For staying warm while asleep, an electric blanket is generally the better fit—but only if its manufacturer explicitly permits safe all-night use. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) advises turning portable heaters off when sleeping. A blanket warms the bed or sleeper; a room heater warms the room, so the right choice depends on whether you need a warm bed or warm room air.

At a glance

Name Best for Key spec Overnight rule Checked
Electric blanket Warming a bed or sleeper 60–100 W in the U.S. Department of Energy’s illustrative appliance table Use all night only when the exact model and its instructions explicitly permit it, including any thermostat requirement Nov 2026
Portable room heater Warming surrounding room air while you are awake 750–1,500 W in the U.S. Department of Energy’s illustrative appliance table CPSC says to turn it off when sleeping Nov 2026

The wattages are reference-table examples, not guaranteed ratings for a particular model or estimates of an individual electricity bill. The two products also heat different things: a blanket concentrates warmth in the bed, while a heater distributes heat through room air and nearby surfaces.

What is the difference between an electric blanket and a room heater?

The main difference is the heating target. An electric blanket places its heating elements in or beneath the fabric so warmth is directed to the bed and the person under it. A portable room heater releases heat into the surrounding air. That means a blanket can make a sleeper feel warm without changing the temperature of the whole room, while a heater can make the room more comfortable without directly warming the mattress or bedding as efficiently.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Neither appliance is a complete substitute for the other. If the room is cold but the bed is comfortable, a blanket will not raise the room temperature. If the bed is the only cold spot, running a heater to warm the entire room is a less targeted approach. The safest decision also depends on whether you are awake: CPSC’s U.S. guidance says portable heaters should be turned off during sleep, whereas all-night blanket use depends on the individual blanket’s design and instructions.

Choose a blanket when the bed is the cold spot

If the room is comfortable enough but the sheets feel cold, an electric blanket targets the area that needs warmth. It is the more suitable of these two options for overnight warmth only when the particular blanket’s controls and instructions allow it. Blanket designs, control systems and permitted uses can differ, so the category name alone does not establish that a model is safe to leave on all night.

Some models may have thermostat control, a timer or multiple heat settings. Those features matter only in the way the manufacturer specifies. A timer or temperature setting should not be treated as permission for unattended overnight operation unless the manual says so. If the instructions require unplugging before bed, the blanket should be unplugged even if it appears to be operating at a low setting.

Choose a room heater to warm the room while awake

If you need to warm the room itself, a portable heater serves that purpose. Use it while you are awake, present and able to follow its instructions. Keep the unit away from bedding and other combustible materials, connect it directly to a wall outlet, and turn it off before you go to sleep. CPSC’s sleep instruction still applies even when a heater has a thermostat, timer or automatic shutoff feature.

Can you sleep with a portable room heater on?

No. CPSC’s January 23, 2026 guidance says, “Turn off heaters when sleeping.” The guidance covers portable heaters, including electric space heaters, and makes a running portable heater a poor choice for keeping warm overnight. A built-in thermostat may regulate temperature, but it does not change the instruction to switch a portable heater off when you sleep.

Set up a portable heater safely while you are awake

  1. Choose a stable location. Put the heater on the surface and in the orientation specified by its maker. Do not place it where bedding, curtains, clothing or other combustible materials can fall against it.
  2. Maintain three feet of clearance. CPSC advises keeping portable heaters at least three feet from bedding and other combustible materials. Measure from the heater rather than assuming that a narrow gap is enough.
  3. Use a wall outlet. Plug an electric heater directly into a wall outlet. CPSC says not to use an extension cord or power strip. Avoid sharing the outlet in a way that could overload it.
  4. Keep controls accessible. You should be able to turn the unit off without reaching across bedding or other items. Do not cover the heater or route fabric over it.
  5. Turn it off before sleep. Switch it off when you leave the room for an extended period and always before getting into bed.

These precautions address how to use the heater; they do not make it appropriate to leave running while you sleep. CPSC lists UL 1278 as a voluntary standard for movable and wall- or ceiling-hung electric room heaters. That standard reference is useful standards context, but it is not evidence that a specific heater has been certified. Check the actual product information rather than inferring certification from the category.

What the heater-fire estimates do—and do not—show

CPSC estimated that portable heaters, including electric space heaters, were involved in an average of 1,600 fires, 70 deaths and 150 injuries per year in the United States from 2020 through 2022. Those are estimates for portable heaters across that period. They are not figures for electric blankets, do not measure risk per hour of use, and do not constitute a head-to-head safety study of heaters and blankets.

Use the figures to understand why the agency emphasizes clearance, direct wall-outlet connection and shutoff during sleep. Do not convert them into a claim that one appliance has a particular percentage lower risk than the other. No comparative study establishing an electric-blanket-versus-room-heater sleep outcome or risk rate was identified for this comparison.

