Yes, you can use a VPN with eero, but eero itself is not currently a network-wide VPN router. eero supports VPN passthrough: devices running a VPN app can send encrypted traffic through the mesh, and an upstream router running a VPN client can encrypt traffic for the entire eero network. If you want every device covered, the dependable design is modem or gateway → VPN-capable router → eero. The other practical choices are installing VPN apps on individual devices or using eero Plus Guardian VPN on up to five supported devices. The five options below are therefore choices for using VPN protection alongside eero, not five VPN clients that run natively inside an eero unit.

Provider support, router firmware, protocol support, hardware availability and pricing change. Treat the named services as configuration candidates, then verify the exact router model and current documentation before buying.

Does eero support a network-wide VPN?

No. eero’s current support guidance describes VPN passthrough, not a VPN client built into the eero router. Passthrough lets encrypted traffic created elsewhere cross the eero network; it does not make every device on the network use a VPN automatically.

There are three workable arrangements:

  • Upstream VPN router: a separate router runs the provider’s OpenVPN or WireGuard client, then feeds the eero system. Devices connected to eero inherit that router’s VPN route, including many devices that cannot install an app.
  • Device apps: a computer, phone or tablet runs its own VPN application. eero passes the encrypted connection, but devices without an app remain outside the VPN.
  • Guardian VPN: eero Plus includes a VPN that can be installed on up to five supported devices. This is a device-level service, not a VPN client operating inside the eero gateway.

If a VPN subscription is the only thing you add to an existing eero network, you do not get whole-home coverage. Whole-network routing requires a second router with a compatible VPN-client feature.

Which five VPN options can you use with eero in 2026?

The table compares five practical choices without claiming an eero-specific performance ranking. The first four are services documented for use with compatible third-party routers; Guardian is eero’s device-level option.

Option How it works with eero Router requirement Best fit Important limitation
NordVPN Run its client on a separate router before eero, or use apps on individual devices. Compatible third-party firmware or another supported router; the documented manual path uses an OpenVPN client. Readers willing to configure a supported upstream router. Its support guidance says eero cannot run the service through native eero firmware.
ExpressVPN Use a supported router with the provider’s firmware or manual configuration, then connect eero behind it. Exact model and firmware must appear on the current supported list or meet the manual-configuration requirements. Households that want a documented router setup. The provider says its Aircove router is no longer available for purchase, so it is not a current hardware recommendation.
IPVanish Use the service on a compatible VPN-client router or on supported devices. OpenVPN or WireGuard capability depends on the router firmware and the provider’s current configuration files. Users comparing several providers for an existing configurable router. The available comparison evidence is based on a non-eero test router, not an eero installation.
Proton VPN Route eero traffic through a compatible upstream VPN router, or install apps per device. Router must support the protocol and configuration method offered for your account and model. Readers who already own open-firmware hardware and want another provider candidate. No controlled eero-plus-router performance result is established.
eero Plus Guardian VPN Install the Guardian VPN application on supported phones, tablets or computers. No second router; eero Plus subscription and supported devices are required. Protecting up to five selected devices with minimal network changes. It does not cover every eero client, including devices that cannot run the application.

NordVPN: usable through another router, not eero firmware

NordVPN’s router guidance specifically lists eero among routers that cannot run the service with native firmware. Its documented alternatives are compatible third-party firmware or a different supported router, with an OpenVPN client used in the manual setup path described by the provider.

For an eero household, place that compatible router between the modem or upstream gateway and the eero main unit. Confirm that the exact hardware revision supports the firmware, that the firmware can operate as a VPN client rather than only a server, and that the configuration files match the protocol you intend to use.

ExpressVPN: check the supported-router list before purchase

ExpressVPN documents selected router models and manual configuration routes. Compatibility is model- and firmware-specific, so a generic claim that a router is “VPN-ready” is not enough. Verify that the router can initiate the provider’s client connection and that eero can sit downstream in the proposed topology.

