As of October 30, 2026, the choice is between a game you can play now and one you can only wishlist: Dragon Ball: Sparking! ZERO is available, while Dragon Ball Xenoverse 3 is announced for late 2027. Choose Sparking! ZERO for battles with established Dragon Ball characters, story scenarios, and fights with friends. Wait for Xenoverse 3 if creating and developing your own hero in a new story is the main attraction—and you are willing to wait for its announced release window.
At a glance
| Name | Best for | Key distinction | Platforms and availability | Checked |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dragon Ball: Sparking! ZERO | Playing as established characters in arena battles now | Eight-perspective story content, online fights, tournaments, and shareable custom battles | PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, Nintendo Switch, and Switch 2; available | Oct 2026 |
| Dragon Ball Xenoverse 3 | Creating a hero for an original story and squad missions | Created protagonist, six announced avatar races, and a new West City setting | PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam; announced for late 2027 | Oct 2026 |
These are not two released games competing on equal terms. One is a buy-now fighting game with an established cast; the other is an announced role-playing-flavored adventure whose systems and launch package can still change. That distinction should shape every comparison below.
Should you buy Sparking! ZERO now or wait for Xenoverse 3?
Buy Sparking! ZERO if you want a released Dragon Ball game centered on its established cast. Wait for Xenoverse 3 if a custom protagonist and an original story matter more than playing soon. They emphasize different player fantasies, so the better choice depends less on which title sounds like a direct sequel and more on whether you want to inhabit a familiar fighter or make a new hero.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsBandai Namco’s official Xenoverse 3 page gives a late-2027 window and presents the game for wishlisting. It is not currently playable, and the publisher has not announced an exact launch day or final price. Earlier 2026 announcements used the broader “2027” window; the current official page is more specific, but it still does not establish a date.

If both concepts appeal, buying Sparking! ZERO now and returning to Xenoverse 3 closer to release is a reasonable option, not a promise that the games share progression or will have identical platforms. The unreleased game’s descriptions and guides explain announced plans, not how its finished systems will feel. Treat a wishlist as a way to monitor news, not as evidence that a physical copy, launch edition, or preorder price exists.
What “wait” really means
Waiting is sensible when the custom-hero premise is non-negotiable, but it carries normal pre-release uncertainty. The late-2027 window could be refined, and Bandai Namco has not yet published final editions, a price, a precise launch date, or a complete list of launch modes. If you need a game for a holiday, tournament, or local multiplayer session this year, Xenoverse 3 cannot fill that role.
Do you want to create a fighter or play as Dragon Ball’s cast?
The clearest difference is who you control. Xenoverse 3 is built around a player-created protagonist; Sparking! ZERO focuses on playing as established Dragon Ball characters.
Xenoverse 3: make a protagonist
Bandai Namco describes an original story in Age 1000, set in West City, where the created hero meets original characters and joins the Great Saiya Squad. The announced character creator includes six races: Earthling, Saiyan, Namekian, Frieza Race, Majin, and the newly introduced Android. Players can also select fighting styles and customize abilities.
This setup is a better fit if character creation and developing a hero through a new story are central to what you want from a Dragon Ball game. You are not simply selecting Goku or Vegeta from a menu; the published premise puts your avatar at the center of a new situation. That can appeal to players who enjoy choosing a race, shaping a moveset, and seeing an original character occupy the Dragon Ball world.
The publisher has described tools and systems for that premise, but those details remain subject to change before release. The six-race list is an announced plan, not a guarantee that every race will have identical abilities, outfits, or progression paths at launch.
Sparking! ZERO: choose from established fighters
Sparking! ZERO puts familiar fighters at the center. Bandai Namco describes fast 3D battles with transformations, beam clashes, and reactive, destructible environments. Its story content retells battles from eight character perspectives, while custom battles let players create and share their own matchups and scenarios.
This is the stronger fit if the fun is re-creating moments from the anime, testing a favorite character’s transformations, or making an impossible matchup without first leveling an avatar. You can jump directly into a known fighter’s identity and toolkit rather than building a character before reaching the battles you want.
The publisher’s 2025 roster overview documented 182 characters at that time. That is a dated figure, not a confirmed count for the current roster after subsequent DLC. It is also a different kind of appeal from Xenoverse 3’s announced fighting-style count: a style reference is not another selectable roster character.
How do the story and battle modes differ?
Xenoverse 3 is presented as an original hero-led story with squad missions; Sparking! ZERO offers character-perspective story battles, arena fights, tournaments, and player-created scenarios. Neither description supports a verdict that one game’s combat is objectively better, and the unreleased Xenoverse 3 cannot be judged as a finished experience yet.

