No. A fresh Ubuntu 26.04 LTS Desktop installation does not include a built-in AI assistant or other built-in AI tooling. Ubuntu is an operating system that can run AI software, so you can add an assistant through App Center, run a local language model from the terminal, or use a cloud-backed application.
The most private options are local inference tools such as the documented Gemma4 snap and Ollama. They run the model on your computer rather than requiring a conversational cloud service, although downloading the software and model normally requires an internet connection. Ubuntu’s planned desktop AI work is aimed at accessibility features such as local, privacy-first voice-to-speech dictation; those plans are not part of a fresh 26.04 installation.
Does Ubuntu 26.04 LTS come with an AI assistant?
It does not. The Ubuntu Wiki states: “As of Ubuntu 26.04 LTS, a fresh installation of Ubuntu Desktop contains no built-in AI tooling.” That means you will not find a first-party chat panel, system-wide chatbot, local language model, or voice assistant waiting after installation.

Ubuntu Desktop documentation describes the system as supporting a variety of AI tools and workflows. In practice, Ubuntu supplies the operating-system environment, package management, drivers, permissions, and desktop applications; you choose and install the assistant or model separately.

There is also no published Ubuntu statistic for AI-assistant adoption, performance, or usage that would justify claims about how many Ubuntu users run one. The practical question is therefore which type of assistant fits your privacy, hardware, and usability requirements.
What AI-related features are planned for Ubuntu Desktop?
Ubuntu’s stated desktop direction is accessibility rather than a general-purpose chatbot bundled into the operating system. Planned work includes voice-to-speech dictation, local large language models, and a privacy-first design.
These are future plans, not a promise that a particular assistant, model, interface, or release date will appear. Until an Ubuntu release actually ships the feature, treat Ubuntu as an AI-capable platform rather than an operating system with a built-in assistant.

For a desktop experience, use App Center to find an AI application and install it like any other Ubuntu program. The exact assistant, model access, account requirements, and data handling depend on the application you select.
- Open App Center from the Ubuntu application grid or dock.
- Enter the assistant’s name or a search term such as
AIin the search box. - Select the application and read its description, publisher, permissions, supported architecture, and any account or network requirements.
- Click Install. Ubuntu may ask for your user password before changing installed software.
- Launch the application from the application grid. Complete any sign-in or model-selection steps shown by that application.
Ubuntu documents both snaps and Debian packages as application formats. App Center can present either format, but the installation screen should identify what you are installing. A graphical application is usually the easiest route if you want chat history, settings panels, or a model selector instead of terminal commands.
Do not assume that an application listed in App Center is an Ubuntu-built assistant. Check the publisher and permissions, and read whether prompts are sent to a remote service. A graphical interface can still be cloud-backed even though it runs on your Ubuntu desktop.
How do you run a local AI model with the Gemma4 snap?
Ubuntu’s AI guide documents an inference snap called gemma4. This workflow installs the model runtime locally and starts an interactive chat from a terminal.
- Open Terminal from the application grid, or press
Ctrl+Alt+Tif that shortcut is enabled. - Install the snap:
sudo snap install gemma4
- Start the chat session:
gemma4 chat
The guide presents inference snaps as locally installed models that can be optimized for the machine on which they run. Because the model is local, this route does not inherently require a cloud account or a recurring AI subscription for inference. Your computer still needs enough storage, memory, and processing capacity for the model, and the first installation normally needs network access to download the snap and its model files.

The command is an example of the documented workflow, not a guarantee that every future model revision will use the same snap name or command. If the package is unavailable or the command changes, consult the current Ubuntu AI documentation and the snap’s own information before trying alternatives.
How do you run a local model with Ollama?
Ollama provides another terminal-oriented route. Ubuntu’s guide shows Ollama installed as a snap and then used to run the qwen3:0.6b model.
- Install Ollama:
sudo snap install ollama
- Start the example model:
ollama run qwen3:0.6b
The 0.6b tag identifies the example model variant in the guide. Model names and tags can change, so check the current Ollama package and model documentation if that exact tag is no longer available. A smaller model designation generally implies a lighter workload than a much larger model, but actual speed, memory use, and answer quality depend on your CPU, GPU, available RAM, storage, quantization, and other running applications.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe guide describes Ollama as able to run open models locally or use Ollama cloud models. These are different data paths: local execution keeps inference on your machine, while a cloud model sends requests to the provider’s service. Select the mode deliberately and review the provider’s current retention and privacy terms before sending confidential text.
Which Ubuntu AI option should you choose?
There is no single best assistant for every Ubuntu user. Choose the route that matches whether you value a polished interface, local control, broad model choice, or the least setup work.
| Option | Interface | Where inference happens | Setup | Best fit | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| App Center application | Graphical desktop app | Varies by application; may be local or cloud-backed | Search, review, and click Install | Users who want menus, chat history, and minimal terminal work | Publisher, permissions, account needs, and data handling differ by app |
| Gemma4 snap | Terminal chat | Local machine | sudo snap install gemma4, then gemma4 chat |
Users who want a documented local-model example | Model resource needs vary; the command is an example and may change |
| Ollama with a local model | Terminal commands and Ollama clients | Local machine, with optional cloud models | sudo snap install ollama, then run a model tag |
Users who want to try multiple open models | Model tags and availability change; cloud mode has different privacy implications |
For a nontechnical household computer, start with an App Center application and inspect its data policy. For experimentation, scripting, or a machine that must keep prompts offline, a local inference tool is more appropriate. If your computer struggles with a model, changing to a smaller or more heavily compressed model can help, but the model’s documentation should be your authority for supported hardware and settings.
Can a local Ubuntu assistant work offline?
After the software and model are installed, local inference can run without a cloud service or subscription. That is the main privacy advantage of Gemma4-style local inference and Ollama’s local-model mode: prompts and generated responses can remain on the computer during a chat session.
“Offline” does not mean that no internet connection is ever needed. You generally need network access to download the snap, obtain model files, receive updates, or install an optional graphical client. Some applications may also contact remote services for updates, telemetry, authentication, or cloud features, so verify the application’s settings instead of assuming that every desktop icon is fully disconnected.

