Tor Browser is free software from the Tor Project. Download it only from the official Tor Project download page, Google Play, or the official F-Droid distribution route. There is no paid “premium” edition of Tor Browser; apps or websites charging for it may be fraudulent.
This guide covers installation on Windows 10 and 11, macOS 10.15 or later, modern Linux systems, and Android 5.0 or later. It also explains download verification, bridges for blocked networks, updates, and the problems most likely to prevent Tor from connecting.
Current Tor Browser version
As of August 9, 2026, the latest stable release listed by the Tor Project is Tor Browser 15.0.19, released July 21, 2026. The development build is Tor Browser 16.0a9, released July 23, 2026.

Download Tor Browser from the official source
- Open the Tor Project download page.
- Find the section for your operating system.
- Choose the normal download button, not an advert or a third-party download mirror.
- Optionally select Signature or Sig to download the matching OpenPGP
.ascsignature file.
The signature file is useful if you want to confirm that the installer or archive was signed by the Tor Browser developers and was not altered after publication.
Install Tor Browser on Windows
Requirements
Tor Browser supports Windows 10 and Windows 11, including both 32-bit and 64-bit editions.
Installation steps
- On the Tor Project download page, select Download for Windows.
- Open the downloaded Windows
.exefile. - Follow the installation wizard.
- Start Tor Browser from the Desktop shortcut or the location selected during installation.
The installer normally places Tor Browser in your Downloads or Desktop folder and creates a Desktop shortcut unless you turn that option off. If you cannot find the program, run the installer again and pay attention to the destination path.
Windows installation problem: the browser will not start
Tor Browser may fail to start if its installation path contains non-ASCII characters. If the folder path includes unusual or non-Latin characters, reinstall it to a location using ordinary Latin characters, such as a folder directly under your user profile or C:Tor Browser.
Install Tor Browser on macOS
Requirements
Current Tor Browser releases support macOS 10.15 and newer. Support for macOS 10.12, 10.13, and 10.14 ended with Tor Browser 14.
Installation steps
- Open the official Tor Project download page.
- Select Download for macOS.
- Open the downloaded
.dmgfile. - Complete the installation process and launch Tor Browser.
If you also downloaded the .asc file, keep it alongside the DMG until you have verified the download.

How the Linux download works
The official Linux desktop download is a compressed .tar.xz archive rather than a distribution-specific package such as a DEB or RPM. The download page provides architecture-specific builds, including x86_64; Tor documentation also describes a 32-bit i686 package.

Tor Browser 15 is planned to be the last major release supporting 32-bit x86 Linux. Tor Browser 16 is expected to drop that support because Firefox no longer broadly supports the platform.
Graphical installation
- Choose Download for Linux on the official download page.
- Extract the downloaded
.tar.xzarchive with your desktop archive manager. - Open the extracted tor-browser directory.
- Launch
start-tor-browser.desktop.
Tor Browser does not require a system-wide package installation. You can keep the extracted folder in your home directory and launch it from there.
Command-line installation
Open a terminal in the directory containing the archive. Replace the filename below with the exact name of your downloaded file:

If you do not know your device architecture, use Google Play or F-Droid. Those options select the appropriate build for you.

Google Play installation
- Open the Tor Project download page.
- Under Get Tor Browser for Android, select Go to Google Play.
- Install Tor Browser for Android from Google Play.
Google Play is generally the simplest Android option because it chooses the correct device build and manages updates.
F-Droid installation
The official F-Droid distribution is provided through the Guardian Project Official App Repository:
- Install the F-Droid app from the official F-Droid website.
- Open F-Droid and tap Settings in the bottom navigation bar.
- Under My Apps, tap Repositories.
- Tap +, add the Guardian Project App Repository, and confirm with Add Repository.
- Return to the F-Droid home screen and tap Search.
- Search for Tor Browser for Android, open the result, and tap Install.
Direct APK installation
The Tor Project download page provides four APK choices: aarch64, arm, x86_64, and x86. Download an APK directly only when you know your device architecture and are certain that you are using the Tor Project website. The matching Sig link provides a signature for verification.

