Yes. The YouTube Music app for compatible Garmin smartwatches requires either a YouTube Music Premium subscription or a YouTube Premium subscription. A free, ad-supported YouTube Music account does not meet Garmin’s requirement for the watch integration. The Garmin app also does not stream music directly: you download playlists or podcast episodes to the watch over Wi‑Fi, then listen through paired Bluetooth headphones.
Does YouTube Music on Garmin require Premium?
Garmin’s June 12, 2024 launch announcement states that a “YouTube Music Premium or YouTube Premium subscription is required” for the YouTube Music Connect IQ app. That requirement applies to using the service on a compatible Garmin smartwatch, not merely to downloading the app from Garmin Connect IQ.
You therefore need a paid subscription before the Garmin integration can provide its YouTube Music library. The two qualifying subscription types are YouTube Music Premium and YouTube Premium. The free, ad-supported tier can still be used in supported YouTube Music apps generally, but it does not satisfy the Garmin watch requirement.
Garmin described the integration as offering access to more than 100 million songs, along with personalized playlists and podcasts. The exact catalog and account terms can vary by region, so check the terms shown for your Google account before subscribing.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Which subscription works with a Garmin watch?
Both of Google’s paid options named by Garmin meet the watch app’s subscription requirement. The practical difference is what else the subscription covers outside the Garmin integration.
| Subscription | Works with the Garmin YouTube Music app? | General Google benefits identified for Premium access | What it does not change on Garmin |
|---|---|---|---|
| YouTube Music Premium | Yes | Music downloads, background play for music, ad-free music and audio-only music playback | The watch still downloads content for offline use rather than streaming it directly |
| YouTube Premium | Yes | Includes the YouTube Music Premium access described by Google, subject to the account’s regional terms | The watch still needs Wi‑Fi for downloads and Bluetooth headphones for listening |
| Free, ad-supported YouTube Music | No for the Garmin integration | Can be used without a paid membership in supported YouTube Music experiences | It does not provide the paid entitlement Garmin requires |
Garmin’s statement does not establish one universal price for either subscription. Prices, taxes, billing currencies, trial offers and plan availability can differ by country and can change over time. Use the subscription page presented for your own Google account when comparing the two paid choices.
Can a Garmin watch stream YouTube Music?
No. Google’s Garmin-specific help says streaming is not available with Garmin smartwatches. You must download playlists or podcast episodes to the watch before you leave your phone or Wi‑Fi connection behind.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

The watch connects to secure Wi‑Fi and copies the selected playlists or podcast episodes for offline playback. The phone is used during account setup, but the downloaded files are intended for listening from the watch without a live YouTube Music stream.
What can you do after content is downloaded?
Google says you can browse your library and control playback from the watch. Supported controls include play and pause, volume adjustment, skipping tracks or episodes, shuffle and repeat. You can select the downloaded material from the watch rather than starting a cellular or Wi‑Fi stream.
Do you need a phone while listening?
You need a phone for the initial Garmin Connect pairing and sign-in process, but Google’s instructions describe listening to downloaded content from the watch with Bluetooth headphones. The phone does not replace the watch’s download requirement, and a live stream from the phone is not the mode supported by this integration.

What do you need before setting up YouTube Music on Garmin?
Prepare each requirement before opening the app. Missing one of these items commonly stops the process at installation, sign-in, downloading or playback.
A compatible Garmin smartwatch
Install the app through Garmin Connect IQ and verify that your exact watch model is listed as compatible. Garmin’s announcement does not provide a universal model-by-model list, so do not assume that every Garmin watch with music features supports this Connect IQ app.
A qualifying Google account
Use the YouTube account that actually holds the YouTube Music Premium or YouTube Premium subscription. Signing in with a different Google account can leave the watch unable to verify the paid entitlement, even if another account on the phone has an active subscription.
Garmin Connect pairing
The watch must be paired with a phone through Garmin Connect. Keep notifications enabled during sign-in because Google’s setup instructions use the phone notification flow to complete account authentication.
Secure Wi‑Fi
Connect the watch to secure Wi‑Fi before attempting playlist or podcast downloads. Wi‑Fi is required to transfer the content to the watch; the integration is not designed to fetch a live stream while you listen.
Bluetooth headphones
Pair Bluetooth headphones directly with the Garmin watch. Google identifies headphones as the listening route for downloaded YouTube Music content, so installing the app alone does not provide sound through the watch.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
How do you set up YouTube Music on a Garmin watch?
Follow this order to avoid an account or connection mismatch.
- Check compatibility. Open Garmin Connect IQ and confirm that your exact Garmin smartwatch supports the YouTube Music app.
- Install the app. Download YouTube Music from Garmin Connect IQ to the compatible watch.
- Pair the watch. Connect the watch to your phone through Garmin Connect. Confirm that notifications remain enabled while you sign in.
- Start sign-in. Follow the authentication prompt and choose the Google account that owns the YouTube Music Premium or YouTube Premium subscription.
- Connect Wi‑Fi. Join a secure Wi‑Fi network on the watch. A Bluetooth phone connection by itself does not replace the Wi‑Fi download step.
- Choose content. Select playlists or podcast episodes from your YouTube Music library and wait for the download to finish before leaving Wi‑Fi.
- Pair headphones. Connect Bluetooth headphones to the watch, start the downloaded content and test volume, skip, shuffle and repeat controls.
If a step does not appear, return to the preceding connection: confirm the watch is paired in Garmin Connect, notifications are enabled, the signed-in account has the subscription and the watch is on secure Wi‑Fi.
What can you listen to on the Garmin integration?
The integration covers downloaded YouTube Music library content, including playlists and podcast episodes. Garmin’s launch description also highlights personalized playlists and a catalog of more than 100 million songs. Those figures describe the service offering announced on June 12, 2024; they are not a promise that every song, playlist or podcast is available in every country.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Playlists
Download a playlist while the watch is connected to secure Wi‑Fi. Once the transfer completes, you can browse the library on the watch and play the saved tracks without a direct stream.
Podcasts
Google’s Garmin help explicitly includes podcast episodes in the downloadable content. Treat episodes the same way as playlists: select them while online, wait for the download, then use the watch and paired headphones for offline listening.
Playback controls
The watch supports everyday controls for downloaded material: changing volume, skipping, shuffling and repeating. These controls manage the copy stored on the watch; they do not turn the Garmin app into a streaming client.

