Yes. Steam Frame is designed to stream a Steam library from a PC over a wireless connection. Connecting the PC to the router by Ethernet is Valve’s recommended way to improve a Remote Play setup, but Valve’s published material does not state that a wired PC connection is required for Steam Frame.

How Steam Frame connects to a PC

Valve describes Steam Frame as a standalone VR headset designed primarily for low-latency streaming of a player’s Steam library from a PC. It also supports standalone experiences in both VR and non-VR. That means wireless PC streaming is part of its intended use, rather than an arrangement that requires an Ethernet cable running to the headset. Valve’s Steamworks Steam Frame documentation describes the headset’s streaming and standalone roles.

Valve lists Wi-Fi 7 (2×2) and dual radios for concurrent 5 GHz Wi-Fi and 6 GHz VR streaming. It also lists an included Wi-Fi 6E wireless adapter for a direct, low-latency PC link. These are Valve product specifications; they are not independent measurements or guarantees of performance in a particular home. Valve’s Steam Frame product information provides the specifications.

What should be wired?

The practical arrangement is to connect the PC host to the router by Ethernet when convenient, while the headset uses its wireless connection. Valve’s general Steam Link and Remote Play guidance says a wired network provides the best result and recommends Ethernet when the streaming client supports it. That is general network advice, not a Steam Frame-specific compatibility rule. Valve’s Steam Link / Remote Play support guidance does not make Ethernet mandatory for Steam Frame.

If your PC already connects to the router over Wi-Fi, the cited Valve material does not establish that Steam Frame will refuse to work. It also does not promise that every wireless PC-and-headset setup will perform well: results depend on the local network and its conditions.

How to improve a wireless setup

  • Use Ethernet for the PC if practical. This follows Valve’s general Remote Play recommendation and leaves the headset wireless.
  • Prefer 5 GHz over 2.4 GHz where possible. Valve’s Steam Link guidance recommends 5 GHz because 2.4 GHz is more congested.
  • Reduce competing wireless traffic. Valve warns that simultaneous wireless activity can interfere with streaming.
  • Consider the included direct wireless adapter. Valve lists it as an option for a direct, low-latency PC link; the published specification does not provide independent performance results.

Do you need to buy an Ethernet cable?

Only consider one if your PC currently uses Wi-Fi and you can conveniently connect it to the router. Ethernet is Valve’s general recommendation for the host side of Remote Play, not a stated Steam Frame requirement. Valve does not specify a required cable category, so there is no basis here for saying that Cat 6—or any new cable—is necessary for every owner.
