mass: orbit, spacecraft dimensions, deployment plan, schedule and development risk all matter.

Electron vs. Neutron at a glance

The figures below are Rocket Lab’s published specifications. They describe different vehicle classes, and Neutron’s figures are design capabilities for a vehicle still being developed.

Decision factor Electron Neutron
Published payload to LEO 300 kg, according to Rocket Lab’s Electron product page accessed in 2026. 13,000 kg, according to Rocket Lab’s Neutron product page accessed in 2026; planned capability, not flight-demonstrated performance.
Intended role Dedicated small-satellite launch. Reusable medium-lift vehicle positioned for constellation, national-security and exploration missions.
Flight maturity Operational. Rocket Lab’s live Electron page displayed 97 launches and more than 268 satellites deployed on October 4, 2026. In development in Rocket Lab’s Q2 2026 filing.
Architecture and propellant Two stages plus a kick stage; LOX/kerosene. Reusable first stage, LOX/methane and a captive fairing that opens to release the second stage.
Schedule evidence Rocket Lab maintains a live launch manifest. The Q2 2026 filing targeted pad delivery in Q4 2026, while noting the end-of-year launch window was narrowing and timing depended on qualification and other critical tests.

When Electron is the better fit

Electron is the more established option for a spacecraft or deployment stack within its stated capacity when a dedicated small-satellite launch is important. Rocket Lab describes Electron as offering tailored orbits and schedule control, but those are provider descriptions, not guarantees for a particular mission. Confirm the orbit, launch slot and integration requirements with Rocket Lab.

Rocket Lab’s August 20, 2026 release identified Electron’s 93rd launch and 14th launch of that year at that point. Its live product page later showed 97 launches and more than 268 satellites deployed as of October 4, 2026. These are different counts from different dates, rather than conflicting totals.

When Neutron may fit better

Neutron is aimed at missions that need substantially more capacity than Electron’s published LEO figure, including constellation deployments. Rocket Lab lists Neutron at 43 m tall, 7 m in diameter, with a 5 m fairing diameter and 480,000 kg liftoff mass. It also publishes 1,500 kg to Mars or Venus. These are Rocket Lab’s design specifications, not independent or flight-proven performance results.

Its architecture is not simply a scaled-up Electron. Rocket Lab describes a reusable first stage powered by LOX/methane and a “Hungry Hippo” fairing that stays attached to the first stage. The fairing opens to let the second stage and payload continue, then closes for the first stage’s return. The design is intended to avoid separate fairing recovery; expected effects on turnaround, reliability or cost should not be treated as established operational results.

What Neutron’s schedule means for mission planning

In its Form 10-Q for the quarter ended June 30, 2026, Rocket Lab said Neutron qualification testing was ongoing. The filing described progress on first-flight hardware integration and readiness, Archimedes engine testing, and second-stage and reusable-fairing work. It said Stage 1 tank production was aligned with a target to deliver the rocket to the pad in Q4 2026, while the end-of-year launch window was narrowing. Rocket Lab also said exact timing depended on Stage 1 qualification and other critical tests, and warned that development risk could affect the estimate.

For a mission tied to a fixed deployment date, treat that filing as a qualified target, not a confirmed launch date or assurance that Neutron is ready to provide service. Electron’s flight heritage is relevant to maturity, but it does not by itself guarantee a particular launch slot.

How to decide for your satellite mission

  1. Check mass and envelope. Compare the full spacecraft or deployment stack—not just a single satellite’s dry mass—with the applicable payload limit and fairing constraints. Rocket Lab’s published LEO figures do not establish capacity for every orbit or mission profile.
  2. Specify the destination and deployment. Define orbit, inclination, separation sequence and whether satellites need dedicated deployment. Ask Rocket Lab to confirm mission-specific compatibility rather than assuming a general orbit capability applies.
  3. Choose a deployment model. A small spacecraft needing an individual deployment and a large constellation ride or deployment create different integration needs. Rocket Lab positions Electron for dedicated small-satellite missions and Neutron for larger missions such as constellations; the vehicle description alone does not prove a specific payload stack will fit.
  4. Set a schedule-risk threshold. If development uncertainty is unacceptable, Neutron’s qualification status and schedule dependencies are central constraints. For either vehicle, obtain confirmation of mission availability and integration milestones.
  5. Request mission-specific pricing. No comparable current public launch prices are established here. Ask for a quotation that states the assumed orbit, integration scope, schedule and deployment arrangement; do not infer price per kilogram or savings from nominal capacity or reuse.

What to ask Rocket Lab before selecting a vehicle

  • Does the complete payload and deployment hardware fit the vehicle’s mass and fairing constraints for the target orbit?
  • Can the mission achieve its required orbit and satellite separation sequence, and what dedicated-launch or rideshare arrangements are available?
  • What launch availability and integration milestones can be committed for the required date?
  • For Neutron, what qualification, readiness and schedule conditions apply to the proposed mission?
  • What does the mission-specific quote include, and which assumptions could change its price or schedule?
