There is no single new fantasy RPG that replaces Elden Ring in 2026. Elden Ring remains the benchmark for a huge dark-fantasy world, deliberate stamina combat, build variety, and exploration that lets you abandon a boss and return later. Newer games are better in specific ways: Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 is the deeper role-playing simulation, Elden Ring Nightreign is the faster co-op option, and The First Berserker: Khazan, Nioh 3, Sekiro, and Black Myth: Wukong offer denser, more fluid fights. The right choice depends on three questions: how fast you want combat, how freely you want to explore, and whether failure should be solved by practice, preparation, or simply leaving and returning later.
What is the “new fantasy RPG” compared with Elden Ring in 2026?
The phrase describes several different games rather than one successor. Elden Ring is still the 2022 open-world action RPG from FromSoftware, while the 2025–2026 field includes a standalone co-op spin-off, a historically grounded role-playing game, and several faster soulslikes. Treating them as one category hides the most important differences.
Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, released on 4 February 2025 by Warhorse Studios and Deep Silver, is the closest alternative if “RPG” means reputation, dialogue, clothing, competence, and a society that remembers what you do. Elden Ring Nightreign, released on 30 May 2025, is a separate three-player action-survival game built from Elden Ring’s combat but organized into roughly 45-minute expeditions. It is not a sequel that replaces the single-player open world.
The First Berserker: Khazan, Nioh 3, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, Black Myth: Wukong, and Wuchang: Fallen Feathers target players who find Elden Ring’s attack recoveries and stamina pacing too measured. They generally provide fewer weapons or a more focused combat identity in exchange for faster chains, stricter parry windows, stance systems, or more aggressive enemy pressure.

For a broad “best RPG” discussion, Baldur’s Gate 3 emphasizes party agency and branching decisions, while The Witcher 3 emphasizes authored quests and character-driven travel. Neither is a direct replacement for Elden Ring’s combat-and-discovery loop.
New fantasy RPG vs Elden Ring: combat, exploration, and difficulty compared
| Axis | Elden Ring (2022, Shadow of the Erdtree, 2026 Tarnished Edition) | Elden Ring Nightreign (2025) | Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 (2025) | Faster 2025–2026 soulslikes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Combat tempo | Slow-to-mid, stamina-locked attacks with significant animation commitment; enormous weapon, spell, and skill variety. | Elden Ring fundamentals with faster movement, class skills, ultimates, and brisker equipment handling. | Grounded melee affected by armor, wounds, physics, and positioning; fights support a simulation rather than boss spectacle. | Combo, stance, parry, or deflect pressure is usually higher; weapon rosters are often narrower. |
| Exploration | Landmark-led open world, Torrent, mini-dungeons, Legacy Dungeons, underground regions, and optional routes. | Timed Limveld expeditions inside a shrinking Night’s Tide circle; map knowledge matters more than leisurely wandering. | A lived-in Bohemia where reputation, merchants, guards, clothing, and injuries affect travel. | Often chapter, mission, or boss-gauntlet structures with a weaker “ride toward that silhouette” loop. |
| Difficulty model | Leave a boss, level, change your build, summon help, or return with new knowledge. Shadow of the Erdtree adds Scadutree Fragments and a harder region. | Timer, random equipment, three-player scaling, and expedition failure; no difficulty settings. | Systemic difficulty from survival, skills, social consequences, and resource management rather than pattern exams like Malenia. | More concentrated skill checks; Khazan and Sekiro rank above Elden Ring on several editorial ladders. |
| Role-playing | Your identity is expressed through stats, weapons, spells, Ashes of War, and appearance; world reactions are limited. | Preset Nightfarers, relics, and run-based progression rather than a blank-slate character. | Reputation, dialogue, clothing, competence, and choices shape how the world treats you. | Usually focused on combat identity rather than social identity. |
| Best for | Solo or optional co-op dark-fantasy discovery and build experimentation. | Friends who already know Elden Ring and enjoy repeatable, high-pressure runs. | Players who want to inhabit a medieval society and make consequential role-playing choices. | Players who bounced off Elden Ring’s deliberate recovery times and want fights first. |
Is Elden Ring still worth playing in 2026?
