Dr.Parted Live – bootable Linux distribution is a Debian-testing live rescue system that runs from USB without depending on the installed operating system. The latest release visible in the project’s SourceForge directory is Dr.Parted-Live26.07-amd64.iso, dated July 1, 2026, and it combines GParted with imaging, recovery, diagnostics, wiping, and administration tools.

That broad toolset makes Dr.Parted Live useful when a computer will not boot, a system partition must be resized offline, or a technician needs one environment for storage maintenance. Dr.Parted Live is not simply GParted on a USB: GParted is one of its main applications, while the distribution also includes backup, cloning, data-recovery, hardware-diagnostic, networking, and file-management utilities.

Key takeaways

  • Dr.Parted Live is a bootable GNU/Linux distribution based on Debian testing, with an Openbox desktop and PCManFM file manager.
  • The latest release visible in the supplied SourceForge download directory is Dr.Parted-Live26.07-amd64.iso, published July 1, 2026, at approximately 929 MB for amd64/x86-64 PCs.
  • Dr.Parted Live includes GParted, Partclone, Clonezilla, Partimage, FSArchiver, ddrescue, TestDisk, PhotoRec, SMART/NVMe tools, and destructive wiping utilities.
  • The ISO should be checksum-verified and written to a USB drive in raw disk-image mode rather than copied as an ordinary file.
  • Dr.Parted Live is a strong general-purpose technician rescue environment, but GParted Live is a better fit for narrowly focused partition editing and Clonezilla is a better fit for dedicated imaging.
  • Partition changes, cloning, recovery, and wiping can permanently destroy data, so identifying the source and destination disks is more important than choosing a graphical or command-line tool.

What is Dr.Parted Live – bootable Linux distribution?

Dr.Parted Live is a live Linux operating system distributed as a bootable ISO. A user writes the ISO to removable media, boots a computer from that media, and runs the environment without normally installing it on the computer’s internal disk. The project describes the distribution as a live, installer-free system focused on disk partitioning, backup, restoration, cloning, diagnostics, recovery, and system administration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The distribution is based on Debian testing rather than Debian stable. The Debian-testing base can provide newer software and hardware support, but readers who require a conservative, long-term-stable rescue image should treat that choice as a trade-off rather than assume that Dr.Parted Live behaves like a Debian stable release. The project’s description and purpose are documented on the Dr.Parted Live SourceForge project page.

Dr.Parted Live uses the lightweight Openbox window manager and PCManFM file manager. The desktop is intended to expose practical rescue tools, terminals, file browsers, and utilities rather than provide the polished applications or long-term configuration expected from a normal desktop Linux installation.

What is the current Dr.Parted Live release?

The latest version visible in the supplied project results is Dr.Parted-Live26.07-amd64.iso, published July 1, 2026. What tools does Dr.Parted Live include?

Dr.Parted Live is best understood by matching its applications to jobs. The distribution’s published application lists are available in the release download listing; the presence of an application does not guarantee that every filesystem, controller, encryption layer, or damaged disk will be handled successfully.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Partitioning and disk administration

GParted provides the main graphical partition-editing workflow. It can create, delete, resize, move, copy, and inspect partitions when the relevant filesystems and storage layers are supported. Dr.Parted Live also includes command-line disk and filesystem utilities, while Apart GTK provides a graphical front end to Partclone for partition backup and restoration.

A live environment is useful for partition changes because the installed operating system is not actively using the system partition. That does not make a partition operation risk-free. A backup should exist before resizing, moving, or changing a partition table, and mounted partitions generally need to be unmounted before modification.

Backup, cloning, and restoration

The published tool list includes Apart GTK, Partclone, Clonezilla, Partimage, FSArchiver, ddrescue, Safecopy, Grsync, and Rclone. Together, these cover filesystem-aware partition backups, whole-disk or partition cloning, file-oriented archive workflows, copying, and recovery-oriented imaging. The project describes support for bare-metal partition backup and recovery, external drives, and network shares.