What Xenoverse 3 has announced
The publisher’s pre-release battle guide describes missions with squads of up to four, customizable abilities, Ki management, Ki Break, Soul Assist, and Soul Switch. Soul Assist supports the created hero, while Soul Switch lets the player temporarily channel an established hero. The idea is that your avatar remains the foundation of the build while a known Dragon Ball character can become part of the action for a period of time.

A September 2026 announcement likewise discusses styles based on 130 heroes; neither figure means the game has 130 selectable roster fighters. These numbers describe references for styles or heroes informing those styles, not a confirmed playable-character total. That distinction matters when comparing them with a roster figure for Sparking! ZERO.
There is a build choice to understand: Bandai Namco’s September 11, 2026 guide says, “When customizing your character, you can choose either to Soul Switch or to Awaken, but not both.” In other words, the announced build uses one of those options, not both together. Players deciding between a temporary established-hero channel and an Awoken Skill should expect a meaningful choice rather than stacking every option on one character.
The same guide covers Ki management and Ki Break, suggesting that resource timing and defensive openings are part of the planned combat vocabulary. It also warns that the pre-release interface and features may change, so treat these details as the current plan rather than a final specification.
What Sparking! ZERO offers now
Sparking! ZERO combines arena battles with story content and modes for creating or sharing battles. The eight-perspective story approach gives players multiple established-character viewpoints, while custom battles are for constructing matchups outside the standard story. The publisher also lists tournament modes and online fights.

Its quick 3D format is built around movement, transformations, beam clashes, and environments that react to attacks. If your priority is a self-contained battle rather than an avatar progression loop, those features are available without waiting for a new campaign. Custom battles also give the game a community-facing side: the attraction is not only replaying the official story but seeing what scenarios other players create.
Its newer content roadmap includes future Tower of Power and Team-up content, as well as additional fighters. Those are roadmap plans, not a guarantee that every listed feature is already available on every platform. If a particular mode or fighter is the reason you are buying, check the current platform listing and the publisher’s latest platform-specific notice.
Which game can you play on your platform?
Sparking! ZERO is available on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, Nintendo Switch, and Switch 2. Xenoverse 3 is officially announced for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam, with late 2027 as its current release window.
The official Xenoverse 3 announcement does not list a Switch version. That means a Switch version is unconfirmed—not that the publisher has ruled one out forever. If you are choosing based on Nintendo hardware, Sparking! ZERO is the confirmed playable option today; do not buy or wishlist Xenoverse 3 on the assumption that it will launch there.

