Yes. You can use Microsoft Visio on a Mac in a web browser, but Microsoft does not offer a Visio desktop app for macOS. The browser version can open, create, and edit diagrams without installing Visio on your Mac; the available features depend on your Microsoft plan and the file you need to work with. Microsoft’s Use Visio on a Mac page describes the browser workflow.
Can you use Visio on a Mac?
Yes. Open Visio for the web in Safari or Chrome on your Mac; Microsoft says there is nothing to install. The browser app lets you view, create, and edit Visio diagrams when your account and the diagram support the work you need. Microsoft does not provide a native Visio desktop application for macOS.

Microsoft’s general browser guidance also lists current versions of Edge, Firefox, Chrome, and Safari 10 or later. For Mac-specific instructions, Microsoft names Safari and Chrome, so use those for the documented Mac workflow rather than assuming that all browsers and versions behave identically. See Microsoft’s Mac guidance and Visio for the web FAQ.
Can you view or edit Visio files in a browser without buying Visio?
Viewing and editing have different access requirements. Microsoft says basic Visio files can be opened read-only without an editing license. To use that route, sign in to a Microsoft 365 account, upload the file to OneDrive, and open it there. Creating or editing diagrams requires an appropriate license.

Do not assume that any Microsoft 365 subscription includes Visio editing. Microsoft says the web app is included with Visio Plan 1 and Plan 2 and is available at no additional cost with eligible Microsoft 365 commercial and education plans. Microsoft 365 Home and Personal do not include that Visio web app entitlement. Check the specific account and plan before relying on editing access. Details are in Microsoft’s Visio for the web FAQ.
Which Visio option fits your work?
| Option | What it provides | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Read-only browser access | View basic files in the web app after signing in and opening the file from OneDrive; no editing license is required. | Checking or sharing a diagram without changing it. |
| Visio in Microsoft 365 | Web app access for eligible commercial and education subscriptions; not included with Microsoft 365 Home or Personal. | Browser-based work when your organization’s subscription is eligible and the diagram’s features are supported. |
| Visio Plan 1 | Visio for the web; it does not include the Windows desktop app. | Creating and editing supported diagrams in a browser. |
| Visio Plan 2 | Visio for the web and a Windows desktop app. The desktop app is for Windows, not macOS. | People who need web access plus desktop capabilities on a Windows computer. |
Features and diagram types vary across Visio in Microsoft 365, Plan 1, and Plan 2. Compare the types of diagrams, stencils, collaboration, and editing features you need—not just the plan name—using Microsoft’s Visio plan comparison.

Check both the file format and its contents. Visio in Microsoft 365 supports Visio Drawing (.vsdx), but not the legacy .vsd format, including .vsd files that have been converted. Other plans may support some legacy or compatible content, but unsupported elements can still restrict browser editing. Microsoft documents the format and feature limitations in its web FAQ and Visio for the web limitations.
Quick Recap
- For a .vsd file: do not expect Visio in Microsoft 365 to edit it in the browser. Check whether another eligible plan or a Windows desktop workflow supports the file.
- For a .vsdx file: the extension alone does not guarantee that every feature or element will be editable online.
- For specialized diagrams: verify that the diagram type and required stencils are available in your plan. Some advanced diagram types are desktop-only.
- For data-linked diagrams: Microsoft says linking data is available through the desktop app; linked diagrams can be viewed in the web app.
What to check before choosing the browser version
- Identify whether you only need to view the diagram or need to create and edit it.
- Check the Microsoft account’s exact plan and confirm it includes the web editing access you need.
- Check whether the file is .vsdx or .vsd, then confirm that its diagram type, elements, and features are supported by the web app.
- Use Safari or Chrome on Mac for Microsoft’s documented Mac browser workflow, and test the actual file before relying on browser editing for important work.