Can you leave an electric blanket on all night?

Only if the blanket’s own instructions and controls explicitly permit safe all-night use. England’s Home Office advises unplugging electric blankets before getting into bed unless they have thermostat control for safe all-night use. That is England-specific guidance, and it does not establish that every blanket with a thermostat—or every blanket generally—is suitable for overnight operation.

The safest interpretation is product-specific: read the manual, label and controller instructions for the exact model. If any instruction says to unplug before sleep, follow it. If the documentation is missing, unclear or contradictory, do not assume that a low setting, timer or automatic shutoff makes overnight use acceptable. Contact the manufacturer or choose a product whose instructions clearly describe approved all-night operation.

Check the instructions for the exact blanket

Look for clear wording about sleeping use, thermostat control, maximum operating time and whether the controller must remain connected in a particular way. Keep the manual available rather than relying on a retailer’s short description. A product marketed as an “electric blanket with automatic shutoff” still needs instructions that address overnight use; an automatic shutoff feature by itself is not a universal approval.

Before bed, make sure the controller and cord are connected as directed, the blanket is arranged without folds or bunching that the instructions prohibit, and no other appliance is placed on top of it. Do not alter the wiring, splice a cord or substitute a controller. Those steps follow the basic principle of using the blanket only in the configuration the maker designed.

Inspect and care for the blanket

The England Home Office advises checking electric blankets regularly for wear and tear, storing them in a way that does not damage their internal wiring, and replacing one that is more than ten years old. Its age recommendation is guidance for England, not a universal legal requirement. The blanket’s care instructions still govern how it should be handled, folded or stored.

Inspect the fabric, plug, controller, cord and visible connections for damage before use. Pay attention to fraying, scorch marks, exposed wires, stiff or cracked sections, unusual hot spots and controls that do not work as intended. Stop using a damaged blanket and follow the maker’s replacement or service advice instead of attempting a home repair. When storing it, use the method specified by the manufacturer so the heating wires are not sharply creased, crushed or stretched.

Do not combine it with a hot-water bottle

England’s Home Office advises against using a hot-water bottle in the same bed as an electric blanket. Follow that advice along with the blanket maker’s instructions. Combining separate heat sources can create conditions the product was not designed to manage, even when each item is used correctly on its own.

Which uses less electricity?

The DOE’s educational appliance table lists an electric blanket at 60–100 watts and a space heater at 750–1,500 watts. In that table, the blanket examples have lower listed power than the heater examples. This supports a directional comparison, not a guaranteed percentage saving, current average wattage or exact cost for an individual reader.

Actual consumption depends on the specific product’s rated power, heat setting, time in operation and thermostatic cycling. A blanket may cycle on and off after reaching its setting; a heater may also cycle under thermostat control. A device rated at a particular wattage does not necessarily draw that amount continuously for the entire period. Electricity prices vary by location and tariff, so the DOE table cannot determine your bill.

Calculate an operating estimate

Use the rating plate or manual for the product’s watts, estimate the number of hours it will operate, and use your electricity price in dollars or another currency per kilowatt-hour. The basic continuous-use estimate is:

Cost = (watts ÷ 1,000) × hours × price per kilowatt-hour.

For example, substitute the blanket’s actual wattage and your expected hours rather than using the 60–100 W table range as though it were a measurement. If the product cycles, the calculation is a maximum-style estimate based on continuous rated draw; real consumption can be lower. For a fair comparison, calculate each appliance over the same number of hours and remember that they deliver different services: one warms a bed or person, while the other warms room air.

How should you decide which one to use tonight?

Start with the area that needs warming and whether you will be asleep. The decision is not simply which appliance has the larger wattage or which warms faster. Overnight safety guidance changes what is appropriate to leave on, and the manufacturer’s instructions control the blanket decision.

  • The bed is cold, and the blanket’s manual permits overnight use: The blanket is the more targeted option. Set it as directed, use the approved thermostat or controls, and inspect it regularly.
  • The bed is cold, but the blanket does not permit overnight use: Do not leave it on while sleeping. Follow the instructions for warming the bed before you get in, if provided, then unplug it before sleep.
  • The room is cold and you are awake: A room heater is designed to warm the surrounding room. Keep it at least three feet from bedding and other combustibles, plug an electric model directly into a wall outlet, and follow its operating instructions.
  • You are going to sleep and want the room warmer: Do not leave a portable heater running. A blanket is not a way to heat the whole room; use it only if that specific model is approved for overnight use.
  • You are unsure which appliance is approved: Pause and check the manual or manufacturer. Uncertainty is not a reason to override a shutoff instruction or improvise a connection.
  • You need warmth in both the room and the bed: Use a room heater only while awake and under its safety instructions, then turn it off before sleep. If an approved all-night blanket is available, it can address the sleeper without being treated as a substitute for room heating.