Why does the free YouTube Music tier not work on Garmin?
Google says YouTube Music can be used without a paid membership in its ad-supported form. Google also identifies paid Premium features such as music downloads, background play for music, ad-free music and audio-only playback. Those general benefits explain what Premium adds across Google’s services, but the Garmin integration has an additional platform rule: Garmin requires one of the two named paid subscriptions for its Connect IQ app.

The app installs but sign-in does not complete
Check that the watch is paired through Garmin Connect and that phone notifications are enabled during the sign-in flow. Then confirm that the Google account selected in the prompt is the one carrying the paid subscription, rather than another account saved on the phone.
Downloads do not start
Verify that the watch is connected to secure Wi‑Fi. A phone pairing alone is insufficient for downloading playlists or podcast episodes, and the service does not provide a streaming fallback on Garmin watches.
Content downloads but there is no sound
Pair Bluetooth headphones with the watch itself and select them as the audio device. Google’s instructions specifically direct users to connect Bluetooth headphones to the Garmin watch for listening.
The watch is not listed as compatible
Use the compatibility information in Garmin Connect IQ for the exact model. Garmin’s announcement does not establish that every Garmin smartwatch supports the app, so an unlisted model should not be treated as compatible based only on its ability to play other music.

- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.

Should you choose YouTube Music Premium or YouTube Premium?
Choose based on where you want the subscription to apply, because both options satisfy Garmin’s stated requirement.
Choose YouTube Music Premium when music is the main need
This is the narrower paid option identified for the Garmin integration. It provides the Premium music benefits Google lists, while the watch behavior remains downloads over Wi‑Fi and offline playback through Bluetooth headphones.
Choose YouTube Premium when you also want broader YouTube benefits
YouTube Premium also qualifies for the Garmin app and includes the YouTube Music Premium access named by Garmin. Whether its additional YouTube features justify the price depends on your use of the wider YouTube service and the plan terms shown in your region.

Do not choose on the assumption that Garmin will stream
Neither subscription changes the watch’s playback architecture. Both grant the entitlement needed for the app, but you still download content before listening and use paired Bluetooth headphones.
What should you verify before paying?
- Confirm that your exact Garmin watch appears as compatible in Garmin Connect IQ.
- Check the current price and plan terms for your billing country; Garmin’s announcement does not publish one universal price.
- Make sure the Google account you plan to use owns the subscription.
- Confirm that you can connect the watch to secure Wi‑Fi for downloads.
- Have Bluetooth headphones that can pair directly with the watch.
- Decide whether you need only the music-focused subscription or the broader YouTube Premium membership.
- Remember that playlists and podcast episodes must be downloaded before offline listening.
What is still uncertain about availability?
Official Garmin and Google material establishes the Premium requirement, download-only operation and the setup components above. It does not provide a complete, permanent model-by-model compatibility table or a single worldwide subscription price. Regional YouTube terms and the current Connect IQ listing are therefore the authoritative checks for your watch, account and location.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a different Google account on the watch than the one on my phone?
You can have multiple Google accounts on a phone, but the account selected during Garmin sign-in must be the one that owns the qualifying subscription. If the watch authenticates another account, its entitlement may not be recognized.
Does the Garmin app support podcast downloads as well as music?
Yes. Google’s Garmin instructions include podcast episodes among the content you can download for offline listening. You still need secure Wi‑Fi for the transfer and Bluetooth headphones paired to the watch for playback.
Recommended Free Tools
Where can I check whether my exact Garmin model is supported?
Use the compatibility information shown for the YouTube Music app in Garmin Connect IQ. Because Garmin has not published one universal model list in its launch announcement, check the listing for your specific watch before subscribing or buying hardware.
Can I listen immediately after installing the app?
Installation alone is not enough. The watch must complete account sign-in, connect to secure Wi‑Fi and download the playlist or podcast episode first; then pair Bluetooth headphones to hear it.