ExpressVPN’s documentation also states that Aircove is no longer available for purchase. Do not plan a new setup around that product; select currently available hardware whose exact model is documented for the required client protocol.

IPVanish and Proton VPN: candidates for a configurable upstream router

IPVanish and Proton VPN appear in industry router comparisons as services considered for use with third-party router firmware. In practice, your result depends on the router’s CPU, firmware, protocol implementation, configuration file and internet connection. A provider appearing in a router guide does not establish that it performs the same way behind every eero model.

For either service, obtain the current router instructions from the provider, check whether OpenVPN, WireGuard or both are supported for your account, and confirm whether the firmware accepts the supplied certificates, keys and endpoint settings. If the provider supports only a protocol your router lacks, choose different hardware or use device apps instead.

Guardian VPN: the simplest route for a small set of devices

eero Plus subscribers can install Guardian VPN on up to five supported devices. This avoids changing your network topology and is useful when the goal is to protect laptops and phones rather than televisions, cameras, consoles or smart-home devices.

Because Guardian runs on the devices, it does not turn the eero gateway into a network-wide VPN. A sixth device, an unsupported operating system or an appliance without an app will not be covered by that arrangement.

Which setup is right for your household?

Choose based on coverage first, then on how much router administration you are willing to do.

Your priority Recommended path Why What remains unprotected
Every eero-connected device, including devices without apps Compatible upstream VPN router The router establishes one tunnel for downstream clients. Devices deliberately excluded by router rules, plus anything connected outside that router.
Only a few personal devices Provider apps on each device No new router and usually the easiest per-device controls. Devices without an installed, active app.
Up to five supported devices with minimal changes Guardian VPN through eero Plus Uses device applications and avoids a second gateway. Other eero clients and unsupported devices.
Different VPN policies for different devices Apps, or an advanced router with policy routing Per-device apps can be switched independently; policy routing requires capable firmware. Any client not included in the chosen rules or app coverage.

Remember that “network-wide” means traffic from clients behind the VPN router follows the tunnel by default. It does not automatically cover a guest network, a cellular connection, a neighbor’s access point or a device that has manually bypassed the router.

What hardware and software do you need for whole-network coverage?

You need more than a subscription. The upstream router must be able to initiate a VPN connection and forward ordinary LAN traffic to eero.

Router requirements

  • VPN-client mode: the router must connect to a provider’s server. VPN-server-only support is insufficient.
  • Protocol support: use OpenVPN or WireGuard only when both the provider and the router firmware support the same protocol.
  • Firmware compatibility: stock firmware, manufacturer firmware and third-party firmware expose different client features. Check the exact model and hardware revision.
  • Routing and DNS controls: look for a kill switch, DNS handling and options to prevent traffic from escaping if the tunnel drops.
  • Capacity: encryption consumes router resources. A model that can route your broadband speed without a VPN may deliver less throughput when encryption is enabled.

Physical layout

Connect the modem or upstream gateway to the VPN router’s WAN port. Connect one of that router’s LAN ports to the eero gateway’s internet port, then keep the remaining eero nodes connected according to the normal eero mesh design. This makes the VPN router the upstream default gateway for eero.

If the modem is also a router, you may create double NAT. Double NAT is not automatically fatal, but it can complicate inbound connections, gaming, port forwarding and device discovery. When possible, use bridge or passthrough mode on the modem/router, or follow the hardware manufacturer’s documented double-NAT arrangement.

How do you configure an upstream VPN router for eero?