Yes, if you want the broadest combination of open-world discovery, build freedom, and boss variety. Nothing in the 2025–2026 group combines a seamless mythic landscape, optional mini-dungeons, enormous weapon and spell coverage, mounted traversal, stealth, summons, and the ability to walk away from a fight on the same scale.
The current complete Switch 2 product is ELDEN RING Tarnished Edition, released on 28 August 2026. It includes the base game, the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion, additional armor, and Torrent appearance customization. On PlayStation 4/5, Xbox One/Series, and PC, the base game and expansion remain available through the appropriate bundle or separate purchase; the extra cosmetic content was sold on other platforms as the paid Tarnished Pack. Check the listing carefully because a base-game box does not automatically include the expansion.

It received a Switch 2 edition in 2026, and the European official page lists version 1.17.2, dated 20 October 2026. The core experience is therefore not frozen in its launch state, although platform performance and feature support still vary.
Its continued importance is reflected in reach as well as design. Bandai Namco’s 2026 Tarnished Edition product page says “over 28 million copies sold worldwide.” Wikipedia’s sales summary reports 30 million by April 2025, while an earlier period report cited 13.4 million by the end of March 2022. Those figures are not interchangeable: the publisher’s live marketing page and secondary reporting use different dates and counting points. The same secondary compilation lists more than 300 Game of the Year awards and describes the critical reception as universal acclaim on Metacritic, with OpenCritic recommending it to 98% of critics.
How does Elden Ring’s combat compare with newer action RPGs?
Elden Ring trades the fastest possible combos for the largest combat sandbox. Stamina, attack commitment, dodge timing, guard, parry, weapon reach, poise, elemental damage, Ashes of War, spells, stealth, Spirit Ashes, and optional co-op all interact. You can create a heavy greatsword character, a dexterity build with status effects, a sorcerer, a faith hybrid, or almost any combination supported by your attributes and equipment.
Bandai Namco describes the central lesson as learning to read enemy intentions, because “a well-timed dodge or parry could be the difference between life and death.” Death drops your runes at the place where you fell; dying again before retrieving them removes that pile. Sites of Grace restore you, allow leveling and fast travel, and let you adjust memorized spells. Rebirth Monuments enable Spirit Ashes in suitable encounters. You can attack directly, use ranged weapons or magic, approach in stealth for critical hits, block and counter, or summon allies.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThis breadth creates deliberate friction. Many attacks have long recoveries, heavy weapons consume stamina, and a missed swing can leave you exposed. The design is not “bad combat”; it prioritizes weapon and boss variety over constant combo density. GameRant’s 2026 comparison describes Elden Ring as having unmatched variety while newer games pursue more fluid, relentless exchanges.
What Nightreign changes
Nightreign retains Elden Ring-derived dodges, attacks, and boss logic but accelerates the surrounding structure. It has eight Nightfarers, each with a passive ability, an active skill, and an ultimate. Any Nightfarer can use any weapon, and the reviewed build removed bow ammunition and equipment-weight restrictions, making experimentation quicker. Relics earned after runs support longer-term customization.

The trade is loss of leisurely preparation. A standard expedition uses three players, gives the team two in-game days to explore Limveld, and ends with a Nightlord on the third night. The Night’s Tide shrinking circle drains health outside the safe area. Dying during the day can cost a level, and a complete team wipe at night ends the expedition. You cannot spend an evening practicing one fog-wall boss in a stable world state because enemy and loot locations can change between runs.
Why Khazan, Nioh 3, Sekiro, and Wukong feel faster
- The First Berserker: Khazan focuses on three weapon families—greatsword, spear, and dual sword-and-axe—and constant offense, parry, block, and deflect decisions. Switchblade Gaming’s 2026 editorial scores give it 9/10 for difficulty and 9/10 for combat; GameRant calls its offense-to-defense transitions unusually intense and fluid.
