Dungeons & Dragons: World of Warcraft is a D&D campaign setting and rules expansion for playing in Azeroth, not a tabletop recreation of the MMO’s combat loop. It adapts all 13 World of Warcraft classes into D&D foundations, adds nine new or revised subclasses, and supports more than 40 specializations through subclass features, feats, spells, maneuvers and equipment. The result lets you build recognizable characters such as a Death Knight Paladin or Shaman Barbarian while also allowing combinations the video game does not, subject to the Dungeon Master’s approval.
The expansion is scheduled for November 17, 2026, with Master Tier early access beginning November 3, 2026. Wizards of the Coast and D&D Beyond describe a package that also includes new species, spells, magic items, professions, dungeons, factions and monsters for an Azeroth campaign.
What is Dungeons & Dragons: World of Warcraft?
This official tabletop adaptation uses the Player’s Handbook as its mechanical base and supplies Azeroth-specific options around it. Alessio Palumbo of Wccftech described the concept as “D&D set in Azeroth, not World of Warcraft played with dice.” That distinction matters: the book translates class fantasies and specializations into flexible D&D characters instead of attempting to reproduce an MMO-style rotation, respawn loop or raid interface.
The official product description lists all 13 World of Warcraft classes, nine new or revised subclasses and more than 40 specializations. It also advertises 16 playable species, more than 60 spells, more than 25 magic items, over 10 professions, seven dungeons, more than 50 monsters and 30 dungeon-boss stat blocks.

How do World of Warcraft classes map to D&D?
Most classes use an existing D&D class as their chassis. A specialization can be represented by a recommended subclass plus feats, spells and other choices, or by a new subclass with specialization options built into it.

What are the nine new or reimagined subclasses?
Six subclasses are new: Oath of the Ebon Blade and Oath of the Holy for Paladins, Demon Hunter for Rangers, Discipline Domain and Shadow Domain for Clerics, and Path of the Elements for Barbarians. Three existing concepts are updated: Rogue’s Swashbuckler, Barbarian’s Path of the Spiritual Guardian and Monk’s Warrior of Mystic Brews.
Why is the Death Knight a Paladin?
Oath of the Ebon Blade alters the normal Paladin package to deliver an undead, rune-powered identity. Death Coil replaces Lay on Hands with a dice pool that can damage enemies or restore Hit Points to undead allies. Runic Smite replaces the usual Divine Smite spell with necrotic Rune Strike, shifting the class from holy burst damage toward Death Knight themes.

The Barbarian chassis supplies a durable, rage-fueled base while the Totems feature supplies the Shaman’s battlefield control. A Shaman can plant a totem as a Bonus Action to grant nearby allies temporary immunity to selected conditions or reduce enemies’ Speed.

Elemental Shamans use Raging Elements to cycle ice, lava and lightning effects. Spiritual Guardian Shamans summon protectors and shield allies, while Restoration Shamans follow the Path of the World Tree. The mapping is therefore about preserving the class’s role and visual language, not matching the MMO’s original class label.
How do the other new subclasses change play?
- Oath of the Holy: gives Paladins a dedicated Holy specialization path.
- Demon Hunter: adds Ranger features for Soul fragments, Blindsight and Devourer, Havoc and Vengeance spell support.
- Discipline Domain: provides the Priest specialization’s damage-and-restoration identity through a Cleric domain.
- Shadow Domain: adds Shadowform and other tools for a shadow-focused Cleric.
- Path of the Elements: gives Barbarians elemental effects associated with an Elemental Shaman.
- Updated Swashbuckler: supports the Outlaw Rogue concept.
- Path of the Spiritual Guardian: supports Enhancement Shaman abilities on the Barbarian chassis.
- Warrior of Mystic Brews: updates the Monk option used for Brewmaster.
Can I make a non-elf Demon Hunter or a non-Dracthyr Evoker?
Yes, if the Dungeon Master approves. The adaptation explicitly supports combinations that World of Warcraft normally restricts, including a dwarf Bard, a non-elf Demon Hunter and a non-Dracthyr Evoker. Multiclassing is also available; for example, a character could begin as a Rogue and later take Paladin levels.
Death Knight, Demon Hunter and Evoker are called hero classes because they represent experienced characters. They normally start at level 3 or higher, although a Dungeon Master may allow level 1. Their subclass choice is fixed at character creation, so players should settle the intended specialization before play begins.
Which species can player characters choose?
There are 16 playable species in total: 11 new species and five existing species with rules that map them to Azeroth. The new species are Dracthyr, Draenei, Earthen, Forsaken, Haranir, Mechagnome, Pandaren, Tauren, Troll, Vulpera and Worgen. The five existing species are Dwarf, Elf, Goblin, Human and Orc.

This list is separate from class restrictions. A species can be paired with a class or specialization even when that pairing would not exist in the MMO, subject to the campaign’s character-creation rules.
What campaign content comes with the expansion?
Beyond character options, the setting is designed to support a full campaign in Azeroth.

Is the Icecrown Citadel map pack useful for a campaign?
It is most useful for a group that expects to run high-level content and wants physical battle maps, tokens and a ready-made five-chapter adventure. The level 16–20 range and 10 boss encounters make it a poor substitute for a complete low-level campaign, but a strong add-on for a table already planning an Icecrown-focused finale.
Groups that mainly want the class-building rules can start with the core expansion and add the map pack only when their campaign reaches that tier. Groups that also need quick-reference material for a Dungeon Master may value the Ultimate Bundle’s screen, while the Collector’s Edition is primarily a presentation upgrade.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do hero classes have to start above level 1?
Their normal starting point is level 3 or higher because they represent experienced characters. The Dungeon Master can permit a level-1 start, but the hero-class subclass is still selected when the character is created.
Can I multiclass a World of Warcraft character in this adaptation?
Yes. The rules retain D&D multiclassing, so a character can combine class foundations, such as taking Paladin levels after beginning as a Rogue. The Dungeon Master decides whether a combination fits the campaign.
Are the 16 species all newly written for this book?
No. The total includes 11 new species and five existing D&D species—Dwarf, Elf, Goblin, Human and Orc—with rules that map them to Azeroth.