Menu names differ by router and firmware, but the sequence is consistent. Save your existing settings before changing the gateway.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Verify compatibility. Record the router’s exact model and hardware revision. Confirm that its firmware supports a VPN client and the provider’s required protocol.
  2. Install or update firmware. Use the manufacturer’s supported release or the third-party firmware specified by the provider. Download firmware only from the relevant vendor’s official support channel.
  3. Obtain the provider configuration. Collect the server address, protocol, certificates, keys, username and password or token required by the provider. Do not substitute a server configuration for a different protocol.
  4. Open the VPN-client page. In the router administration interface, find the section usually labeled VPN Client, OpenVPN Client or WireGuard. Import the configuration or enter the values manually.
  5. Set fail-closed behavior. Enable the firmware’s kill switch or firewall rule that blocks WAN traffic when the VPN tunnel is down. If the firmware cannot do this, understand that clients may fall back to the ordinary internet connection.
  6. Choose DNS behavior. Use the provider’s DNS settings or another deliberate, encrypted DNS design. Check that the router is not advertising an unintended upstream DNS server to eero clients.
  7. Connect the eero gateway. Run an Ethernet cable from the VPN router’s LAN port to the eero gateway’s WAN/internet port. Restart the upstream router first, then eero, if either device retains stale DHCP information.
  8. Test before adding the whole household. Connect one laptop to eero, confirm that the public IP and apparent location match the VPN endpoint, then disconnect the tunnel and verify that the kill switch prevents ordinary WAN access.
  9. Document recovery settings. Keep a copy of the original firmware, router credentials, provider configuration and a diagram of the cable layout. You may need them if a firmware update resets the client.

Do not assume that a successful tunnel on the router proves every eero client is using it. Test a wired client, a wireless client and at least one device that uses IPv6 if your network enables IPv6. A protocol or DNS leak can affect only some clients.

How do you protect individual devices instead?

Device apps are simpler when you do not need whole-home coverage. Install the provider’s current application on each supported device, sign in, choose a server, connect, and enable the app’s automatic-start or kill-switch settings if available.

  1. Update the device operating system and the VPN application.
  2. Sign in using the account credentials or authentication method required by the provider.
  3. Select a nearby endpoint for general browsing, or a location that meets the service you are trying to access.
  4. Enable automatic connection on untrusted Wi-Fi and a kill switch where the operating system supports it.
  5. Confirm the VPN icon or connection status before using sensitive applications.
  6. Repeat the process for every device that needs protection; eero will not enroll other clients automatically.

This approach gives each user independent control and usually preserves more provider-app features than router mode. Its weakness is coverage: smart televisions, game consoles, streaming boxes, printers and many smart-home products may have no compatible app.

What are the main trade-offs of running a VPN before eero?

Speed and latency

Encryption, the distance to the VPN endpoint and the upstream router’s processor can reduce throughput or add latency. The available guidance warns that router use may be slower, but it does not establish a universal speed reduction for a particular eero model or provider. Measure your own connection with the VPN on and off rather than relying on a generic number.

Fewer application features

A router tunnel carries traffic but may not expose every feature found in a provider’s desktop or mobile application. Per-device controls, automatic server selection, split tunneling and specialized modes may be unavailable or harder to reproduce in router firmware.

Centralized failure

One upstream router simplifies coverage but creates a single point of failure. If its tunnel, firmware or power supply fails, every downstream eero client can lose internet access when the kill switch is enabled.

Local-network complications

VPN routing can affect casting, printer discovery, gaming, inbound connections and services that expect local DNS. Test those functions after deployment. If only some devices need the VPN, per-device apps or policy-based routing may be less disruptive.

How can you troubleshoot an eero VPN setup?

Nothing connects after adding the VPN router

  • Check that the cable runs from the VPN router’s LAN port to eero’s WAN/internet port.
  • Confirm that the upstream router received a WAN address and that eero received a private address from it.
  • Reboot in order: modem or gateway, VPN router, then eero.
  • Temporarily disable the kill switch only for diagnosis, then restore it after the tunnel works.

The tunnel connects but clients show the normal public IP

  • Verify that the router is operating as a VPN client, not merely reporting a server process.
  • Check whether the eero gateway is connected to the VPN router’s LAN network.
  • Inspect policy-routing or bypass lists for the affected client.
  • Test IPv4 and IPv6 separately; an IPv6 path can bypass an IPv4-only tunnel.