- Nioh 3 combines Samurai and Ninja styles, on-the-fly weapon switching, dense skill trees, and Diablo-like gear. GameRant’s February 2026 comparison calls it more relentless and fluid than Elden Ring while still crediting Elden Ring with the larger weapon and boss variety.
- Sekiro is the sharpest contrast. You use one primary katana, deflection is the central language, and over-leveling cannot substitute for learning posture pressure. How Difficult Is It reports a 9.18/10 player mean, and Switchblade’s editorial ladder rates it 10/10 for difficulty and combat.
- Black Myth: Wukong uses staff stances, transformations, spells, and dodge-centric defense. GameRant describes it as faster and more spectacular; Switchblade rates its overall difficulty 6/10 because the overworld is relatively forgiving even though bosses can spike from Chapter 2 onward.
- Wuchang: Fallen Feathers rewards perfect dodges and attack chains through Skyborn Might. Switchblade rates its combat 8/10 and difficulty 6/10, while noting criticism that Chapter 2 can over-tune enemy speed.
Which game has better exploration: Elden Ring, Nightreign, or Kingdom Come Deliverance 2?
Elden Ring has the strongest sense of unstructured discovery; Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 has the most reactive society; Nightreign turns exploration into a timed tactical resource.
Bandai Namco presents the Lands Between as connected plains, swamps, mountains, castles, and complex dungeons that can be crossed on foot or horseback. Sites of Grace suggest a direction without forcing it. Torrent lets you bypass hazards and field bosses, and many encounters have no fog wall, so running away is a legitimate decision. Margit, the Fell Omen, is the classic example: if the first major wall is too hard, ride elsewhere, find upgrade materials, learn another weapon, and return.
Nintendo Life describes the overworld as a “see something on the horizon” experience. Small caves and catacombs often take around 30 minutes, while Legacy Dungeons return to the layered shortcuts and ambushes associated with earlier Souls games. The story is intentionally fractured, and the order of major regions is flexible. Fextralife’s 2026 explanation notes that the game avoids a map covered in quest icons and instead asks you to read roads, ruins, towers, enemy placement, and unusual silhouettes.
Nightreign reverses that philosophy. Limveld is designed for route planning under a shrinking circle, limited days, random equipment, and a scheduled Nightlord battle. You explore to become strong enough before the timer forces a confrontation. It can produce exciting improvisation, but it cannot deliver the quiet discovery of riding toward an underground entrance simply because you noticed a shape in the distance.
Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 is a different kind of open world. Bohemia is built around reputation, merchants, guards, clothing, wounds, dialogue, and whether your character has the skills and social standing to solve a problem. Gfinity’s comparison summarizes the distinction as Elden Ring letting you express yourself through combat while KCD2 lets you express yourself through the world. GameRant similarly frames Elden Ring as an action game with RPG scaffolding and KCD2 as a role-playing game where choices, reputation, and competence matter. It cannot match Elden Ring’s dragons, star-filled underground caverns, or mythic boss arenas, but it is not trying to.
Is Elden Ring Nightreign harder than Elden Ring?
Solo Nightreign is generally harder; a coordinated three-player team is roughly Elden Ring-hard, but the comparison is not direct. Nightreign has no difficulty settings, combines a timer with random loot, and expects players to understand Elden Ring’s combat vocabulary before entering its hardest encounters.
ScreenRant’s launch-week analysis says solo play is harder because one player must perform the work normally divided among three Nightfarers. In a full team, revives, role abilities, shared target pressure, and broader coverage offset the extra scaling. The result is less a conventional difficulty level than a pressure system: the team must route through Limveld, collect useful weapons, maintain levels, and reach a Nightlord before the circle and clock remove options.
TechRadar reviewer Echo Apsey completed the Nightlords in about 30 hours and advised familiarity with both the base game and Shadow of the Erdtree. The review calls Darkdrift Knight (Fulghor) its hardest fight. TechRadar also notes that the design is aimed at veterans; newcomers are disadvantaged because enemy patterns, status effects, and weapon behavior are assumed knowledge.

