Start with Dragon Age: Origins if you want the full story in release order; start with Inquisition if you will play only one older game before The Veilguard; and start with The Veilguard if you want a current-generation action RPG and are happy to miss some history. There is no single required entry point: each mainline game introduces a new protagonist, and BioWare designed The Veilguard to be understandable on its own. But earlier games add context and emotional weight—especially for the story around Solas.

Which Dragon Age game should you play first?

Choose based on what you want from the series, not on a rule that you must complete every game before starting. For the best sense of how Thedas, its conflicts, and its recurring characters develop, play the four mainline games in release order. If you mainly want to understand the setup for The Veilguard, focus on Inquisition and its Trespasser expansion. If you simply want a modern RPG, going straight to The Veilguard is a reasonable choice.

Choose Origins for the full Dragon Age experience

Origins is the strongest starting point for a lore-first player. It introduces the Blight, the Grey Wardens, and the mage–Templar tensions, while letting you shape a Warden whose background changes how the world responds. That foundation makes the later games’ references and returning characters more meaningful. ScreenRant’s series-order guide recommends beginning at the start, and IGN’s advice is that the full “Dragon Age experience” includes Origins at some point.

Choose Inquisition for the shortest meaningful lead-in to Veilguard

If you plan to play just one earlier game, choose Inquisition, then play Trespasser. Solas is a companion in Inquisition, and the expansion’s reveal and ending establish the conflict that The Veilguard continues. Kotaku describes Inquisition as the bare minimum for that lead-in; IGN calls Trespasser especially important to the next game’s setup.

Choose Veilguard if you want a current-generation RPG

The Veilguard is a valid first game, not a test you must pass after finishing the older ones. BioWare Creative Director John Epler told Game Informer, in an interview quoted by Pocket-lint, that the game was made to refer to earlier entries without requiring them for comprehension. Post-launch coverage from TheGamer likewise concluded that newcomers lose nostalgia and compassion for some returning characters, rather than the ability to follow the plot.

What is the correct Dragon Age story order?

For the four mainline games, story order and release order are the same: Origins, Dragon Age II, Inquisition, then The Veilguard. The central cast changes each time, but events, world states, and some characters carry across the series.

  1. Dragon Age: Origins — released 3 November 2009 in North America for Windows, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3. You play a Grey Warden during Ferelden’s Fifth Blight.
  2. Dragon Age II — released 8 March 2011 in North America. Hawke’s rise from refugee to Champion of Kirkwall unfolds over roughly a decade.
  3. Dragon Age: Inquisition — released 18 November 2014 in North America. The Inquisitor seeks to close a tear in the Veil called the Breach and build an organization able to confront the wider crisis.
  4. Dragon Age: The Veilguard — released 31 October 2024 for Windows, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Rook and a new team confront Solas’s ritual and the threat it unleashes.

Novels and comics add background but are optional; they do not replace any of those four games. Mobile and browser spin-offs—including Heroes of Dragon Age, Dragon Age Legends, and Dragon Age Journeys—are also outside the mainline play order.

What does each game feel like to play?

The series changes its combat and level design substantially between entries. A player who loves the tactical pause of the first game may find the latest one much more action-oriented; someone who dislikes sprawling maps may prefer The Veilguard’s more curated areas.

Game Combat Structure Protagonist
Origins Real-time combat with pause; queue abilities and switch party members Dark-fantasy campaign with distinct origin stories and connected regions A customizable Grey Warden
Dragon Age II Faster and more action-oriented than Origins, while retaining pause Mostly one city, Kirkwall, across a decade Hawke, a Fereldan refugee
Inquisition Action combat with an optional tactical camera Large semi-open regions, a war table, and a home base The Inquisitor
The Veilguard Real-time action, with a pause-to-command wheel; companions cannot be directly controlled Curated hubs and missions rather than Inquisition-style open regions Rook

How does combat change across the series?

Origins gives you the most direct control over party tactics: pause during a fight, issue orders, and switch to another party member. Dragon Age II speeds up the action but still allows pausing. Inquisition combines more immediate combat with a tactical camera, so it offers a middle ground.

The Veilguard is the biggest departure for players attached to the older tactical style. You control Rook, select companion abilities through a command wheel, and cannot take over a companion directly. IGN’s review noted that the game retains pause-and-play commands but makes combat much more action-focused; Rook’s defeat ends the fight.

How different are the worlds and pacing?

Origins is built around the Blight and the Warden’s effort to unite allies. Dragon Age II narrows the focus to Kirkwall, with the frame story told by Varric to Cassandra. Its concentrated setting supports a character-driven story, though reused maps and the feeling of returning to the same spaces are lasting criticisms. The game was developed on a short 14–16-month schedule, according to the historical account in its series coverage.