Tool inclusion is not a recovery guarantee. A clone can fail because the destination is too small, the source is failing, the wrong block-device level was selected, or encryption and RAID layers were not handled correctly. A failing source drive should normally be imaged with a read-minimizing recovery workflow such as ddrescue before ordinary repair or partition editing is attempted.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

File and partition recovery

TestDisk can be useful for partition-table and filesystem-structure recovery. PhotoRec and Scalpel perform file-carving-style recovery, while ext4magic targets particular ext4 recovery scenarios. GSmartControl and HD Sentinel are listed for drive-health inspection and diagnostics.

Deleted-file recovery depends on what happened after deletion. Continued writing, SSD TRIM, encryption, filesystem behavior, and physical disk damage can make recovery incomplete or impossible. Stop using the affected drive and recover to a different destination whenever the data matters.

Secure erasure and destructive maintenance

The release list includes nwipe, shred, Eraser, hdparm, and cryptsetup. These tools cover different operations and should not be treated as interchangeable. Deleting a partition does not securely erase its old contents. Erasing free space is not the same as erasing an entire device. Software overwriting is also not universally reliable on SSDs, NVMe drives, copy-on-write filesystems, snapshots, or storage using a flash-translation layer.

Hardware and system troubleshooting

The current release list includes memtester, nvme-cli, GSmartControl, gnome-firmware, and lxtask. Hard Info and Boot-Repair are listed as optional one-click installations. Boot-Repair may help in some bootloader situations, but the supplied project material does not document its exact workflow or guarantee that it repairs every UEFI, Windows, encryption, or multi-boot configuration.

Desktop, networking, and optional applications

The environment includes Openbox, PCManFM, Xfce Terminal, Mousepad, Netsurf, Catfish, Xarchiver, wget, and curl. The release listing also identifies FileZilla, Firefox, Chromium, and Synaptic as optional installations. These applications can help with file copying, downloading documentation or packages, browsing local files, and accessing network resources, but Dr.Parted Live remains a rescue environment rather than a replacement for a fully configured everyday desktop.

How does Dr.Parted Live compare with GParted Live?

Dr.Parted Live and GParted Live are different distributions. Dr.Parted Live bundles GParted inside a wider technician-oriented rescue desktop, whereas GParted Live is more tightly focused on partition editing. The official GParted Live documentation describes GParted Live as a bootable GNU/Linux distribution for x86 computers and specifically advises backing up before resizing or moving partitions.

Option Best fit Main emphasis Trade-off
Dr.Parted Live One broad rescue toolkit Partitioning, imaging, recovery, diagnostics, wiping, administration Larger and more complex; based on Debian testing
GParted Live Focused partition editing GParted and partition operations Less of an all-purpose recovery desktop
Clonezilla Dedicated imaging and deployment Disk and partition cloning Less convenient as a general desktop troubleshooting environment
SystemRescue Broad Linux system rescue Advanced recovery, filesystems, networking, administration Current release details were not verified in the supplied research
Parted Magic Commercial disk-maintenance environment Polished disk utilities and workflows Current price, license, and feature scope require direct verification
Linux installer live environment Basic rescue with an existing trusted ISO Terminal, file access, and common partition utilities May not include Dr.Parted Live’s recovery-oriented collection

How do you download and verify Dr.Parted Live?

Download the ISO from the project’s SourceForge Download directory, then obtain the checksum information shown with the same release. The researched listing provides MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, and SHA-512 values. SHA-256 is the most practical verification target for most readers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For the 26.07 ISO, the published SHA-256 value is:

05b280def9823e78618ff09c92e7b31ac37ae522165b47b5e180646aa53faed

Verify the downloaded file before writing it to a USB drive:

sha256sum Dr.Parted-Live26.07-amd64.iso

Compare the command’s output character-for-character with the release-page value. A mismatch means the file should not be used until the download is repeated and the cause is understood. The checksum confirms that the file matches the published digest; it does not by itself prove a signed release or establish Secure Boot compatibility.

How do you create a bootable Dr.Parted Live USB?

Use an image-writing utility that supports writing an ISO as a bootable disk image. Select the downloaded ISO, select the correct USB device, choose raw or disk-image writing mode when the utility offers modes, confirm that the USB may be erased, write the image, and safely eject the drive.

