Not automatically. AI assistance can raise the judged creativity and quality of an individual piece while making a group of AI-assisted pieces more alike. In some tasks, especially tightly constrained ideation, people also produce fewer and less varied ideas after seeing an AI example. The answer therefore depends on what you call originality, when AI enters the process, what task people perform, and whether you are evaluating one work or the diversity of many works. Current studies support a conditional conclusion: AI can help an individual creator, but unexamined reliance can narrow the range of ideas across creators.

What does “originality” mean when discussing AI-assisted work?

Arguments about AI and originality often mix several different outcomes. A work may seem novel to an evaluator, yet many works made with similar assistance may share the same themes or structure. A creator may also generate fewer alternatives during ideation even if the final draft is polished. Keeping these units separate prevents a result from one experiment being stretched into a claim about all creative work.

Originality of one finished work

This is usually measured through ratings of novelty, creativity, quality, or enjoyment. It asks whether a particular story, image, design, or essay is an effective and unusual response to its brief.

Diversity across a collection

Collective diversity asks how much new material appears when many people respond to the same prompt. Semantic similarity, the number of distinct ideas, and the contribution of each additional work are relevant measures. A collection can become more uniform even while its average member receives a higher creativity score.

Originality during the process

Ideation studies examine the number and variety of concepts people generate before they settle on a final piece. Seeing an AI suggestion can anchor attention on that example, reducing exploration of alternatives in some settings.

Perceived originality or creator authenticity

Audiences may judge a creator differently depending on whether AI appeared early or late in the workflow. That is a perception about the maker and process, not proof that the artifact contains fewer original ideas.

What happened when writers used AI ideas for short stories?

A 2024 experiment gave online writers access to AI-generated story ideas and compared their work with stories written without that access. Participants could request up to five ideas. Evaluators rated AI-assisted stories as more creative, better written, and more enjoyable, with the strongest gains among writers who scored lower on a baseline creativity measure. At the same time, the AI-assisted stories were more similar to one another than the human-only stories.

AI access in the experiment Reported change in evaluated story novelty How to interpret it
One AI-generated idea 5.4% increase versus no AI access Novelty rating for an individual short story in this controlled online-writer scenario
Up to five AI-generated ideas 8.1% increase versus no AI access Novelty rating, not a measure of diversity across all stories

The authors, Anil R. Doshi and Oliver P. Hauser, summarized the trade-off as: “These results point to an increase in individual creativity at the risk of losing collective novelty.” Read the full study in Science Advances (12 July 2024).

This was a bounded test of short fiction by typical online participants. It did not test professional novelists, unusually creative specialists, long-form projects, or every kind of generative tool. Its result supports a precise claim about the measured task, not a universal ranking of AI and human creativity.

Why can an individual work improve while a group becomes less diverse?

AI suggestions can supply structure, prompts, or combinations that help a creator move past a blank page. If a writer has difficulty starting, that assistance may raise the quality of the resulting story. When many people receive suggestions produced from similar patterns, however, their choices can converge on related premises, wording, or narrative arcs. The two effects operate at different levels: one concerns the score of each item, the other concerns the distance between items.

This is not a contradiction in the data. Imagine ten stories that are all competently written and novel enough to earn high ratings, yet use overlapping settings and plot devices. Average quality can rise while the set contains fewer distinct directions. Any claim that AI “makes work less original” should state which of those measurements it means.

Did AI image support reduce variety in visual ideation?

In a 2024 visual-ideation study of 60 participants, people using an AI image generator became more fixated on an initial example. Compared with the baseline condition, they produced fewer ideas, with lower variety and lower originality under that task’s scoring method. The result shows that an AI reference can shape the search space before a person has explored alternatives.

Fixation is a process effect, not a verdict on every final image made with AI. The experiment used a particular visual prompt, interface, and comparison condition; changing the brief or introducing AI later could produce a different outcome. The paper is available through the CHI 2024 proceedings.

What does the admissions-essay evidence add?

A 2025 study examined 2,200 college-admissions essays across three preregistered studies. It reported that each additional human-written essay contributed more new ideas than each additional GPT-4 essay. The difference remained when researchers changed prompts and model parameters. This is evidence of homogenization in admissions writing, where many people answer comparable prompts; it is not evidence that every literary or visual field will show the same pattern.

The unit of analysis matters here. The finding concerns the marginal contribution of another essay to a collection, rather than a judge’s score for one essay. A single AI-assisted submission could be clear and distinctive while the full set contains fewer unique ideas. See the study in Computers in Human Behavior: Artificial Humans.

What does the latest synthesis say about homogenization?

A 2026 systematic review and meta-analysis combined 19 studies and 61 effect sizes. It found a small but statistically significant overall homogenization effect in human–AI co-creation. The effect was stronger in semantically constrained ideation—tasks with a narrow topic or expected meaning—than in minimally constrained divergent-thinking tasks, which allow a wider range of directions.

A pooled effect is an average across different methods and populations. It should be read as evidence that convergence is a recurring tendency under some conditions, not as proof that every AI use lowers creativity. Differences in prompts, interfaces, timing, participant experience, and outcome measures can change the result. The review is published at Behaviour & Information Technology.

Does the timing of AI assistance change perceived creativity?

Yes. In three preregistered experiments with 940 participants, a 2026 proceedings report found that evaluators perceived creators as less creative when AI entered early rather than later in the process. Elaborating substantially on an AI suggestion reduced that penalty. The result concerns observers’ judgments of the creator, so it should not be confused with a direct measurement of idea novelty.