Verify a Tor Browser download
Verification is particularly useful when downloading an installer or archive outside an app store. A valid OpenPGP signature confirms that the file was signed by the Tor Browser developers and has not been modified since signing.
Install GnuPG if it is not already available, then retrieve the Tor Browser developers’ signing key:

Connect when Tor is blocked
On the first launch, Tor Browser normally offers a direct connection. If Tor is blocked on your network or in your country, choose Configure Connection. You can also configure bridges after installation.
Desktop bridge settings
- Open the hamburger menu (≡).
- Select Settings.
- Open Connection in the sidebar.
- In Bridges, choose a built-in bridge or select Enter bridge addresses you already know.
- For a manually supplied bridge, choose Add new bridges.
- Enter one complete bridge address per line.
The settings are saved when you close the tab.
Android bridge settings
- On the Connect to Tor screen, tap Configure connection, or open Settings.
- Scroll to Connection and tap Config Bridge.
- Turn on Use a Bridge.
- Select Provide a Bridge I know.
- Enter or paste the complete bridge address.
A bridge-moji is only a visual identifier. It is not a bridge address and cannot be entered instead of the complete address. Connection Assist and built-in bridges such as Snowflake may also help on blocked networks.
Fix common Tor Browser problems

| Tor will not connect | Correct the computer or phone’s date, time, and time zone. An inaccurate clock is a frequent cause of connection failures. |
| Security software blocks the browser | Antivirus or firewall software can interfere with Tor or produce false warnings. Test carefully, then create an appropriate exception if the security software is confirmed as the cause. |
| “Proxy Server Is Refusing Connection” | Review proxy settings. A configured proxy can produce this error and Tor cannot use a bridge while a proxy is configured. |
| Tor worked before, but fails after moving the folder | Do not move the Tor Browser folder after installation. Reinstall it in the desired directory instead. |
| Several copies are open | Close other Tor Browser instances. Running multiple copies at once can cause errors and unexpected behavior. |
| Android fails after being moved to an SD card | Move the app back to internal storage. |
| Direct connection is blocked | Use Configure Connection, Connection Assist, a built-in bridge, or a manually supplied bridge. |
Using a VPN together with Tor can also create connection problems and privacy complications. The Tor Project does not recommend combining them unless you understand the configuration and its implications.

Desktop
When an update is ready, the hamburger menu displays a green circle with an upward arrow. Select Update available – restart now. Tor Browser downloads and installs the update, then restarts.

For a manual desktop update, close Tor Browser, remove the old Tor Browser folder, download the current release from the official page, and install it again. Do not simply move an existing installation to another folder.
Android
For Google Play:
- Open Google Play Store and tap your profile icon.
- Tap Manage apps and devices, then open the Manage tab.
- Tap Updates available.
- Select Tor Browser for Android and tap Update.
For F-Droid, open Settings, choose Manage installed apps, select Tor Browser, and tap Update. A direct APK normally installs over the existing version; if it does not, you may need to uninstall and reinstall it.
What Tor Browser does not provide
- No official paid edition: Tor Browser is free and open-source.
- No official iPhone or iPad version: The Tor Project points iOS users toward Onion Browser, but Apple’s WebKit requirement means it cannot provide the same privacy protections as Tor Browser.
- No safe shortcut through another browser: Routing Chrome, Firefox, or another browser through Tor can expose identifying information and create deanonymization risks. Use Tor Browser itself.
- No anonymous BitTorrent: The Tor Project explicitly says not to use BitTorrent over Tor.
- No need for extra privacy extensions: Tor Browser already includes privacy and security modifications. Additional add-ons can bypass protections or make your browser more identifiable.
FAQ
Is Tor Browser really free?
Yes. The official Tor Browser is free and open-source. A website or app charging for an official Tor Browser edition should be treated as suspicious.
Is there an official Tor Browser for iPhone or iPad?
No. The Tor Project says it does not provide Tor Browser for iOS. Onion Browser is an alternative, but Apple’s WebKit requirement prevents it from offering the same privacy protections.
Why will Tor Browser not connect?
Check the device’s clock and time zone first. Then check firewall, antivirus, proxy, VPN, and duplicate Tor Browser instances. If Tor is blocked, use Configure Connection, Connection Assist, or a bridge.
Can I use BitTorrent through Tor Browser?
No. The Tor Project explicitly advises against using BitTorrent over Tor. Also avoid routing ordinary browsers through Tor, since they may expose identifying information that Tor Browser is designed to reduce.

If you download a desktop package or APK directly, verify its signature where practical.