Merely dragging the ISO file onto a USB drive usually does not create bootable media. The release includes USBImager inside the live environment, but its presence does not establish that USBImager is the required host-side writing application for every computer. Use a trusted image writer appropriate to the operating system from which the USB is being created.

Writing the image normally erases the selected USB device. Disconnect other removable drives first or identify the target by its capacity and model so that an external backup disk is not accidentally overwritten.

How do you boot the computer from the USB?

Insert the USB, restart the computer, open the firmware’s one-time boot menu, and select the USB device. The key is vendor-specific and may be F12, Esc, F9, F8, or another key documented by the computer or motherboard manufacturer. The supplied Dr.Parted Live pages do not establish one universal key or fixed boot-screen label.

If the USB does not appear, check whether the image was written correctly, try another USB port or drive, verify the ISO checksum again, and inspect the firmware boot order. Secure Boot, UEFI-versus-legacy settings, USB-controller compatibility, and the computer’s architecture can also affect booting. Secure Boot compatibility for the current Dr.Parted Live image was not verified, so do not assume that the image will boot on every modern PC.

After selecting the live boot option presented by the image, wait for the desktop to load and confirm that the intended disk is visible before changing anything. The located image is amd64/x86-64, so an ARM computer, Apple Silicon Mac, or other non-amd64 system requires a separately verified image.

How should you identify the correct disk before using Dr.Parted Live?

Identify a disk by its capacity, model, serial number, connection type, and visible partitions rather than relying only on names such as /dev/sda or /dev/sdb. Linux device names can change when drives are connected in a different order.

These commands provide an initial inventory:

lsblk -o NAME,SIZE,MODEL,SERIAL,TYPE,FSTYPE,MOUNTPOINTS
sudo fdisk -l

For more partition-table detail, use:

sudo parted -l

For a specific device, substitute the confirmed device path:

sudo parted /dev/sdX print

Replace /dev/sdX only after confirming the device identity. Check whether the target is an internal SATA disk, USB drive, NVMe device, RAID volume, encrypted container, LVM physical volume, or another storage layer. Disconnect unnecessary external drives, unmount partitions before modifying them, and confirm the source and destination again immediately before cloning or restoring.

How do you resize or move a partition safely?

Use GParted from the live desktop only after important data has been backed up. GParted’s own live-media guidance recommends creating a whole-disk or partition-image backup before resizing or moving partitions; the warning is especially important when the operation involves a system, boot, EFI, encrypted, or nearly full partition.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Back up important files and, where practical, create a full-disk or partition image.
  2. Boot Dr.Parted Live and select GParted.
  3. Choose the correct disk from GParted’s device selector.
  4. Inspect the partition table, filesystem types, sizes, and mount status.
  5. Unmount any partition that must be modified.
  6. Queue the smallest necessary set of operations and review the pending-operations list.
  7. Check the target disk, expected new size, and remaining free space before applying changes.
  8. Apply the operations without powering off the computer or disconnecting the drive.
  9. Wait for every operation and error message to finish.
  10. Reboot and verify that the operating system, bootloader, and filesystems still work.

GParted may refuse to resize a mounted or dirty filesystem, an unsupported filesystem, a filesystem with insufficient free space, or a block device hidden behind encryption or RAID. I/O errors can also make resizing unsafe. Repeatedly retrying an operation without checking the filesystem and creating a backup increases risk.

How do you image a failing disk with ddrescue?

Use ddrescue when the priority is to make a recoverable copy of a failing source disk while minimizing unnecessary rereads. Dr.Parted Live lists ddrescue among its tools, but the project pages do not provide a complete, release-specific recovery manual, so the following is a command pattern rather than a guaranteed procedure.

sudo ddrescue -f -n /dev/sdX /path/to/recovery.img /path/to/recovery.log

Confirm all three paths before pressing Enter. The source must be the failing disk, the image destination must be a different storage device or suitable mounted destination, and the log file must be preserved so the recovery can be resumed. The destination generally needs to accommodate the source image, and the source disk should be kept unchanged whenever possible.