Timing can alter both the search process and the story an audience tells about authorship. Starting with your own concepts and using AI for targeted expansion may signal more agency than presenting an unmodified machine suggestion. The report is available from the 2026 Academy of Management Proceedings.

How should you compare studies that reach different conclusions?

Use the following questions before treating two results as inconsistent:

Comparison axis Question to ask Why it changes the conclusion
Unit of analysis Is the result about one person’s output or the diversity of a collection? Individual quality and collective novelty can move in opposite directions.
Task Was it short fiction, visual ideation, admissions essays, or another format? Constraints, conventions, and revision cycles differ by medium.
AI role and timing Did AI provide an initial idea, show a visual example, or edit a nearly finished draft? Early input can anchor exploration; later input may be narrower in scope.
Outcome measure Were researchers rating creativity, counting ideas, measuring semantic similarity, or recording perceived authenticity? Each measure answers a different question about originality.
Population and setting Were participants typical online users or professional creators, in a lab or in daily work? Experience, incentives, and time pressure affect how assistance is used.

When is AI assistance most likely to support an original result?

No study establishes a universal “safe” mode, but the evidence suggests practical conditions that preserve more human choice. Treat these as workflow decisions rather than guaranteed effects.

Use AI after you have generated independent directions

Write several premises, thumbnails, or arguments before requesting suggestions. This creates a personal reference set, making it easier to reject a convenient but derivative first idea.

Ask for contrast, not a single answer

Request alternatives that differ in audience, tone, structure, or assumptions. Then combine, discard, and transform them yourself instead of selecting the first plausible output.

Keep the brief open during early exploration

Highly specific prompts can funnel everyone toward the same semantic neighborhood. During divergence, vary the constraints deliberately; narrow them only when you move into execution.

Use AI for critique and transformation

Later-stage tasks—finding gaps, testing a counterargument, checking continuity, or proposing edits—leave the central premise in the creator’s hands. Substantial elaboration also matters for how audiences perceive creativity.

Record rejected directions

Saving discarded concepts makes convergence visible. If every project repeatedly returns to the same motifs, change the starting references or work without AI for the next ideation round.

How can a team protect diversity when many people use AI?

  1. Set independent first drafts. Require each contributor to submit a short concept, outline, or sketch before shared AI brainstorming.
  2. Assign different creative lenses. Give team members distinct audiences, genres, visual languages, or constraints so the model is not the only source of variation.
  3. Compare the portfolio, not just the best item. Review recurring phrases, premises, compositions, and assumptions across all outputs.
  4. Run a human-only checkpoint. At a defined stage, ask contributors to explain what they would keep if the AI material disappeared.
  5. Credit the intervention. Note whether AI supplied an initial concept, generated alternatives, or performed editing; this clarifies how much of the search it shaped.

How can you evaluate whether your own work became less original?

Use a simple before-and-after audit rather than relying on a vague feeling.

  • Count independent concepts: How many materially different directions existed before you saw AI output?
  • Check distance between versions: Compare premises, structure, imagery, and language, not only surface wording.
  • Seek blind outside ratings: Ask reviewers to judge novelty without telling them which passages used AI, then separately ask about perceived authorship.
  • Inspect the collection: If your work is part of a campaign, class, anthology, or product line, look for repeated ideas across submissions.
  • Trace the turning point: Mark where AI entered and whether later changes added your own experiences, references, or arguments.

These checks do not produce a universal originality score. They help you distinguish a stronger single artifact from a narrower idea search or a more homogeneous portfolio.

What are the main limits of the current evidence?

  • The short-story experiment involved online writers and a bounded fiction task, not professional creators across media.
  • The visual study had 60 participants and tested one form of image ideation.
  • The essay analysis covered college-admissions writing, a setting with shared prompts and strong conventions.
  • The 2026 meta-analysis pooled heterogeneous studies; its small average effect cannot establish that every use of AI reduces creativity.
  • Evaluator ratings, semantic similarity, idea counts, and perceived authenticity are related but non-identical outcomes.

Accordingly, “AI makes creative work less original” is too broad as a standalone conclusion. A defensible statement specifies the task, the stage of assistance, the population, and whether originality means individual novelty or diversity across outputs.

What is the most accurate answer to the title question?

Using AI does not automatically make a creative work less original. It can improve the judged novelty and quality of an individual result, particularly for less confident creators, while increasing similarity across a set of works. Early exposure can also narrow ideation or make a creator appear less authentic to evaluators, especially when the person does little beyond the initial suggestion. Preserve independent exploration, vary constraints, and evaluate both the finished piece and the diversity of the surrounding portfolio.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a work be original if AI helped generate the idea?

Originality is not determined by a single tool handoff. Examine how much the creator transformed, combined, or elaborated the suggestion and whether the final work contains a distinctive point of view; those are different questions from whether an AI system appeared in the process.

Should I disclose AI assistance in a creative project?

Disclosure rules depend on the publisher, school, client, or competition involved. Even when disclosure is not mandated, keeping an internal record of where AI supplied ideas or edits makes authorship decisions easier to explain and audit.

Does writing my own prompt prevent homogenized results?

A personal prompt can add distinctive constraints, but it does not by itself guarantee diverse output. If many people request similar things from similar systems, compare the underlying concepts and revise substantially rather than accepting the first response.

Are professional artists and writers affected in the same way as study participants?

The cited experiments do not establish that. The short-fiction work used typical online writers, the visual study had 60 participants, and the essay research focused on admissions writing, so professional practice and longer projects remain context-dependent.
