Google’s Motion assist is designed to help passengers use a phone in a moving vehicle by displaying small bubbles that move with the vehicle. Google explicitly announced it for car rides; its general passenger guidance covers moving vehicles but does not establish separate results for buses or trains. It may help, but it is not guaranteed to prevent motion sickness.
How Motion assist is intended to help
Motion assist places subtle bubbles near the edges of the screen. They move in real time using the phone’s motion sensors, providing visual cues intended to track turns, acceleration, and braking. Google says this may help align what a passenger sees with what their body feels, making it more comfortable to read, browse, or watch on a phone.
That description explains the feature’s design, not a clinical finding that it works for everyone.
What to expect in cars, buses, and trains
Cars
Google’s September 1, 2026 Android Drop announcement specifically presents Motion assist for passengers riding in cars. Its Android Help instructions also describe using the feature as a passenger in a moving vehicle.

Buses and trains
Google’s general moving-vehicle guidance does not name buses or trains or report separate results for either mode. It is reasonable to try the feature as a passenger, but the available Google information does not show that it was independently validated for buses and trains or that it will provide the same benefit in each.
Automatic detection
Google warns that a phone may not always detect that it is in a moving vehicle. It does not publish bus- or train-specific detection reliability, so automatic activation should not be assumed on any particular ride.

Requirements and how to turn it on
Google’s Android Help lists Android 17 or higher and updated Google Play Services as requirements.
- Open Motion assist settings: Go to Settings, tap your profile, then All services > Personal & device safety > Motion assist. You can also search Settings for “Motion assist.”
- Enable automatic activation if you want it: Turn on Start in a moving vehicle. Motion assist starts when the phone detects vehicle motion. A silent notification appears when automatic activation begins; tap it to turn Motion assist off for that session.
- Add a manual fallback: Add the Motion assist tile to Quick Settings, either from the Motion assist settings page or through Quick Settings’ edit menu. Use the tile if automatic detection does not start the feature.
You can adjust the bubbles’ opacity, color theme, and shape. A randomization option periodically changes their color and shape; Google does not say that any particular appearance setting works better.

Google describes Motion assist as an aid, not a cure or guaranteed prevention. Its Android feature page says results vary, it may not work for all users, and a small percentage may experience worsened symptoms. Google does not provide an effectiveness percentage, a clinical trial result, or a comparison across cars, buses, and trains. Stop using it if you feel discomfort.

Motion assist is for passengers. Google says not to use it while operating a moving vehicle or in another situation that requires full attention to safety.