Do not run a partition editor first on a physically failing drive unless the recovery plan specifically requires it. A failing drive can degrade while being repeatedly scanned, and an incorrect source or destination can destroy the only remaining copy of the data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How can you check drive health?

For a SATA or SAS drive, the release includes tools such as GSmartControl and provides the commonly used smartctl workflow:

sudo smartctl -a /dev/sdX

For NVMe storage, inspect the device and its health log with:

sudo nvme list
sudo nvme smart-log /dev/nvme0

Exact output and device access can vary because of USB bridges, controller pass-through, permissions, firmware, and the version shipped in the image. A healthy-looking SMART report does not prove that every file is readable, and a failing health report should prompt a recovery-first plan rather than more experimentation.

How do you recover files or a lost partition?

Stop writing to the affected disk, attach a separate destination, and determine whether the objective is partition recovery, filesystem recovery, or file carving. TestDisk is oriented toward partition-table and filesystem-structure recovery. PhotoRec and Scalpel can carve files when directory metadata is unavailable, but carved files may lose their original names and directory structure. ext4magic is relevant only to particular ext4 recovery situations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Recovery success depends on whether deleted blocks have been overwritten, whether an SSD has discarded blocks through TRIM, whether encryption keys and metadata remain available, and whether the drive has physical damage. For professional forensic work, Dr.Parted Live does not replace validated forensic tooling, write blockers, evidence handling, or chain-of-custody procedures.

What storage and boot caveats matter?

Situation Why it matters Safer response
Encrypted disk The live environment may see a container rather than the filesystems inside it, and unlocking requires the correct credentials and support. Confirm the encryption technology and unlock path before modifying anything.
RAID or storage-management layer The physical disk layout may not represent the logical volume, and changing a member disk can damage the array. Identify the controller, RAID metadata, and logical-volume layer first.
LVM Partitions may contain physical volumes and logical volumes rather than directly usable filesystems. Inspect the full storage stack before resizing or cloning.
ZFS or btrfs Filesystem features, snapshots, and copy-on-write behavior can make generic tools or wiping assumptions unsafe. Use filesystem-aware procedures and preserve snapshots or metadata when required.
NVMe or SSD Flash translation, TRIM, and controller commands affect recovery and erasure behavior. Use verified NVMe and manufacturer-supported sanitize procedures where appropriate.
Windows hibernation or Fast Startup A Windows volume may be left in an unsafe state for modification when Windows was not fully shut down. Perform a full shutdown and understand the volume state before writing to it.
UEFI boot files Moving or deleting the EFI System Partition can prevent the operating system from starting. Back up boot information and verify firmware mode and boot entries after changes.

The supplied research does not verify persistence behavior, a formal support policy, a signed-release process, or Secure Boot support for the current image. These are documentation and verification gaps, not proof that the features are absent or defective.

What should you do when Dr.Parted Live fails to boot?

  1. Recalculate the ISO’s SHA-256 checksum and compare it with the project’s published value.
  2. Rewrite the USB in raw disk-image mode rather than copying the ISO as a normal file.
  3. Try another USB drive and another USB port.
  4. Use the computer’s one-time boot menu rather than relying only on firmware boot order.
  5. Review Secure Boot and UEFI/legacy settings, without assuming that changing them is risk-free.
  6. Test the USB on another compatible x86-64 computer if one is available.

A computer that cannot see the USB may have a firmware, port, drive, or image-writing problem. A computer that sees the USB but rejects it may have a boot-mode or Secure Boot compatibility issue. The project’s available pages do not promise universal compatibility.

What should you do when a disk or partition is missing?

First determine whether the disk is missing from the firmware, the Linux kernel, or only the graphical application. Run lsblk, fdisk -l, and parted -l, then compare the results with the firmware’s storage screen and GParted’s device list.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check power, SATA or USB cabling, NVMe seating, USB enclosure behavior, and whether a RAID, Intel RST, Storage Spaces, LVM, or encryption layer is hiding the expected volume. A disk absent from firmware or the kernel generally cannot be repaired through a graphical partition tool; hardware diagnosis or a compatible controller may be required.