Some sites or devices fail

  • Try a different provider endpoint if the current address is blocked.
  • Check DNS settings and local-name resolution.
  • Test casting, printers and games with the VPN temporarily disconnected to isolate VPN routing from eero discovery issues.
  • Review MTU settings if pages load partially or connections repeatedly stall.

The VPN is too slow

  • Choose a geographically closer endpoint.
  • Use WireGuard when your provider and firmware support it and your security requirements permit it.
  • Compare wired and wireless tests to separate VPN overhead from Wi-Fi congestion.
  • Check whether the router’s processor is the bottleneck and consider a more capable VPN-client router.

What will the VPN cost, and what should you verify before buying?

The evidence available for this topic does not establish current subscription prices, promotional rates or a universal hardware cost. Budget for two separate items: the VPN service and, for whole-network routing, a compatible VPN-client router. eero Plus is a separate subscription path for Guardian VPN and covers up to five supported devices rather than the entire network.

Before purchase, verify all of the following for your location and date:

  • The provider’s current subscription price, renewal price, refund terms and simultaneous-connection policy.
  • The exact router model, hardware revision and firmware version supported by the provider.
  • Whether OpenVPN, WireGuard or another required protocol is available in client mode.
  • Whether the router can enforce a kill switch and manage DNS and IPv6 safely.
  • Whether the hardware is currently sold by a reputable retailer; do not rely on discontinued products listed in old guides.
  • Whether the arrangement preserves services you use, such as local printing, casting, gaming or inbound access.

A search such as “VPN router with VPN client” can help locate hardware, but the phrase is not a compatibility guarantee. Match the exact model to the provider’s instructions before ordering.

How reliable are “best VPN for eero” rankings?

Be cautious with rankings that imply direct eero testing. One router comparison updated August 12, 2026 reports testing 59 VPN services and shortlists four services on a Linksys WRT3200ACM running DD-WRT and OpenWrt. That is useful evidence about those services and that Linksys configuration, but it is not an eero-specific test and does not prove equal performance through an eero mesh.

No controlled result establishes a universal top-five order for particular eero models plus upstream routers. A defensible choice therefore starts with compatibility and coverage, then uses your own latency, throughput and reliability tests. Availability and provider instructions can change after publication.

What should you check before switching the whole network?

  1. Write down the current modem, router and eero topology.
  2. List every device that must remain reachable locally, including printers, cameras and home-automation hubs.
  3. Decide whether all traffic or only selected clients should use the tunnel.
  4. Confirm protocol, firmware, model and hardware-revision compatibility with the provider.
  5. Plan a maintenance window and keep a non-VPN recovery path available.
  6. Test public IP, DNS, IPv6, local discovery, streaming, gaming and video calls.
  7. Enable automatic updates where safe, but recheck the VPN client after firmware changes.
  8. Review the setup whenever you change provider, router, eero gateway or internet service.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will a VPN protect smart-home devices that cannot install an app?

Yes, if those devices are behind a correctly configured upstream VPN-client router. An app-only arrangement, including a device-level VPN service, cannot cover hardware that has no compatible application.

Can I keep eero as the Wi-Fi mesh while another router runs the VPN?

Yes. Connect the VPN router upstream and place the eero gateway behind it. Check for double NAT and test local discovery, gaming and port-forwarding functions after the change.

Does a VPN hide traffic from my internet provider?

A VPN normally encrypts traffic between the VPN client and the provider’s server, so the local provider sees a connection to that server rather than the final destinations. The VPN operator can still observe information available to it under its service design and policies.

What happens when the upstream VPN tunnel drops?

Without a kill switch, clients may automatically use the ordinary internet route. With a properly configured kill switch, they should lose internet access until the tunnel returns, so test that behavior before relying on the setup.