Platform ownership also matters for future content. The base game being available on a system does not mean every expansion arrives there at the same time. Nintendo players should pay particular attention to the announced 2027 timing for Super Limit-Breaking NEO, described below.
How can you play with friends?
Sparking! ZERO has online fights, but local and cross-platform details need care. Bandai Namco’s general product page describes offline friend fights as exclusive to the Hyperbolic Time Chamber. Nintendo’s Switch 2 listing gives separate local-player configurations for that version, so do not assume the general product-page description applies identically to every platform.
In practical terms, check the listing for the exact console your group owns before promising a couch session. “Available on Switch” and “supports the same local setup as the PS5 listing” are different claims. The platform-specific product page is the safer authority for player counts and local arrangements.
Current cross-play should not be treated as available based on the publisher’s roadmap. Bandai Namco’s October 9, 2026 roadmap plans a limited cross-play beta among PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam after summer 2027. The publisher cautions: “Please note that the Cross Play beta will be tested in a limited capacity.” That is a planned test, not a confirmation of cross-play availability today or a promise that it will cover all platforms.
For Xenoverse 3, the reviewed official announcements do not confirm launch cross-play or specify competitive PvP. A squad system describes how missions may be structured; it does not automatically establish ranked matches, a co-op campaign, or a particular online service. If either feature is essential to your purchase, wait for a concrete announcement rather than assuming that an announced squad system implies a particular online mode.
What do the games cost, and what does DLC include?
Sparking! ZERO is the one with purchase options and paid DLC available now, but edition contents vary. Xenoverse 3 has no confirmed final price, edition lineup, or exact release date on its reviewed official page. Compare the actual platform storefront listing before buying rather than assuming a bundle includes every expansion.
Sparking! ZERO editions and expansion
Bandai Namco’s product page offers physical and digital edition selection, and different editions bundle different content. Base-game ownership and DLC-inclusive bundles are not interchangeable: check the edition’s included-content list for your platform and whether the add-on you want is part of that purchase. A deluxe or collector package should not be presumed to contain future content unless its listing says so.
The publisher’s July 30, 2026 notice says Super Limit-Breaking NEO is available for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, with Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 scheduled for 2027. The expansion adds a Limit Breaker Journey progression mode, new fighters, and stages. Bandai Namco Entertainment Europe lists 33 characters and four stages for the DLC; these are expansion figures, not the base game’s roster or stage counts. Do not assume the expansion is already live on Nintendo hardware.
The Limit Breaker Journey is an expansion progression mode, not evidence that Sparking! ZERO has adopted Xenoverse 3’s created-avatar premise. One game can add progression to its established-character battles without becoming an avatar RPG. Likewise, future Tower of Power, Team-up material, and additional fighters on the roadmap should be evaluated as planned additions until the relevant platform notice confirms release.
Xenoverse 3 pricing is not established
The official page’s late-2027 window and wishlist status do not establish the game’s price, editions, or launch-day DLC plan. There is not enough confirmed information to compare its eventual cost with a particular Sparking! ZERO bundle. Recheck the official page and the relevant store listing when the release is closer.

Can Xenoverse 2 players bring anything into Xenoverse 3?
Bandai Namco’s October 25, 2026 instructions describe a Link Data process for qualifying Xenoverse 2 players to receive specified Xenoverse 3 rewards. It requires a free Bandai Namco ID, and the publisher says the two games do not need to be on the same platform: “It’s also not necessary to match your platform between your copy of XENOVERSE 2 and XENOVERSE 3.”
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
This is a reward eligibility process, not a promise to transfer an entire avatar, save file, DLC library, or all progression. Specific rewards require eligibility and full versions; the publisher says requirements may change and that redemption details will follow nearer launch. Returning players should wait for those details before making a platform or purchase decision around a particular reward.
Do not interpret “Link Data” as a cross-save system. The published instructions describe qualifying rewards tied to an account and eligible copies, while leaving the exact redemption process for closer to launch. Keep your Xenoverse 2 account information available if you want to participate, but do not buy a second copy on another platform solely to chase an unannounced transfer feature.
Which one makes sense for different kinds of players?
Use the decision points below to match the game to the experience you want, rather than treating the sequel number or release timing as a quality verdict.
- Choose Sparking! ZERO now if you want to play a released game, control established fighters, revisit story battles, build custom matchups, or fight online.
- Wait for Xenoverse 3 if a created protagonist, a new story setting, customizable fighting styles, and squad missions are the deciding features—and late 2027 works for you.
- Choose by confirmed platform if you play on Switch or Switch 2: Sparking! ZERO is listed for both; a Xenoverse 3 version has not been confirmed.
- Choose by character fantasy if you want to step into Goku, Vegeta, Piccolo, or another established fighter immediately; choose the announced avatar system if you want your own race, style, and story role.
- Wait for more detail if your decision depends on Xenoverse 3’s price, launch cross-play, specified competitive PvP, final edition contents, or exact release day. Those details are not established by the reviewed announcements.
- Check DLC carefully if buying Sparking! ZERO: confirm whether the chosen edition includes the specific add-on you want and whether it is available on your platform.
A practical two-game plan
If you enjoy both fantasies and have room in your budget, there is no need to force a single winner. Play Sparking! ZERO for established-character battles and custom scenarios now, then reassess Xenoverse 3 when its date, price, editions, and final feature list are published. That approach avoids treating an announced feature as a guaranteed launch experience while still letting you enjoy the available game.
How should you treat the announced Xenoverse 3 features?
Use the official descriptions to decide whether the premise interests you, but keep pre-release promises separate from confirmed details about a finished game. The six announced avatar races, the West City setting, Great Saiya Squad, Soul Switch, Soul Assist, and style customization describe what Bandai Namco has shown; the company’s guide says the interface and features may change before release.
The “over 130” Fighting Styles figure deserves the same caution. It can help you understand the intended breadth of customization, but it should not be converted into a 130-character roster claim or used to promise a particular hero’s availability. The announced Soul Switch-or-Awaken choice is also a current design description, not a guarantee that the final interface will be unchanged.
Likewise, the platform list and late-2027 window reflect the official page as of October 30, 2026. They are the best basis for a current wishlist decision, not evidence of a final date, complete launch feature list, or platform availability beyond those named. For Sparking! ZERO, platform availability and DLC timing can differ, so its current base-game availability does not mean every expansion is out on every system.
What do the sales and roster numbers tell you?
Bandai Namco reported more than 3 million Sparking! ZERO units sold worldwide within 24 hours of launch and more than 5 million worldwide as of December 31, 2024, in a February 4, 2025 release. Those are historical milestones, not a current sales total, and they do not predict how you will respond to the combat or online population on your platform.