Why might cloning or restoring fail?

Cloning or restoration can fail when the destination is too small, the source has read errors, the selected partition layout does not match the intended operation, or encryption, RAID, and filesystem metadata are not handled as expected. A common dangerous mistake is selecting a partition when a whole-disk clone was intended, or selecting the destination as the source.

Use logs where the tool supports them, verify the resulting image or clone, and do not reuse the original source disk for experiments when it contains the only copy of important data. A successful command completion is not the same as a verified, bootable, or complete restoration.

What are the advantages and disadvantages?

Advantages Disadvantages and risks
One image combines partitioning, imaging, recovery, diagnostics, wiping, and file management. The large tool collection can overwhelm beginners and increases the chance of choosing the wrong utility.
It offers both graphical applications and command-line utilities. Debian testing is less conservative than Debian stable.
It can operate when the installed operating system will not boot. The located download is amd64-only; another architecture image was not verified.
Openbox may be practical on older or resource-constrained hardware. Documentation appears smaller than the documentation available for better-known rescue projects.
The current listing provides multiple checksums for the ISO. Several included utilities are inherently destructive.
The ISO was available without a listed purchase price in the researched SourceForge listing. The supplied research does not establish signed releases, Secure Boot support, persistence behavior, or a formal support policy.

Is Dr.Parted Live the right rescue distribution for you?

Dr.Parted Live is a good choice when you want one bootable environment containing GParted, imaging tools, recovery utilities, health checks, file-management tools, and a terminal. It is particularly useful for technicians and experienced Linux users who can identify block devices and understand that a GUI does not remove the risk of destructive operations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

GParted Live is a better choice when the job is narrowly limited to partition editing and a smaller, focused image is preferred. Clonezilla is a better choice when dedicated disk or partition imaging is the main task. SystemRescue is worth considering when a mature, broad Linux rescue environment is preferred, although current SystemRescue release details were not verified in the supplied research. Parted Magic is a commercial alternative whose current price, licensing, included tools, and hardware support should be checked directly before purchase.

Dr.Parted Live is a poor fit for guaranteed recovery of a failing, encrypted, RAID-backed, or heavily damaged disk; for professional forensic evidence handling; for ARM or Apple Silicon hardware when only the amd64 ISO is available; or for readers who expect a scheduled consumer backup product with support, snapshots, and cloud integration.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Dr.Parted Live the same as GParted Live?

No. Dr.Parted Live is a broad bootable Linux rescue distribution that includes GParted alongside imaging, recovery, diagnostic, wiping, and administration tools. GParted Live is a more focused live distribution centered on partition editing.

Can Dr.Parted Live recover deleted files?

Dr.Parted Live includes TestDisk, PhotoRec, Scalpel, and ext4magic, which may help with some partition, filesystem, or deleted-file recovery cases. Recovery is not guaranteed and becomes less likely after overwriting, SSD TRIM, encryption, or physical drive damage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does Dr.Parted Live support Secure Boot?

Secure Boot support for the current Dr.Parted Live image was not verified in the supplied project material. Check the current release documentation and target computer before relying on Dr.Parted Live for a Secure Boot system.

Is Dr.Parted Live suitable for SSD secure erasure?

Do not assume that tools such as shred or nwipe are universally reliable for SSD or NVMe erasure. SSDs use flash-translation layers and may support manufacturer-specific secure-erase or sanitize commands, so verify the drive’s supported procedure first.

What architecture does the latest located Dr.Parted Live ISO support?

The latest located ISO, Dr.Parted-Live26.07-amd64.iso, is an amd64/x86-64 image. Compatibility with ARM, Apple Silicon, and other non-amd64 platforms was not verified.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Dr.Parted Live is a capable free-download rescue environment for users who need more than a partition editor. Its combination of GParted, cloning, ddrescue, recovery, diagnostics, and file tools is valuable when an installed system will not boot. Download it from the project’s current SourceForge directory, verify the checksum, and treat every disk-writing, partitioning, recovery, and erasure operation as potentially destructive.
