Yes. Gaming software can lower or destabilize FPS when overlays, recording, chat apps, browsers, launchers, or other background processes use resources the game needs. The size of the effect depends on your game and PC, so there is no reliable universal percentage. To check, compare repeated runs of the same scene with one utility or feature enabled and disabled, while keeping the game, settings, and system conditions as consistent as possible.
How can gaming software affect FPS?
Software can affect performance even when it is not the game itself. An overlay may use GPU time to draw its interface and CPU or memory resources to collect and show statistics. Recording and streaming add capture or encoding work. Chat clients, browsers, launchers, RGB utilities, and optimization tools can also use CPU, RAM, or VRAM while their windows are hidden.
The impact depends on the bottleneck in your particular setup. A game limited by CPU resources may respond differently from one that is limited by GPU capacity or memory. An application that makes little difference in one game could matter more in another, or on a PC with less spare capacity. Microsoft Flight Simulator Support warns that overlays and background applications can negatively affect performance, and NVIDIA recommends disabling third-party tools when diagnosing poor performance. Neither provides a universal FPS-loss figure for gaming software.
“FPS” means frames per second, or how many frames are displayed in a second. A utility can reduce the average rate, cause occasional drops, or make frame delivery less consistent. It may also affect responsiveness. These outcomes are related, but one number does not describe them all.

Do overlays reduce FPS?
They can, but an overlay is not automatically the cause of a slowdown. Its effect depends on what it draws, what data it collects, how often it updates, and how much headroom the PC has while the game is running.
It is useful to separate the overlay from the rest of the application. A client may run in the background with its overlay turned off; a recording feature or instant replay may add work even if no overlay is visible. Test one feature at a time rather than assuming the whole application is responsible. If the game is smooth with the application running but not recording, for example, that points to a different cause than a slowdown that follows the overlay setting.
What should you measure besides average FPS?
Average FPS measures overall throughput, but it can hide short hitches. For smoothness, also compare minimum or percentile FPS and frame-time behavior; for responsiveness, check latency when a suitable tool exposes it.

| Metric | What it tells you | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Average FPS | Overall frame throughput during the run. | Compare it across runs made with the same scene and settings. |
| Minimum or percentile FPS | How performance behaves during weaker parts of the run. A low result can reveal inconsistency that the average conceals. | Use the same minimum or percentile measure for both conditions; do not compare unlike statistics. |
| Frame time | How long frames take to render. Irregular or unusually long frame times can correspond to visible stutter. | Look for repeatable spikes in the same part of a run. Steam describes maximum frame time as useful for identifying brief hitches. |
| Latency | How quickly an input is reflected in the displayed result, as measured by a tool that supports latency reporting. | Compare it alongside FPS; a high displayed rate does not by itself establish low latency. |
| CPU, GPU, memory, temperature, and power readings | System context that can help show what changed between runs or where a constraint may be. | Record whichever values your chosen monitor provides, and compare like with like. |
If a game uses frame generation, displayed FPS may include generated frames rather than only frames rendered by the game. Steam’s performance monitor separates generated frames from actual game frames, which helps avoid treating those figures as interchangeable.
How do you test whether software is causing an FPS drop?
Use a controlled A/B test: establish a baseline, change one software setting, then repeat the same workload. A single run is not enough to distinguish a real effect from normal variation.
- Stabilize the starting point. Update the game and graphics driver, then reboot so both conditions start from a comparable state. Keep the game version, driver, resolution, graphics settings, power mode, and other relevant settings unchanged during the comparison.
- Choose a repeatable workload. Use the game’s built-in benchmark if it has one. Otherwise, follow the same route for the same duration in the same demanding area. Avoid comparing unrelated gameplay scenes.
- Capture a baseline. With the utility in its normal state, record average FPS and the low-end or frame-time metric available. If possible, also note CPU and GPU utilization, RAM and VRAM use, temperatures, and latency. Record which tool and statistic you used so the next run can be compared fairly.
- Change one thing. Disable one overlay or utility, or turn off one feature such as recording or instant replay. Leave other applications and game settings alone. If you change several things at once, you will not know which change mattered.
- Repeat the run at least three times. Keep the same route and duration. Compare the middle result or a consistent median rather than selecting the best run. A change is more convincing when it appears repeatedly and in the same portion of the workload.
- Test the feature, not just the application. Re-enable the software and switch individual functions on or off in separate comparisons. This can distinguish an overlay effect from recording, replay capture, or another feature.
For a useful result, keep the PC’s operating conditions as similar as you can: avoid changing power mode or game settings between runs, and do not compare a cool starting run with a later run after the system has heated up. If background activity or a game update changes between conditions, repeat the test before drawing a conclusion. NVIDIA support recommends current patches and drivers when diagnosing optimization problems.