Local processing also shifts responsibility to you. Protect the Ubuntu account that can read the model files, keep the system updated, and avoid placing sensitive prompts into a cloud mode accidentally. A local model can still produce incorrect, biased, or unsafe output; privacy and correctness are separate questions.
What hardware does Ubuntu need for local AI?
There is no universal minimum hardware specification published for Ubuntu’s AI workflows. Requirements vary with the model, model format, context length, quantization, operating-system load, and whether computation uses the CPU, an integrated GPU, or a discrete GPU.
Use this checklist before downloading a large model:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Confirm that your Ubuntu release and processor architecture are supported by the snap or application.
- Check free storage for both the runtime and the model files; model downloads can be substantially larger than the application itself.
- Check available RAM and, if applicable, GPU memory against the model publisher’s current guidance.
- Close memory-heavy applications during the first test so you can distinguish model demand from unrelated load.
- Start with a smaller model when you are evaluating an older laptop or a system with limited memory.
Do not treat the example qwen3:0.6b tag as a benchmark or a guaranteed performance target. Ubuntu’s official material does not publish a universal speed result for it, and performance on one computer does not predict performance on another.
What should you do when installation or model startup fails?
Snap installation reports a permission or authentication error
Run the command from an account allowed to use sudo, enter the password for that Ubuntu account when prompted, and check the exact error text. Do not paste a password into the terminal command itself. If your device is managed by an organization, an administrator may have restricted snap installation.
The package or model tag cannot be found
Names and tags are maintained by the package or model provider and can change. Recheck the current Ubuntu AI guide, the snap listing, or the Ollama model catalog rather than repeatedly typing an obsolete tag. Do not substitute a similarly named download from an unknown publisher.
The model installs but responds very slowly
Confirm that the model finished downloading, check available RAM and storage, and close other demanding applications. Try a smaller model or a documented lower-resource variant. Slow output is normally a capacity or configuration issue, not evidence that Ubuntu has a built-in assistant.
The desktop app asks for an account
That usually indicates a cloud-backed feature or a provider-specific service, not an Ubuntu login requirement. Read the app’s privacy and network disclosures, then decide whether its account and data terms fit your use case; a local Gemma4 or Ollama workflow is the alternative when you want inference on your own machine.

Is Ubuntu’s AI support the same as a built-in assistant?
No. “Ubuntu supports AI” means the operating system can host tools, runtimes, libraries, and applications used for AI and machine learning. It does not mean Canonical ships a conversational assistant in the default desktop image.
That distinction matters when planning deployments. A fresh installation has no assistant to configure, no default model consuming disk space, and no system-wide prompt service. You select the application or model, install it, and accept responsibility for its updates, permissions, privacy settings, and output quality.
What should you expect from Ubuntu’s future desktop AI work?
The publicly described direction emphasizes accessibility, including voice-to-speech dictation powered by local models and designed with privacy in mind. If shipped, such a feature could help users who prefer voice input or need an alternative to keyboard interaction.
It is not yet a current 26.04 Desktop feature, and the available description does not establish a final interface, supported languages, hardware requirements, model, or release date. Evaluate the installed release in front of you rather than planning around an announced concept.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need an internet connection to install an AI assistant on Ubuntu?
Usually, yes, for downloading an App Center package, snap, updates, or model files. Once a local model is fully installed, its inference can run without contacting a cloud service, but individual applications may still have update, sign-in, or telemetry connections.
Are Gemma4 and Ollama official Ubuntu products?
Ubuntu’s AI documentation provides the Gemma4 and Ollama snap commands as examples, but that does not make every model or project an Ubuntu-built assistant. Check the publisher shown by snap or App Center and read the project’s own terms before deploying it.
Can I use a cloud assistant from an Ubuntu laptop?
Yes, a browser-based service or desktop application can run on Ubuntu if that service supports your browser or Linux package. Its prompts are processed under the provider’s cloud policy, so cloud use is a separate privacy choice from running a model locally.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Will Ubuntu 26.04 receive a built-in voice assistant later?
Ubuntu has described future accessibility work involving voice-to-speech dictation and local models, but no particular shipping date or final feature set is established. Treat it as planned work rather than a capability included in the current fresh installation.