Nightreign’s accessibility options are narrower than some modern action games. The review identifies limited camera and aim-speed controls, no highlighted subtitle or HUD customization, and incomplete console button remapping. Those limitations matter if your difficulty concern is input comfort rather than boss mastery.
How hard is Elden Ring compared to Sekiro / Khazan / Wuchang?
There is no universal scale, but available player and editorial ratings place Elden Ring below Sekiro and Khazan while above Wuchang and Wukong on average. The reason is not simply enemy damage: Elden Ring gives you more ways to change the problem.
| Game | Published difficulty figure | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Elden Ring | 7.22/10 from 67 player ratings on How Difficult Is It (2026); 8/10 in Switchblade’s editorial list. | Hard fights, but an open world, summons, build changes, stealth, and over-leveling provide escape valves. |
| Sekiro | 9.18/10 player mean; 10/10 editorial difficulty. | Deflection and posture skill are central, with little ability to bypass a major exam through build variety. |
| The First Berserker: Khazan | 9/10 editorial difficulty. | Fast, aggressive encounters demand frequent parries, blocks, and weapon decisions. |
| Wuchang: Fallen Feathers | 6/10 editorial difficulty. | Generally more approachable, though certain chapters and speed-tuned enemies can spike. |
| Black Myth: Wukong | 6/10 editorial difficulty. | Exploration is relatively forgiving; selected bosses are much more demanding. |
| Dragon’s Dogma II | 6.55/10 player mean on How Difficult Is It. | A useful “games like Elden Ring but easier” comparison, but its party and vocation systems make difficulty feel different. |
| Skyrim | 3.10/10 player mean on How Difficult Is It. | Much less focused on repeated action-game execution and more forgiving in ordinary exploration. |
Shadow of the Erdtree is a separate challenge band. Nintendo Life describes the Realm of Shadow as more vertical, with difficulty ratcheted up another notch. Scadutree Fragments and Revered Spirit Ashes provide region-specific progression, but the expansion still expects a developed character and stronger execution. Do not use the base-game difficulty alone to predict the DLC.
Elden Ring’s approachability is therefore not the same as easiness. Nintendo Life reviewer Mitch Vogel called it “certainly the most approachable Soulslike game” while saying that “the word ‘easiest’ feels wrong to use.” The open world is the mitigation tool: you almost always have somewhere else to go.
Elden Ring vs Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 which is the better open-world RPG?
Choose Elden Ring for combat expression, fantastical scale, and discovery; choose Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 for role-playing consequences and a believable medieval society. Neither wins every category.
| If your priority is… | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Memorable bosses and build experimentation | Elden Ring | Weapon types, spells, Ashes of War, summons, and boss encounters create far more combat permutations. |
| Dialogue, reputation, and social consequence | Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 | Clothing, reputation, wounds, competence, and NPC memory are core systems rather than decoration. |
| Freedom to leave a difficult encounter | Elden Ring | You can ride away, explore another region, level, respec, summon, or change tactics. |
| Historical immersion | Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 | Its grounded Bohemian setting is built as a society to inhabit rather than a mythic playground. |
| Fast, repeatable combat mastery | Elden Ring | Its combat is more expressive and boss-focused, although Khazan or Sekiro are faster still. |
| Quest-led roaming | Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 | Its authored objectives and social systems provide more explicit role-playing direction. |
GameRant cites an OpenCritic Top Critic Average of 89/100 and a 95% Critics Recommendation rate for KCD2. Those scores describe reception, not a laboratory comparison with Elden Ring. Gfinity’s summary is the more useful buying test: Elden Ring lets you express yourself through combat, while KCD2 lets you express yourself through the world.
What are games like Elden Ring but easier?
If you want the sense of adventure without Elden Ring’s repeated boss walls, start with Dragon’s Dogma II, then consider Black Myth: Wukong, Wuchang: Fallen Feathers, or a less execution-focused open-world RPG such as Skyrim. “Easier” can mean lower enemy pressure, more party support, more forgiving progression, or simply more opportunities to avoid a fight.