Which tools can check FPS and stutter?
The best choice depends on whether you want a quick on-screen check or a more detailed record. Steam is convenient for a basic comparison; the NVIDIA and AMD overlays suit users with the respective driver software; NVIDIA FrameView offers broader logging and benchmark metrics.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →| Tool | What it can show | Logging and use |
|---|---|---|
| Steam Performance Monitor | FPS, CPU, GPU, and system RAM; minimum FPS and frame-time information for investigating micro-stutter; generated and actual game frames are distinguished. | Enable it at Steam Settings > In Game. A practical option for a quick in-game check. |
| NVIDIA App overlay | In-game performance and latency statistics; the statistics overlay can show frame rate, clocks, and GPU temperature. | Alt+R toggles the statistics overlay by default. Convenient when NVIDIA’s software is installed. |
| AMD Radeon Overlay | FPS, CPU and GPU utilization, clocks, temperatures, VRAM, and system RAM. | Supports configurable sampling from 1 to 10 seconds and CSV logging. Convenient when AMD’s driver software is installed. |
| NVIDIA FrameView | Average and percentile FPS, frame time, PC latency, utilization, clocks, temperatures, and power. | Designed for benchmarking and logging, with report generation and an emphasis on minimal overhead. |
Use one monitoring tool consistently during the A/B comparison. Running extra monitoring utilities while testing can itself change the background workload, so avoid adding tools you do not need. The tools do not report identical metric sets: if you switch tools between runs, you may lose a like-for-like comparison.
How do you interpret the results?
Start with repeatability, not the biggest number. If the enabled condition repeatedly has lower average FPS, weaker low-percentile performance, or frame-time spikes that do not appear when the feature is off, the software is a plausible contributor in that workload. A difference that appears in just one run, or shifts unpredictably between runs, is weaker evidence.

Then identify what changed. Lower average FPS suggests reduced throughput. Similar averages but worse low-percentile FPS or larger frame-time spikes suggest less consistent delivery. Higher latency is a separate concern: responsiveness can worsen even when a displayed FPS figure looks high, particularly when frame generation is involved. Report the metric you observed rather than describing every difference as simply “lower FPS.”
Utilization readings provide context, not a verdict on their own. Compare them across the same scene and conditions, alongside frame-time and FPS results. If the game performs similarly with a utility on and off, the test does not show a meaningful effect under those conditions; it does not establish that the utility has no effect in other games, settings, or workloads.

What should you do if turning software off improves performance?
Use the test to isolate the smallest change that addresses the problem. You may not need to close or uninstall an entire application if disabling one feature is enough.

When diagnosing poor performance, Microsoft Flight Simulator Support advises closing unnecessary applications and disabling overlays. NVIDIA likewise recommends disabling third-party tools as part of troubleshooting. These are diagnostic steps, not proof that every overlay or background app causes a measurable loss on every PC.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can gaming software make a game stutter without lowering average FPS?
Yes. Short frame-time spikes can make motion feel uneven even when the average remains similar. Check frame-time or low-percentile results, rather than relying on the average alone.
Does a high FPS counter mean the game has low input lag?
No. FPS describes frame throughput, while latency concerns responsiveness. Use a latency-capable measurement and interpret it separately from displayed FPS, especially when generated frames are involved.

Not necessarily. Closing unnecessary applications is a reasonable troubleshooting step, but a controlled comparison can show whether a particular app matters on your system. Keep essential security and system functions running.
Can I compare an FPS test from one game with another?
Not as a direct measure of the software’s effect. Games place different demands on CPU, GPU, and memory, so compare enabled and disabled runs within the same game and workload.