A practical bedtime routine

Several simple checks prevent the most common mistakes. First, identify whether the goal is warming the room or the sleeper. Second, read the overnight-use instruction for the exact blanket or heater. Third, remove combustible items from around a heater and verify the three-foot clearance. Fourth, confirm that an electric heater is connected directly to a wall outlet, not an extension cord or power strip. Finally, switch the portable heater off before getting into bed and unplug the blanket whenever its instructions require it.

If you use an approved overnight blanket, keep its controller and cord positioned exactly as the maker describes. Do not layer a hot-water bottle with it, and do not continue using it if you notice wear, damaged wiring or abnormal heating. Recheck the product’s age and condition periodically; the England Home Office’s ten-year replacement advice is a useful benchmark for readers in England, but local rules and the manufacturer’s directions may differ elsewhere.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming all electric blankets are overnight-safe: Permission depends on the model, its thermostat controls and its instructions.
  • Relying on a timer as a safety guarantee: A timer does not replace explicit manufacturer approval for sleeping use.
  • Leaving a portable heater on because the room is very cold: CPSC’s instruction to turn heaters off when sleeping still applies.
  • Using a power strip or extension cord for an electric heater: CPSC says to connect it directly to a wall outlet.
  • Putting a heater close to the bed: Maintain at least three feet from bedding and other combustible materials.
  • Treating a wattage table as a bill: Use the actual rating, runtime, settings, cycling and electricity price.
  • Ignoring an aging or damaged blanket: Check for wear and protect the wiring during storage; replace it in line with the manufacturer’s advice and applicable local guidance.
  • Reading a standard as proof of certification: UL 1278 is a voluntary standard identified by CPSC for certain electric room heaters; its mention does not verify a particular product.

Jurisdiction, standards and what the evidence can support

CPSC’s heater guidance is U.S. institutional safety advice dated January 23, 2026. The electric-blanket recommendations about unplugging before bed, thermostat-controlled all-night use, hot-water bottles, inspection, storage and replacement age come from England’s Home Office. Readers elsewhere should follow their own local safety authorities and the product instructions.

The available figures describe appliance examples and portable-heater incidents, not a controlled comparison. The DOE values are illustrative entries of 60–100 W for an electric blanket and 750–1,500 W for a space heater. CPSC’s 2020–2022 estimates cover portable heaters and should not be presented as electric-blanket statistics or as risk per hour. Keeping those limits in mind leads to a practical conclusion without overstating what the numbers prove.

Bottom line: which is better for staying warm at night?

An electric blanket is generally the more suitable of the two for warming a sleeper, provided the product’s own instructions explicitly allow all-night use. A portable room heater can warm a room while you are awake, but CPSC says to turn it off when you sleep. If the blanket is not approved for overnight use, unplug it before bed; if the room needs warming, use the heater only while awake and with the required clearance and outlet setup. Neither appliance’s wattage or marketing label overrides its safety instructions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I plug an electric heater into an extension cord or power strip?

No. CPSC says to plug an electric heater directly into a wall outlet rather than an extension cord or power strip.

How do I know whether an electric blanket can stay on all night?

Read the exact model’s manual and labels. England’s Home Office advises unplugging blankets before bed unless the model has thermostat control for safe all-night use. Do not assume a timer or low setting is sufficient without explicit manufacturer approval.

How old is too old for an electric blanket?

England’s Home Office advises replacing an electric blanket more than ten years old. That is England-specific guidance rather than a universal legal rule; also follow the manufacturer’s advice and replace any blanket showing wear or wiring damage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How can I estimate what an electric blanket will cost to run?

Use the blanket’s rated watts, expected hours of use and your electricity price. A simple continuous-use estimate is watts divided by 1,000, multiplied by hours and your price per kilowatt-hour. Thermostat cycling can make actual consumption lower, and the DOE’s 60–100 W range is illustrative rather than a bill estimate.

What does UL 1278 cover for electric heaters?

CPSC identifies UL 1278 as a voluntary standard for movable and wall- or ceiling-hung electric room heaters. The standard’s relevance does not by itself confirm that a particular heater is certified.

Will an electric blanket heat my bedroom?

No. An electric blanket targets the bed or sleeper. It does not provide the same room-air heating function as a portable room heater.

Is an electric blanket proven safer than a room heater?

The available CPSC figures estimate portable-heater incidents but do not quantify electric-blanket risk or compare the two products head to head. The practical distinction is that CPSC says to turn portable heaters off during sleep, while blanket overnight use depends on the exact product instructions.