Inquisition spreads its story across expansive regions, with companions, advisors, mounts, and a war table. That scale also means optional tasks can distract from the main plot. For a more focused run, prioritize the main story and companion quests at the home base rather than trying to clear every activity in every region.

The Veilguard uses more curated hubs and a new group of seven companions. It is less like roaming a large open region and more like moving between authored locations and missions. The lead changes in each game—Warden, Hawke, Inquisitor, then Rook—which is one reason newcomers can enter at different points.

How much does each game matter before Veilguard?

The earlier games add context, but The Veilguard does not require a complete replay history. The most important distinction is between following its plot and feeling the history behind its characters: prior knowledge is not necessary for the first, but it strengthens the second.

What you gain from Origins and Dragon Age II

Origins gives the series its foundational ideas: the Blight, Grey Wardens, and the political and religious conflicts that shape Thedas. Your choices also establish a world state that can be carried into later games. Dragon Age II follows Hawke and Varric, both of whom return in later entries, and its mage–Templar conflict provides a bridge into Inquisition. Its Legacy expansion is the extra story content most often singled out as part of a critical series path.

Why Inquisition and Trespasser are the best Veilguard preparation

Inquisition is the direct prequel in the most useful sense: it introduces Solas as a companion, while its post-credits reveal and Trespasser connect him to the next game’s central events. The Veilguard begins with Rook and Harding trying to stop Solas’s ritual; the interruption frees Elgar’nan and Ghilan’nain. Knowing Solas before that story gives his role more emotional significance.

The expansion The Descent is worthwhile if dwarven history and Titan lore interest you. Inverse estimates it at three to four hours and notes that its lore is relevant to ideas developed in The Veilguard. It is an optional deepening of the world, not a substitute for Trespasser as the key narrative lead-in.

What Veilguard carries over—and what it does not

Older games supported substantial world-state continuity: choices could pass through save imports or Dragon Age Keep into Inquisition. The Veilguard handles this differently. Its character creator lets players recreate an Inquisitor and choose three decisions from Inquisition; it does not use Keep in the same way as the earlier continuity system.

That limited carryover means there is little reason to replay every older entry solely to preserve a personalized canon. IGN’s review described previous decisions as mattering less than they had in earlier games. The benefit of playing Inquisition is chiefly knowing Solas and the people around him, not unlocking a substantially different version of the new game.

Which editions should you buy?

For the older games, look for the complete or bundled edition rather than buying the base game and trying to assemble its expansions separately. Storefront availability can change by region and platform; the editions below are the ones identified in the cited store and storefront listings as of October 2026.

Game Edition to look for What it includes Platforms listed
Origins Ultimate Edition Base game, Awakening, and nine content packs Steam, EA app, Xbox
Dragon Age II Ultimate Edition Base game and bundled additional content Steam, Xbox
Inquisition Game of the Year Edition Base game and post-launch content PC, Xbox, PlayStation
The Veilguard Standard game No story expansion is available Steam, EA app, PS5, Xbox Series X|S

Origins Ultimate Edition includes Awakening and nine packs: The Stone Prisoner, Warden’s Keep, Return to Ostagar, Feastday Gifts, The Darkspawn Chronicles, Feastday Pranks, Leliana’s Song, The Golems of Amgarrak, and Witch Hunt. EA’s classic-games DLC help page is also identified as a route to download Origins and Dragon Age II DLC for people who already own the relevant base game; check the current account and platform requirements before relying on that option.

Inquisition’s Game of the Year edition, released 6 October 2015, bundles the base game and post-launch content. The Veilguard has no story expansion: IGN reported in November 2024 that BioWare had no plans for DLC and had shifted attention to the next Mass Effect.

Where can you play the games in 2026?

Your hardware can settle the decision. The storefront roundup from Radio Times lists Origins and Dragon Age II as digital Xbox and PC choices, rather than PS5 games. Inquisition is the older entry listed for PlayStation, Xbox, and PC; its PS4 version is playable on PS5. The Veilguard is the only mainline game released natively for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S as well as PC.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • PS5 only: choose Inquisition if you want Solas’s introduction, or The Veilguard if you want the newer game. Do not plan on buying native PS5 versions of Origins or Dragon Age II.
  • Xbox or PC: the storefronts cited list all four mainline games across the relevant digital platforms. The editions are not all equivalent: check the platform-specific listing before buying a bundle.
  • Older PlayStation hardware: Origins and Inquisition have PlayStation releases, but the cited roundup does not list Dragon Age II as a PS5 title. Confirm compatibility and current digital availability for your exact console and region.

