Valheim supports cross-play on Nintendo Switch 2, but it does not support cross-saves with PC or other platforms. You can join friends playing elsewhere, but your Switch 2 character and world do not share progression with your other platform saves. Iron Gate’s only stated save-access exception is Xbox saves accessed on PC through the Microsoft Store version.

Iron Gate says cross-play is available between all platforms, and its June 2026 announcement names Switch 2 among the platforms with full cross-play. Its 1.0 FAQ says there is no cross-platform save sync beyond the Xbox-to-PC exception described below.

Can Switch 2 play Valheim with PC, Xbox, or PlayStation?
Yes. Players on Switch 2 can play Valheim with friends on other supported platforms. Iron Gate’s release announcement says the game’s September 9, 2026 release added PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2 alongside PC, Linux, Mac, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S, with full cross-play. Nintendo’s US listing also identifies the Switch 2 edition as supporting cross-platform play and online co-op.
How to join a friend using a join code
Iron Gate’s general cross-play FAQ describes joining with a code. The instructions are general rather than Switch 2-specific, so menu wording or platform behavior may differ.

- The host opens the pause menu and copies the Join code.
- The other player chooses Join Game, selects Add server, and pastes the code.
Can you transfer a Valheim save to Switch 2?
No cross-platform save-transfer or sync path for Switch 2 is documented by Iron Gate. Its FAQ says Xbox players can access their saves from a PC only if they launch Valheim through the Microsoft Store. Iron Gate adds that beyond this exception, there is no cross-platform sync for save files; it does not list Switch 2 as an exception.
That means a save on PC, PlayStation, or Xbox does not become the same continuing save on Switch 2. Cross-play lets different platforms share a session; it does not carry a character or world’s progression between platform versions.

Is Nintendo cloud backup the same as cross-save?
No. Cloud backup and cross-platform save sync are separate features. Nintendo UK’s Valheim listing says the game does not support Nintendo Switch Online Save Data Cloud backup. That is a limitation on backing up Switch save data through Nintendo’s cloud service, not a method for transferring progression to PC or another console.

Valheim’s Switch 2 edition released on September 9, 2026, according to Iron Gate and Nintendo. Nintendo’s US listing describes it as a digital edition, lists online play for 1–10 players, and gives a 4.4 GB file size. Nintendo UK also lists a 4.4 GB download size and says online modes require a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership. Those store details are regional listings and may change; the membership requirement here is specifically what Nintendo UK states.

The Switch 2 port is not an original Nintendo Switch release. Iron Gate’s February 2026 Switch 2 announcement describes features including mouse mode, touchscreen menu support, advanced vibrations, and gyroscope aiming; a later developer update says the release is only for Switch 2.