- Dragon’s Dogma II: its pawn party and vocation system distribute danger across several characters. Its 6.55/10 player mean on How Difficult Is It sits below Elden Ring’s 7.22/10, but combat and exploration remain more volatile than in a conventional easy mode.
- Black Myth: Wukong: it is more linear and boss-focused, with transformations and spells that can change a difficult phase. The editorial difficulty score is 6/10, although specific bosses remain demanding.
- Wuchang: Fallen Feathers: its 6/10 editorial score and perfect-dodge progression make it a gentler entry point for players who still want a soulslike structure. Chapter-specific speed spikes prevent it from being uniformly easy.
- Skyrim: its 3.10/10 player mean reflects a far more forgiving action model, extensive difficulty options, and broad freedom to build power. It offers fantasy exploration, not Elden Ring-style boss exams.
- Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2: it can be punishing when your character lacks skills, food, equipment, or social standing, but that difficulty is systemic rather than based on memorizing an elaborate attack sequence.
Within Elden Ring itself, the easiest route is not a hidden setting. Use Spirit Ashes, optional co-op, ranged damage, status effects, shields, over-leveling, and the open world’s ability to postpone a fight. The game’s flexibility is the intended accessibility feature.
Which soulslikes have more fluid combat than Elden Ring?
For the most fluid combat, choose Sekiro or Khazan; choose Nioh 3 for stance and gear complexity; choose Wukong for spectacle and mobility; choose Wuchang for dodge-and-chain pressure. They are not strictly better because their focus is narrower.

Sekiro has the cleanest high-speed feedback loop. One katana, posture damage, deflections, and precise counterattacks make every exchange legible. Its limitation is also its identity: there is no Elden Ring-style catalog of weapon classes, spell schools, summons, or build archetypes to change the rules.
Khazan is built around aggression and immediate transitions between offense and defense. Its three weapons have distinct rhythms, and parry, block, and deflect decisions arrive more frequently than in Elden Ring. If your complaint is that Elden Ring attacks feel slow to recover, Khazan is the most direct alternative.
Nioh 3 adds Samurai and Ninja styles, live weapon switching, deep skill trees, and loot-driven optimization. It can feel denser and more technical than Elden Ring, but the large gear system creates its own complexity and repetition.
Black Myth: Wukong uses staff stances, transformations, spells, and evasive movement to create cinematic fights. It has less of Elden Ring’s world-scale route planning and fewer ways to make a boss irrelevant through exploration, but it delivers faster spectacle.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Wuchang: Fallen Feathers sits between these approaches. Perfect dodges feed Skyborn Might and encourage sustained attack chains. Its combat score is high on editorial lists, while its overall difficulty remains below Elden Ring’s; balance spikes vary by chapter.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How does exploration change the difficulty in Elden Ring?
Exploration is Elden Ring’s built-in difficulty valve. The game does not merely give you a large map to fill; it gives you alternative answers to a problem.
- Read the direction, not the obligation. Sites of Grace can point toward a major objective, but their guidance is not a quest lock. A glowing path is a suggestion.
- Use the horizon as a shopping list. A tower, ruin, cave mouth, tree, bridge, or unusual rock formation often contains a route, upgrade material, map fragment, or optional boss.
- Return to a wall with a different resource profile. Levels, weapon upgrades, talismans, flask improvements, Spirit Ashes, and a changed affinity can matter more than repeating the same attempt.
- Switch the combat question. A shield counter, jump attack, stealth opening, status effect, spell, bow, mounted attack, or summon can expose a weakness that a straight duel hides.
- Accept that some content is optional. You do not need to defeat every field boss or clear every cave to advance. Optionality prevents one difficult encounter from becoming a permanent roadblock.
This is why Fextralife says Elden Ring encourages players to read the landscape itself rather than follow highlighted objectives and dense icon maps. The uncertainty is part of the reward: a side path can produce a weapon, a shortcut, or an entire underground region that changes your build.