The same caution applies to roster comparisons. The documented 182-character overview came from 2025, before later downloadable content. The 33 characters and four stages attached to Super Limit-Breaking NEO describe that expansion, not the base game. Xenoverse 3’s 130-style references describe fighting-style inspiration, not a confirmed number of selectable fighters. Keep each figure tied to its date and category.

How we arrived at the recommendation
The recommendation follows the verified differences that matter to a buyer: release status, announced platforms, the custom-hero versus established-cast premise, modes described by the publisher, friend-play and cross-play qualifications, and what is known about DLC and editions. It does not rank combat quality or claim to judge Xenoverse 3 hands-on; that game is still unreleased. Historical roster and sales figures are not treated as current totals, and announced plans are identified as plans rather than available features.
Before purchasing, verify the storefront for your exact console, the edition’s included content, and the latest platform-specific DLC notice. Before waiting, verify whether the late-2027 window, price, platforms, and online features have changed. Those simple checks prevent the most likely mistakes: buying a code instead of a full game, assuming a Switch release that has not been announced, or treating a roadmap item as playable today.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I transfer my Xenoverse 2 character to Xenoverse 3?

No such roster count has been announced in the cited materials. The publisher’s figures refer to more than 130 Fighting Styles and styles based on 130 heroes, not 130 confirmed selectable roster fighters.
How many copies of Sparking! ZERO has sold?
Bandai Namco reported more than 3 million worldwide within 24 hours of launch and more than 5 million worldwide as of December 31, 2024, in a February 2025 release. Those are historical milestones, not a current sales total.
Is Xenoverse 3 available to play now?
No. Its official page presents it for wishlisting with a late-2027 window. There is no announced exact launch day, final price, or playable release at this time.
Is Sparking! ZERO cross-play?
Do not assume current cross-play. Bandai Namco’s October 2026 roadmap plans a limited PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam beta after summer 2027, and says the test will have limited capacity.

Is Super Limit-Breaking NEO included with every Sparking! ZERO edition?
No inclusion should be assumed. Edition contents differ, and the expansion is available on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC while its Switch and Switch 2 release is scheduled for 2027. Check the exact listing.
Which game is better for creating a custom character?
Xenoverse 3 is the announced choice for a created protagonist, six avatar races, customizable abilities, and a new story. Sparking! ZERO instead centers on established fighters and custom battle scenarios.

Bottom line: Buy Dragon Ball: Sparking! ZERO now for established-character arena battles, story perspectives, custom fights, and currently available online play. Wishlist and wait for Dragon Ball Xenoverse 3 if building your own hero and exploring its announced original story matters more than playing before late 2027.