The Veilguard was added to Xbox Game Pass in August 2025, according to its published game listing. Subscription catalogs change, so check the live catalog before treating access as included. The available information does not establish current EA Play or Game Pass catalog membership for Origins, Dragon Age II, or Inquisition.

How long does it take to get through the important games?

The time commitment depends less on the number of games than on how much optional content you choose to do. The most useful published estimate for a focused Inquisition lead-in is about 30–40 hours; a completionist route can take substantially longer.

  • Inquisition critical path: Kotaku estimates about 30–40 hours for the main story plus companion routes at the home base, while skipping open-world bloat.
  • The Descent: Inverse estimates three to four hours.
  • The Veilguard: IGN cited HowLongToBeat’s estimate of upwards of 88 hours for a main-story run that also does side quests. IGN’s review puts a near-100-percent playthrough at about 100 hours.

Those numbers describe different scopes, not a direct comparison of like-for-like campaigns. The available estimates do not establish comparable HowLongToBeat main-story totals for Origins, Dragon Age II, and Inquisition. A useful practical takeaway is that the full-series route is a major commitment, while the Inquisition critical path is a defined way to prepare for The Veilguard without clearing every optional map activity.

Is Origins still worth starting with?

Yes, if you value foundational lore, consequential role-playing choices, and tactical party combat more than modern presentation. It is also the most dated game in the sequence, so a newcomer should go in expecting older graphics and systems rather than a modern action RPG.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You choose one of six backgrounds—Dalish Elf, Dwarf Commoner, City Elf, Mage, Human Noble, or Dwarf Noble—and begin as a custom Grey Warden during the Fifth Blight in Ferelden. Those origins shape the opening and affect how characters treat you. The combat lets you pause, queue abilities, and change party control, which offers more tactical management than The Veilguard.

The bundled expansion Awakening is a full follow-up adventure set about six months later; it is commonly estimated at around 20 hours. Witch Hunt is the Origins add-on most directly flagged for later-story relevance. Kotaku’s compact series path includes both, while other packs are optional if the aim is the main narrative rather than completion.

There is a practical PC caveat: IGN has warned that the PC version can run poorly without settings adjustments or mods. That is a source-reported compatibility warning, not a claim that every computer has the same problem. Players who encounter instability should check current community or official support guidance for their storefront and system before changing files; an unmodified first playthrough is also a reasonable way to avoid introducing mod-related issues.

What should a beginner skip?

Skip content according to your goal rather than treating every release as mandatory. A player pursuing the full franchise story should keep the four mainline entries in order; a player seeking only the Veilguard setup can narrow the route considerably.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Do not clear every Inquisition activity just to reach the ending. Kotaku’s shorter route focuses on the main story and companion content at the home base, not every optional task in the large regions.
  • Do not mistake every Origins content pack for essential plot. Prioritize Awakening and Witch Hunt if you want the significant follow-up material.
  • Do not buy old-game DLC twice without checking ownership. EA’s classic-games help page is identified as an option for downloading DLC when the base game is already owned.
  • Do not expect a full history import into Veilguard. The game offers three selected Inquisition choices, not the older Keep-style continuity system.
  • Do not start with a tie-in book instead of a game. Novels and comics are supplementary, not prerequisites for the mainline plot.

Is Dragon Age finished?

As of October 2026, the cited franchise account describes The Veilguard as the fourth and final mainline Dragon Age game, and reports that BioWare shut down in 2026. That makes this a closed-series choice for a beginner rather than preparation for a confirmed fifth mainline entry. It does not change the practical play order or make the earlier games unavailable by definition; check current storefront listings for your platform and region.

For most players, the decision is straightforward: buy Origins Ultimate Edition for the full saga, Inquisition Game of the Year Edition plus Trespasser for the best single-game lead-in, or The Veilguard for a current-generation jump-in. The middle route gives up some history, but it avoids turning an enjoyable new RPG into a 100-plus-hour prerequisite.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to read the Dragon Age books before playing?

No. Tie-in novels and comics provide optional background around the games, but they are not required to understand the four-game mainline story. If you want extra lore after choosing a game, the World of Thedas volumes collect setting material rather than serving as a play-order prerequisite.

Are the Dragon Age mobile games part of the main story?

No. Games such as Heroes of Dragon Age, Dragon Age Legends, and Dragon Age Journeys are spin-offs, not entries needed to follow the mainline sequence.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is there a Dragon Age remaster I should buy instead?

The cited official-source coverage does not identify a Dragon Age: Origins Legendary Edition or a Dragon Age II remaster. Look for the named Ultimate or Game of the Year editions rather than assuming a newer remaster exists.