Those are published requirements, not a guarantee of a particular frame rate. Launch-era PC stutter has been documented in secondary coverage, and patches have addressed much of it; current performance depends on drivers, hardware, resolution, and the patch installed. Do not assume a 2022 minimum specification predicts 2026 performance on every system.
Which game should you choose?
- Choose Elden Ring or Tarnished Edition if you want a vast dark-fantasy map, the broadest build selection, memorable bosses, mounted travel, and the freedom to leave a fight.
- Choose Nightreign if you have two teammates, already understand Elden Ring’s combat, and enjoy 45-minute runs, route optimization, random loot, and repeatable Nightlord hunts. It is a poor first FromSoftware game for most newcomers.
- Choose Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 if “role-playing” means reputation, dialogue, social consequences, clothing, wounds, and a world that notices your behavior.
- Choose Khazan, Nioh 3, Sekiro, or Wukong if Elden Ring’s swing recovery feels too slow and you want more immediate combat pressure than open-world wandering.
- Choose Baldur’s Gate 3 if party composition, branching choices, and systemic problem-solving matter more than real-time action.
- Choose The Witcher 3 if authored quests, companions, and a guided narrative journey matter more than a largely unmarked discovery loop.
The simplest decision rule is: Elden Ring for fight plus explore, KCD2 for inhabit and role-play, Nightreign for co-op runs, and faster soulslikes for combat-first mastery.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to play Elden Ring before Nightreign?
You can technically start Nightreign without finishing the original, but its design assumes familiarity with Elden Ring’s enemies, statuses, weapons, and bosses. TechRadar’s review specifically recommends knowing the base game and Shadow of the Erdtree because later Nightlords are tuned for veterans.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Does Nightreign have a normal single-player campaign?
No. It is structured around expeditions in Limveld, with a shrinking safe area, changing loot and routes, and a Nightlord encounter at the end of a run. Solo play exists, but the game is designed around the work and abilities of three Nightfarers.
How long does Elden Ring take compared with Nightreign?
Nintendo Life places the Elden Ring base game at roughly 60 to well over 100 hours, with Shadow of the Erdtree taking about 20 to 50 hours depending on route and completion. Nightreign is built from short runs; reviewer Echo Apsey reported about 30 hours to complete the Nightlords, with replay value coming from repeated expeditions rather than one long map.
Is Elden Ring harder than Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2?
They are difficult in different ways. Elden Ring tests timing, positioning, build preparation, and pattern recognition; KCD2 can punish poor skills, equipment, survival planning, and social decisions. A numerical soulslike ladder should not be used to rank KCD2 fairly.
Which Elden Ring version includes the expansion?
On Switch 2, the 2026 Tarnished Edition includes the base game and Shadow of the Erdtree. On PlayStation, Xbox, and PC, read the product name carefully and select a bundle or edition that explicitly lists the expansion; a standard base-game copy may not include it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I play Elden Ring Tarnished Edition offline on Switch 2?
The core campaign is designed as a single-player experience and can be played offline, while online co-op and invasion features require the platform’s online service. Check Nintendo’s regional requirements for account and subscription details before buying.
Does Elden Ring Nightreign share progression with Elden Ring?
Nightreign is a standalone product with its own Nightfarers, relics, and expedition progression. Your original Elden Ring character, weapons, map discoveries, and story progress do not carry over as a shared campaign save.
What is the least punishing way to start Elden Ring?
Explore Limgrave and the surrounding regions before forcing the first major castle boss, upgrade a weapon, collect flask improvements, and use Spirit Ashes or optional co-op. A shield, ranged option, or status-focused backup weapon can also reduce the need to win every exchange perfectly.
Is the Switch 2 version of Elden Ring 60 fps?
Nintendo Life reported approximately 30 fps in docked and handheld modes, around 1080p or close to it, with occasional delayed drops in demanding scenes. It should not be purchased on the assumption that it provides a locked 60-fps presentation.
