Google Home requires a compatible Matter hub on your home network to add and manage Matter devices. An existing Google speaker, Nest display, Nest Wifi Pro, or Google TV Streamer (4K) may already provide that hub. If your Matter devices use Thread, the hub must also be a Thread border router.
What Google Home requires
Google’s Matter setup checklist includes a Google Account, home Wi‑Fi, IPv6 enabled on the router, a compatible Matter device, a compatible phone or tablet, and a Matter-enabled Google Home hub. The requirement is for hub functionality—not necessarily for buying another box.
Google describes the hub as the device that connects Google Home to Matter accessories. Commands generally operate locally over Wi‑Fi or Thread. When you are away, the request goes through Google’s cloud to the hub, which then communicates with the device at home.
When an existing Google device is enough
Google currently lists these devices as Matter hubs for Wi‑Fi-based Matter devices:

Do not infer Thread support from a product’s name alone. Google marks the exact model and generation, and its compatibility list can change.
Thread devices need a Thread border router
Matter is an application standard; Wi‑Fi and Thread are network transports. A Matter accessory using Wi‑Fi can use a listed Wi‑Fi Matter hub. A Matter accessory using Thread needs a hub that also functions as a Thread border router.
Google lists these models for Matter over both Wi‑Fi and Thread:

- Google Home Speaker (2026)
- Nest Hub (2nd generation)
- Nest Hub Max
- Nest Wifi Pro (Wi‑Fi 6E)
- Google TV Streamer (4K)
The Google Home Speaker (2026) specification identifies Wi‑Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.4, and a Thread 1.3 border router. Other speakers and the first-generation Nest Hub are listed as Wi‑Fi-only for Matter, so they are not a substitute for a Thread border router.
Check IPv6 before buying hardware
Google says IPv6 must be enabled on the home wireless network for Matter to work properly. Without it, setup may appear to succeed and then fail during control or other operations. Confirm IPv6 support and activation in the router’s network settings before replacing a hub or accessory.
Choose the right setup path
Matter over Wi‑Fi only
Use any compatible Google Home Matter hub listed for Wi‑Fi. A separate Thread border router is not indicated for an accessory that communicates only over Wi‑Fi.

Matter over Thread
Use one of Google’s Wi‑Fi-and-Thread models. If your existing speaker or display is Wi‑Fi-only, you need a compatible Thread border router, often supplied by another supported Google device.
A mix of Wi‑Fi and Thread devices
Select a hub that supports both transports so the same Google Home installation can manage both types. Verify every device’s Matter transport and the hub’s exact model.

Google’s Seamless Setup route is different from Matter. For supported products, Google says no separate bridge, hub, or maker app is required. The documented flow still requires a Google smart speaker or display or a Nest Wifi point, plus an end device that supports Seamless Setup. Google cites the Kasa Smart Wi‑Fi Plug Mini HS105 and examples from Cync among supported products.
Other Works with Google Home products
“Works with Google Home” does not mean “Matter.” Non-Matter products may use a manufacturer cloud service, bridge, or another setup method. Follow the maker’s Google Home instructions instead of assuming that a Matter hub is required.
Do not confuse a Matter hub with router bridge mode
A Google Home Matter hub manages smart-home connectivity and control. Router bridge mode is a network configuration used in certain Nest Wifi and Google Wifi arrangements, commonly to address double NAT. Google limits which arrangements support bridge mode and warns that enabling it can disable features. Bridge mode neither defines nor replaces a Matter hub.

- Identify each accessory’s protocol: Matter over Wi‑Fi, Matter over Thread, Seamless Setup, or another Works with Google Home method.
- Check the exact model and generation of every Google speaker, display, router, or streamer already installed.
- Compare that model with Google’s current Matter hub list, including the separate Wi‑Fi and Wi‑Fi-and-Thread designations.
- Confirm IPv6 is enabled on the home router and that the phone or tablet meets Google’s setup requirements.
- Check whether Google Home currently supports the accessory category; Matter category support can arrive at different times across platforms.
- Only then consider additional hardware. Choose a device whose main purpose—such as a display, router, speaker, or TV streamer—you also want.
If you genuinely need another hub, Google currently lists the Google TV Streamer (4K) among devices supporting Matter over both Wi‑Fi and Thread. That is a conditional option, not a requirement for every Google Home household.

What the requirement means in practice
Google’s Matter preparation documentation says Matter devices can use the home’s existing network and reports more than 80,000 compatible Works with Google Home devices. That figure is Google’s stated total for compatible Works with Google Home products, not an independent count of Matter devices. Device availability and supported categories vary by model and market, so check Google’s current list before purchasing.
